RIP Andy. One of my favorites who blazed a path for Scottish folk music. Great voice, great stage presence and a great performer. This too was a "car fav" sung at the top of our lungs and will continue to be for as long as I have breath!
I am 36 and grew up with my parents playing these guys all the time. Now I sing this to my 4yo as a lullaby and the 11yo has latched onto 'if i was a blackbird' when she can't sleep. I hope they are in the afterlife living it up together.
My friend got married this summer and he invited me. They had karoake at the reception and i sang this one. His grooms whole half of the family clapped along and made me feel so much less nervous about singing in front of people.
nevermind the extensive amounts of misfortune behind each word in the work. Then kin that with the culture lost. The only way to let the world know of what theg lost is to ramble an rover
Whether he was solo or with Silly Wizard, Andy M Stewart was the first Celtic musician whom I remember loving. His voice is incredible, and is the first I think of when I think of this beautiful genre.
I've loved his singing, and am so sad he's gone too soon. Andy's songs always sounded in the tradition from which he came. This one makes a perfect epitaph.
Love it,I was an original member of 1RCHA pipes and drums way back in the 80's,and we'd finish many an informal session not on the pipes, but by singing this.
Omg its been 4 years that i had a part of the lyrics stuck in my head and on my facebook. I always thought it was just some rambling someone wrote on a wall in a hostel in Florence that i stayed at to come and find out its a song....all this time it was a song...wow...thanks so much...
😃 Oh, I *LOVE* this - the best of all the recordings. You can hear the joy and affection he has for the song. Magical! 💕 *MAGICAL!* 💐 Thank you for posting. 😌 May we *all* have a merry, happy, safe and healthy, peaceful and *PROSPEROUS* new year! Blessings! 💕
Oh, there's sober men, and plenty And drunkards barely twenty There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl But gie me a ramblin' rover Fae Orkney down to Dover We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world I've roamed through all the nations Ta'en delight in all creation And have tried a wee sensation where the company did prove kind When parting was no pleasure I've drunk another measure To the good friends that we treasure, for they always are in our mind Oh, there's sober men, and plenty And drunkards barely twenty There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl But gie me a ramblin' rover Fae Orkney down to Dover We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world There's many that feign enjoyment From merciless employment Their ambition was this deployment from the minute they left the school And they save and scrape and ponder While the rest go out and squander See the world and rove and wander, and are happier as a rule Oh, there's sober men, and plenty And drunkards barely twenty There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl But gie me a ramblin' rover Fae Orkney down to Dover We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world If you're bent with arthritis Your bowels have got colitis You've gallopin' bollockitis, and you're thinkin' it's time you died If you've been a man of action While you're lying there in traction You may gain some satisfaction thinking "Jesus, at least I tried!" Oh, there's sober men, and plenty And drunkards barely twenty There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl But gie me a ramblin' rover Fae Orkney down to Dover We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world There's sober men, and plenty And drunkards barely twenty There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl But gie me a ramblin' rover Fae Orkney down to Dover We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world
Wonderful song. I've been looking for this particular version and had little luck until now. One thing, though - your verses are in the wrong order. Nothing other than that. Thanks for uploading!

It reminds me a lot of some Cork songs, not just the songs but the way he sings it.
Couldn't have said it better myself sir, doing the same in the car till I'm robbed of the ability to belt this out!
Andy was a great friend and neighbour who will is sorely missed , what a performer and ambassador for Scottish and Irish folk music .
Gaels forever!

How can you not love this song? A grand cantering bit of a tune and clever, sharp words stitched together with elegant rhyming grace and precision.

That is something great, Andy, thank you very much and rest in peace.
I am the very opposite of a ramblin' rover. But I become one in spirit for about three minutes whenever I listen to this song.

