    I have had feedback from a person informing me that he was getting better results when drilling the pilot hole right the way through. This gave the forstner bit an easier run as the guide spur at the tip of the forstner doesn't actually cut. Thanks for that info!

      why is it that Australia's Carbatec do not suply the 2 20mm dogs in the UJK kit

    • @mlindholm
      @mlindholm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@southx8 Have you confirmed they don't, or is it simply not listed in the description? I've checked with 2 North America retailers, both of which don't _describe_ the dogs coming in the set, and they said the description was just straight from the distributor, but that yes, the two dogs are included, as they are required for the latter holes, once some have been drilled out. My understanding is the kit is complete, and you only REQUIRE a drill and your wood piece to complete it (but a vacuum is highly recommended, and clamps to hold the rulers down help with accuracy).
      Once drilled, you'll want more dogs to make good use of the layout pattern, or clamps as David demonstrated in the intro of the video. But I'm told the kit itself, as sold by all retailers, contains all parts and bits required to drill the hole system in an appropriate board, using your drill.

    I bought the Parf Guide System when they first came out from Axminster, before they were available at Lee Valley. I built an assembly table and can make a 30" cut between the Parf Dogs. This system, combined with other Festool systems, such as the Domino, have literally changed the way I do woodworking. My table saw is accurate, but not as accurate as this system due to the myriad reasons that table saws can require adjustments, which, though easy to resolve, are simply not necessary when making a 90 degree cut with the Parf Guide System. A real time saver, and deadly accurate. Fantastic for cabinetry, and equally great for the task of making other pieces. Thank you for the demonstration, Dave. Another great video!

    I did not build this exact table but I’m here to tell you, the Parf guide system is freakin awesome! I usually make the slightest error in measuring but this thing doesn’t let you. When done using it, everything is absolutely perfect. Really high quality parts. Trust me if you think you can’t, if this weekend warrior can, you can. I sound like a damn commercial. Hi Dave - Nice meeting you at Carbatec. I made some progress on your great benchtop (pilot holes drilled and board sanded and waxed), but then ran into a minor snag. The drill bit for the 20mm dog holes that came with my Parf Guide System is a 10mm straight shaft borer bit so it won't fit in my CXS drill since it is too large for the normal chuck and doesn't have the Centrotec fitting. I contacted Axminster and they said: "We have sent the correct drill bit to you as there is only one that is supplied with the Parf Guide System." It was also missing the stop collar, which I think they will send to me. Hopefully, I'll be able to finish the project when I return from a quick trip to the US. Cheers and thanks, Chris

      Maybe true. I have a piece of said peg board in my shop that has at least 1 hole that is off by a couple of mm! I haven't checked all the rest of the holes yet, but let's just say that the peg boards offer no guarantee of accuracy.
      That said, the peg board method can be a good one, and in fact it can be bored out with a 20mm forstner bit so as to be Festool compatible, while at the same time being laid out on an SAE grid. This is a tough decision to make nowadays, because much of the sheet goods are now being produced in metric thicknesses/SAE length & width. Metric is so much easier to deal with, so I wish we could get the nominal lumber in metric and then be done with the idiocy of base-16(8) SAE.

    Hi Dave. I have been thinking about a top with dog holes but could think of no way to drill them accurately. In fact I was going to ask the group for advice but you have answered the question!! Buying one between 2 or 3 like-minded woodworkers would seem like a good idea since it is not a tool one would use every day.

      How about renting? You could buy the kit, use it and then rent it out several times to pay for it. With the cost at around $250 it would seem a rental at $75 a few times would work. Any rentals after that would be profit.

