    - Trigger warnings for attempted suicide and homophobia
    - HD, small screens please :)
    - I recently rewatched all of downton abbey in prep for the movie next month! I had forgotten how much i adore this character HE DESERVES THE WORLD
    - we need to protect this precious misunderstood bean
    - I hope Thomas gets love (finally) in the movie! T_T
    - I couldn't fit everything in that I wanted to so the ending is a little messy... oops

When I began watching DA, I never knew Thomas would be my favorite character. He was so unhappy and just wanted to be loved and a place where he felt he belonged to. When I heard a movie were being made I only wanted to see Thomas finally happy. I'm glad they did him justice.

Thomas is the reason I've re-watched DA about 30 times in a row. Such a complicated and charming character. Like, WHO changed THAT much during the 6 seasons? Nobody! It's only Thomas who went through his transformation, and through suicide he discovered the reason that is making him unhappy, and actually DID try to become a BETTER PERSON. Nobody else in the entire series did that. No such transformation among ALL other characters. Am I going to watch the DA movie?? Hell, I AM! And that's 95% because of Thomas Barrow.

I perfectly understand why he hated Bates almost all the time. He worked his whole life, just to make it steady and to feel safe somewhere. He found abbey and he was a really good worker(well, he could steal some wine, yeah, but even Carson stole some products for his friend, I don't see much difference). He was almost a valet, but then Bates came, so his hopes were ruined. Of course, you would be jealosing, if you've been hard working, but all of the sweets are coming to a new guy. And you know, if Mr. Bates didn't come, Thomas probably wouln't have been thrown out of house at the end. I mean, how can we see, Bates was a valet all this time, so Thomas wouln't really have to think about where to go after being kicked out. So yeah, his fears about this new valet were totally reasonable, it did get him into trouble.
Also I want to say that it's easy to say that everyone has to be nice when you don't have a really bad life experience. I mean, I'm not saying that Anna, Bates or anyone else always had a sunny days, no, everyone went through some rainy days. But, as we know, they don't have this permanent problem that becoming heavier every day, so it's really difficult to carry it on your own. Everyone has troubles, yeah, but some of us just don't have a lot of reasons to get up in the morning. Thomas was waking up every day, opening his eyes and understanding that this day wouldn't be any easier than any other. He was understanding, that there is no one in the whole world who misses or thinks about him. We all feel this way sometimes, but somewhere deeper we know that there can be our parents, friends or anyone else who cares, so we were alright eventually. And Thomas knew that it wasn't true for him. I just don't have any idea about how could he coped with all of it. So yeah, it's easy to be nice when you have support from your close people.

Julian Fellowes created a Gay character in his series, and showed how difficult it was to live in such a homophobic society, but somehow couldn't conceive that there would be other Gay men "in service" that he could encounter.

    Spoiler for a movie:
I'm very glad that they gave him Richard. Yes, it's kinda looks as a dream(and a whole movie too, but anyway), but it was important to see. I felt happy, because they showed that there will be happiness if you wait, it inspires somehow. Even Thomas Barrow can get what he needed for about 30 years of cold loneliness.
And that's all for today, I just REALLY needed to tell someone all of it, but no one around watched downton) Sorry for my bad english, I' m not a native speaker, hah. And thanks again💕

  • @denisiyaden1231

Wonderful editing. Thank you for showing everything so I don't have to rewatch series almost only for him. And now I'm going to write a huge text(sorry, I need to say a lot of stuff) Thomas is truly a complex character as everyone says. He built his life using his own hands, energy and spirit - there was no one who could/wanted to help him, he is quite strong. I don't want to say that I feel like we are similiar, because I never was really bad behaving with anyone, but there are bad periods in my life that can be long. When nothing good happens to me and the whole world seems to be the darkest place in the universe, I feel this anger growing inside of me. Not like I'm becoming evil, but every time I feel that I don't want to waste my energy for pretending that I'm happy for someone, for doing something that I don't want, or I don't want to endure anyone’s rudeness anymore. You know, it feels like you have already been through a lot of things and then, when something seems to be joking with you, you just don't let it joking any way you can, even if you are being mean and not fair to someone. I'm not saying that it can be a good reason for being bad with people, no, of course it's better not to hurt anyone, but I'm trying to say that I certainly understand why he does everything that we see. Even in season one, when he was a real jerk - you can ask me about every his action and I will answer. I just think that if you meet a person who is kinda mean and seems to have really cold nature, you shouldn't judge him immediately. Of course, I met people who weren't nice at all and I could even hate them, but EVERY time, may be at the very ending, I discovered or I was told about their life problems(for example, one had a really bad father, who was beating him. And his Mother was always at the work or in some other place, so he never felt the warmth of living in family). It can be difficult to do, but Thomas is a great example - every time someone was nice to him, he tried to change and do good things. Remember Jimmy? He always tried to showed his best sides. Or Baxter. She helped him, so he tried to be friends with her. He even started to respect Molesley, because he knew that Baxter likes Molesley. He always asks "what's the matter?" when he sees that Anna or Daisy are upset, because they are the ones who sometimes shows that they understand him and even give some support

