some ppl have been commenting that dark academia is an aesthetic based off of europe and therefore should be european in nature. some people have also commented that “light academia” or “grey academia” is more inclusive than “dark academia.” rather than responding to multiple comments with the same opinion, here’s my reply.
to the first point: my main issue with eurocentrism is that it pins certain european cultures as being more elite, more aesthetic, more intellectual, etc, and it doesn’t offer enough space for other cultures - even within europe - who also have a wealth of knowledge and art and culture to offer. the hyper-focus on greek/roman, french, british, and italian culture leaves out other cultures. where are the posts about polish, hungarian, estonian, and finnish culture? those are all european cultures, but they’re not highlighted as often. for an aesthetic that prides itself on the love of learning and academia, it would be incredibly remiss to not include the famous thinkers, artists, and writers from other cultures. (and not just from europe lmao)
also, not everyone in europe is pale, thin, and wealthy. europe is a diverse place, and people of color live in europe as well. inclusivity - whether it be body shape, ethnicity, sexuality, socioeconomic background, etc - should be welcomed. if you’re denying the advancement of inclusivity and diversity within the aesthetic, ask yourself why that does not fit with your sense of aesthetic. that’ll probably give you a more telling answer.
finally, i personally think that any academic aesthetic, whether that be dark or light or grey or the original studyblr, has a lot of fundamental issues underlying the aesthetic such as classism, lack of inclusivity, lack of discussion around mental health, etc. a lot of this stems back to the way our education systems and our society is formed and how we treat other people, and it’s an institutional problem that reflects back on the aesthetic as a whole. that doesn’t mean i condemn the different aesthetics. instead, i bring these points up in an effort to combat that and to make positive, inclusive changes within our community.
i truly appreciate and love the discussion going on in the comments right now, and i hope that together, we can move forward in a positive manner. sending much love 💕

I'm italian and I've always noticed this. Here's my italian point of view.
People really think that Italy is "culturally aesthetic" and "intellectual", but really, Italy is a mess! The culture is great but it has NOTHING to do with dark academia. Italy has the worst scholastic system ever, an extremely low quality of education, and I'm pretty sure dark academia doesn't apply to Italy at all. I've always thought about it as a more British thing (which isn't even in the european union now lol).
So what I mean is that people have an idealized image of Italy and italian education for some reason. Probably for its past but people think it's like this now as well.
Those famous italians writers or artists are mostly self-taught and are just really talented people. Schools and colleges have nothing to do with it (unless they met the, extremely rare, actually good teacher/professor.)
I don't know much about dark academia, but it just feels british or or american to me. Italy is the opposite.

I agree with every single point you make, and I'm so grateful you bring this all up. I hope that people take inspiration from your video and instead of doubling down and justifying the problems with dark academia, they try to help it grow. There will always be people halting progress and I think, unfortunately, many of the themes of dark academia encourage elitism and classism.
I don't think who I am should validate my point, but I'd like to include that as a person who checks off many "minority" tickboxes, as well as a latina living in Europe, I've always believed in fighting for, and making space for my people in the places where we don't have space. I understand not everyone has the energy to do so, and there are so many battles to fight that this may not be "a hill" that someone "chooses to die on", but I hope people support your message. I don't have the energy to take on any of the academia aesthetics, (personally a fan of fairy and romantic academia) but I hope my taking part, and creating safe spaces and content as a minority will organically help in its own way.
Thank you as always for your videos, and for having the integrity to take on these harsh truths about the study community! 💖

I kinda disagree. Dark Academia doesn't exclude Finnish, Arabic authors etc. But the aesthetic is around the "elitist" (but not necessarily wealthy), British old school look and Classics (which means ancient Greek and Roman). Because in England, "sophisticated" humanities are traditionally ancient Greek and Roman. Also in Europe in general, ancient greek and roman, as well as the local classics are what is taught in school. That's where the aesthetic comes from. The culture around it turned into "eager to learn" and so on. Which means eager to learn about ANY literature. It doesn´t exclude other literature works. People just take the tradtional route when they make boards for instagram and tumblr.
Also, the dark academia style looks like what we like to picture scholars of European literature. As interesting and important as arabic and chinese literature is, an old, "tradionally clothed" and sophisticated Chinese or Arabic person barely wears tweet and cord. That literature however is still what dark academia enthusiasts learn (and should learn) about.
excuse my english, it´s not my native language.

