FYI The scene towards the end where the guy ends up in the dentist's chair and the dentist asking him "Is it safe?" is from a movie called "The Marathon Man". The scene in that movie was truly horrifying.

The humor in Hot Shots works so well because everyone plays it as straight as possible. Not acknowledging the absurdity is almost as funny as the absurdity itself. Lloyd Bridges excells at this style of comedy and he has some of my favorite gags.
The sequel is also quite funny, but has a lot more reference humor and may leave you lost at times. Some movies to consider if you want to catch some of the references - Rambo 2, Apocalypse Now, Wall Street, and Platoon.

The native american scenes with the wolf were referencing Dances With Wolves.
I haven’t watched all your vids so I don’t know if you’ve already mentioned it, but what is your long time favourite movie (or type of movie) ?
The dentist scene “Is it safe?”, is referencing a famous Dustin Hoffman movie The Marathon Man. The scene they are referencing is about a guy getting tortured and he doesn’t even know why he’s getting tortured and it’s very intense and Dustin Hoffman’s performance is great.
The joke she told you didn't get was about American baseball.
"I'm going to Disneyland" is what winning Super Bowl quarterbacks said to the camera after the game.

The joke about Didneyland is that they used to be one of the sponsors of the Superbowl. They had a deal with one of the winning players, usually the quarterback. At the end of the game, they would ask the player about his new found fame, and the player would say they were going to Disneyland.
Also, the scene at the end with the dentist was making fun of a scene in The Marathon Man, which was a good Dustin Hoffman movie.
Yes, those two WERE in Two & a Half Men together. Also, the sequel to this, Hot Shots Part Deux, is just as funny, but it’s a Rambo parody instead of Top Gun.
ALSO, also, the elephant with three “balls” was a bad baseball joke ⚾️, and the “Disneyland” bit at the end was a reference to when Disney would pay the MVP of the super bowl or some other sport championship to promote the park like so… “Now that you’ve won the Super Bowl, Eli Manning, what are you going to do next?” “I’m going to Disney World!” (…or “Land”).

Thanks for clearing that up. Explains why I didn't get either of them. Baseball isn't very big over here.
The “I’m going to Disneyland” reference is a Super Bowl tradition. Reporters would interview a player on the team that won the Super Bowl. The reporter would ask the player what are you going to do next, and they would say, “I’m going to Disneyland”. This was big back in the 80s and 90s.
Ahh thank you, that helps. Though standing in line for hours doesn’t sound like a great way to celebrate.

Fun Fact: Some of the previews for the film jokingly claimed that Saddam Hussein's role was played by himself.
Bonus Fact: Charlie Sheen references Paula Abdul at one point. Paula Abdul was married to Charlie Sheen's brother, Emilio Estevez, at the time of the film's release.
Bonus Fact: The aircraft carrier on which the movie takes place is actually a wooden deck built on the edge of a cliff at a deserted Marineland facility. The film was shot at an angle that made the deck look like a ship at sea.

Also check out Part 2 as well as 'National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1' with Charlie's brother - Emilio Estevez & Nick Fury & Shaft himself - Samuel L Jackson (but make sure you see Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 before you see Loaded Weapon 1 in order to get many of the jokes that they are parodying)...
