      Great choice Mark, you can do virtually everything with three lights. Arm yourself with some reflectors as well, always very useful to have in the kit.

    This looks awesome. I love the mood, lighting, composition and the imagery.
    Is that chapel accessible to photographers who want to shoot on location to build their portfolios?
    I am looking at creating some wedding photos shot in a chapel and lit with Rotalight Neo 2 lights?
    Who would I need to speak to gain access to the chapel or if needs be hire it for a few hours?
    Thanks in advance for the feedback.

    Some nice images you've captured there. I'm interested in the Rotolight Neo2, but still a bit concerned at its lack of power in flash mode, as evidenced here ( ISO400+ and f1.4 with key light very close to subject ). Terry, can I ask what the ambient exposure was in the scene ? I'm assuming you've chosen 1/250th shutter speed to darken the background a stop or two. Also, were you using the Neo2 with batteries only ? ( as opposed to the D-Tap charger which gives a power output boost ).

    • @TerryDonnelly
      @TerryDonnelly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, depending on where you are geographically, a trip to a trade show where you can see the lights in action and try yourself is probably a worthwhile thing to do.
      I only used flash mode on one set, and the NEO2 is 2 or 3 metres away from the model, the flash wasn't on full power and was powered by 6 x Rotolight Lionheart double A batteries by Powerex.
      1/250sec shutter speed selected to lower the ambient light and protect the window detail, aperture of f/1.4 selected to separate the model from the background. I'd be working the same settings if I had used speedlights or studio lights also, its not just because I was shooting Rotolights I was at f/1.4. The added bonus with the Rotolights is that I didn't need to use softboxes to soften the light.

      Thanks for the reply Terry, and also thank you for the offer of showing the lights in action ( I live up north in Scotland ). I'll probably get a chance to see them at a trade show in March I think ... at the very latest. Interesting to know you were using the rechargeable batteries - I believe the V-lock battery pack grants a substantial boost in power output, perhaps another stop, or more ? And yes, the quality of light does look very soft & appealing.
      Now, I am under no illusion that I'll be using this product to overpower the sun ; I tend not to shoot in that type of environment anyway. Most of my work is indoors, low light & shallow DOF, similar to what you are doing in this video ... I like subtle lighting, and with the continuous LED output I think it will be easier to judge what the lighting is going to achieve before the shot is taken, certainly compared to speedlights.
      I remain firmly interested. I think my ideal would be one Aeos ( used as key light ) and two Neo2's for ambient / hair light / separation lighting. However, I am a Fuji user so I've been sitting on the sidelines waiting for Elinchrom to bring out the appropriate HS trigger.

    • @Rotolight
      @Rotolight 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dj Suth, thanks for your interest in the NEO 2 and AEOS :) Given the locations you said you typically shoot, a Rotolight would be perfect for you! The ability to have both a continuous light AND a flash in one product allows you to get exposure in low light pre-flash and the ability to tune the colour temp and the brightness will also be a benefit to ensure you have the right level of subtle lighting to suit your style.
      The Elinchrom HS trigger is hopefully coming out very soon, they have informed us they are working on it as we speak! :)
      If you have a chance to get to SWPP next week or perhaps The Photography Show in March we'll be there and would love to give you a demo and answer any queries.
      Please let us know if you have any more questions in the meantime! Best wishes

      Thanks for the reply. I'll be attending the Photography Show in March ( still to decide which day ), so would appreciate a demonstration then. As I've mentioned already I'm really just waiting for Elinchrom to produce their Fuji trigger ; I know pairing a Godox receiver with each NEO / AEOS would work but using just one native transceiver is a more elegant solution ( and functional ).

    Good Morning Terry,
    I have now used my NEO 2, on camera for two events and a press conference. The performance of this lamp is incredible. One does need a little practice in order to find the right settings but once you have then WOW! The NEO 2 has attracted considerable interest amongst other journalist colleagues. In fact two of them asked where they can get one.
    The images I shot and straight out of the camera (Sony A7 - cannot afford a new one yet) are very good*. What I do like is that one requires to carry out very little post and that is a great time saver. I have found one can actually spoil a good image trying to tweak with post.
    Some of my images suffer from noise* - I also noticed in the metadata the flash is not registered as having fired (flash did not fire). Perhaps Rotolight can give an answer to this?
    As you use both NEO 2 and AWOS I have a question. How strong are the AEOS lamps Yes I know the claim

    • @dasphotography7021
      @dasphotography7021 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops, don't know what happened here - How strong are the AEOS lamps Yes I know the claim 5750 Lux but what is that in watts? If someone tells me that is lit with a 100 watt bulb that means something but 2000 lux (NEO 2) or 5750 Lux AEOS leaves me baffled. I know there are programmes online to convert one to the other but they demand the angle of light spread in order to calculate.
      The reason I am asking, you have both NEO 2 and AEOS. I believe the NEO 2 is ideal for model work but for my use, interior design/real estate they (3 set) wouldn't be powerful enough. Would the AEOS (dual kit) cover my needs? I use strobes at the moment. What do you think?

    • @idazi2785
      @idazi2785 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well this is a difficult one to answer as the photography and lighting world has taken on the Watts as a measure but that only really means how much power is used. This also doesnt take into account that the watts of a flash or strobe is a harsh light source and needs diffusing, the Rotolights on the other hand are a larger, softer light source so needs little to no diffusion.
      The spread of light also plays a factor as we are giving soft wrapping light not a harsh beam of light. So the equivalent would be around a 250 - 300 watt but remember you dont need to diffuse the light.
      Remember it is not about out and out power but how much power you can actually use.