    Just found a CNC made 30mm thick top 900mm x 600mm with 19mm holes, 3" apart, guaranteed square for $215 AUD. The Parf system including the MDF costs close to $300 and you still have to drill 2 lots of holes making it poor value in time, money and effort and while it does look fun to use, very customisable and a very cleverly deigned system this is one product I wont be buying and I have bought many products based on your videos. Where it might become better value is if you see yourself making more than one top, for example, a mobile bench or an assembly table as well as the main bench or you see yourself replacing it in a few years then fair enough but as a one off product I see better value alternatives
    Despite this, I still love your videos, Dave

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John. Thanks for the honest comment! There are a few things I would like to point out. 19mm holes will be fine to use 3/4" dogs but not 20mm dogs. 30 mm is way too deep for the lever clamps to make a turn through and so these will not be able to be used. Also, most dogs that have a threaded section in the base need an 8mm bolt to secure them from underneath. Your board is 12 mm thicker than mine and the bolts may not reach. The board is 900 x 600 which is not a large area. I found that 1200 x 600 works very well but at times I would like it to be a bit bigger. As you say, if you want to do a few then the parf guide system is value. The other thing I find is the joy in making it yourself. Please give me some feedback of how your new board works for you.

    • @WasimBarri
      @WasimBarri 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply Dave. A few points ... There are a good variety of good quality 3/4" dogs so not having 20mm holes isn't a problem. You can even make your own. Kreg has a base clamp, used with their hold down clamps, you can use on any thickness, only limited by the size of your bolt. Larger CNC tables are available for around $300. There are other companies that make dogs, hold downs, in line clamps etc etc that would suit 30mm tops with 3/4" holes. So 30mm isn't a restriction other than weight if you need it to be portable.
      Being able to have any size top with holes anywhere you choose is where the Parf system shines. I also take your point about making it yourself. It really does look like fun and being a retired Maths teacher using Pythagoras again would be a buzz for me. I can hear my old students saying "we'll never use this again" . I'd love to show them this system. I haven't completely decided on buying the pre drilled CNC top yet but it still seems like better value

      Dave I once said I hate you because your videos are so good and your enthusiasm so high that they suck me every time. I've bought Jessem stock table saw and router guides, mitreset etc etc etc based on your videos. I now hate you even more. I've just ordered the UJK parf guide and John's yellowbush starter pack dogs. While I did consider buying a ready made CNC top I realised that I want at least two tops including a small portable one, then this guide becomes better value. Also, with this system I can make some rectangular and L shaped dogs/stops perfect for pocket hole assembly which I do a lot of. So STOP MAKING GREAT VIDEOS!!! They're killing my bank balance.

    Great video Dave. One day I'll get round to this! A couple of things...maybe a link to a short video explaining how the 3-4-5 principle works for the uninitiated? Also maybe clamp 2 boards together and drill 2 at once instead of going through the process twice, then you've got a second bench top or one to keep in storage.
    I've watched a lot of Peter's excellent video's over the years. He's a nice guy and does a very professional job.

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I could do a Pythagoras video. Re doing 2 in one hit there is a snag. Any error of the drill leaning at all by the user would be amplified in the second board. I have used the top board as a template to create other units but like to keep the jig to create the "master". Thanks for watching Graham!

    • @GrahamOrm
      @GrahamOrm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. How about going through the first board with the fine drill and just marking the second board with the point? It would save a lot of set up time for the second board.
      The 3-4-5 is so easy but sounds complicated unless explained.

    Mr Stanton, I'm so envious of your tools. I only have 1 functioning arm/leg, and it greatly limits tools I can use. On being a drill press... until I discovered the Bosch Drill press on one of your videos, and researched it for a while, and decided to get one... except I didn't know they can't be used in America.
    So my drill press still stays on one speed 24/7 because changing the belt location with one hand is a nightmare.
    Leo with Hand-I-Craft has helped a lot with his solo armed adventures. But he gets tools from UK/EU. The tools for the America market are NOT friendly for disabled unless you are extremely wealthy. (Table saws are too dangerous to use, unless you can afford a few thousand on a SawStop.
    So if you, or anyone reading this know of a similar drill press to the Bosch, that can be used here in the USA, (and isn't an overpriced $1200 machine) I'd love to hear about it. (I am incapable of making a digital press setup due to my 🧠not grasping it in any way... vfd's etc.)
    I've tried all the "jig for drilling straight holes" (but to make them, you need to drill a straight hole. Lol ). And I tried "drill guides, but they're not an option either.
    (And because ppl might aak: The bosch advantages for my disability go beyond the digital aspect. It's the weight, the design of table/base, and the wheel handle. If curious, snd you have a regular drill press, try doing the things they need to use, with 1 hand. Then look at the Bosch.
    Plus... it's a Bosch !!! I love my other bosch tools but that drill press is next level, and only $400ish US dollars!!!)
    So thanks for the great videos. I'll keep trying at this woodworking thing... I got a ton of tools/clamps and nothing better to do. So I'll keep trying.)

