When I saw this in IMAX Thursday, there was a old man crying near me during the wormrider scene, he said read the first dune back in the 60s and he was so grateful to have lived long enough to see Paul ride the sandworm in a way he envisioned his entire life, he waited almost 60 years to see this scene....This is how you do a scene justice.

My father and a friend of the family turned out to be reading "Dune" at the same time back in the 70's. They made a point to only read a chapter a week, then meet over drinks to talk about it. They were both Dune fanatics and were not impressed with previous incarnations of film and TV adaptations. Unfortunately, they both passed before this film came out. However, I saw this film with the daughter of my father's friend, and there were times she openly had tears in both versions, wishing her dad could witness what she was seeing. We think they both would have been thrilled. I'm glad the man you saw lived to witness it.

This scene was insane in theaters. Every time the worm smashed through the sand you could feel it in your seat and through the floor. When Paul was struggling to get his hooks in, the rumbling was present even in the air, and when the sound becomes muffled and he finally stands you feel fully locked in with him. The sound design of this movie is incredible and makes a high quality theater experience feel like you're actually there

Seeing this film in theaters is just insane. The sounds just go through your chest. And the visuals, effect are incredible. Idk how the heck they pulled $190 million into a film that looks like it costed more. Incredible! I think it's safe to say that Dune: Part 2 just proves that movie budgets have gotten out of control. I've seen films cost way more than this but look terrible.

I love how you can read the Fremen's reactions as the sandworm appears. They ride the sandworms often and know well how to handle them. But the moment the Fremen get a glimpse of THIS sandworm, they know that it is far, far bigger than any first-time Rider should handle. It's a true Grandfather Worm, the pinnacle of its species and the most dangerous predator in the desert, and they respond with fear for Paul/Maud'dib.

You can sense a bit of a tension because it means that there is a big one around that scared off the "little" ones. Also they say that only the big ones travel this deep and it is so well represented here too. like a giant whale coming on the surface to breathe. Amazing.

      @valhallaxx 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I'm guessing he had a totally different version of the characters and the look of the world in his mind. Tolkien too. For example when Tolkien read excerpts from Fellowship for a radio broadcast recording (recordings of which can be found somewhere on YT), he delivers the characters' dialogues in a vastly different manner compared to how the actors decided to interpret the source material. These authors weren't of a generation who ever had stories depicted in such a realistic way. Their imagined visualisations of their stories, if they had them, might have felt spot-on to them, but for the later generations used to hyper-realism like you and me they would probably feel "wrong", if we were to somehow capture that on film.
I'm sure they would have both been absolutely flabbergasted by the films, though. Often wondered myself what Tolkien would've said about the LOTR film trilogy if he were alive to see them. Would he just complain about everything that was cut? Or the merged characters? Or the terrible English accents some of the actors had? Or would he be too overwhelmed and not even be able to judge it on its own merits because it was too far beyond what he'd seen before in film? Who knows. Showing the latest Call of Duty to a random 1977 Atari enjoyer whose newest gaming experience is Combat would probably have the same effect.
Then again, Frank Herbert did do a lot of LSD, so maybe he would have been ready for anything.

im going to go out on a limb and say a scene about a boy by jumping on a giant CGI worm wont go down as one of the greatest scenes in history. The script here couldn't be more cliché (a group doubts the hero and the hero then proves them wrong), and the choreography of him on the worm could have been better too. You never get the feeling that he's at risk of falling off the thing. it just doesn't seem nearly as difficult for the character as it should. If he is somehow super skilled at riding worms, then it's never clear what exactly the extra skill is, or why the other people who taunted him wouldn't be able to do what he did.

@@lordcrunk4790 So i actually got around to watching this film and it did feel like there was a lack of basic oversight on so many aspects including the script, visual design, etc.
Like, no even pedantic things, but BASIC stuff such as why do the desert people, who all camouflage themselves, hide in caves etc... NOT make any attempt to camouflage their black thumper devices which are their critical tool that their lives potentially depend on? In one scene you see the enemy snipers take those devices out with ease from a mile away. You also have those enemies, apparently elite paratrooper types who fly through the air, show ZERO situational awareness and stand with their back to an obvious potential cover spot where timothy's character launches a 'surprise' attack.
im not even going to get into the more problematic elements like the blatant orientalism/white saviour stuff.