    Interesting. However, I notice all these demos of the NEO 2, particular those with Jason Lanier are carried out in darkness or in very poor light. I did watch a shoot by someone else during the day, the NEO 2 had to be positioned LESS than a metre from the models face, It actually looked like 50 to 50 centimetre - and this was not in sunlight.
    I was so enthusiastic about the NEO 2, I wanted to place an order for same. I actually have an offer from a supplier on my desk at the moment - now I am not sure at all.
    The power output is given as 2000 lux, Sounds great but if all these demos are carried out at night then perhaps this light is not for me?
    I photograph real estate as well as commercial photography. For portraits of senior management I would need a minimum of two NEO 2 lights. In a factory, they just would not suffice at all.
    Do I buy one to try or put the money towards another strobe or even save longer and invest in an Aeos???

      @TerryDonnelly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, only you can decide what is going to be the most fitting light for your needs and way of shooting between the NEO2 and AEOS. I can't comment on the other video you watched in the day, as I have no knowledge of it, but
      I like to shoot in environmental locations with atmosphere and mostly these places are derelict and have low light. I have shot portraits with NEO2 and AEOS in much lighter conditions and been very happy with the results.
      I will usually place the light as close to my subject as possible, but this is not because of power issues.
      Hope this helps

    • @dasphotography7021
      @dasphotography7021 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Terry, thanks for your comment. I see you have invested a lot in Rotlichts, what with AEOS., I believe someone spotted 2 as well as, from your description 2 NEO 2 lights. A substantial investment! I'm still undecided, in fact I am surfing the internet with a view to buying another strobe.
      It would be nice to hear the views of other real estate photographers on this subject.

      Hi Terry, Well, I DID buy the NEO2 - picked it up yesterday. WOW -the images and straight out of the camera!!! I DO have one BIG problem; where on earth can you get a PC sync cable so that I can use it on camera? I have spent ages surfing the internet but cannot find a suitable cable. OK, I can find cables with the micro usb for the Sony but all on offer have a 2.5mm plug on the other end. As you know, one needs a 3.5mm plug to go into the NEO2.

      @TerryDonnelly  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Desmond, great you took the plunge and are enjoying the NEO2!
      If your camera has a PC synch port on the camera body there is a cable available on www.rotolight.com/product/3-5mm-flash-pc-sync-cable/
      If your camera does not have a PC synch port there is a flash shoe that sits on the hot shoe of your camera that has a PC port built in to it.
      www.rotolight.com/product/rl-flash-shoe/
      I'd also recommend Rotolight Lionheart AA rechargeable batteries for maximum performance from the NEO2.

    Could you please tell us something about your triggers? I can´t get my Godox X1 T and R for Sony to work on my Sony a6300.

    • @dasphotography7021

      My X1-Ts works fine but the X1R-S doesn't. For this reason I have ordered the X1R-N (Nikon) which I have been told works? It should arrive this afternoon so I can keep you posted today.

    • @Rotolight
      @Rotolight 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Godox have a known fault with the X1R-S not talking to the X1T-S when using any third party flash - they have actually released a Godox firmware update fix for this which we can supply if you email sales@rotolight.com . But yes the X1T-S will work with the X1R-N very well and in HSS so that works great. Its a Godox fault.

    • @dasphotography7021
      @dasphotography7021 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Godox X1R-N (Nikon) has arrived and works perfectly. I am very pleased with the result. I am just about to order another two of these units. If I could get the X1R-S working with a fix that would be great. I would then have four receivers!! I tried to update the firmware in my X1T-S but Godox with regard to their IT are still living in the dark ages and do not offer the update via OSX (Mac). In 2009 I threw ALL my windows computers out of my office and replaced the whole IT landscape with iMacs and MacBook Pros. Since then I have never suffered one second of downtime nor blue screens! Bye for now.

      From Rotolight: Hi thanks for your email.
      You will have to go through the Godox site as you need their updater to do the firmware update.
      www.godox.com/EN/Download.html
      You need the Godox G1 updater and the X1R-s V05 firmware.
      My answer to Rotolight: Hi Darrel,
      THAT is a problem because they do not provide an update via OSX (Mac) - only windows! I threw my complete windows computers out in 2009 and replaced the whole lot with iMacs and MacBook Pros.
      Since 2009 I have NO access to a Windows PC.
      Looks like I am stuck with the old firmware permanently?

    I have one of the first Rotolights and whilst it is useable for video, it was always quite useless for most photo situations. I'd love to consider buying out one neo 2, or even the kit after some point, but I am still not very much convinced on the "power side"... And adding to my doubts is seeing that despite using a 1.4 aperture here, and having the key Neo2 at a relatively close distance, you have pumped ISO's between 400 - 500 ... Not that it's very problematic, but nevertheless, you are already having to introduce minore noise in your pics... I give it to you, you are shooting at 1/250th, but still, I would love to see shootings at Speedlight "standards" of 1/125th and ISO 100 to stretch the eventual limits of this light...
    Thank you for your video nevertheless!

    • @serag6308
      @serag6308 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It also makes me wonder, why are you shooting at such high speeds :)

    • @TerryDonnelly
      @TerryDonnelly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sergio, my camera settings are based on the available light in the chapel to record details particularly in the glass window. Even if I had shot this set with speedlights, these camera settings would have been the same.
      Shooting a Sony A9 at ISO400 is not pumping the ISO, these cameras can shoot at much higher ISO with no perceivable noise and ISO400 is in what I consider the lower end of the operating range for ISO on this camera.
      If you get chance to try a NEO2 I don't think you would be disappointed with it.

      Terry Donnelly thank you very much for providing even more insight... I've been "sniffing" around online about the mighty a9.... Although I've read that Sony sensors are still more deficient managing low light situations than current competitors like canon etc... but then, I'm aware that anything goes in online reviews... thank you again! Great shooting! Is it Ireland? I wish I can go someday visit that amazing country
