Earl still could perform even at 85 years old. One of the greatest!
Rest in peace, Mr Scruggs. Few have had such an impact on music as this man.
86 years old and was still pickin' like nobody's business.
A living legend (at the time,) absolutely a Bluegrass genius of the highest order. Always imitated, never duplicated, Earl was da' man.
would. have loved to meet him
I was at that show. Glad I got to see Earl once in my life before he passed. One less thing on my bucket list.
I really wish I could have seen him perform. Earl was a phenomenal musician. Master of his craft. He made the banjo become a most coveted instrument. Only Earl could make it what it is today. Maybe if I am blessed, I will get to meet his spirit and sould in the afterlife. Another amazing thing about Earl was that he was humble. Never fighting over the spotlight. He just wanted to perform, enjoy the music. I loved watching footage of him performing with his sons. You could see him glow when his sons were performing.
Bless you Earl...❤❤❤
My pops could play a mean banjo and when I was a boy he told me Earl Scruggs was the greatest banjo player the world ever witnessed and I believe him.
The man is in his mid 80s here, not a note missed and still pickin like he was 50 years before🪕
The lyric that starts out, Well, now it's time to say goodbye....that chokes me up and makes me sad in this performance. Earl Scruggs 👊💪💪
This must have been one of Earl's last appearances on stage - What a Great man
I was at Texas Roadhouse steakhouse in Parker, CO this last summer and had a young server named Scruggs, so I had to ask... and he said yes, he's the great grandson of Earl. Apparently Earl passed some time ago as the young man said he had only met Earl a couple of times. Also said he was the only descendant that did not inherit any musical abilities. Anyway, RIP Earl, you're a legend.
God Bless you Earl and R.I.P...you were absolutely the best!
Earl did a fantastic job playing that night!! The man was 85 years old when that was shot, there is alot of so called banjo pickers half his age or under that will not even be in his class ever. I would like to see anybody at 85 doing a tour and playing like he did. A legend in his own time. Go Earl!!!!
mind blowing
I agree with your sentiment. And the proper grammar and spelling is “…there ARE A LOT of so…”
@@hock8379 WOW......there's always at least one that appoints themselves the grammar police. Boy, I bet you're fun to be around........
Never be another picker on the level of Earl. He was gifted. Huge respect for the man as a person and as a musician!!
Was this at the Ryman, I saw his last 2 performances at the ryman
Earle Scruggs inspired me to learn the banjo with the Ballad of Jed Clampett.. r.i.p. Sir.
Phil Palazzo is it hard to play? It sounds so beautiful
I just bought myself a five string banjo and I’m learning to play. I’ve been wanting to play for decades because of hearing this song as a kid.
@@MoonSunflower111 No, its actually Easy, and theres many different ways to play it.!!😊🎶
I just retired and I am strongly considering taking up the banjo. All due to the phenomenal Earl Scruggs. I have a musical background and have had to put all my hobbies on the backburner. I want to learn the 5 string banjo w/ the Scruggs style 3 finger picking. I hope it's not too difficult. 🙏🙏🙏
One wonders just how many hundreds of times Earl played this song through the years!!! But yet enjoyed it everytime.
+Tom Anderson Probably thousands. Doc Watson said a while back that he estimates having done Tennessee Stud around 4,000 times.
I don't know but he died in his late eighties and I hope I can pick anywhere near that well ever in my life. Nothing greater than dying still be able to do what you loved the most. A life well lived, Earl!
Thanks Lester and Earl from all us Baby Boomers!
Ken Berg And many of us Gen Xers also.
This makes me happy that Earl can still play the fire out of his banjo, but sad that he won't be playing anymore. Love you, Earl! ❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, I hope I can still play at that age!
@@MasonCroneMusic I'm sure just about anyone can. Unless you get arthritis. 🤷♀️
R.I.P. Earl. He had a pretty good run, 88 years. I saw him play with his sons in 1975, the hottest concert ever. He was pretty stunned by the audience reaction, did two encores. He was a great showman, very gracious.
Absolutely true!! An American Legend!!! I'm so sad to report that Mr. Earl Scruggs passed away today 3/28/12, at the age of 88. Your impact on American music will live forever and your fans will never forget you! R.I.P. Earl Scruggs!
Earl, the greatest banjo player ! from a French fan...
Earl was clearly struggling here....but he could still pick. I wept for days when he passed.
