Thanks for this review, I had a 4.2 XKR and now have the 5.0L XK 2010 model and I have to agree that it is fantastic. I really thought it would feel like a poor second to the XKR but it is actually much more refined and beautiful. The twin oval tail pipes look subtle and classy and the noise is great but not too loud. I use it every day and it is very practical, much more than you would expect. I really do think the XK 5.0L is the pick of the range. Very comfortable but still plenty fast.
I have had both a 5.0 XKR and a 5.0 XK (which is my current car). I completely agree with your comments. The XKR, fun though it undoubtedly is when you are in the mood, is just a bit too much for everyday driving. It is hard to drive smoothly such is the throttle response and It is very easy to spin the wheels when turning at a right angle junction. The sound it makes though is fantastic. Whereas the XK has all the power you would ever need, is still very responsive and is just that bit easier to live with. Both are lovely cars but in my view the XK is the better choice.
I’ve had the 2014 XK in metallic BRG for 2 years and love it. Window sticks a bit on opening the door, and frosty mornings are fun getting in. Yes, it’s my daily driver 😮
I've just bought this exact car by chance. I see it advertised on auto trader and came to look at your video to see your opinion on the xk 5ltr. As the video rolled and you started to explain about the heritage model I was thinking that's a lot like the car I'm looking at? Did a history check and bam it's the same car but with a different private plate 😮😂
I have owned every XK coupe and some convertibles, except the 5L XKR. Currently driving a 4.2 XKR which is probably my favourite alongside the regular 4.2, which I humbly consider was the most usable, power wise. Love your reviews, look forward to more.

I bought my wife for Xmas a 2003 XK 4.2 Convertible in December of 2005 (1st year of the 4.2, at least in the USA). She loves it and still drives it every day during the non-Winter months, here in Michigan. It currently has 79,401 miles. I bought her a 2014 XK Coupe 5.0, for Xmas back in 2017. She says it's a much prettier car (I agree), and we both really like the 385HP -- this car is totally different from the "boulevard cruiser" XK8 Convertible). The 2014 XK has about 29K miles. We are in love with both of these cars, but for different reasons. The 5.0 is a "muscle car" compared to the old 4.2 (which has probably lost a few HP over the pat few years). I still regret selling my 1989 V12 XJS Rouge Edition Coupe in Bright Red. My Jag mechanic has a 1989 XJS Convertible V12 with a Champagne exterior and a beautiful tan interior -- he wants my wife's 2003 4.2 V8 XK8 Convertible, if we ever decide to sell it.

Thanks for the video. I had a choice and opted for a 2012 5.0L Convertible with the facelift (tiny crystal 'leapers' in the headlights!). It's simply a nicer car to drive than the 'R' - more relaxed and powerful enough. However, I've had mine 'super-chipped' which has improved the driving experience by lowering the torque curve and providing more mid-range power. This, with a Larini exhaust is the perfect balance, for me. BTW - I had the tyre sensors removed and fitted Michelin Pilot Sports (huge upgrade over Pirellis or Dunlops)
Just sold my BMW640 m sport for this Jaguar XK 5.0 2011 with 28000 on the clock with one previous owner, I did have a Jaguar XKR before the BMW and was missing my Jaguar so i couldn't resist buying this Jaguar XK 5.0, I love it.
I just bought a 2013 XK 5.0 U.S. version. Yes, it has a TPS light lol. I can fix it but I ran it to 120 mph yesterday and my god, deadly fast and tight on I95 in Florida. Early morning, clear and warm. The steering is deadly accurate lol. I had it in checkered flag mode what ever that means. Just Bought it so still learning this Exotic. Cheers, Mate from Florida.
I have reviewed all of your videos at least twice, thanks for the passion, thoroughness and editing that’s gone into your coverage. In the US, models can be spotty. Fortunately I found a 2014 white XK Cabrio from the authorized jaguar dealership in Knoxville Tn. The experience was great and I highly recommend purchasing this model. It’s great to look at and performance is all that I need for the twisties in East Tenneessee. Cheers for the awesome reviews it’s what convinced me to purchase and of course I had them address all the for-mentioned gremlins!
Stick it in Sport and you are going to ease up well before the car wants to..24 to 25 mpg is what I get from mine on mixed driving and I went for the normally aspirated 5.0 portfolio convertible as I just didn’t see the need for the supercharged variant.... great car 👍
Great comments. The XK5.0 base is very rewarding on every level, driver feel, engine response, sounds and chassis are perfectly judged so Jaguar engineering is tremendous in this version. It’s only the control panel that is a bit poor but even then only a bit
Currently own a 2013 5.0 Portfolio. I specifically didn't want the XKR as I'm not a fan of the tailpipes, bonnet vents etc... Plus I have driven an X351 with 550bhp and it's borderline unusable. Only issue I have had beyond routine maintenance and consumable parts, is the heat shield for the rear silencer had to be replaced as the mounting points gave way. In particular I like the 5.0 n/a exhaust... It's semi active, quiet at part throttle, but loud at full hammer.
Late to this video, but another 5.0 2011 base XK owner here. Another point about the base models is that it does not have all of the aero bits added to the XKR* models. For me, the aggressive side skirts, big spoilers etc while functional, take away from the graceful simple original design. I get about 25-26 mpg while keeping it locked to 65mph on the highway. My biggest expense was due to a stuck injector (replaced all 8) over 7 years of ownership.
I want to add a +1 to the thanks in the comments. With the planned ban on petrol powered vehicles in the EU I wanted to have owned a V8 in my life before I'm forced to go full electric. I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the XK, so I - naturally - wanted to opt for the big 5.0 XKR. After watching (and rewatching) your reviews on the Jags I have decided to give the NA 5.0 a chance. As good XK are extremely rare over here I took a road trip to the other end of the country to test drive a well kept 2013 model. And boy, was that the right decision. From the overall car "feel" to the way it drives it fits like a glove. Power delivery in the NA engine is just right, it's enough power but never felt overwhelming. I will collect the car on Saturday and it feels like I'm receiving an early Christmas gift to myself :)
@@steverabbits what a coincidence, mine is Lunar Grey as well! It's such an understated, yet classic colour. I love it! But I think power-wise I might have reached a phase where I wonder if I shouldn't have gone for the XKR instead. But seeing how the NA one is already very traction limited I'm not sure if I could even make any use of any more power ;)