Oh god this video made me SOB. I have always loved Thomas, since the very beginning and I just knew that he was deserving of love and affection even if both he and others couldn’t realize it until it was almost to late. He is the reason I watch and rewatch the show endlessly. As a bitchy, gay, sarcastic person I just see so much of myself in him, the walls he has created, the wish that he could just be ✨normal✨, the compulsive need to be loved and how in the process of protecting himself from the world he just ends up harming himself. Seriously, I have never identified with a character so much and I cannot bring myself to understand the people who hate him. (Also I truly appreciated how it never was a question of who he was or who he loved to him, because confusion is almost always present in LGBTQ+ characters in media and it’s refreshing to see someone who knows who he is (at least in that respect))

I can't express how much I love the character of Thomas Barrow. In the first two seasons I was unsure and I kind of disliked him from time to time (I think everyone did.) But as soon as you find out a bit more about him and why he behaves the way he does, he's probably the greatest character in the whole series (after Lady Sybil of course). I love Thomas to bits and I also wish a happy ending for him (with Richard of course.. even if it's only in our imagination 😍)

This video edit is WONDERFUL!!! I loved every second of it!!!
Thomas has been my favourite character since season one, he is such a complex and deep character! If only others understood that the problem was not his lack of heart, but the lack of people who loved him, cared about him, truly knew him and understood him ... (Stop reading if you have not seen the film.)
I was so happy when he finally received the happiness and the love he truly deserved. Not only by Richard, but also by other characters like ms Baxter, who started to understand and support him, and to overcome all the prejudices people had about him. He also had a great (but really sad) storyline and character developement🖤🖤🖤
(At some point, I just wanted to hug and confort him)

There was a Merchant-Ivory movie "Maurice", an adaptation of E M Forster's posthumous novel about the travails of a closeted young man in roughly the same time period. In despair of his "aberrant" nature, the eponymous hero goes to a quack hypnotist (Ben Kingsley) to be "cured". The hypnotist gives Maurice the sage advice of moving to a country where homosexuality is legal "as the British will never understand human nature". According to a film critic who attended the preview performance, there was a gasp of sympathetic agreement from the largely English audience at this observation.
Bertie Pelham's cousin Peter took that course of action - and found both artistic and sexual fulfillment in Tangiers.

    • @amylumet554
      @amylumet554 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm so glad you mentioned Maurice! The adaptation of E.M. Forster's story -- with , aws you mentioned, the great Ben Kingsley as the creepiest quack conversion therapist ever -- also came to mind ewhen Thomas Barrow nearly died from the Conversion therapy ! For those who have missed Maurice-- most of you are probably half my age, the film showcased 3 major stars early in their careerrs as well: Hugh Grant, Rupert Graves, and James Wilby. It was very daring for its time, as though Maurice follows a love story between two young men at Cambridge, one must marry. The title character, Maurice, is so frightened of the very high likelihood of blackmail, arrest, and ruin (even the son of a Duke is arrested and sentenced to years in prison ) that he almost misses a second chance at love. I love this film, and when it was released in 1987, it was still early in the AIDS crisis in the US, and if it weren't for beautiful period pieces from the Brits -- Another Country with Rupert Everett and Cary Elewes is another that comes to mind -- the few films with gay protagonists were very bleak films which reflected the fear and lack of information and treatments for AIDS. In terms of American Film's, Mart Crowley's brilliantly written ensemble film "Boys in the Band" ireleased in the early seventies about 5 very different friends--in the West Village Pre-Stonewall -"Summer '68" is written on a wall is the one MUST SEE for fans or collectors of great movies.

At first, I didn't like Thomas. Not as much like O'Brien, but still. I knew he has a sad storym, but I still didn't like him. But later, especially when my favorite character dies, I started realise how interesting character he is, with such a development. I love Thomas! (espiecially on the finale, when he was...nice).

Watched this and still disliked his character.
