I heard this piece performed innumerable times as a youth participating in the Junior Bach festival in Berkeley. With soprano and two flutes or recorders playing the treble voices, a cello and piano. I hear Fleisher and all those glorious voices come back, but it’s out of one instrument. Different cvolumes, different colors, different timbres all under control. Amazing performance.
I find myself playing this often. It is so beautiful. I want to thank everyone from Bach to Fischer to Klever34. So many wonderful things happen for our benefit in life often without our doing anything. I am very grateful.
seeing him being able to play the piano again after 30 years of forced hiatus brings tears to my eyes. The desire and longing in his playing shows how much he enjoys it
Simply sublime. This piece was composed over 3 centuries ago, but it will surely be played in a thousand years from now. J. S. Bach's music is timeless.
I, minor pianist and teacher, had a brest cancer surgery a few month ago and now on chemo. Prof. Fleisher's pure sound gives me encouragement to be back on the stage, again. Hope he rests peacefully in the heaven just like his sound making.
To hear that you desire performing again is wonderful! I really hope your treatment is well-tolerated and utterly effective, and that you do return to the piano and the repertoire that brings so much happiness to the world. Bach needs you, and so do we.
Grazie, Maestro.
i had the priviledge yesterday to hear this piece in full arangement with two flutes, lute, cello, organ and soprano, i am in love. truly, in love.. such beauty.
I have heard Fleisher playing this wonderful transcription in a concert in Toulouse (France) during the festival "Piano aux Jacobins" : it was one of the most extraordinary musical moments in my entire life !
The climax at 03:21 omg!!! 😭😭😭 Prof. Fleisher’s face says it all ❤ There is another equally wonderful interpretation of this piece by Fleisher, with a slighter faster tempo, but this one… This one is eternal. He was making peace with his Maker ❤
from pg 300 of Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks: At the end of our visit, Fleisher agreed to play something on my piano... he played a piano transcription of Bach's "Sheep May Safely Graze," as arranged for piano by Egon Petri. Never in its 112 years, I thought, had this piano been played by such a master... Fleisher seemed to distill the beauty, drop by drop, like an alchemist, into flowing notes of an almost unbearable beauty - and, after this, there was nothing more to be said.
And, I can only believe that 300 years from now, if we're still around (?), this will still be enjoyed and very much appreciated, in some form or another. It is timeless.
@@magusl9628 In movie-industry you can find great composers. Listen to the soundtrack of LOTR for example. But yeah, not for the purpose of enlighten the heart. True.
@@maranatha_777 I know what you mean. I like John Williams for instance, not a big fan of the music of LOTR. Still, can't be compared to Bach... it's great music, but Bach and all the legendary composers are on a completely different level.
still in my ear the Matthay students and couple, Ethel Bartlett and Rae Robertson playing this lovely Bach work in their two piano recital in Town Hall...1955??! and lovely to hear Leon Fleisher , too, of course!
Especially on this day of madness, this comes as balm, and the words never felt more appropriate. Wo Regenten wohl regieren, Kann man Ruh und Friede spüren Und was Länder glücklich macht. Translation by Pam Dellal: Sheep can graze securely where a good shepherd watches. Where rulers govern well quiet and peace can be experienced and all that makes countries happy.
+Scott Holzknecht In 1964, Fleisher lost the use of his right hand, due to a condition that was eventually diagnosed as focal dystonia. In the 1990s, Fleisher was able to ameliorate his focal dystonia symptoms after experimental botox injections to the point where he could play with both hands again.
Thank you Jesus. The Lord is our shepherd and we are His sheep. I love Fleisher's version the best. I feel like he is a Christian, if not, I hope he comes to the Lord our saviour.
This is not about Jesus. This is about good princes (Regenten), who, by their judicious administration (Regierung) make sure that we can enjoy peace and tranquility, that we may "safely graze".
Sorry, I can't seem to copy the passage. Mr. Fleisher acquired focal dystonia in his right hand in the 1960s. His ability to use his right hand again in major literature is nothing short of miraculous.
Wunderbar.
Rest in peace, dear maestro.

I remember you again..😩
You once told me, "you would love everyone on this planet to hear this at least once in their lifetime"
what a lovely thing to say
Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it... reminds me of the Good Shepherd... God Bless Leon Fleisher!

Such stunning simplicity, subtlety and beauty. Mr Fleisher is a treasure.

It is like every single note is play with such perfection, serenity. When it comes to playing Bach, Fleisher is one of my favorites.

Yes. I cried when I heard Leon Fleisher playing it in Luzern, in 2008. Wonderful!
How one can envy you. This can make me teary eyed just by hearing it on my cellphone. I can only imagine your experience. 🙏 ❣
Sublime. Every note is heard with clarity and sings to its fullest tone, it's magical.

Sehr schöne Interpretation. Danke dafür.
Absolutely incredible. Best version ever heard. Mr. Bach himself could not play this piece any better.
I must learn how to play this piece. This is such a perfect piece for any funeral. I love the melody and the meaning.
What a perfectly beautiful, perfectly subtle yet complex ... discussion - Leon Fleisher, the master!
Stunningly beautiful. Thank you J.S. Bach and Mr. Leon Fleisher. Soli Deo Gloria
He played this one as encore this Monday, what a enchanted moment~
Wonderful, we had this played at my mother's funeral. I love it.

Thanks for post this beautiful play, it's moving and peaceful.
Pure bliss. wonderful performance
I can barely believe this was written more than 300 years ago.
I can, they don't make music like this anymore! Although, technically, this is a transcription, so it wasn't writen like this, but close enough.

Wow! Simply beautiful and perfect!

I love this...doesn't need pictures or a running video.
one word. beautiful
Thank you Varvara I loved the tempo you chose to play this Aria at, it emphasised the harmony and elegance of the piece. Nicely done.
Thank you for uploading, I have loved this interpretation for a long time.
Yes, this is well done. Straightforward in a good way.
Best version !!

Gracias.
Fleisher has long done wonderful things w/ this piece. Whatever the opposite of "empty virtuosity" is, it's found here.
beautiful
Played perfectly at the correct tempo......couldnt have done better myself sir?

Does his musical sensitivity reveal a maturity of age and experience with adversity?
But can Sheep really Graze Safely with a Leon out there on the prowl?
😊
Indeed, Leon loved his lamb chops.