@@tatacherry7268 Hi ! I wanted to share something to you because this was me a year back . I was so much into study tube and study gram almost 2 years back. I would search for videos of studying 12 hrs a day. I had been that A * student all my life so I always placed my worth on my grades . It slowly started affecting my mental health so much and I keep on telling myself that I was just lacking discipline which is definitely told a lot in study community and motivational speakers on social media.I fell for it . I would only take 5 min breaks which included pee and water break . I developed Generalized Anxiety Disorder and my life started getting worse. Thankfully and it really took a lot of time for me to get help and it did get better after getting professional help. The thing was that I still hadn't learnt that all these study videos and studying all time was the reason behind it along with other factors. I even passed my high school with A* grade so I thought it was helping but again I started putting study before my health because I would see studytubers studying so many hours even though they were sick . I was preparing for a competitive exam a year back and the environment is just so toxic and competitive here. Teachers will tell you how if you sleep for more than 7 hrs you'll never get into uni. You would be shamed because another student doesn't get out of house because he's busy studying, doesn't go on family function, doesn't even see sunlight, never go out with friends but you do. So, now you don't deserve a place and you're an idiot. I didn't get into uni and I took gap year but damn I still listened to them . I stopped living and being happy because that's what makes you an eligible student for the exam . If I studied for less than 7 hrs any day , I would stress about it for a week and couldn't study . Then I fell into depression and caught covid , everything got worse. I lost months because I wasn't okay but I still hated myself because I was not studying. The worse that could happen happened and now I'm healing. Even though my exams are very soon and few friends keep on talking how I am not studying enough. I just remind myself to be proud because i'm breathing and alive , I already won today . If something asks me to give up my health and life , I am never going to do that again

@@samisjournal2725 this is like my story and oh my goodness, I hope you really take care of yourself! This quarantine I've been more self caring and even more social. I think quarantine was a chance for me to improve my mental health and focus on me for a bit, so I started focusing on myself a bit more by socializing more ( I never knew that talking to people even texting them was fun! )and making different deserts and even knitting. So I urge you to take this time to focus more on yourself, not to much to make yourself tired but enough to make you happy and feel more alive. Grades don't define you but the way you respond to situation in life kinda does. So try and put a few minutes or a hour even into doing some fun things, maybe journalling, writing your thoughts down, dancing, reading, going outside or taking a fresh breathe of air. Yes, you should study but take a few hours for yourself too, don't be like me, I lost my childhood because of studying and I regret it, I've been through so much pressure that it broke me and although I do have anxiety like you do, I'm not afraid to enjoy life anymore. I suggest to take longer breaks and also have fun studying, try and make it fun for yourself, don't isolate yourself in a room everyday, try and study at the library maybe or even a quiet place in a garden. Eat healthy and make the most of life, try to enjoy every happy moment, even if you know there are sad or bad moments in life. You're life is yours to spend wisely, it's not your parents, it's not your grades and it surely isn't your teachers either! You are strong and powerful, I believe that you can find the things that make you happy and healthy! Your such an amazing person for going through everything that has happened to you, you're strong! Please please don't judge yourself, you're not perfect because you are not meant to be perfect, everyone has mistakes but it's important for us to learn from them. I believe in you🥺💜, I wish I could've said these to my past self but since I can't go back, I tell this to my present self and now I wanna say it to you cause I know you're going through really tough time, so please take care, ok? 💕

They never consider how other people are doing or whats going on with them. I’m someone who doesnt have many supplies at home because at home we have to save up money to get a house in our budget. It annoys the sh*t out of me when people who get everything they want think that everyone can do everything. People have health issues that prevent them from stuff. Ex: I have asthma so its difficult for me to do sports. Its freaking hard to do everything. I love writing pretty notes cuz I find it nice but the fact that people think its bad to not always be not productive gives me press that i shouldnt have. the study community makes a huge point about how breaks are essential yet they are the same people spewing toxic advice that damages people’s views of their productivity and negatively affects their mental health. your worth isn’t determined by how many hours a day you study or how many dollars you spend on stationery! everybody is different and have different study methods that suit them. someone having neat notes doesn’t guarantee they’re better than you or smarter and this mindset is what prevents people from truly reaching their potential as they are obstructed by a constant cloud of doubt and worry that they aren’t doing enough. burning yourselves out is never healthy, and the rise in study tubers likely correlated with the prominence of this. you should be doing a max of 5-6 hours of studying weekly, maybe more if you’re in college, but you shouldn’t overdo it! remember to just do what suits your unique skills and that your mental health needs to be good for your studying to be good. i believe in you

