When you ran out of rink I laughed . . . at myself! I was practicing backwards skating for the first time at a rink yesterday on their practice floor, and was unfamiliar with the area. I heard you saying to keep my head up and eyes forward (from you backwards basic video--I had not yet watched this one), and I skated smack into a wall, and landed on my tailbone. Let me tell you, when a 60-something grandmother lands on her butt the first 5 minutes in a rink, every skate guard comes to check on you! I brushed myself off, skated for another 2.5 hours (without falling, and cognizant of my surroundings). Lesson learned! Thank you for your great videos and for being human in them!
I'm a beginner roller skater at 46 & I think Deborah's tutorials are simply fantastic. What a great instructor! Also, the camera person is really incredible! Super smooth, they know just when to move and when to stop, and they keep everything in frame that needs to be in frame. Kudos!
Yay you're a year older than me. I feel like a beginner. Coming back to roller skating in over 30+ years. But, I have a huge background in ice skating. I've been off the ice now for about 5 or 10 years. I lost count. I'm just glad that I can roller skate outdoors, and it doesn't have to be in a rink. However, I do want to get back to a rink soon, cause I have some indoor and phenolic wheels I want to try.
I’ve learned basically everything I know about skating from you, Deb! You’re my favorite person on the internet! All my friends are getting into skating with me, and we all love getting together and watching your videos to practice. What you’ve done with this channel has meant so much to me, especially during the pandemic as I learn how to skate for the first time in my life as a 27yo. Thank you thank you thank you. 😍 You’re seriously the best and I can’t wait to take a pilgrimage to your skate center to take a class.
Skating has made a great comeback from the 80s. Its a great fun cardio workout.....good for the heart & all of the body muscles. Its equivalent to jogging in terms of losing body fat calorie consumption, and health benefits. I'm a little rusty but I will be practicing my bubbles. Great tutorial 👍
Lol... definitely music, if not a friend helped me to get my grove back. I came in last night, after roller skating around the block to Mariah. I told my wife, "Stella here, just got his grove back." My wife cracked up, saying that's talking about something else, you know? I said, I know, but I was just happy to have my confidence and sure footing, while skating, that I haven't felt since leaving the ice rink. It's the piece I've been missing, as I'm not at any rink right now, where I can listen to music. You don't realize the power music has, when it comes to skating. If I don't have music to skate to, I'm almost more often than not, afraid to take a jump. However, when I have rythm... that's it, it gives me rythm. So when I hear/feel a piece of music... I feel more safe to make a jump or move that I wouldn't do otherwise. I do skate with my son, but it's definitely not like skating with a friend of the same level. Like if he were to dare me to do something. I think I'd just laugh. I don't feel pushed to prove myself. Where if it were a friend... then I'd feel pushed. Like Dirty says here, you would be able to do more if there was a friend. Kind of like having a personal coach. So, if ya don't have a person, then definitely start playing music... being a musician, I easily get lost in the music. I don't care what people think of me then. I can't hear what they're saying, so I don't lose my self confidence to their negativity.
THANK YOU!!! Before watching your video, all I could do was an awkward backwards bubble. The tip about how to come up from it really helps. The best part is the match and roll tips! I had not been shifting my weight, so when I tried to skate backward, I didn't go anywhere! That and the "efficient" tip about bending your knees made it work worlds better! I had pretty much given up on being able to skate backward, so it was so exciting when I was able to do it. You're awesome!
It worked!!! Althought the rink was PACKED I was able to practice theese techniques and my backwards skating is getting better. I naturally started doing things with my feet after going over and over and over and over it. Love this!!! I'm becoming more and more addicted.
I am struggling with nerves while learning backwards skating. So hard for my 45 year old ass. So today when I got nervous, I popped your video on as hearing you teach makes me feel less nervous. Thank you.
Picked up skates again at 44 and am addicted. Your tutorials are my fav. It’s really helpful when you explain where pressure is IN the skate, edges, etc. Thanks for that level of detail!
Oh i can't wait for my first skates to arrive. Watching your videos and love your energy 😍 looking forward to learn how to skate togheter with my little girl
After so many yrs I came back to skating. I love all your videos. You give me so much convince to be on my skates again. I’m practicing at home first with your videos. To get in the grove again. 😂
Dirty! Thank you for this. I never really learned to backwards skate as a kid - just made it up as I went along. And while it kinda worked (I'm going backwards, yay!) it relied a lot on just my right leg to do the work. This will help me even it all out. Thanks and Roll On!
Same here! I taught myself by watching others at the rink and that was circa 1972-73' and then I transferred the self-taught roller skating to the ice. It's so cool to learn the basic technique. I got back on wheels a month ago. Almost like starting from scratch.
I can definitely tell you are a true instructor. I was self taught 50 years ago and this is the first time I've had actual technique in backward skating. The hardest part for me is the pigeon-toed stance. I'm learning the bubble thing but not good yet. This is going to take practice to get comfortable and graceful.
This video just came at the right time. :) got my skates and tried them the first time yesterday. It is so awesome! So now I can try going backwards with your help. Thank you, your videos are awesome and they helped me a lot in advance already.

Hello!!! I’ve been watching this channel for about a month, and am kinda new to skating. I must say, your steps make skating come more naturally. I watched this video last night and practiced for a lil bit today, and was able to skate backwards!!!! Not perfectly, but much better than if I attempted without watching her tutorials first! An absolute God send, and amazing teacher. Gonna keep practicing forwards and backwards, along with the warm ups. And though it’s another video, the bubbles, scissors, etc make everything else go smoothly. Keep doing your thing love, and thank you sooo much ❤️ and can’t wait to learn some tricks lol
I live an hour from the nearest rink, but my new skates come Thursday (happy mother's day to me). I bought good outdoor wheels and I've watched a ton of your videos. I'm about 2.5 hours from Fountain Valley and the next time I get to Orange County I hope to make it in to say thank you in person for all your videos! I know I'll need lots of practice, but I'm way more confident that I can do this. Thanks again!
I loooooove your videos!!! So helpful!!!! First time skating in 20+ years, never been able to skate backwards, and did it on my first try after watching you. Thanks Deb!!!!!!
Thanks for this. I have just started skating again after years of not having skates. I never learned to backwards skate. Until today!! little problem at first; took a break skated forward for a while, tried again. About the 3rd try I started going backwards. Within minutes I was moving fairly well. I will practice for a week or so and be back for next video. Thank you!!
