The thing that is so unusual about the character of Thomas is that the audience simultaneously roots for him and reviles him. He's flawed and despicable but so beautiful and wounded by not being acceptable in the world where he finds himself. Don't you want to grab his hand and pull him into the 21st century and bring him to a gay club? he would be a king.
I cried. Thomas is not just my favorite person in Downton Abbey, he is my favorite person of all the favorite characters I´ve ever had and I love him so much. He has never been really happy and if this is not getting better in season 6 - I don´t know. I truly adore him. And I feel so sorry for him. Everybody hates him but he is not that bad, he is just unhappy.
The blind soldier is Edward Courtenay, and yeah I think Thomas had feelings for him. And even if he didn't, the soldier was one person who didn't judge him and who wanted to be his friend... Since Thomas barely has good friends, that would've meant a lot to him.
He's my favorite character too. I see so many nice comments here, it makes me so happy that he's appreciated for who he really is. You can't like him at the beginning when you don't know his story, that would be evil lol. But he's so complex, he deals with issues that are so hard to face and he does it on his own, which makes him so beautifully human. My mother is catching up with the show and she's just starting, she's like "I hate him he's so evil why does he have to be mean to everyone!!!" and I'm like "yeah I know..." but in my head it's like "don't badmouth him mom you don't know anything" lol