@Hulda's Journey • tw // mentions of suicide
there are a lot of problems surrounding it. you would see plenty of headlines of students committing suicide because the education system under capitalism is just bad. considering there are a lot of factors aside from that which contribute to the worsening of mental health (ofc, mental health is not a one-sized fits all). i bear no ill-intent with your opinion but we should not judge people who have a different approach about the "meaning" of life. how i define a "successful" life may be different to yours and to others. capitalism just feeds you the idea that you should be like this, like that, etc. (forcing you into a box which is just according to their standards) without actually caring for your well-being. it's okay to just exist. it's okay to just live a simple life. however, due to how capitalism controls the corrupted system of our world, it is much more difficult to do so. i hope this helps. discussions like this should be widespread because it is time to question how systems work. the pandemic just worsened it all lol

That! I have an iPad but it's because I'm a graphic design student and I need to be able to draw on the go because my commute is so long. I don't understand why you'd get a new device when the one you have already fits your needs perfectly. Especially when those people got an iPad partially for environmental reasons. Purchasing a new iPad each year when there's nothing wrong with you're current one is not environmentally friendly or sustainable.
Most of the justifications for getting a single iPad in the first place aren't really reasonable when you think about it either. If it's about saving paper and not having to carry lots of books to class you can always just take notes on your laptop by typing. Yes handwriting is better for memory but is the memory gap between the two so big that you need to write notes on an iPad? The gap can also be closed by better studying techniques and habits. At the very least if you go the iPad route you definitely don't need an iPad Pro for note-taking. All current iPad models work with an Apple Pencil.
If you need a new device for school or university and don't have a laptop or computer that works well or meets your needs there are windows laptops that work with styluses and work as 2 in 1s and those will do a hell of a lot more than an iPad plus you won't need to by a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to use with them.

the 24/7 productivity thing has been incredibly damaging to me. i’m chronically ill and struggle a lot with simple tasks, even getting up to get food or a drink drains me. being productive looks different for everyone. the height of productivity for me is being able to take a shower and still be able to function for the rest of the day.
i’m typically very late on turning in my assignments because i often don’t have the energy or cognitive function to do them. i maybe get 4 or so days a month where i have the energy to sit down and get caught up on work.
we don’t all have the same 24 hours and a productive day for me might seem extremely unproductive to others. shaming people for not being able to achieve what you see as productive is extremely classist and ableist and can damage the mental health of others and make them feel guilty for not being able to be the stereotypical studyblr definition of productivity.

Yes! A lot of tips for studying is to focus on one thing, don’t listen to music and be as minimalistic as possible, which is completely useless when the only way I can focus on anything is by overstimulating because of the amount of thoughts and anxiety. It’s sad because I feel bad sometimes for not studying for few hours straight or for not having motivation but it’s not my fault I can think only about how much I hate myself and want to hide in bed for weeks sometimes. 😔

the “being-most-productive” mindset is so damaging tbh. i, myself, got into this studyblr community at the age of 11-12 and got SO influenced by all these tips and quotes about being productive and SO blinded by all this beautiful stationary, that i’ve centred my whole life around that certain “aesthetic” and felt like a total piece of sh*t whenever i couldn’t be “productive” enough. sadly, i realised how toxic this mindset was only years later, when i have already burnt out. i think influencers on the internet should be more careful with what they say and propose, since not many of them actually realise how much power they hold over others (especially children).

This related to the schools and ivy leagues:
My Father went to a community college and then college. He turned out very well. He has a very well paying job and was in the military and earned a respectable spot there. He is even currently getting is masters degree. He was not a good student until high school and was still very successful in life.
So I definitely agree with what you said in that section in the video.