Looking at your reviews, i bought a Runabout 4.2 base. Exhaust etc still sound amazing and 300 bhp is enough. I mean can't use the power more than my 30d x-drive. I sold the 4 because it's just a soulless car. The xk in all engine forms 300 bhp plus are plenty. You buy an xk for 2 reasons design and engine noise. Both aplenty in all.
I wish I could find an XJR (X308 or X350) or XKR (X150) in South Africa. They have been my dream 2 car garage (both in black). There are tons of the XJR 575 and even the XKR-S. While those are still amazing cars I would love to own and would easily choose over the BMW or Mercedes equivalents. Althought, I would definitely go for a e38 7 Series and Z8 twin-pack.
Just wanted to add my thoughts. Having owned a 5.0 litre NA since new, (lucky me) I picked the Signature 5.0 convwrtible. I can honestly say, i know i picked the best all rounder. Dont get me wrong, the XKR dynamic R gets me shivering. BUT... The noise off the XKR could really get on your nerves, i know how loud they are at normal use and to be fair i found when i test drove the XKR (More than once) i found the noise annoying after a bit. Dont mistake what im saying, the noise of a V8 at full chat is like no other noise in the world, however when starting your car at 6am to go off to work, i'd guess the neighbours would lynch you with the XKR. My car is bloody loud when started, but the XKR is even louder. You want to try creeping into a quiet cul-de-sac past midnight, thats when the racket of the XKR really becomes an embarrassment. Truthfully, i felt i needed to share my thoughts because your review is bang on. When i bought my car, i was swayed by main dealer that the 5.0 na was the best, an that the XKR was a handfull, even driven moderately. The difference in acceleration between the 2 cars is totally insignificant as mine will easily hit 100mph in just a tad over 10 seconds, why would you need to go faster. Put it this way, i have kept up with the XKR in my car, at the end of the day it has the same gear box so its not really going to drive a whole lot different. The main difference i find is driving the car comfortably, the 5.0 XKR accelerator is either on or off, it really is just too aggressive at times. Passengers tend to have their head thrown around in the sc car as the acceleration isnt that progressive. Dont be fooled, i have had my real wheels spin at over 90mph in 5th gear (autobahn) proper brown trouser moment. Brilliant car, ive done 85k in mine, only problem being the Battery, im on my 2nd, brakes, it loves chewing through rear pads, and yep like everyone else, water pump failed about 75k cost around £600 for main dealer to fix. If your considering one, dont worry about reliability, ive had Jaguars since 2010 and only ever done brakes, and the water pump. Absolutely perfect cars, there are some frustrating gremlins on the electrical side, but i find switching the car off, getting out, locking it, then open and start it usually fixes the issues. (Mainly being the audio system acts up) like sometimes it doesnt see the USB or the IPOD. But you get used to it
Thank you for another excellent review. This time, however, I am biased as I've had the pleasure of owning a Heritage Edition since (almost) new. The spec is identical to the one you drove including the gorgeous 'black cherry' paintwork. You're absolutely right - in real world conditions it isn't possible to use the additional performance of the XKR and the 5.0 XK is the more balanced, refined and rounded proposition. Even with 'just' 385bhp the aluminium construction means that the power-to-weight ratio is better than a 4.2l Aston Martin Vantage. Not bad for a base model ;-)