I miss you dad, what I wouldn’t give for everyone to be around the kitchen table singing this together just one more time!
I've loved his singing, and am so sad he's gone too soon. Andy's songs always sounded in the tradition from which he came. This one makes a perfect epitaph.
This is a surprisingly gentle treatment of this standard. The warmth of the voices is captivating.
If I'm not mistaken, this is the original.
@@Archangelm127 Thank you. This is lovely.
I give them the respect they deserve!😊
I love this song. It was my first introduction to Silly Wizard, many many years ago. RIP Andy, and Johnny too.
RIP Andy. Really great guy with an even better tune. Love this song, always brings me to tears
Great classic voice! Love this ❤

Thank you Andy and the rest of Silly Wizard. Big part of my childhood right here
Jesus at least I tried - a great motto! RIP Andy a great singer
This day is the first I've heard this song. I'm in LOVE. My favorite.

Thank you uploading and for the lyrics! Beautiful performance ♥
It's interesting that he wrote the Queen of Argyll based on this old classic and people mistakenly think it's an old song

Such a free-spirit song, I love it!
Silly wizard ws one of the greatest Celtic bands ever. God bless them! or Goddess, as the case may be.
Celtic..? Sound Germanic to me. They’re singing in English, not Gallic.
One of my favorite Silly Wizard songs!
I always throw on this song and sit back with a glass of scotch I want to remember better times
Beautiful song with a lot of meaning to it
RIP Andy M Stewart - a man o' action!
Just may be my favorite song of all time.
Outstanding song, excellent version.
I'll have this sung at me wake!
Such a great song... the best to spend scottish high games in washington
Taken back to a faire troupe with this, Almost fifteen years gone since that summer. With this tune.
Rest in peace buddy
What a beautiful Flag !!!
Oh, there's sober men, and plenty
And drunkards barely twenty
There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl
But gie me a ramblin' rover
Fae Orkney down to Dover
We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world
I've roamed through all the nations
Ta'en delight in all creation
And have tried a wee sensation where the company did prove kind
When parting was no pleasure
I've drunk another measure
To the good friends that we treasure, for they always are in our mind
Oh, there's sober men, and plenty
And drunkards barely twenty
There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl
But gie me a ramblin' rover
Fae Orkney down to Dover
We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world
There's many that feign enjoyment
From merciless employment
Their ambition was this deployment from the minute they left the school
And they save and scrape and ponder
While the rest go out and squander
See the world and rove and wander, and are happier as a rule
Oh, there's sober men, and plenty
And drunkards barely twenty
There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl
But gie me a ramblin' rover
Fae Orkney down to Dover
We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world
If you're bent with arthritis
Your bowels have got colitis
You've gallopin' bollockitis, and you're thinkin' it's time you died
If you've been a man of action
While you're lying there in traction
You may gain some satisfaction thinking "Jesus, at least I tried!"
Oh, there's sober men, and plenty
And drunkards barely twenty
There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl
But gie me a ramblin' rover
Fae Orkney down to Dover
We will roam the country over, and together we'll face the world
There's sober men, and plenty
And drunkards barely twenty
There are men of over ninety that have never yet kissed a girl

+LstCowboy They probably have galloping bollockitis
+Dan Hazing precisely ;-)
Well I mean, never have I seen such an overwhelmingly high majority of likes.
14 people are Wee Frees.
0:30 when farting was no pleasure
probably 3 people who havent been men of action and cant think jesus at least i tried
5 men are men of over 90 who have never yet kissed a girl.
Now 14 people's bowels have got colitis.
CrackedLogic Politics seems to be 16 now.
CrackedLogic Politics make that 91for me :(
42 with arthiritus
45 who are thinkin it's time they died.
woop!
The Scottish equivalent of Planxty and I mean that in the best possible sense.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
3. 1 sober. What drunk at 20. And one 90 year old who's a tad bit shy.
Wonderful song. I've been looking for this particular version and had little luck until now.
One thing, though - your verses are in the wrong order. Nothing other than that. Thanks for uploading!
How does the writer of the original song get the order of his own song wrong? Silly Wizard wrote it... or at least was the guy who sung it first...
CrackedLogic Productions I'm pretty sure Spaz meant the printed lyrics at the top of the page, lol. ;)
Jesus, at least he tried! ;)
It is a folk song?
He made it up. But it is folk song style.
I miss Andy M. Stewart.
Is this from any of their albums, or did they just do this live only?
Live Wizardry, not sure if it appears on other albums.
LstCowboy Thanks.
Its a song.
