Thank you so very much my pard!!! Your congratulations and correspondence means the world to me!
The channel has now reached 14,000 subscribers - not quite 14 million views - but 3 million in total! There is now a total of one million views let alone on my video featuring your rendition of “The Bonnie Blue Flag!” Looking forward to working with you once again in the future, and hopefully someday both of our channels can reach the 100,000 subscriber mark! Then we can both receive the famed silver plaque and will have truly spread the music and history of our beloved Civil War era to viewers of all ages and future generations.
P.S - I put your fantastic rendition of “The Glendy Burk” on this list video! It came in at number 10. I couldn’t leave out my pards in the 2nd South Caroline!

All For Me Grog -- one of the best songs ever. I make one of my characters (who happens to be the son of a CW veteran and an alcoholic) sing this when he's feeling happy -- poor lad. Shenendoah is so beautiful and melancholy. Great list. I enjoyed doing tonight's dishes to the concert!

That means a great deal, thank you very much madame! Many of these shanties are work songs and created for sailors to perform physical labor while singing - so they were perfect for your purposes! What “character” are you referring to?

The song called "The Mermaid" is also entitled "The Ocean Waves May Roll." I know that because I used to have a record album called "Rollicking Sea Shanties" by Oscar Brand. In his version, some of the lyrics are different. For example, the verse referring to the captain foretelling the ship's doom goes like this:
"Then up spoke the captain of our gallant ship,
And a well-spoken man was he,
'I have married me a wife in Boston town,
Tonight, she widow will be.' "
There was also a verse about the cabin boy:
"Then up spoke the cabin boy of our gallant ship, and a well-spoken cabin boy was he,
    'I've a father, I've a mother, in Salem Town,
Tonight, they childless will be.' "
    The final verse goes:
"Then, three times around went our gallant ship,
    Three times around went she,
Yes, three times around went our gallant ship,
As she sank to the bottom of the sea."
By the way, Oscar Brand, a well-known folk singer and music historian, was also known for having a rather crappy personality. In fact, some people say that he was the inspiration for the "Sesame Street" character, Oscar The Grouch (although others say that this character was actually based on a grumpy New York City taxi driver that someone connected to the show had encountered one day).
I've heard that song "What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor" (also known as "Way, Hey, Up She Rises") many times before, although I don't remember all the lyrics. I once found it in a book about sea shanties, in which the tune also had verses about a drunken soldier as well as a drunken sailor. I think they went something like this:
"What do you do with a drunken soldier (3 times),
    Early in the morning?
    Chorus:
Way, hey up she rises (3 times),
    Early in the morning.
Put him in the guardhouse 'til he gets sober (3 times),
    Early in the morning.
    Chorus:
Why, hey, up she rises, etc, etc."

Your great knowledge of Sea Chanties and Civil War era music is vast, and I am so thankful that you decided to subscribe to this channel and share it with everyone. Thank you Michael! Fascinating about the different version of "The Mermaid!" That makes the song far more dark and poignant. Was the song sung slower and less jolly? I will have to download the album and see for myself!
Matter of fact, I have heard Oscar Brand singing and recently got his Civil War album. I can see why he is famous but nothing about him particularly made him stand out to me - just a man, guitar, and good voice!
By the way - I was wondering, are all of these long comments from your head or are you referring to something? Quite impressive!

No, the "Mermaid" song was still sung in a jolly way on Oscar Brand's album.
As for my "long comments," most of them are from memory, because I have listened to certain songs so many times, that I know them by heart.
Anyway, thanks for being one of the few TH-cam users who didn't complain about my comments being "too long."

Ahh - the first comment asking why various songs were not on the list! Haha, nice to see you again Gabe. Was considering adding “The Monitor and the Merrimack” on the list - but with 20 songs already it would have been hard to fit that in or justify an honorable mention. With so many amazing songs of the sea, I had to leave some out! Maybe a second list in a year or so! On the topic of “The Hunley,” I have never actually heard that - and will make sure to check it out.

Wow didn’t expect what will we do with a drunken sailor.

    • @HistoryBoy
      @HistoryBoy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Haha, originally I was not going to put it on the list - but it was featured on the 97th Regimental Stiringband’s Album of Civil War Era songs “Shanty Irish.” This meant that it was a popular tune during the war, though it is mostly used in a joking manner today! It is also fun to throw in a song which people will recognize, and which will help them realize that the roots of many songs today are from the Civil War era.

Ha, he is a great singer but I do not agree! The way he sang it was not authentic for the Civil War era, and the band that played it here, the 97th Regimental Stringband, always plays their tunes in an authentic manner.

Old Maui and Drunken Sailor are not Civil War Shanties

    • @HistoryBoy
      @HistoryBoy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Though they are not from the Civil War specifically 1861-65, they are featured on multiple albums of Civil War music and are certainly Civil War era. Many of these songs may have been written before the war (1830-1860,) but were likely very popular with sailors during and even after the conflict!