What is clever direction here is that when a Fremen opens a segment of the worms body the sand irritates the worm and so the worm stays at the surface, but if you watch here Paul was hanging off the side of the worm and the worm naturally turned so the segment was facing north, so Paul didn't climb up but was turned to the top by the worm. Which is really nice to see as the other film/TV series they always climbed up on to the top.

Unbelievably well done. The timing of the music/score as he secures the hooks and begins standing up really sets this scene apart. Then the cheers of the Fremen as they realize that no normal man could ride a worm that big on their first try. For many Fremen this confirms that Paul is indeed Lisan Al Gaib, someone who can lead them to paradise and save them from their harsh reality. Zendaya shines here too, we see some of the only emotions of pure relief and joy in the entire movie here, and she displays them beautifully. And of course the honorable mention to Stilgar, someone who has practically seen it all on Arrakis who says "Woah, not that big", only adding to the suspense of the scene. Through and through, a well thought out scene executed perfectly.

🕋THE GOSPEL OF THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "the last age in which God saves man from the destruction of this old world"
(In the beginning I created mankind; that is, I created the ancestor of mankind, Adam. I gave him a form and an image, full of strength, full of vitality, and, moreover, with My glory. That is the glorious day that I created man. Adam was originally born from My hand and he represents My image. He is the only one, who has a spirit, capable of representing Me, bearing My image, and My breath. In the beginning, Eve was the second person endowed with breath whose creation I ordained, so the original meaning of "Eve" was a being who would perpetuate My glory, full of My vitality and in addition endowed of My glory. Eve came from Adam. Therefore she also bears My image, because she is the second person created in My image. However, the evil one trampled and captured the offspring of the ancestors of mankind, and brought down the world of man in complete darkness, and it was done so that the offspring would no longer believe in My existence. Even more abominable is that, while the evil corrupts people and tramples them, it cruelly robs My glory, My testimony, the vitality I give them, the breath and the life I give them, the All My glory in the human world, and all the heart blood I have spent on mankind. I will take back My glory, I will take back My testimony that exists among people, and everything that was Mine and that I gave to mankind in the old days-I will completely conquer mankind. Therefore, I inform humanity that all I want are those created by My hand, the saints whom I love and do not belong to any other being. I accept only My testimony as the development of Myself as the object of My pleasure. This is My will.)
      Almighty God said
In the BEGINNING I created mankind; that is, I CREATED the ancestor of HUMANITY, ADAM. HE HAS A FORM and IMAGE, full of STRENGTH, full of vitality, and, moreover, with My GLORY. That was the GLORIOUS DAY when I CREATED MAN. After that, Eve was MADE from Adam's BODY, and she was the ancestor of man, so the people I created are full of My breath and full of My glory. 🙏
Adam was ORIGINALLY BORN from My HAND and he REPRESENTS My IMAGE. Thus the ORIGINAL MEANING of "Adam" is a being that I CREATED, filled with My PRECIOUS POWER, filled with My GLORY, with FORM and IMAGE, with SPIRIT and BREATH. He is the only being, possessing a SPIRIT, with the ABILITY to REPRESENT Me, BEAR My IMAGE, and RECEIVE My BREATH. ☀️🙏
In the BEGINNING, Eve was the SECOND BREATHFUL PERSON whose CREATION I ORDAINED, so the ORIGINAL MEANING of "Eve" is a being who will PERSUITE My GLORY, full of My vitality and moreover endowed with My glory. Eve CAME FROM Adam, so she also HAS MY IMAGE, because she is the SECOND PERSON CREATED in My IMAGE. 🙏
The ORIGINAL MEANING of "Eve" is a LIVING PERSON, with SPIRIT, FLESH, and BONES, My SECOND TESTIMONY as well as My SECOND IMAGE to mankind. They are the ancestors of mankind, the PURE and PRECIOUS WEALTH of MAN, and ORIGINATED from the FIRST and LIFE of SPIRIT-INHABITED CREATURES. 🙏
However, evil trampled and captured the offspring of the ancestors of mankind, and plunged the human world into complete darkness, and made it so that the offspring would no longer believe in My existence. 😪
Even more abominable is that, while the evil corrupts the people and tramples them, it cruelly takes away My glory, My testimony, the vitality I give them, the breath and the life I give them , My entire glory in the human world, and all the heart blood I spent on humanity.
Humanity is NO LONGER IN THE LIGHT, and PEOPLE HAVE LOST EVERYTHING I GIVEN to them, and they have THROWN AWAY the GLORY I GIVEN. ☀️
How can they recognize that I am the LORD of ALL CREATIONS? How can they DEFINITELY BELIEVE in My EXISTENCE in HEAVEN? How will they DISCOVER the manifestations of My GLORY BELOW THE EARTH? ☀️
How will these grandchildren treat the God their own ancestors revered as the Lord who CREATED them? These poor grandchildren have fully "exposed" to the EVIL the GLORY, the IMAGE, and the testimony I GIVEN to ADAM and EVE, as well as the LIFE I GIVEN to mankind and upon which they depend for existence ; and, they are TOTALLY NOT CONCERNED with the PRESENCE of EVIL, and GIVE MY FULL GLORY to it. 😪
Isn't this itself the origin of the title "garbage"? How can such mankind, such WICKED demons, such WALKING corpses, such SHADES OF SATAN, such ENEMIES of Mine, POSSESS My glory? 😪
I WILL RECOVER My GLORY, I WILL RECOVER MY TESTIMONY THAT EXISTS FROM THE PEOPLE, and ALL that was Mine and I GAVE to mankind in the FIRST TIME---I will completely CONQUER mankind. ☀️🙏
However, you must KNOW that the PEOPLE I CREATED are HOLY PEOPLE WHO BEAR MY IMAGE and MY GLORY. 🙏
They were not counted to Satan, nor were they trampled upon by him, but only pure manifestation of Me, FREE from the slightest stain of SATAN'S POISON. Therefore, I INFORM mankind that the ONLY thing I want is those who are CREATED by My HAND, the HOLY ones whom I LOVE and do NOT belong to any other being. 🙏☀️
Besides that, I will be DELIGHTED with them and I will consider them My GLORY. However, what I want is not the humanity corrupted by SATAN, which belongs to SATAN now, and is NOT what I originally CREATED. ☀️
Because I intend to RECOVER My GLORY EXISTING in the HUMAN WORLD, I will completely CONQUER the REMAINS of humanity, as PROOF of My GLORY in DEFEATING SATAN. 🙏
I ACCEPT only My TESTIMONY as the DEVELOPMENT of MYSELF as the OBJECT of My PLEASURE.
      This is My WILL. 💐🙏

