    I've owned my XKR since December last year and it has been an phenomenal car to own. Didn't start off like that though as when I was driving it back home and decided to give it some beans it took a poop and misfired on 3 of the 8 cylinders. Managed to limp her home without doing any damage to the engine and started beginning the work the next day.
    After taking the spark plugs out oil was seeping into 3,5 and 7 cylinder which would explain the misfiring. After removing both of the valve covers I'd seen how worn the rubber gaskets and o-rings for the spark plugs. So I bought the full kit from Berkshire Jaguar which has OEM parts for Jaguars alike.
    Also mine is a 2001 model which still had the plastic secondary timing tensioners and noticed both had cracked; for first time buyers make sure this job has been done or this could lead to catastrophic engine failure if the secondary timing chains decide to hop to the next gear. Not good at all!
    Bought a couple new secondary tensioners from eBay a left bank and right and replaced them myself. There are tutorials for this but highly recommend getting a torque wrench if you're hands on with the mechanics, it's not the hardest job in the world but you need to be precise.
    Check for suspension components as these x100 are prone to rust issues. I had a terrible time with the suspension top mounts and lower bushing as the lower bushing had fully seized into the shock absorber. After a painstakingly 7 hours I'd managed to get the f'r out. So that was hardship ngl but both sides are good but highly recommend getting done by a professional if it's in a bad or worse condition than mine was.
    As ownership and living with my XKR as a daily driver I love it. It's everything plowed into many devine concepts from driving down b roads hearing the supercharger and crisp V8 working in harmony to it's beautiful shape and eye-catching looks. There's not a lot of cars out there where true value for money exist but for this one it does.
    If you're worried about fuel the XKR isn't for you go with an XK8 or either if has been professionally converted to run on gas too. Check the usual rust, any bubbling or blistered on paint could lead to a couple of grand down the line if needing body work (most of them will). Like HSG has said check for mileage service history and general condition of the car.
    I got lucky and paid £6300 for mine £650 in cost for parts and my own labour. £2400 in upgrades so far and it has been great car and super reliable after my repairs and work that has been done.
    So if you're considering the x100 or x150 both are great cars and exceptional value for money (can't express that enough) take them both for a test drive and the one you like the most that's the one you should go for. You can't lose in either of these big cats.

    Absolutely right mate, you described me to a tee! I got a '02 4.2 litre xkr in November. In the warmer weather She's an absolute joy to drive.
    She's no need to hurry, but I'm confident my friend will struggle to keep up with me on his 1200cc Triumph Blackbird.
    We'll film that experiment, soon enough.

    I have owned my 1996 XK8 for 23 years. It’s done 48,000 miles trouble free and I am reluctantly thinking of selling her as I just don’t use it much. I have never owned a car that has given me so much pleasure both to look at and to drive. A true classic.

    14 years ago my last XK8 went. Had a few XJ, XJR and Range Rover V8 since then. Couldn't decide on another XK8, XK or another XJ/R. Only knew that I wanted to go back to the make that has always left a smile and that was Jaguar. First Jaguar owned was XJR-S number 001, absolutely stunning. Stumbled across your videos and Affordable Prestige. Just today, taken delivery of a beautiful shade of silver XK8 4.2S final edition white badge. Delivered all the way up to Grimsby from Affordable Prestige. Decided on XK8 because I hate the cockpit on the XK and don't need an XJ for the dog as I have a van. They owe you a cup of tea!!

    I have a 1997 4lt XK8 Auto. I agree with you very smooth more a cruiser rather than a racer, but the ride is smooth and very comfortable. Mine has now done 88,000 showing 83,000 when I bought it. Had some rust issues around the wheel arches and the floor pans had been replaced, but a strong smooth engine. I love it! I have a Mercedes SLK 230 Kompressor to play with if I want excitement!

    The 4.2 engine is known to be the most reliable out of the AJV8 engines. The transmission int he 4.2 and the XKR is also more reliable with the 6 speed ZF unit. 6HP26. Some of the earlier transmissions have some problems and can fail very early. The CATS suspension improves the handling a lot so you can just get a CATS equiped car if you want it to handle better.

    I have both the XK8 X100 4.0 and the XKR 5.0 with 510 HP. The X100 gives you the complete Feeling of a Vintage Classic Car with modern Features and extrem easy to handle. The X150 as the XKR 5.0 is a modern Bargain Supercar with a lot of Elegance. Both Cars have a complete different Charme. The Blood Line Signature from the X100 is much more Elegant than the X150. This Line is very Similar to the Ferrari 365 (Queen Mary)

    It’s spot on, your comment about the new speculative owners wanting a Mazda, S2000 or XK. I owned a 97’ TT Toyota Supra for about 10 years and a 97’ Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. Now I have my 01’ Jag XK8 and I love it!

