    Thanks for the earplug tip! I've been struggling with how to hold on to red-hot 20cm bits of tubing, and - no word of a lie - have an industrial-sized quantity of earplugs in my bathroom cabinet...

    How long do you anneal that and at what temp?

    • @FusingShop
      @FusingShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First I need to say that there are many different opinions on annealing. I anneal at 1050 F for one hour per 1/4 inch of glass thickness. Since this pipe is pretty small, I anneal it for only one hour. Then you need to drop the kiln down to strain point of borosilicate which is about 950 degrees F. Your kiln has to hold the 950 degrees for the same amount as you annealed so an hour in this case. Hope this helps.

      @@FusingShopif I'm using 10 or 12 mm and 1.5 or 2mm wall to blow pipes do I need to anneal?

    • @FusingShop
      @FusingShop  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@zm4341 Hi! I always recommend annealing if it's for smoking. Worst thing that can happen is you shock the glass and it cracks, but it's not so common with that size tubing. All the best! Sim

      Make sure not to heat too much. You just need enough heat in the glass to make it move.

      There are different opinions on annealing time. I anneal at 1050F for an hour per 1/4 inch of glass. So if you have a 1/2 inch marble, I would anneal at 1050 for 2 hours and then drop the kiln to 850 and anneal another 2 hours. Hope this helps! Sim

    How can u tell when to stop expanding the bubble if you’re using small tubing like 8mm

    • @FusingShop
      @FusingShop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Likely! It depends on it you gathers glass or if you just blew out the tube. It also depends on the wall thickness of the glass. If a bubble looks too thin than stop blowing immediately because it can pop and make bubble trash. All the best! Sim

    • @LikelyLagging
      @LikelyLagging ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FusingShop so the amount gathered on the end is basically mainly what stretches outward. Minutes the area towards the stem.? I believe it’s 8mmx
      1.5 mm tubing. I gathered probably a little less than 1/4 inch before blowing. Got it to the size of a marble maybe a little bigger before stopping. Scared it was getting too thin.
      Also 1st fucking brilliant idea using the hose for blowing… I put my tube in a drill with a map gas hot head torch and just rotated it with the drill and periodically pulled it out as fast as I could to start blowing the bubble. Took about 10 heatings lol map gas sucks 😭
      2nd fucking awesome of you to actually reply! I appreciate it greatly. I’m really considering getting into the hobby and possibly business. It intrigues the tinkerer and the artist in me lol

      @@LikelyLagging Hello! There is no formula to blowing glass bubbles. It takes a bunch of practice to see how far you can expand the glass and still keep a nice even wall thickness. A map torch will work for smaller tubing but you really need a propane/oxygen torch to get the party started. All the best! Sim

    what causes a round hole to develop after only a few uses? I'm going on pipe number 3 now. They are the cheap mass produced oil diffuser type. The seller offers only 10% off the next purchase. I used the first one 1 time only. The second one, after the first use a round hole again.

    • @FusingShop
      @FusingShop  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Jay! I'm not sure what you mean. A hole should not develop in the glass. I have pipes that are years old that are the same as when I made them. All the best! Sim

    Can a pipe with stress cracks be fixed?

    • @FusingShop
      @FusingShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, cracks can be healed. You need to use an annealing flame and use the end of the flame to "lick" the cracks and they should start to heal.

    How can I make a hole in the bowl?

    • @FusingShop
      @FusingShop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Heyyyyyyy. You pop the hole with using a small flame and blowing a "blister." Then put the tip of the blister in the flame and blow. The glass should pop open giving you a sweet hole for that bowl.
