That part always makes me tear up. The fear of Jessica, the loyalty and love of Duncan and the way he seems to express he's failed somehow. It's so much.
In the book the tent scene and reunion with Duncan is a real pivotal moment. The book basically shows the inner transformation of Paul and how his childhood is basically cut short. Jessica begins to sense the change in him and realizes now she is just another moon in Paul's orbit...
The thing that always gets me about the relationship people like Duncan and Gurney had with the Duke and Paul is like...they're so loyal because the family is just GOOD, they are loyal and treat people fairly, they have honor, they're kind. Coming from the brutal treatment from the Harkonnens, their undying loyalty was won because someone was just KIND to them and treated them with dignity. It speaks to the state of the universe in that future that such a fierce and fanatical loyalty comes about just by being a good person. How much suffering and pain and betrayal there had to be in general life that being a decent human being wins you such unfailing faith.
And that's why the Emperor perceived Leto to be a threat. Anyone who can rule through kindness, loyalty and respect can command a lot more hearts and minds than someone who rules through brutality and deceit. I wish a lot of today's leaders in the real world understood that.
In general being a good superior, make it a doctor, a professor or a general makes ppl being willing to stay by your side. This happens in every place of power: the higher the power, the worse ppl can do
Oooof, someone never read the books. Leto was compassionate out of necessity on Arrakis, because he couldn't subjugate the fremen with the likes of poison (as he explained himself) and wanted to win them over as a supplementary fighting force. Clever, yes, but not altruistic.
I always liked how the relationship between Paul and Duncan evolves. Duncan is like the cool older brother or uncle but when shit hits the fan and the family is scattered he kneels to Paul as his lord.
When it comes to Paul and Duncan and their future together...shit hitting the fan is an understatement. To people new to Dune, you're in for a crazy ride. I hope they go further than the first book.
@@hmthatsniceiguess2828 From what I understand, the director is only interested in adapting Dune and Dune Messiah. If he gets to make a "Dune: Part 3", it would be an adaptation of Messiah. I'd love to see them adapt Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune, but I doubt that will ever happen sadly.

A minor contrast in my mind. Baron Harkonnen is seemingly struck by an unidentified weapon and the doors to the chamber are sealed. It appears to be morning by the time the body retrieval teams go in? And they're shocked to find the Baron clinging to life on the ceiling. Apparently at some point after the incident, they'd given him up for dead. They didn't attempt to vent the room. Nor risk their own lives just attempting to pull his loathsome body into the hallway. Then on the Atreides side, you've got their loyal retainers rushing out on to the sand. Not just in worm territory, but probably within spotting distance of Harkonnen air patrols. Just for the slim possibility that Lady Jessica and Paul might be alive. The difference in loyalty between the two factions.

For my part i watched the whole movie again and the scene that brought me here was the sardaukar chanting. Dont know what but it had something very mesmerizing
It took the Harkonnens all night before they went to check if their Baron was alive, and they presumed he was not. The instant Duncan confirms Paul is alive and Leto is dead-despite decades of more experience, despite his having greater knowledge of the planet, despite the fact they are hopelessly outnumbered by both Harkonnen and Sardaukar in virtually all directions.... He falls to one knee, and acknowledges Paul as his new Duke. Without hesitation. THAT is what makes the Atreides so much scarier to the Emperor than the Harkonnens. That a man would have every reason to turn on them, and would refuse.
Loyalty for sure but in the book its very clear everyone including members of legendary status has great respect for Paul who was considered a genius prospect for such a young age.
"My Lord Duke." And in that moment, Paul Atreides knew he had to step up and become the man worthy of Duncan's loyalty. It's such a powerful scene . , , in such a simple gesture.
That hug was relief knowing that he has not yet failed the house he pledged himself to still lives, then he remembers the chain of command and how this young boy whom he joked with is now the head of a royal line and the man he pledged his life to.
That little moment as they leave the tent gets me so emotional. A Muad'dib on the crest of the dune and then Paul emerges from the dessert. Denis did such a great job translating the story for people who had never read the books, but this? This was just for us.
Anyone notice how the little mouse at the beginning wipes the sweat off his ears and into his mouth so as not to waste his own water? Amazing little detail.

Jessica watches this interaction and notes how Duncan draws closer to Paul after that remark, all the more confident for it. She even says how sure a hand Paul has with his people. With the love the Atreides gave the other members of their household, its no wonder their loyalty bordered on the supernatural.
One of my favorite parts is how Duncan gets his ship to try to find them. Literally just walks up to sum Harkonnen who hav a ship and gives them the signal as if to say, "give me your ship or I will kill all of you" and they just turn and run bc they know even having him outnumbered just means he gets to kill more of you before he takes the ship anyway, so the supoosedly tough Harkonnens just run. Probably the smartest thing they hav ever done in their lives.
In the book the Harkonnens are still out sweeping the desert with lasguns looking for Paul and Jessica. Duncan buries a shield generator in the sand so that when they fly over and hit it with the gun they cause a nuclear explosion that kills the entire search party. It goes off right after he lands to pick them up and they have to dive into a basin to wait out the shockwave from the explosion.