I own this exact same model from 2011, the heritage Edition or as it is called here in continental Europe, the „E50“. Now own it for about 5 years. Major issue was broken curve light, which required a new headlight assembly. Also new water pump. Otherwise no bigger issues at 40k mls in use as daily driver. Yes, it is not a practical car. But beautiful!
Thanks for the great review, really enjoyed it! I own a black XK 5.0 at the moment and absolutely love it! To me it feels very special and plenty fast, I couldn't see the point of buying a SC 5.0 Jaguar. I did consider and drive an XFR which felt incredible and ridiculously quick. But it was perhaps even too quick, as I couldn't even press the throttle half way without putting myself at risk! At the end, it is about balance of beauty, performance, comfort and everything else, and in that regard the XK 5.0 just seems unbeatable.
Well I liked your review, however i really love my 2011 XKR. For me it ticks all the boxes. Just had the gear box oil and filter changed as i felt at 70000 miles and no history of it being changed was a wise job to do. The oil wasn't too bad. Prevention is the word . Keep reviewing.
The 5.0 is also direct injection so you can get carbon buildup on the valve stems. Also the supercharger in the 4.2 makes more noise for the X100 so if you like supercharger whine get the 4.2R.
I am on my fourth XK this one is 2014 Convertible and this one I am keeping I cant find any other car with such value and compaired with others a lot cheaper to service and repair and i think the convertables will hold there price as there are so few in UK
Loved the review I own xk 4.2 n/a and have to agree it does feel that bit under power, as its my only car I accept that as n/a engine are more reliable than supercharged. My biggest disappointment was the engine sound couldn't hear the v8. 2nd day of ownership got rid of back box and straight piped and boy what a improvement sounds exactly how I wanted it a true British muscle car equivalent to ford mustang
Is it considered taboo to replace the front of the XK with that of the XKR? I don't want to try and pass it off as an XKR. I wouldn't even remove the XK badge. I just really prefer the look. And the same for the XJ X350. I hate the standard grille (akathe Clarkson ) and just think the mesh grille is how it is meant to look.
I have a 2012 Artisan Special, which I confirm has wonderful performance with the 385bhp 5.0 litre engine, coupled with highest level of interior trim. It certainly is a great gentleman's express tourer. I use it mostly for continental touring as the roads here in the South East are just too broken to want to drive it much in the UK.
Got hypnotised at .my dealer in West oz while sourcing bits for my s2 etype (also have an xjs) is phoenix red xkr .. only 37o hp ! Way more than I need really. Having 3 Jags you need the extra ones to have one driveable but still so what.?
Sorry but I have to disagree , I have the 5.0l (2009 portfolio convertible) & I use it as a daily drive & have done for the last 8yrs . Your right about the water pump had mine done under warranty it sprayed water & oil over the alternator had that replaced as well but every now & again look to see what's out there & the only car I would change it for is an xj pre 2009 it's that good .

? Q1 2010 5.0 motors with DFI are not more hassle than 4.2 for maintenance Q2 Are the moving interior parts such as rotary gear selector a notable maintenance risk? The 4.2 cars don’t seem to have any major deal killer problems
I owned one of these a few years ago. I must have just been unlucky it was very unreliable plagued with electrical problems and strangely in very cold weather the doors wouldn't catch shut. Just glad to get rid and went back to Porsche.
Electrical problems are almost always due to a low charge in the battery. Anyone buying a used XK/XKR should always have the battery replaced. Porsche are also very good cars but they are not Grand Tourers - as evidenced by the lack of luggage space and hard ride. A friend's 991 is also quite noisy at cruise speed, but he loves it.
It could have been a nice car if it wasn’t spoiled by a crappy injection/throttle. It’s like on/off switch. The car is jumpy in town, spins it’s wheels without any provocation when damp and cruising is not relaxing because you are constantly trying to balance throttle to keep constant speed. Grand Tourer? More like Grand Annoyer. I have had mine for 6 month and already looking to sell it. P. S. Oh, and don’t get me started on useless auto wipers🤯

Brilliant car, ive done 85k in mine, only problem being the Battery, im on my 2nd, brakes, it loves chewing through rear pads, and yep like everyone else, water pump failed about 75k cost around £600 for main dealer to fix.
If your considering one, dont worry about reliability, ive had Jaguars since 2010 and only ever done brakes, and the water pump. Absolutely perfect cars, there are some frustrating gremlins on the electrical side, but i find switching the car off, getting out, locking it, then open and start it usually fixes the issues. (Mainly being the audio system acts up) like sometimes it doesnt see the USB or the IPOD. But you get used to it
Thank you for another excellent review. This time, however, I am biased as I've had the pleasure of owning a Heritage Edition since (almost) new. The spec is identical to the one you drove including the gorgeous 'black cherry' paintwork. You're absolutely right - in real world conditions it isn't possible to use the additional performance of the XKR and the 5.0 XK is the more balanced, refined and rounded proposition. Even with 'just' 385bhp the aluminium construction means that the power-to-weight ratio is better than a 4.2l Aston Martin Vantage. Not bad for a base model ;-)