I used to be too absorbed with all this productivity bs. Until burnout hit me. It took me almost 4 months to get out of the slump (unfortunately I'm in medschool and that means increasing workloads). After that, I started to take it slow and prioritise my physical and mental health. Guess what? I'm doing 100× better in my academic (I got A+s in my last 2 exams). Just move at your own pace and take a good care of yourself. It is perfectly fine to just be lazy sometimes :))

The whole studyblr is such a lie. I graduated from law school with the most horrendous notes ever, a mechanical pencil, a pen, and that's it. I didn't even have a pc/laptop at the time. I had to use my psvita to investigate some topics. Srly if you have the time to studying (as little as it might be because life is a b) you can with an old notebook, a pencil and the material. I had classmates that studied while playing halo, the one who loses had to read articles of the law we were seeing, and thy graduated too. Studying must be something so personalised as your own daily routine. If you want to buy stickers gd washitapes anf pens, do it, but don't say it's for studying, that's an excuse.

thank you for saying that horrendous notes are ok, I'm still in highschool and I remember being overwhelmed by my new classmates on my first day because their notes are so organized and clear and their notes have variations on colors (highlighters for example) for what purpose they have, meanwhile I have the most basic notes ever with scribbles and asterisks for additional info on whatever space I could find so it's kind of like a where's waldo when reviewing my notes.

absolutely! when I was growing up, I was taught to write as neat and as legible as possible. Writing print was a no-no, we were only allowed to write in cursive. When I reached University, that all changed. We had tests before class, during, and after. When I had to study, I had to cram a lot of things, that I didn't care how my handwriting looked like - just as long as I understood and memorized what I needed to study. I even used to buy highlighters and glitter pens, but I only used those to decorate my desk.

girl YES. can i like pull you out of my screen and give you a humongous hug?!? this is the first video I've seen that discusses the issues with the study community SO WELL!!!
i completely agree with literally everything that you said and I'm not gonna say why because there are enough comments on that. one thing I would've added that's kinda linked with 24/7 productivity and consumerism is the idea of ''ideal studying/note taking''. There are so many tiktoks that have someone take out their mildliners and muji and whatever other crap people think will make your notes cuter. then they doodle around a HUGE title and literally color in their notes as if it were a coloring book. those videos are often directed to college or high school students. is it just me when i say this: NO ONE in the real world in that grade level would have the time to do all of that bullcrap. i understand the point of trying to make your notes look -aesthetic-, but cute and aesthetic notes have taken over the study community SO MUCH that they're starting to be seen as the ''ideal notes''. we have all clearly lost touch of what notes are there for. not to brag to your friends about, but to actually maybe study from them? so many people, including me when i fell into this craze a few months ago, spend so much time making their notes that they don't even get to study from them!
this happened to me a few months ago, and i basically got Cs in my exams. now, PRACTIBILITY is a priority for me, and if i don't have the time to make my notes pretty, i don't. another thing that people probs misinterpret as having bad notes is when someone doesn't ask you to send them their notes. your notes are for YOU, only you. you don't need to change your notes so that they're nice and readable for everyone else, just YOU, which is why it bothers me so much that people often say that their note-taking method works for everyone. it really doesn't. everyone needs time and energy to find their own method. for example, i did just that, and now i get As or B+. i am not a study expert obviously, this is just how i personally view the aims of the study community.
I am honestly afraid that studying will become an actual ''trend'', and all people will do is take cute notes and show them of to tiktok or their friends, to the point where they're so sick of writing so much that they will start neglecting studying, just because they cant make their notes cute enough.
to the very small percentage of ppl that started reading my comment and made it here:
DON'T LET OTHER PEOPLE INFLUENCE YOU NEGATIVELY. You don't need the prettiest notes, you don't need to be at your study desk 24/7, and you don't need to feel good about your productivity all the time. You need to adjust to you. Only you. Let everyone else do them, but you do you

@@Pikadumpling I defintely agree with your debt part and honestly being debt-free is so important. I'm glad you realized that you don't need to have nice notes, all that matters is that you have a way to study that works for you. But I wouldn't necessarily say blaming everything on capitalism is good. If we were socialist, most people would be poor and people with innovative minds would not be able to get their rewards. Socialism is wrong, but I definteley agree that student debts should be lowered. People should be paying a reasonable amount of taxes and there should be ways for poor people to become rich and for mc people to become rich as well. The truth is, socialism sounds good but it has never worked. Look at Europe, the economies are failing, people can barely afford things, and things are in shambles. There needs to be adjustments to our capitalist system, but becoming socialist is not the answer. Capitalism is the system that works best throughout history, as long as wrongs are corrected and there is some concession for people who need it.

