    Great video. I see you lubed your pins with red grease. You should use silicon base grease/paste. Not because its a better lubrication but because it doesnt degrade those new rubber boots and seals you just put on. Petroleum base grease degrades rubber and fast. That happens you introduce dirt to the system and you can figure the rest out. Hope this helps for future brake jobs to you and anyone who reads comments to learn like i do.

    • @bgarcia856
      @bgarcia856 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yogovec probably Lucas Red and tacky. Great grease just not on rubber. Ball joint rubbers arent really rubber they are polyurethane so its good there.

    As a novice, do you have to change the bearrings? Or could you just use the old ones after the new rotors are on

    • @HandymanSam
      @HandymanSam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your old bearings look to be in good shape, then yes, you can use the old bearings. But make sure to replace all the old grease inside the bearings with new grease. That way, your old bearings will last longer.

    For the Dodge Ram, the best solution to support a caliper is to put an upside down 5 gallon bucket behind the wheel and simply put the caliper on it.

      I got pretty much everything from Autozone. I'm sure I could've gotten the parts cheaper online, but I didn't have time for it to ship, and Autozone was fairly close to my house.

    W did it sound like it was rubbing when you turned the rotor is that normal? Will it go away after driving fora few miles?

    • @HandymanSam
      @HandymanSam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sound is the brake pads slightly rubbing against the rotor, which is normal. Brakes pads usually have enough contact with the rotor to keep debris from getting in between, as well as loose enough for the wheel to spin semi-freely.

    What size is the allen key? I heard you say 3/8, but is that the socket fitting or the allen key side?

      @HandymanSam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Allen key

    • @HandymanSam
      @HandymanSam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a special Allen key built into a socket, that way you can use a ratchet with it for more leverage.

    I keep spinning the rotor as I'm torqueing down the spindle nut, I just spin the rotor till I feel a fair bit of resistance. Then slowly back off the nut till it spins freely and no sign of play, at the rotor. Not wanting to come across as a smart ass. If you cant get the cotter pin through the castle nut, loosen the nut to the next indent, don't tighten it to the next position. Obviously you don't want a floppy rotor, but too tight, will burn up the bearings.

      I am not a mechanic either. But I am going to college for a major in automotive engineering. I figure making these videos helps out a few people with questions, as well as helps me better understand vehicle maintenance. So far I haven't had a whole lot of hands on experience in college.

      Yeah, a bit steep, however the extra cost is worth the convenience, no separate wheel hub, race already in for the inner bearing, and new lugs if for some reason the ones beforehand had thread issues or dented or something. Edit: idk why I said new lugs, there are no new lugs, my b

    What do you meAn let the break system breath!! That's the last thing you want in the break system AIR!. . . please don't misinformed people.

    • @HandymanSam
      @HandymanSam  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not misinforming people. In order to compress the pistons for new brake pads, you have to allow some way for any fluid/air displacement to occur, or else you’ll never be able to get new pads in. This was the reason for taking the reservoir cap off- to let the system breath/release pressure.

    Should add silicone paste to the guide pins that is the cause of uneven wear on the brake pads, not enough lubrication.

      Sorry you’re having trouble, but yes- this is what a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 looks like with independent front suspension. I stated this at the very beginning of the video. Your suspension may look different, as there is an option for link/coil suspension on some Dodge Rams.