I own this exact same model from 2011, the heritage Edition or as it is called here in continental Europe, the „E50“. Now own it for about 5 years. Major issue was broken curve light, which required a new headlight assembly. Also new water pump. Otherwise no bigger issues at 40k mls in use as daily driver. Yes, it is not a practical car. But beautiful!
Thanks for the great review, really enjoyed it! I own a black XK 5.0 at the moment and absolutely love it! To me it feels very special and plenty fast, I couldn't see the point of buying a SC 5.0 Jaguar. I did consider and drive an XFR which felt incredible and ridiculously quick. But it was perhaps even too quick, as I couldn't even press the throttle half way without putting myself at risk! At the end, it is about balance of beauty, performance, comfort and everything else, and in that regard the XK 5.0 just seems unbeatable.

Well I liked your review, however i really love my 2011 XKR. For me it ticks all the boxes. Just had the gear box oil and filter changed as i felt at 70000 miles and no history of it being changed was a wise job to do. The oil wasn't too bad. Prevention is the word . Keep reviewing.

The 5.0 is also direct injection so you can get carbon buildup on the valve stems. Also the supercharger in the 4.2 makes more noise for the X100 so if you like supercharger whine get the 4.2R.
the 5.0 has a different gearbox as well compared to the 4.2. and a great review as usual!
I am on my fourth XK this one is 2014 Convertible and this one I am keeping I cant find any other car with such value and compaired with others a lot cheaper to service and repair and i think the convertables will hold there price as there are so few in UK
Loved the review I own xk 4.2 n/a and have to agree it does feel that bit under power, as its my only car I accept that as n/a engine are more reliable than supercharged. My biggest disappointment was the engine sound couldn't hear the v8. 2nd day of ownership got rid of back box and straight piped and boy what a improvement sounds exactly how I wanted it a true British muscle car equivalent to ford mustang

Is it considered taboo to replace the front of the XK with that of the XKR? I don't want to try and pass it off as an XKR. I wouldn't even remove the XK badge. I just really prefer the look.
And the same for the XJ X350. I hate the standard grille (akathe Clarkson ) and just think the mesh grille is how it is meant to look.
Love the 5.0 XK. Fail to see why anyone would pay the extra for the 'R' version as you really can't use the extra power...
Agreed. In 99% of real world situations, 385 bhp is enough
I have a 2012 Artisan Special, which I confirm has wonderful performance with the 385bhp 5.0 litre engine, coupled with highest level of interior trim. It certainly is a great gentleman's express tourer. I use it mostly for continental touring as the roads here in the South East are just too broken to want to drive it much in the UK.

Got hypnotised at .my dealer in West oz while sourcing bits for my s2 etype (also have an xjs) is phoenix red xkr .. only 37o hp ! Way more than I need really. Having 3 Jags you need the extra ones to have one driveable but still so what.?
Sorry but I have to disagree , I have the 5.0l (2009 portfolio convertible) & I use it as a daily drive & have done for the last 8yrs . Your right about the water pump had mine done under warranty it sprayed water & oil over the alternator had that replaced as well but every now & again look to see what's out there & the only car I would change it for is an xj pre 2009 it's that good .

? Q1 2010 5.0 motors with DFI are not more hassle than 4.2 for maintenance
Q2 Are the moving interior parts such as rotary gear selector a notable maintenance risk?

I owned one of these a few years ago. I must have just been unlucky it was very unreliable plagued with electrical problems and strangely in very cold weather the doors wouldn't catch shut. Just glad to get rid and went back to Porsche.
Electrical problems are almost always due to a low charge in the battery. Anyone buying a used XK/XKR should always have the battery replaced. Porsche are also very good cars but they are not Grand Tourers - as evidenced by the lack of luggage space and hard ride. A friend's 991 is also quite noisy at cruise speed, but he loves it.

It could have been a nice car if it wasn’t spoiled by a crappy injection/throttle. It’s like on/off switch. The car is jumpy in town, spins it’s wheels without any provocation when damp and cruising is not relaxing because you are constantly trying to balance throttle to keep constant speed.
Grand Tourer? More like Grand Annoyer.
I have had mine for 6 month and already looking to sell it.

Interesting, can't say I've heard anyone with that issue before, or in mine which I kept for 8 months. Maybe an issue with that particular car?