While I'm not necessarily a member of the study community I do consume quite a lot of study content. The part relating to educational elitism really hit home for me! I'm a junior in college now and when I was applying to colleges I watched a ton of videos of how to get into college and felt really pressured to get in a top name school. When the time came I ended up getting into my dream school NYU, and all I could think about was the way this uni was portrayed online and low key fantasizing about it. At the end of the day I got into my dream school, but I couldn't afford it. I ended up going to UCSC (which is still a great school) because it was way cheaper as a cali native. Looking back NO ONE in the community was talking about finances or the importance of taking the price into account when going to college. I felt ashamed tbh because I did the work to get in like everyone was saying, but couldn't go. If anyone is applying to college keep that in mind!!!

I’ve been involved in studyblr for about 5-6 years now, and I have a chronic illness. Recently, my health has gone downhill. I have two benign brain tumors, and a condition called gastroparesis, all caused by a mitochondrial disorder. My health decline has caused my grades to absolutely tank, and I got rejected from my dream university because of this. I have never in my life resonated more with a video... the community makes me feel so inferior for not having the ability to utilize my time productively, for not testing well because of my illness etc. everyone in the community loves to talk about breaks, and that GPA/SAT doesn’t matter, but actions speak louder than words... not only is the community everything that was said in the video, it’s ableist as well because of the lack of recognition for physically ill and disabled students who don’t always have the privilege of being able to be productive.

I thought books like The Secret History and We Were Villians were a satire of elitism and the glorification of the unhealthy habits promoted by this environment but once it got turned into an aesthetic, all of that nuance was lost and esp on younger teens (who shouldn't be reading this) who are impressionable and haven't been taught to analyse as heavily yet. Because of this I think DA is dangerous out of the context of a genre!!

I got myself an iPad for university at the end of my first year (I'm in my third year now), and the whole notion of "iPads give you good grades" is a LIE.
Having an iPad is great in many ways - it's more convenient to use, there's the delight factor that comes with using nice things, and all that, but having an iPad doesn't automatically mean that you'll get good grades. I got myself an iPad, and I still did worse than ever (which I don't want to think too much about) at uni.
Unless you have a clear idea of how you are going to use your iPad as a study companion, you won't get good grades. Having the iPad means nothing, anyone with the money and resources can get the iPad + Pencil they want, but what you do with your iPad & how you integrate it into your study strategy will determine how your grades will be. I learnt this the hard way, and now I've set up a study plan in such a way so that I can use it more effectively, and get the marks I seek.
You may not actually need an iPad to study. But if you do (or if you want one), think long and hard about your decision (I'd say sleep on it for some days) before making the investment. This goes for not just the iPad, but pretty much any expensive tech, really. :)

thank you so much for making this video seo!! i especially enjoyed the part about consumerism. in videos like "study with me"'s where the people are using the newest macbook and an ipad to study, i've seen a bunch of comments under it saying stuff like "omg i wish i could afford that stuff, i absolutely need them to study". it makes me really sad to see these types of comments, especially when it's obvious that the person making the video is well off and a lot of their viewers aren't. not that there's anything wrong at all with the person using a macbook and ipad to study! my point is that these videos normalize the idea that you must buy expensive stuff to study, which is harmful to impressionable viewers who are low-income, and i wish that more people acknowledged the considerable amount of privilege that plays a role here. i come from a low-income household myself, and i used to feed into all the consumerism in the study community, which is primarily perpetuated by people who aren't low-income. i've since learned that having expensive materials, or buying a lot of stationery, is definitely not ideal for me and i much prefer having a few staple pieces that will last me a long time and suit my lifestyle.

Like “drink water!!!” is great, but what about dealing with perfectionism??? Idk those are just my thoughts.

