    The thing is that the good things about the That Girl Aesthetic (Working out, moving your body, waking up early and eating healthy)
    Are things that any aesthetic could apply to their lives, those are just good habits! The moment it becomes an aesthetic is when it mixes with the visual aspect and commodification of it, so I don't think "That Girl" could be or has ever been about the 'values'

    This is why I love your context Seo. Maybe I'm just on the wrong side of the internet 90% of the time but your one out of two TH-camrs I found that don't constantly promote consumerism, toxic productivity (well you recognize the times you might have in the past), and are genuine with social and racial problems you encounter or see, especially in this studygram community.

    love your commentary on the subject, exactly what i was thinking and what i see a lot of other poc creators saying about it too! but to add on to ur point about manifestation, i definitely feel it is real to a certain extent BUT manifestation alone isn't going to get you anything if you're not working for what you want as well. telling ppl to manifest their way into their goals is unrealistic if they're not helping themselves get there.

    • @tbhstudying
      @tbhstudying  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      def true! reframing your mindset and focusing on your goals isn't inherently a negative thing. i just think it's irresponsible to tell people that they just need to manifest harder when the obstacles they're facing are things like generational trauma and poverty, workplace inequities, lack of housing, racism and xenophobia, etc etc etc. my fury is mainly targeted at influencers who market manifestation and success classes to people (primarily AFAB people) and it overlaps so much with the MLM sphere too.

    As always, I love your thoughts on these subjects~ the "that girl" aesthetic is hard because of what you said, it looks like we're celebrating toxic productivity. And what I always notice is that there isn't any time in these that-girl vlogs for yourself. You have the gratitiude journal but it seems more of a chore, another step in the day and not something that's genuine to the heart, for you. From an opposite end, not everyone's job is online or have a normal routine. It doesn't really give space to people's jobs and those who are following that-girl routines then having sopntanous appointments often cause spirals to time management and breaking structure.

      im doing another challenge where i try to do morning pages / gratitude journaling for 3 months and it's literally so hard! some days, it feels like a chore and i find myself expressing more negativity than actual gratitude :(

    Hey hey. I wanted to say I really appreciate your content. I found you like a year before your stationary no-buy (thx algorithm) and then when you shifted your content that really helped. Like really. When you were talking about feeling the need to buy certain things because everybody uses them in that community it really hit me. This happened to me in the bullet journal and health/kinda-that-girl side of media (support small businesses but fuck protein powder). Your stationary no-buy definitely made me come back down to earth and now this video made me realise that I should also overthink the importance of other objects that are made to look necessary for success.
    Much love and appreciation, can’t wait to see your next video!

    Great take! As with anything I think this trend is only worth taking on if it serves you and inspires you to be better. Personally I like this trend as I feel like there is a bit of a "healthy habit bashing" happening before - people were celebrating having a messed up sleep schedule, being a mess etc which made me feel bad about sharing anything positive.

    • @tbhstudying
      @tbhstudying  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      true! i don't think that working out and expressing gratitude is inherently bad? i just think that it becomes problematic when the notion of developing better habits gets commodified and gentrified :(

  • @elodiepollock7326
    @elodiepollock7326 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i fully agree with your points!
    one thing I'd like to add is that I always thought that all those things like working out, eating lots of veggies and fruit, being mindful and practicing gratitude are all things that are generally really healthy and can surely be beneficial for almost anyone, but the content you find to the That Girl Aesthetic all suggest that there is a certain pensum you need to fulfil so that it counts like run x amount, eat this much of that, do this that many times. and at that point it turns non-inclusive because what about people with for example chronic illnesses? what about people with clinical depression that can hardly get out of bed? (to mention only two things) not everyone is able to live up to that, so definitely not everyone can be That Girl
    of course it has its positives, but staying critical is important, which is why appreciate you making content like this so much :))

    • @tbhstudying
      @tbhstudying  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no literally, i could never do the "that girl" routine when i was in the lightest of my depressive episodes. it's hard to maintain even when i'm relatively stable and mentally healthy!

    completely agree with all your points except for manifestation! my critique of it is that it's essentially been stolen from Hinduism (like most of spirituality) and watered down for white people and now we have these white people claiming that their chakras have been opened or that they've manifested their dream lives without understanding what it means-- and i fully understand and accept that there might not be a huge amount of overlap between the that girl aesthetic and the spirituality people but i think it's starting to meld more and more

    oh thank god you hate this “aesthetic” too. i think this trend also doesn’t account for people who work 8 hrs a day and don’t have time to walk/workout/etc every day along with raising kids, cooking, appointments, kids’ clubs, etc. it would be much harder for a person with that lifestyle to commit to this aesthetic than a tiktok influencer whose job is just to post lifestyle videos.

    So, I enjoy the motivational part of the that girl aesthetic, but I think it becomes a problem as soon as it hits the all or nothing and consumerist attitude. Because even though I am privileged enough to be a white slim middle class woman, it's impossible to achieve as a 24/7 lifestyle as someone who struggles with mental health. Yet I've seen people portrait the that girl stuff as a way of "getting rid" of your mental health issues. And while yes, that might work for some light feelings of depression with the whole movement and routine for people with mental illness this whole toxic productivity and all or nothing thing is unachievable. Yeah, of course I feel better when I exercise somewhat regularly within my capacity and eat healthy food, but that doesn't mean, I don't need meds or therapy anymore. And don't even get me started on the whole manifestation and gratitude stuff. I'd love to hear your opinion on it in a video tho.

    Sorry this is unrelated, but I know in one of your older posts you had a way of applying heat to your books to erase the frixion pens and highlighters in your books. Can you explain how you did that? I'm a teacher and I want to let my kids write directly in their books, but I'm not sure if you were putting them on a hot plate or something. Sorry if I made that up or it was a different creator.

    First, I hate this trend because it makes it seem like the vegan diet/green things to eat is the only healthy diet and the only way to live. Different cultures have different diets and different definitions of health. Every individual has different definition of health.
    It makes sense if a lot of people just happen to have a similar diet as healthy, since most of the that girl trend is westernised to begin with. But people from other countries also consume this content and veganism is not sustainable in a lot of other countries. Neither is it financially beneficial or good for environment.
    If you can afford vegan food sources and your country can provide them without exploitation, sure, go ahead and be vegan.
    But for other people, locally sourced food is the healthiest and better for the environment. So... that should be considered before the 'that girl' trend sends the whole message of one-fit-for-all health by veganism and stuff.