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MrCarter'sRods! Great to hear from you and your own needs. I am not familiar with the drills available in the States as I am in Australia which is also 240 volt. But, you can always have an electrician create a 240 volt outlet for you in your home. Maybe that would help?

    • @carterscustomrods
      @carterscustomrods 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidStanton yeah, I'm considering that. It's probably a good idea to up my home amperage, so I can have him do that for a bit extra. I know NOTHING about electric. And too many concussions and illness have limited parts of my brain... but I still got my looks. Hahaa.
      Thanks for the reply. I watched so much last week that my wife said I was picking up your "accent" lol. (But I have been having a lot of movies from New Zealand playing in background for my dog lol.)
      So thanks again, and I'm really hoping to get drill press going. I'm making a lot of router jigs (your stream about T-track is my favorite).
      Stay safe.

    Hi Dave. Could not help notice a small optimisation for the next time you make a top. When drilling the 3mm pilot holes have a go at lifting the bushing and drill in unison and not removing the bit entirely from the bushing.. It seems a reasonable portion of the time around the 7 minute mark is just getting the bit back into the bushing with tight tolerances. Given I have never actually used one, this is the most unqualified advice you will receive today. Thanks for the content as always.

    Thanks for a terrific video!
    I am new to all things woodworking and on a huge learning curve, but I just bought a Festool track saw and am now excited to create an MFT style bench top as my first "real" project.
    I'm in the US and a little confused about the 20mm vs 3/4" diameter issue that you mention at the beginning of the video (from an accessory perspective mostly).
    Do dogs, stops, clamps, etc. typically come in the 3/4" diameter in the US rather than 20mm?
    It seems like 20mm is what I always see on the various product websites as I'm researching.
    I'm totally fine making 20mm holes on 96mm centers if the accessories I will purchase in the US are 20mm. Or, would that be problematic for me in the US?
    I just don't won't to wind up with an inconsistency after the fact and am unsure what I should be doing to ensure that I don’t.
    Should I be creating a tabletop with 3/4" dog holes on some measure of inches on center in the US?
    Hope someone can clarify for me. 🙂
    Thanks!

    I'm just an enthusiast who is amazed with woodworking skills and wonderful ideas and solutions presented by people like you. Thank you for sharing your tips with the rest of the world! I find them very useful, and I hope that some day soon I'll be able to get some of those wonderful tools, and do some small jobs for my home and myself. Have you considered using a combination of LR 32 system and a TSO GR 16 with the router for this task? I think it could be a winning combination for drilling 20 mm holes in an accurate 90 degree pattern. Best regards from Novi Sad, Serbia.

      Hi Borislav. Thanks for the compliments! I think your suggestion is a good idea and would be pretty accurate but not as accurate as this system. The other thing is the cost of this system is way less than the LR-32.

    I just clicked on the link a couple of years late. Says only available in USA not Australia. Went to Carbatec site not available for another month but the stores are closed in Melbourne any way due to Covid. Will Cost $399 plus shipping as well I guess. Be easier to order a ready made stanton bench kit off you. How much would shipping of a MDF table be to Melbourne would you think. Heaps I guess as would be very heavy.

    Hi Dave, Thanks for the video. I have had this set in the UK for the past year and find so so accurate. Even to the extent that I had to replace my bog-standard framing square with an Empire framing square as it was not accurate enough to test long cuts and to test the hole layout with the dogs. Anyhow, long story short, used properly, it will likely be more accurate than most of the layout tools you may already own.