Man I have thoughts on the issues of mental health within the studyblr community. It made my anxiety and depression way worse. Especially seeing people talk about how much people studied or blaming bad grades on a lack of discipline. The perfectionism in peoples notes. Even the idea that you have to get all As puts emphasis on something arbitrary. I hate that we value this warped notion of intelligence that’s based on test scores and university acceptances.
Also as an ex-elitist it’s so sad how people are so insecure that they feel like they have to put people down to bring themselves up. It’s infuriating that people don’t see the structures that make meritocracy inherently problematic (ableism being a Huge one).

Preach it girl! I love the study community but as a first gen student that NEEDS to work full-time in order to afford tuition while also helping my siblings with their online schooling, some parts of the community always felt a bit unrealistic to me personally. For example, study tips or even “productive” videos bother me sometimes because although the study tips/techniques are cool and can be useful for some people, for me they seem to be soooo time consuming and even expensive. I try to enjoy this content for simply being fun content, but it sucks that sometimes I am left feeling guilty or ashamed because im not being the type of student that I see in these videos. Sometimes I think youtubers forget that not everyone lives in a place where then can sit down, be alone and be “productive” for 5-10 hours straight when in reality most students have to manage school whenever they can due to other responsibilities.

6:47 so so true!! I attend to vocational school to study administrative assistance, and sometimes it's really hard because everyone treats me like I made some kind of stupid choice? I am always hearing things like "ah cool... but that's pretty easy tho","you are not really studying then", "but you had some of the best grades on your school, why are you doing this?", "and what are you gonna work at? A receptionist? Lol, ok", "Just hope you don't regret later". And those are not necessary comments coming from Karens, they also come from people of my age, old schoolmates and teachers, etc. Like I am tired of explaining myself, exposing my future plans or trying to justify my choices. Not going to an university doesn't makes me worthless. Yes, I wanna study administrative Assistance, and?. Yes, later I want to make government' exams to be a librarian, and? Yes, I know that I won't earn as much money as others, but who cares? I just want to be happy with the life choices that I make, not to choose things just because what I am supposed to do. And if you are not happy with my life choices? Not my problem, the thing is that I am satisfied with my life decisions. I am as worth as I would be studying at Harvard, sorry if you can't understand that.

this really rings true for me. i'm still somewhat young, in my early teens, and i already know what i want to do. i'm "gifted" or whatever so my parents think i'm wasting my potential by wanting to do what i really want- studying management of restauration establishment, because my dream is to open my own cafe. am i really wasting my potential by doing that, i don't think so. i'm tired of chasing money and fame because it's expected. the "hustle" isn't in me and i've accepted that i want a quieter life, less money, and i'd rather be not wasting my actual potential, my happiness. i'm okay with having less money, less vacations, a smaller house, if it means my day to day life won't be dull because i spent years chasing what people think i want when i don't value those things.

I learned to work with what I had. AND YES THE IPADS OML- That was also something I thought I needed to have to take once again, "pretty notes." Hey! I study Classics and English at Oxford so i guess i'm DaRk AcAdEmIa personified, and I completely agree with all of your critiques. I like the aesthetic, but that's because I like studying classics and that kind of style anyway. I hate the whitewashing and eurocentrism of the DA community. Most of the blogs I follow make a point to post poc in the da community, but there are precious few mainstream blogs that do the same. What really gets me is people treating the Secret History like it's some kind of bible as to how one should act to be "dark academia enough" when (in my reading of it at least) it's pretty clearly critiquing and taking jabs at that entire aesthetic. I relate to a lot of your critiques of the studyblr community and I'm so glad you brought them up bc I was starting to think that this was just what was normal now and it made me so uncomfortable - the consumerism, the classism, everything. Those comments on educational elitism really resonated with me. It's not really a studygram issue, but I think it's a societal issue.
We know that studying in community colleges/lower-ranked institutions doesn't matter, what matters more is what you do with the education you can afford. You're pretty smart if you score a stellar GPA in college, regardless of where you went.
But unfortunately, society doesn't feel the same. Employers (read: capitalists) don't feel the same. Having a degree from a prestigious university looks much better on a CV, and is a rather expensive ticket to better job opportunities and socio-economic standards in the future. Many degrees have become "worthless" (I mean, if you go back to the 90s or further behind, having a Bachelor's degree was a rarity), so now, the university you go to matters a lot. A degree from a lower-ranked university (even if it's the same subject, same title) is worthless compared to that from a higher-ranked university. It doesn't really make much sense, the more you think about it. It's why children as young as 13-14 plan their extra-curriculars and academics in such a way, they/their family sees entering a prestigious college as a means of securing their future in this world.
But such is our meritocratic capitalist society. Merit, in itself, may seem to be unbiased, but there are many background factors influencing merit - if you're better off, you can afford investing in private tuitions, better quality devices, et al to ensure that you attain merit. Merit doesn't narrow down wealth inequality, it exacerbates it. Even macroeconomic models can prove it.

