    I have a 2019 Ford F250 Super Duty with this very same issue. I took it to the dealer today who quoted $3000 (parts and labor) to repair the sunroof. Based on this video, this will save me a ton of $$! Thanks alot for making this video!

    Thank you for this video! To prevent problems, I decided to lube my sunroof today. I started by cleaning it and found a small piece of black broken plastic up there.....just like you did. Parts are now on order to do this repair. Appreciate you showing me how to do it!

      Great to hear. The roof should have lube applied at least once a year. I like most people didn't do that and it created all kinds of rattles.

    Thanks for your video. When you buy a ford truck with a sunroof you have to know at some point you will be repairing your sunroof track. 2013 was a pain. Had to change the auger. Took about 8 hours. 2018 looks easy its just the plastic track.

    Great video! I wish I did a few things differently… I would’ve put cardboard down on the stationary panel so it doesn’t get scratched by the metal like mine did! (Common sense though.) The track can be lubed after installation and cleaning/ lubing the panel should be done when removed like he had mentioned.! 4’ ladder and a magnet definitely came in handy!
    Great video! Don’t be afraid to tackle it!

    It really varies as to how much adjustment you get from set to set with the arms. Sometimes, you have the adjustment maxed out to the top like you did, and they could really stand another half a millimeter or so if you had the option, and sometimes you get it right and there's a ton of adjustment left over.
    The tolerances are pretty wide. Sometimes one side is maxed and the other side has more to go if needed.
    I do like to (and recommend) that the front glass be adjusted just a hair higher than the rear. I only adjust after I've opened it to the rear and then closed it. I don't adjust after shutting it from Vent. Reason why is, I've found there's a good bit of play (or slop) in the mechanism, and if you adjust it perfectly even after shutting it from Vent, once you open it and close it, it'll be a bit low.
    So I adjust them so the front is a hair high, and once you open it and close it, it'll be just about perfect. Plus, that leaves just a bit "room" left for when it inevitably sags a bit.
    Nice job on the video.

    • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right on the adjustment and how much play there is from set to set. Great call out for those reading the comments. Thanks for the tweak.

Wondering if it will function with it being compromised. Thanks in advance.

    • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe those parts are available at the sunroof doctor as well. Just give them a call. I know you can get them from Ford, but you'll be a Ford mark up. You should replace anything that is cracked or broken otherwise you fix will be temporary due to the weight of these roofs.

    Hey brotha, I actually used this video to replace my rails, so I appreciate it! However, that didn't fix my issue. It actually looks like on my drivers side the bracket that is attached to the cable that moves the roof back and forth has stripped on the inside so it won't move with the cable part. hopefully that makes sense but if you have any ideas on the parts I would need or how to do it I would appreciate it!!

      @3rdgenworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sounds like the track pully system is broken. That is a massive job as you have to take the entire headliner out to replace it. I haven't done that yet. That part isn't cheap, and it's a 8-10 hour job to replace.

    • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's the cable system, that is a Ford OEM part and it requires the whole headline to come out. That part, on my explore was about $800. I had Ford do that swap, because of the huge hassle to take the entire roof apart.

    • @3rdgenworkshop

      @3rdgenworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@danielbeckman272 depending on the year and mileage it's worth doing. Otherwise a dealership will knock off twice that off a trade. You have to drop the whole headliner to replace it. It's like an 6-8 hour job, and a royal pain in the butt.

      I ordered everything I needed from sunroof doctor. However, there are some parts that are OEM only. I believe on some models there is a back stop. If that broke, and the rails slid to far back, the only why to fix it is to remove the whole assembly. • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on where it broken. Several people will have one person push the button while a second moves the glass into position. You might have to remove broken sections of the track to free the space as something might be blocking it. Without seeing it, hard to give you better instructions. Placing a barrier like a tarp or plastic might be your only option if you can't clear the track of any damaged parts.

      You should still be able to get to the screws that hold the sunroof in. If it's just the guide tracks, like in this video you can replacement with no issues, just a little more of a pain to take off the sunroof. If the full track is broken, then you have to drop the headliner and it's a much bigger repair. Honestly, I don't know how they can say the tracks are broken without a full disassembly. While the large tracks do break, it's not often. 99% of the time it's the plastic guides in this video.

    could I pay you to fix mine? Not sure where you're located but the dealers are making up prices one quote was $700 another wanted $2500.

      I appreciate the offer, but no thank you. Honestly it's really simple. This was the first time I'd ever done it. Just watch the video 2 or 3 times to really get the steps down. Trust me, you can do it.

    So to clarify, I'm not the biggest idiot in the world, i worked at the dealer, I own a mechanic shop, i have been doing stuff like this for 15 years. These rails were a pain in the ass, and there looks like there was alot more broken in there then just the rails, I put the rails in and on the second or 3rd cycle everything including the new rails broke again, proably one of the worst designed things I have ever come acrost in mechanics. These sun roof are ridiculous, engineered to be just sufficient enough to work under normal circumstances. Ford really out did there selves with failure on this design. Hopefully get a new assembly today and everything will work

      I don't understand why these components are billet aluminum. They'd never break or rust.

    What if mine is stuck open how do I go about that

    • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stuck open as far as the vent, or all the way back? If vented, you can just remove the screws. If open as in back v/s vented, I'd have to see a picture or video to give you any tips on it.

    How is there not a TSB warranty for this yet?

    • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There should be a recall. And they should change to aluminum or carbon fiber for these parts. The plastic is such a bad design.

    • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without seeing it, not sure. But you should be able to still unbolt the sunroof and take it off. It will just be a little tighter to get the the screws.

    UPDATE: problem initializing ! after I push all the buttons and when pressing the last button, the sunroof pops up slightly and then starts chattering ! I manually crank the sunroof down to closed position and then try again to initialize and again after pushing the last button, it pops up and then continues to chatter until I release the button! Rinse and Repeat! A royal pain min my butt!!

    • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where is the chattering at? Could be you have a larger track problem. Also, I would recommend looking for an initializing steps for your specific year. There are a few tweaks to the steps in some years.

    Amazing how flimsy they make these parts for such an expensive truck. i just replaced one in an 04. obviously it's been a problem for many years but Ford still hasn't made the parts any better

    • @3rdgenworkshop
      @3rdgenworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you figure for a 50-100k truck they'd use metal for high break points.