I didn't even know who he was till 2018. I guess that's kind of a good thing?🤔
How sad I am of Earl Scruggs passing. I went to a Blue Grass festival in Kerville, Texas.
There Mr. Scruggs and RIP Earnest Tubb were there....what a show they put on.
What music they played...least we have their memories and music that they left behind.
You all will be truly missed!
Love to have been there. Greetings from Rotterdam.
God bless earl.
My earliest memories are watching The Beverly Hillbillies with Mom during the first run of the series, thank you for sharing.
earl you are a legend we love you earl
you sure got that right, i saw him in 1974 at ucla in los angeles and put my first 250 mastertone on layaway. he was touring as the earl scruggs revue, when he played sally goodin', i was all in. seeing him live was really somethihg i will never forget. he broke a string, pulled one from somewhere installed it, tuned it, in 10 sec. a real professional. he does out pick men half his age still. I dont think he has past away.
i saw Earl Scruggs and Lester Flat in Boone North Carolina at the first bluegrass event 1977!
Wow, that must have been awesome!
Love the little "flourish" he did at the end!
Earl Scruggs: The Chuck Norris of banjo :)
Nope. Chuck Norris came AFTER. Figure out a different way to say it.
Chuck Norris wishes he was theEarl Scruggs of anything
Fantastic musical performance !
He was the best on the banjo ever.
That hit the spot!
énorme.. fabulous.. great moment of music.... from a french fan. Ian Moro
truly a great one. inspired me to play music and to appreciate bluegrass
Scot Painter Thank the LORD for the Scotch- Irish and Northern Ireland. Without them we wouldn't have Bluegrass Music. The Red Hànd lives.
I was in love with Ellie May Clamplett when I was a kid . This brings back some memories
Absolute Legend
There is a video on you tube that covers historic performances of Earl Scruggs with his sons and Doc Watson and several others, very enjoyable BUT in it Earl explains he wanted to expand his music with the Banjo and not play, as he puts it,'Flint Hill Special' over, and over and over again. Yet he could not escape it! It seems that's all his fans kept asking for and expecting of him, great as it always was. How frustrating for him!
If I could play like Earl I'd die happy. God bless.
What a true god , he changed music forever
R.I.P. Mr. Scruggs. You made such wonderful loving music that everyone can enjoy.
Excellent! Thanks so much for posting!
Earl helpin' the youngins along.
Earl Scruggs nails it every time! Perfect! He is the best!!! Thanks for your music Earl!!!!
Earl certainly made a big mark in this world. Other than that, I always obsessed about the line "first thing you know old Jed's a millionaire", it should've been "the NEXT thing you know". We already knew the first thing lol
We lost a legend!
I'd like to hear more about what happened to this Jed Clampett after he moved to Beverly Hills.
I didn't know if you were kidding or not so I sent this link but you should really watch from the first episode and go from there. Only the first few episides are connected because they explain how they got from the hills to Beverly Hills, CA.
The first few seasons are in black & white but I think it was beginning in the third season they were in color.

Awww! This gave me goosebumps! There will never be another like Earl Scruggs!
Earl ... unforgettable
I know it by heart too. Earl was my hero.
He was a great person. I wouldn't be a banjo player if it weren't for him!
I believe this may have been his last live performance as I can’t find another. Legendary!
Long live Mr. Earl Scruggs !
Earl Scruggs rolling banjo will fill the valleys with music forever. We love you Earl.
Nobody could ever play the banjo any better, hard to believe he has been gone over a year. What am an and what a talent could listen all day!!!!
Yep, he's one of a kind and we're grateful for him, His 1948 original recording of Foggy Mountain Breakdown I used to think it was a trick of the record. BUT the biggest "trick" was the abilities of this man himself: I mean you could probably set the Atomic clock in Fort Collins Colorado to that 1948 recording of his FMB. noone's ever been able to touch THAT recording SINCE, Earl's timing, pickup notes melody keep him uniquely unchallenged. His musical head and those fingers will never fade :)
I'm a retired speedmetal musician and this is what taught me how to play the fast.
Mark Stuart hell I wish I could play the banjo I tried and couldn't get it.