"anyone can get a 4.0 if they put the time into studying" "she was surprised to hear i was in the dean's list and thought i was stupid" "i earned my good grades"
things i hear from my law school peers who lack insight and are out of touch with the fact that they have the time, resources, space, peace, mental stability, and background to achieve their ranks v. other students who lack those things or have disadvantages that prevent them from achieving their goals.
they "made it" bc they had the opportunity to. and yes studying and earning grades is a lot of hard work and takes a certain amount of grit/discipline, but realize that on top of your efforts, you had the OPPORTUNITY to achieve things that others can only dream of. you are not special or any smarter/better than others. you are a normal person with your own unique experiences that got you where you are because of certain skills/life circumstances. it is a mix. not everything depended on you.
i wish some of my classmates paused and realized others in their class or out in other departments struggle for reasons that aren't their fault and that they are not smarter than those who struggle, and might actually be undeserving of it when comparing actual intellect (NOT knowledge gained through books, time, resources, classes - but ACTUAL intelligence and cleverness).

I really love this video tbh and I want to share it with some people I know also struggle with the idea that they need to study 24-7, because even outside of the study community, some people enforce this idea that to be a good student and to get good grades you have to study every second of your life, be a perfect student, and always follow the herd. My personal experience with studying is that it's more effective for me to work when I feel motivated, not push myself to my limit trying to study for 7 hours on end. Another thing that I wish people would realize is that sacrificing mental health for the sake of grades isn't anything good. I've personally done it, and sometimes still do out of this fear that I won't be able to lead a decent life without good grades, but I'm self aware that it's unhealthy and that I use work sometimes to avoid my problems. I'm also aware that a lot of the time, the issue is not that I don't retain information, or that I didn't study enough, and it's just I have anxiety and my ability to do well under pressure is pretty low! I know it, and instead of pushing myself to a limit where my mental health is at risk and I'm focusing on the wrong thing, instead I should focus on communication, letting teachers know of the situation, and working on my anxiety a bit so I can perform better. I think sometimes we associate bad grades or one wrong thing (in this community) with a lack of studying, or we don't know the material well enough. It's probably not that, and there's an underlying factor that we oversee because we feel the pressure to be so "perfect" and study consistently. I'm so glad that someone addressed the things you did in this video because it's nice to see that people are aware of these issues and want to speak out about them. Thank you!

I went to a university in my state for my first degree, followed by a community college for a degree in a specialized trade, and I just tried one semester at a “prestigious” university in my state and THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE in the quality of education I received, and I will make note that I was taught by student aids at the prestigious university and not an actual doctor in the subject. After speaking to several possible future employers, unless you are going into a super niche field, the college you go to DOES NOT MATTER. I am leaving the prestigious school I am at now to go to the state school in my state to get my master’s. I will get my entire master’s degree at a state school for the price of one semester at the prestigious university here. Worth it.

Well dark academia isn’t accessible to everyone but the reality is that actually a lot of people who like it are indeed inclusive, but of course since the literature, the art and the fashion style who basically constitute dark academia are European, dark academia is Eurocentric. It’s also quite hypocritical how people who live in the US, no matter what their ethnicity is, are so quick to judge something that is Eurocentric when literally the whole internet revolves around US standards...
I also think that it is deeply wrong to condemn books such as the ones from Donna Tartt just because they revolve around white privileged wealthy people. Just because something doesn’t mention being antiracist (and the same could be said about any social issue) or doesn’t have diversity in its characters it doesn’t mean that it must be racist.
It seems to me as if lots of people nowadays like preaching about choices and freedom, but then put so many limitations that may not be formal but certainly end up being substantial because if pieces of literature or art in general don’t conform to those limitations it means they must be racist or homophobic or transphobic or elitist or whatever else.
Nobody is going to force aesthetics on you, you identify with it if you want to; dark academia is already changing and becoming more inclusive , which is great. I just wish people didn’t have to condemn something just because it is mostly centered around European culture (and guess what - without those European things dark academia wouldn’t even exist in the first place).