    Nice video on xk8, I wasn’t really looking for a Jag I had 4K to spend on a sports car but felt I needed seats in the back for the dogs I got the xk cheap but have since replaced tensioners, gearbox, and new tyres, there’s a good network of specialists out there parts are not to expensive I’ve fell in love with the xk8 in my opinion one of the most beautiful cars on the road

      @@gerardbooth40 Hi Gerard I do feel now mechanicals are more sorted I have no problem taking xk8 on long road trips, and not too bad on fuel on long runs
      I think anyone going for a test drive should put gearbox through its paces changing gears through the 2,3,4 manually try and trigger the fault code
      I didn’t 😀 and couldn’t get reverse at the petrol station on the way back home from buying the car
      But it did get me home 100miles later just kept rebooting the ecu
      Second hand gearbox £1000 fitted
      Runs great now

    This car can go fast - if you step on it - but it is really very close to the xj8 of the early 2000s: super-comfy and good for hours of relaxed driving. It has the old style “sliding through the landscape” feel of older Jaguars and we really like it for that. Is it a thrill drive? Absolutely not - but it is astonishing “confident” and still quick enough. If you like a screaming V8 sound…switch to the “manual” mode of the gearbox and wake up the neighborhood. Great car which will stay with us until it falls apart….

    This is the twin of mine colour and interior wise. I have one of the last 2002 4.0 XKR models. I prefer the looks of the older model. As always look everywhere for rust! That one looks in very nice condition. They are getting to the age now where the owners have had to sort the known issues to keep them running.

    I've had a 4.0 XK8 and currently have a 4.2 XKR and both are GT cars for me. I can't help but wonder if the difference you describe was caused by the driving style of the owners. The TCM Adaptive Leaning will adapt the gearbox and changes to their driving styles. Definitely not a sports car though, either of them. I also have an 3.0S F-Type and one drive in that further defines the X100 as a GT.

      As long as the condition shows that it’s been loved and it has a good history behind it, 100K is really no issue. My 2007 shape had 95k and served me well overall. They can always have their gremlins but a look over will tell a lot about it’s owners and their level of care

    It's always tough comparing 20 year old cars - the condition of these cars just isn't going to be consistent from vehicle to vehicle. I have owned an '01 with the 4.0 and currently own a '06 with the 4.2. My experience is just the opposite of yours. I find the '06 to be smoother and enough more powerful pulling up hills to be noticeable. The '06 was a real upgrade from the '01. What I don't know is whether that's because the '06 has simply been better maintained. However, the '06 does have more miles on it than the '01 did.

    • @HSGAutomotive

      Yeah I think these X100's tend to age harder when not treated well, whereas the X150's seem to be able to take more abuse and keep going

  • @pubu2010

    Very odd to compare a Jaguar Grand Tourer to a Honda or a Mazda. Most feel that this shape is the most similar/reminiscent of the XKE. Later models drifted away from that shape. Its rivals are usually always listed as high end luxury cars not Hondas.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      - Which is why I very specifically said now, not when it was released. Because today, there are no GT's which this can compete with, used or otherwise. Categorizing it among sub-10k sports cars is flattering for the XK8.

      For context, when I was looking for a fun, enjoyable and characterful future classic for weekend drives, the S2000 was also on my list for consideration along with various Alfas and even the Fiat coupe. In the end the XK8 won out and I’ve no regrets whatsoever.

    Good review.
    I have owned many XKs and XKRs over the last 6 years and have stuck with X100 and X150 Rs. My first was a 1998 4 litre XK8, which, to be honest, I did t keep very long as I felt I had to push it along to get acceptable performance from it. I am not a racer behind the wheel but compared to my STR which I owned at the time, the XK8 felt sluggish.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @stagnite2
      @stagnite2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion, of the X150’s, the 4.2 XKR is a better car than the 5.0 because:
      It has a softer ride
      It has a quieter exhaust
      It has a gear lever to rest a hand on
      It has a dipstick
      It has a quieter engine
      It is not mapped to encourage speed
      It is more respectful of my driving licence
      It is fast enough for our crowded British roads.
      It can be left in Neutral with ignition and park brake off
      It is better value for money
      I ran two 5 litres and my present 4.2 for 4 years now.

    0-60 in 6.5 seconds not that quick! Are you for real? Yeah a VW GTI will spank it now, but not in 1997. Its still quicker than most cars on the road today.

    • @HSGAutomotive
      @HSGAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Precisely - we don't live in 1997. So it should be addressed as such. More importantly however, there is more than one way to feel fast. The 6 cylinder DB7 which I reviewed recently for example also hits 60 in about the same time, but feels far perkier in doing so. Going fast and feeling fast are two entirely different things, and in that sense, the XK8 feels its age more than some other cars of its time which I've driven.

    • @tevie54
      @tevie54 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent video but I have to disagree about the performance, 0 to 60 in six and a half seconds is still a respectable figure, 155 mph is a crazy speed, how many people have actually done 155 on the public highway, what other car will give you this performance for this money and look this good
