The composer of the tune, Earl Scruggs, had what we call "cam-tuners" which were placed between the regular tuners and bent the strings behind the nut to provide the effect. The young man in the video is using a 1960's invention of banjoist Bill Keith which enables the banjoist to manipulate the tuners with stops at pre-selected intervals.

that's extremely true. it ain't hard to find a track and sing behind it, but his you are playing stringed instruments, often implementing your own licks it the music repeating it over and over to build fluency. actually, the sleepy man banjo boys got me into wanting g to learn to play, however, after 2 years I didn't get far because couldn't find a good teacher for a good price.

I play the banjo and I can tell you that a good banjo has a brass tone ring and is HEAVY! I'm amazed that a 9 year old kid and stand and play a quality banjo without getting back spasms or some other problem more than I am that he can play that well.
Truly excellent! The little guy with the banjo is an amazing talent. Earl Scruggs would love this little guy! The fiddle player also very talented and nice phrasing and fretwork. Hope they go far and get the recognition they deserve.

I taught myself Flint Hill Special 58 years ago (when I was 12) by slowing down a Flatt and Scruggs album to 16 RPM on an old record player. I didn't have the tuner gizmo, so I did it on the fretboard. I never mastered the tune, but then again, I never mastered the 5-string. But, I still play it to this day. This kid would plays in Sleepy Man Banjo Boys out of NJ and is still ripping it. We haven't heard the last of the Mizzone Brothers.

All three of them are startlingly good, given their ages. Jonny has lightning in his fingers. Tommy needs an electric guitar. Even miked, he needs more power. Impressed I am, beyond measure.

These are the Mizzone brothers from New Jersey of all places! On Banjo nine-year-old Johnny, on fiddle twelve-year-old Robbie, and On guitar 14 year old Tommy! Yep, New Jersey's a little out-of-the-way for Bluegrass, but these brothers do it very well! Robbie said that Johnny started the song too Fast and the other brothers had to really play to keep up on this appearance. They are older now of course and they changed the name of the band to just Sleepy Man!
You kids are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING at playing BLUEGRASS music! If you guys were to ever be playing somewhere on the EAST COAST my wife and I would certainly be there to witness this! Thanks for sharing this video and I'm viewing it from the 1st state of Delaware.

I remember back when I was a young lad. I took my dad's truck down to the creek with my buddies, we took our guitars and banjos and we just jammed by the campfire. I remember that shit.
I was homeschooled for preschool and kindergarten, then took first grade 3 different times at two different schools, because I only spent two months at one school, so I had to retake. I wonder what I missed out on with homeschooling.

He wasn’t tuning, he was using his scrug tuners, he changed the note up or down a whole note. Earl Scruggs invented it.
There's a lock on the tuner that stops it at the right tuning. This is a classic banjo song. Beautiful!!

+Pawz iS There are specials tuning pegs that you can lock so it only goes down and up 1/2 a tone, or 1 tone, nothing skilled in that. But juste "in that" !

All three of them are startlingly good, given their ages. Jonny has lightning in his fingers. Tommy needs an electric guitar. Even miked, he needs more power.

These are the Mizzone brothers from New Jersey of all places! On Banjo nine-year-old Johnny, on fiddle twelve-year-old Robbie, and On guitar 14 year old Tommy! Yep, New Jersey's a little out-of-the-way for Bluegrass, but these brothers do it very well! Robbie said that Johnny started the song too Fast and the other brothers had to really play to keep up on this appearance. They are older now of course and they changed the name of the band to just Sleepy Man!

What a talent, absolutely brilliant. and the player changing the pitch on the banjo by using the tuning key while playing, some of the modern day musicians can't even do that.