    Thanks for the video, just found your channel, though I made my top a couple of days ago using this same system, I concur with the accuracy, the tolerances are so tight it's unbelievable, only difference I did to the way you did it was I'd bought a set of the long and short Parf dogs and used the long ones in the jig, that way I didn't need handles as the shaft of the long dog is plenty to hold on to.
    Keep up the good work, I am now duly subscribed to your channel

    Loved the video and have subscribed. Could you optimise the process? The way I see it you would only need to drill out enough 3mm pin holes to get a few 20mm dog holes. You could then reference everything off of those holes, as in effect that's what you are doing later on. Could save a bit of time?

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michael. Yes, it could be done quicker. I like to have all the holes drilled out at 20mm straight off because I use these tops as a clamping assembly table as well as a docking station. Stop drilling holes whenever you feel like it. You could make a few panels up for special purpose. Thanks for subing!

    Im hear in the usa and have been fighting the metric system with a lot of woodworking things. The 20mm dog holes and festool layout are where i caved. I made my paulk total station (when i was really really new at woodworking) and used the method he suggested. Then when I bought the festool sys clamping set like the one dave made the video for none of it fit snug or the dogs fell right through. That was a drag and a yuuuge eye opener. Now I have to build another PTS. I have another jig for the 20 mm holes but, it is imperial spacing. Soon I will have this jig as i have gotten obsessed with clamping holes in everything.

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan. Are you relying on sight to position things or is there some method of the lazer using a mechanical lock onto the festool track? Great that this is working for you. A lot of people may not own much more than a cordless drill so I guess it does come down to the tools you already have in some cases.

      My thoughts are that you could buy Peter's system and then use a 3/4 inch forstner bit but get someone with a lathe to turn the shaft of the bit down to fit into the guide block. Maybe Peter has a 3/4 inch bit in the wings as we speak. The other option is to use the 20mm bit and drill deeper as 3/4 inch is 19.05 mm...less than a mm slop.

    Well explained Dave and easy to follow. The vacuum attachment is a really good idea too and makes the job so much cleaner.
    I was about to purchase a Kreg Mobile Project Centre which is about the same price at Carbatec as the UJK Parf Guide System. Do you know if the Kreg tables use 20mm holes similar to the layout produced in your video, or do they use 3/4” holes as in the US? So I am wondering if the two are compatible. If not then which system should I choose? It is tempting to be able to make my own table top layouts as you demonstrated so well, but the Kreg Project Centre has a lot going for it too.

      David Stanton. Hi David. Thanks for your reply. I visited Carbatec on Wednesday last and found out that the Kreg Project Centre, as expected, uses 3/4” holes. I decided to get the UJK Parf guide system to make my own bench tops in the manner which you demonstrated. I’ve also got some of the TSO 20mm dogs and a couple of Kreg clamps and anchors to get me going. Is it worth incorporating T-Track on the bench surface and/or sides for alternative clamping methods, or will the surface holes provide all the clamping I’m likely to need?

    2.the jig is for professionals or for DIY ? because if it's for DIY how many tops would i need to make ?
    3.the pattern for the holes is 96mm ,why i cann't use 150mm ?
    4.I'm in the procees of making one my dimensions are 1215 x 915 with a paterrn of 150mm it's fine, or i have to go to 96mm ?

    • @DavidStanton
      @DavidStanton  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Filippos.
      The cost of the jig becomes more beneficial if you make a few perforated boards.
      96mm is the European convention and if you want to use things such as hardware designed around the 96 mm grid then your 150mm hole spacing will be way too large.

