Just a little background on the song. The Lion Sleeps Tonight was originally written and recorded by Solomon Linda in South Africa in 1939. It was sung and adapted by many international artists in the 50s and 60s but it was The Tokens who had the number 1 hit in the US in 1961. Beautifully done.
The original is out here on the youtube. I find it a little creepy 😮 because of the voices and scratches of the recording

Lion Sleeps Tonight actually dates back even earlier than 1939.
It probably dates as far back as early as late 1800s.
It is actually an old Zulu song that pre- dates Soloman Linda's version in 1939.
Obviously, there were always changes to the song along the way and, it was never recorded or even written down in those early days but, simply copied by generation after generation.

I don't know what autotune is but it sounds like cheating.
@@MikeJones-rk1un It's definitely cheating. But, a lot of artists use it, these days, sadly. Cher popularized it by using it in 1998 on the song "Believe". It was used there to create unnatural corrections for effect, but as soon as artists found out about it, it started taking off. With AI taking over, it's only going to get worse.

In the early 60s, a band in the Philippines called Jitterbugs, practices this song in a rented house in Sta Cruz Manila. Being a close neighbor I always get to watch them rehease before their TV appearance. That was 57 years ago!

I was 6 years old in 1961 when this song became a phenomena by the Tokens. I loved it then, the first time I ever heard it and I still love it to this day, 59 years later, it still resonates inside me.
I was 8 when it came out. I heard it the first time in Corpus Christi, Texas in ‘61 and it has been my favorite to this day.

1961... "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" hit the airwaves when I was 7, I sang it constantly then and have loved it ever since.
Fast forward... 1970, the "garage band" I was in performed it for a High School talent show, and won.
Fast forward again... 1985, Berwyn IL. I walked into what would become my favorite little bar in the world and discovered that every night "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was the "Last Call" song. If you sang along with the bartender when they put it on the jukebox, half an hour before closing time, your last drink was free.
Fast forward again... 2014, I had the chance to revisit "my favorite little bar in the world" after being away for 22 years and discovered that after TWO ownership changes, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is Still the "Last Call" song.
Fast forward one last time, 2019, my Grandson and his new Bride chose "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" for their First Dance at their Wedding reception.

I was 13 attending my first school dance in 1961. It wasn't the first time I heard the song, but I associate the song with the dance. When ever I hear the song, I am emotionally tranported back to that magical time, at least momentarily. The 1960's, what a fantastic time to be a teenager, never forgotten, never to be repeated!

I'm 67....my FAVORITE SONG of all time ...my granny used to take me to Woolworths store and we would sit at food counter w the music box on counter ..throw in the nickle..and listen. To this song. Never got to ask her what this song meant to her ..if it were for her ...or me. I think ..me. memories were made for a lifetime .. ..👍👍👍👍💙

Ray Steinburg was the lead singer,. He was a world class Roller Skater as well as his sister Marlene. They skated a lot at the roller rink in Livonia called Riverside Area. I know, I also skated there. Great times in a very different world. 🇺🇸

Mum had this. At her funeral service it made everyone sing. And sway it was a joy to here it it made everyones day even at a sad time this was 4 weeks ago it still makes us smile when we hear it