in my opinion what makes this scene so good is not the unbelievable shots of Paul fighting for his life to grapple and stabilize himself on the worm but the REACTIONS of the Fremen seeing him triumph and proving his worth to not only the believers but the non-believers as well. Those shots of the reactions, though simple, keep us grounded in reality and make us equals with the Fremen which made us ALL feel like 'oh shit he actually did it', and produces the goosebumps that we all got. This movie is pure cinema.

It's the first time the worm is seen not as a threat, not as a economic commodity, but as part of an ecosystem, as a living being to thread carefully around and respect.

The amazing thing about the Balrog was that it was exactly how I imagined it from the books. Tolkien was often over descriptive and it was so well put down on film it was nuts.

4:01 the noise it makes when it rears its head into the dune.
It's like all the sound design is to compliment and show how fast these worms are. I love it.

How do you get off? Seems to be a common question. Note how Paul utilizes the maker hooks to rotate the worm so that he ends up on top. Reverse procedure and the worm rolls down. Do that when you find a suitable place and you jump off. I expect to see the technique utilized in Part 2. It's how the fremen travel from place to place using the worms. Wouldn't be a very practical mode of transportation if you could never get off.

In most cases for the Fremen the way they get off is to simply wait for the worm to get exhausted, and then they dismount once it stops. Riding the worm and exposing its soft tissue fatigues and irritates it, so eventually they will slow down and come to a halt. If the Fremen still have distance left to travel they sometimes decide to just get an extra thumper and call a second worm.