    You cut the video where you are checking your first square layout, so it probably did not go in perfectly the first time. The reason is quite simple: you are stacking fault tolerances and you are multiplying them. You stack because you use the triangulated side for the second triangulation, and you multiply as you use the short side as reference for the long side. For less error, just mirror the process along the long edge as the first long edge is the only set of holes that are perfectly straight as it's the origin. Also, shim the floating ruler up. You'd think it doesn't matter, but it might and doesn't hurt. Nice tool and explanation. :)

    • @peterfitzpatrick7032
      @peterfitzpatrick7032 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tips there Dave... a lot of people don't understand the concept of "stacking" errors...😎👍
      As a qualified machinist , I ALWAYS set a single reference point (0x, 0y) and ALL measurements are referenced back to this...
      Anyone who has tried stepping out marks with compass set will find no matter how accurate you set it, the minute error grows & grows as you go...
      try it folks & measure the result with an accurate steel 1 metre rule & ,say , 50m.m. steps... it's quite a shocking thing to see the error accumulation... 😱

    • @NFSU2Master

      Can you explain this a bit more in detail? Are you talking about 10:11 where he is using the short side? Should he have used the last hole from the first long edge instead?

    Dave, thanks for another handy video. I have a totally unrelated question. Currently designing a sideboard to fit into a cavity. The right hand cabinet door (inset) can't open much past 90 degrees and the client wants 2 drawers behind the cabinet door. I'm having trouble figuring out how to fit the drawers in as the cabinet door and hinges will limit clearance for runners and drawers. I was thinking of just making the drawers slightly narrower and having the drawer slides mounted in further from the edge of the cabinet to provide the clearance. How would you approach this? Thanks.

      Good idea and add a face frame that the drawers are within. That way it wont look off set to one side.

      Perfect. Thanks for the swift response!

    So disappointed right now but not in you Dave. I found your channel around Christmas 2017 and thought this bench idea was amazing and perfect to take around to mates when I do odd jobs as well as small jobs at home so ordered the UJK Parf Guide early Jan while I was on leave (along with the TSO triangle it was an expensive holiday for just being at home). Unfortunately it didn't arrive until I'd gone back to work and with some large projects on, it got a quick look over and was then put aside until I had time again. Fast forward to today and I had a days leave, perfect to break this out and get your bench done. Picked up some ply, came home and got everything out ready to go, opened up the UJK tube, pulled everything out and set it aside, marked the first hole position and then..... realised I'd only received one parf stick :( During my quick look over it before I hadn't removed them and there's a mark down the edge that makes it look like there's two in the plastic sleeve but there's only one. I've sent off an email to Axminster but given it's been 8 months since I bought it I'm not sure what they're going to say. The worst part is, I probably won't get the time again until Christmas this year.

      I am sure Axminster will look after you . It is a shame that it happened to someone with limited windows of available time.

      I received an email over night saying they're sending another one but it could take up to 52 days to be dispatched (guessing they need to wait for stock) and another couple of weeks in transit, not that it matters how long it takes. At least I'll have it by the time I have the time to make another attempt.

      Had a similar delay when I was so excited to build the tabletop. I’m near Toronto Canada.
      Bought the Parfguide system and after a month or so set aside a day to really get into it.
      Very excited about the precision of the whole setup.
      Very first 20mm hole - the 3mm tip snapped off my bit. Whaaaat? Been using Forster bits for years with nary a glitch.
      Oh well - popped over to LeeValley to replace it - they are so good with any issues - and Parf Guide system completely sold out with a 3 week waiting period for more kits from Axminster.
      My excitement drained out through my shoes! That was a long 3 weeks - but worth the wait in the end.

      Sorry to hear that Paul. I guess with so many being manufactured they are bound to have a few glitches.

    Dave I forgot to ask about using 3/4" dogs in the 20mm holes as 3/4" (19mm) dogs are much easier to get, have more variety and much cheaper than 20mm parf dogs . The Kreg dogs and corresponding hold downs and in line clamps use 3/4" dogs and are substantially cheaper than parf dogs. Would the 3/4" dogs work OK with 20mm holes or would there be too much slop? Have you tried it?

      Too much slop John but yellowboxshed makes a sleeve to rectify it. www.yellowboxshed.com.au/product/bench-dog-adapter-3-4-to-20mm/