The banjo is the 2nd hardest instrument in the world to learn to play, right behind the fiddle, my dad was very good at playing the banjo, ive tried learning a bunch of times and i now know a little bit of foggy mountain breakdown, flint hill special, and jingle bells. A banjo player told my dad if you have five minutes to practice do it, if you have 15 minutes, practice it. My dad was also friends with Mike Snider from hee haw and the grand ole opry.
i can think of several harder instruments than banjo or fiddle. You mean in country music maybe
There , in my opinion, any banjo picker out there, including myself, that dont wish they could play like the late Mr Scruggs, may his name and his music live for ever!!!
Earl was in a class by himself when it came to banjo pickin. He was the master of the banjo.
Earl and Randy Scruggs. Both legends! Earl, the greatest banjo picker ever, and Randy the greatest guitar flat picker ever in my opinion. Class acts!
RIP, you gave us some great music and the memories to go with the music.
he was too good to ever be surpassed. can't be done. unfortunately he is totally blind now and in his 90''s thanks for posting. long. live the king of the banjo!!!
Thank... My hat off to Earl.. Music still plays here
Just wanted to hear some Earl & saw your post. Hard to believe it's been a year. There will never be another.
Ahh Earl and Team, gotta love this stuff :)
What a great talent that may never be duplicated ! RIP
Wouldn’t mind eating dinner at the Clampett house . They seen like a kind down to earth family
Awesome informative Video experience Y'alls God Bless Ya 🙌 🙏
a great gift from GOD-bluegrass is real and true and best
Amen! It's a shame that bluegrass isn't more popular than it is!
Bluegrass is the true All American music. Earl's phenomenal 'picking' truly enhanced it. ❤❤❤
Yes a legend! Would loved to have met him. He was a distant cousin on my mothers side.
RIP ! U R HISTORY FOR MY GENERATION!THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER EARL SCRUGGS!
The man never blinks or misses a note...awesome!!...
I am glad I had the opportunity to see him live in New York at BB King.
RIP Earl - You've earned it after years of great performances.
I enjoy this every time.
A grand send off to a great man and musician.
Thank you, Earl. It was all good ! We'll miss you.
He was a great musician.
I love this song it's been forever
One of a Kind! When you speak of country music, one thinks--George Jones. When you speak of bluegrass, one thinks--Flatt and Scruggs. When you think, greatest banjo player of all time, you think--Earl Scruggs!
Earl is so good, the best!
RIP Earl.. Ya made it possible for me to learn how to play a banjo..
Rest in peace Papa Earl. There was no other like you before you and millions trying to do what you did after you. You and the 5 string banjo are linked for eternity.
Excellent!!!
I still watch the show on MeTV. Hard to believe that shows like this were prime time when I was a kid. Listen to the words in Frank Zappa's song "The Slime" and you will see what tv is about now.
God bless him, and boy, he still can play!!!!
I met Earl at the letterman show.and got a photo with him..I showed him a photo I have with Bev Hillbillies producer Paul henning...I may be the only person with BOTH photos..if only I had Irene Ryan lol..oh well.. RIP
Gee,,a bright bright banjo picker,,,,,,wow...❤️
Earl Scuggs tu a fait vivre le banjo.
totalement d'accord, j'ai 15 ans et apprendre à jouer du banjo est un vrai plaisir !
Earl is the BOMB !!
Weird never been star struck but earl and doc Watson would just be nice to meet
The term gets thrown around a lot these days. Earl Scruggs was, is, and always will be the GOAT! Often copied, never to be replaced.
I have heard some good versions of this song played by other pickers, but no one can match Earl. It just sounds great.
Rest in Peace Earl Scruggs
absoulitly the best....
We will miss you Earl!! 3-28-12 RIP
Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, Marty;s band Superb in the strictest of terms.
Yes!
From the description:
"The well known and loved theme song of the Beverly Hillbillies that he and Lester flat played."
Reckon he meant "flat" as in "flat-out". 8-)
Ron Davis Yep!
Classic!
This is in Charlotte, NC in early 2010. He played at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass concert in late 2011 and that was his last big stage appearance.
If this is the concert that I think it is, Mr. Scuggs is performing at the Malcolm Brown Auditorirum in Shelby, NC in the Fall of 2009. He would perform in Shelby, his hometown, in Jan 2010 at our Don Gibson Theater; but I am not sure he had any other big concerts after that locally although he was known to show up at the local bluegrass festival and play with couple of the bands. Just a regular guy.... The lost of Mr. Scruggs has left a heavy heart on our town he will be missed-- RIP