I was honestly looking for a video like this and I'm glad your video appeared in my recommendations. I've recently been watching study vlogs to sort of "motivate" me which they somehow they did, but I agree with what you said. Honestly, I can't study for 12-15 hours a day because I have to do other things too like laundry, washing the dishes, cleaning the house in general lol. There were also days when I couldn't bring myself to do anything school-related at all and even taking a bath was a huge task already. There were days when my worries and doubts eat me up that I just end up watching movies/series, spending time with my family, or not doing anything at all.
About the consumerism aspect, I have to agree as well. I've seen a lot of people with these many pens, highlighters, and other things which I think is okay if it helps them but not really necessary that everyone should get as well. Personally, my learning style is highlighting notes/printed handouts and writing some things on them, but I don't use like fancy pens or highlighters. Some of my highlighters and pens last up to a year and I'm contented with them. As long as they're working then I'm good. I also honestly can't afford to buy like 20+ highlighters/pens. I've seen people take aesthetic notes as well and if that is effective for them, then that's good. I just hope people don't force themselves to do these things because it's the trend. There are honestly a lot of ways on how to study aside from what we see here in youtube or other websites. I hope we all discover our own learning styles and productive hours. Also, don't forget to take breaks. Unwind from time to time too. And yes, it's okay if you're not productive all the time. Lastly, there is still an ongoing pandemic. Our health and survival should be our top most priority right now.
Anyway, got carried away in typing this comment. Hope you all do well in your studies but mostly in surviving and living life during this pandemic. Advance Merry Christmas! Hope you all reading this are safe and healthy.

On dark academia: I like dark academia on a very surface level and I only learned of this aesthetic like 2 months ago. I haven't watched any movies or read books that are hyped in the community. And I don't lile Harry Potter (someone commented that people in dark academia haven't gotten over not receiving their Hogwarts letter). I just really like the xlothing style and the vintage aesthetics. And I never realized the europecentrism (is that the word?) was a problem. That is probably bc I am European and obviously my entire life is europecentrist and so are the things I learned in school. I had latin in school, learned about great European artists, musicians and writers and had to read Shakespeare. I always liked visiting old castles and other buildings, which there are plenty of in Europe. So I feel like enjoying dark academia as a European isn't that weird, bc especially for my country, the aesthetics have been its actual aesthetic some time ago. This is not me disagreeing with you, I totally agree and I think it is especially bad to glorify certain artists that actually were kinda horrible people and I find parts of the academia community very pretentious. I kinda just wanted tl share my thoughts from a European perspective.
Edit: I also read a comment about including Arabian, Egyptian and East Asian etc academic aesthetics and I would love to see that.
I also read a comment about how dark academia stems from European culture and therefore it is logical for it to be centered on Europe and I agree. You wouldn't go to native Americans and tell them their culture isn't diverse enough just bc it does not include black people. You cannot blame dark academia for Americans taking it and then saying it is too European. I think it would be cool to start different academia aestgetics for different cultures. And you can totally argue that European culture has very racist and colonialist sides to it but that doesn't nullify the culture. You just gotta be careful with glorifying people and stuff.
Edit 2: Now thinking about it I find it slightly weird that some Non-Europeans obsess over our culture to the point of blind glorification. It is okay to be interested in a culture and to like the music etc but some take it too far.

    • @imme9196
      @imme9196 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@kitbracadabra I disagree. You will never ask for the same treatment in other cultures
For example: a white person would never be considered african or asian, even if they were born there. And for obvious reason. Therefor, a white person would never be included in those culture representations, aesthetics, and so on. So why should black and asians be included just because they live in Europe? They were not part of that culture in the past
Just like only chinese will be represented for chinese aesthetic like the historic ones, because there were only chinese people, or native american for that type of aethetic and representation. In fact, if a white person is added on those aethetic, it is considered cultural appripiation, but apparently it's not available for european culture when others want to be added
Imo, there is nothing wrong with things focused on europeans if the subject is that culture. So let it be like that
