    I know Jason Lanier promotes Rotolight frequently in his videos, but this is the best real use example of the Neo I've seen. Nice work.

    I just purchased one myself in December thanks to Jason Lanier...has taken my work to a whole new level! An excellent video with like you said minimal accessories ..probably one of the best examples I've seen to date other than Jason lol...those two at night with the tree and bokeh...super images!!

    Beyond cool! I feel like I could actually do some shots like this with a Rotolight, you make it look so easy! Your selection of background colors behind Sam at the table blended very well. I also liked the photos at the brick wall after dark with the shallow depth of field!! My favorite however, was the window reflection image!! Masterfully done! Thank you for sharing!!

    Whoa, LOVED this shoot. Stayed for the whole video. I just attended Jason's workshop this week and was considering getting a NEO or ANOVA PRO and see YOU use the Neo like you did and get such awesome results has inspired me to take action and make the purchase. The image with the green tree on the right and lights on the left is STUNNING. I really enjoyed this and I REALLY appreciate how you gave Jason a few shoutouts when using the backlight technique. Seriously great video, thank you!

    Been hesitant to purchase a Neo due to the price and the fact that I'm a hobbyist to semi-pro photographer and the fact that I figured I would need two to three of these lights. Seeing your video (along with a one day sale at B&H) I went for it! Can't wait for it to arrive. Thanks for the video guys.

    Great video that really shows how to get some fabulous shots with that rotolight, something that I will definitely be looking into. Your use of such a simple setup and yielding such amazing photos was truly wonderful to watch, as the ambient light faded the fill from the single light seemed to just make your photos pop more and more the darker it got throughout the evening to such an amazingly beautiful final setup in the street with some truly spectacular shots!!! Wonderful work David and a huge shout out to beautiful Sam for a wonderful shoot and video!

    when he came back at 13.00, the light barely changed, I actually think this light only works in dark situations, night time, but for daytime photography it doesent seem to work. For black and white portraits in studio, black background im sure the results will be amazng. You do get the little catchlight in the eyes.

    Would have helped if you'd mentioned the camera settings more often. It's hard to assess the ambient because the video brightens it up much more than the eye sees. I could then assess how much the neo actually adds.

    Do you use any of the accessories for the Neo (diffuser, grid, softbox, etc) or do you just use it with a reflector?

    Great video! Very helpful just watching the shoot and the minimalist setups. I couldn't help but notice it looks as though you're shooting with a Zeiss lens on a Sony but it looks as though you've got an adapter for it.... Is it an A mount to E mount?

    • @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC
      @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! Yes I use the 135mm Zeiss with the LA-EA4 to go from A to A mount. The AF is less than desirable so I use it as a manual focus lens. The optical quality of that lens is second to none.

    • @PeterCat1111
      @PeterCat1111 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure the focus peaking feature makes manual focus that much easier! I've been wanting and waiting to make the switch back to Sony (the RX100 mk1 started my interest in photography) and then went with Nikon since I could get a body and a few lenses for the price of the A7 body.... With the new G-master lenses being released, I'm patiently waiting (and saving) for an update to the A7rII. I may have to wait another year though from the looks of it.

    Ok, that does it! I'm getting at least one of these. I like my alien bees and power pack but they are bulky and heavy. Not only that but I often need an ND filter to keep the shutter within sync speed. Something that can be done without filters using constant lights. And at $399 they are so affordable.
    Thanks for your inspiration!

    • @Larslovesjhoney
      @Larslovesjhoney 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +in2food $399 affordable? :( Price made me cry! I'm a student though, so that might be the reason.

      +Lars Sanen yeah, I guess we're all in different places. Compared to other highly portable light sources this is affordable. But as a student I could see where you are experiencing limitations. I'm an old dude with no kids left at home and no other expensive hobbies.

    I hate to be "that guy" asking about settings but I have to ask about the shot at 20:15 with the flash from behind. I just tried a quickie version in my house and the flash lit up the hole area around my subject so I didn't get the same "halo". I see no snoot on your flash. How did you control the flash and limit it to just the subject? Thanks!

    • @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC
      @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +in2food The speed light was placed on the ground approx. 4 ft. behind Sam and aimed at her back. I am not sure of the power settings I used but do recall zooming the flash in. I bet if you try again outside in a near dark environment you will get a different look. You won't have surfaces like inside your house that will bounce the light around.

      can you help?
      I'm hoping to get my hands on A6300, I wanna do portraits,weddings and want to get 1 lens (low budget $1000) for now what would you recommend? I had the Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T E 16-70mm F4 ZA OSS Lens on my mind.

    - Was the Rotolight used on full power?
    - Would appreciate if you added exposure settings for each photo.
    Thanks for the video.

      +Njord77777 Yes the Neo was used on full power during the shoot. The only setting I changed was the color temp as the lighting conditions changed from daylight to night. Are you looking for Exif Data?

    • @Udrys999
      @Udrys999 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Well, full exif is unnecessary, only exposure time, aperture and ISO, so to judge Neo's light output.

    Hi David, captivating video. i'm a beginner trying to take my photography to a higher level. i just purchased the A6300. i have enough money to buy 1 2000 dollar lens and LOVE portrait photos like yours... Your work is BEAUTIFUL!! if you had one lens to get with that camera for portraits what would you suggest. ? thank you SO much and thanks for the work and teaching us... priceless.
    Holli

      holliwood97 Thank you Holli. I am glad you enjoyed the video! If I was to recommend 1 lens to start out for portraits it would be the 70-200 2.8. You will find that it will cover most everything. I have switched to all primes and Zeiss lenses for most of my work. As you progress in the craft you will find that investing in good glass is worth it. Camera bodies and models change fast. Happy shooting!

      Might I also recommend the 85, Gmaster 1.4, it's crazy sharp even at 1.4.

      I use the A7ii. this lighting kit looks like it could meet my needs. I sold my previous light kit cause I was tired of having to sync everything up and take so many practice shots, it was taking all the spontaneity out of the process for me. I shoot with really low aperture lenses anyways, Zeiss-Opton Sonnar 50mm f1.5, and a Pentax 135mm f2.8... this approach looks like its way more geared towards people who want to use natural lighting.

    David, was your aperture wide open for the most part?

    Who makes the pole that the Roto light is attached to.

    • @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC
      @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Hudek It is a monopod from Sony. Any cheap one will work for the Neo. It is very light weight.

    I would be interested to find out what sort of settings the Rotolight allowed you to shoot at . How far are you having to push the ISO ? Trying to establish just how bright the light is compared to using a speedlight !

    • @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC
      @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adrien McGuire The neo or any LED for that matter does not have the same power. The benefit is in low light situations. You can balance with ambient light for more effect and depth.

    Great shots indeed, very inspiring.
    One small criticism; on the phone shots (when pretending talking) the screen of the phone should be off.
    It's a small detail but somehow pokes my eye on most of the movies, tv series, photographs..

    What type of hand held boom was your assistant using to hold the Rotolight?

    • @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC
      @DavidLaRochellePhotographyTLC  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve Cook I had an old monopod that was not being used. I bought cheep and did not trust my camera on it. Works well with the Neo's light weight.

    Shoot using a reflector, not the Rotolight Neo.
