    One of my great grandpas and his brother joined the 15th Mississippi during the siege of Corinth. They ended up running away and after the war my great grand uncle became a Mormon and moved to Texas and eventually Utah. The song "Hard Times Come Again" was acutally written by a man from the north named Stephen foster who wrote other songs about the war like "Was my brother in the battle" or "That's what's the matter." He also wrote famous songs like "Beautiful Dreamer and "I dream of jeanie with the light brown hair." Just thought it was a interesting fact it was written by a northerner but used by both sides instead of just the north.

    Another triumph, HB: a fine choice of songs and rarely-seen images. "Lorena" is an interesting inclusion: the words and music were written by Northerners but it was well-liked by both sides during the war. Incidentally, I think the best song sung during the war is "The Battle Cry of Freedom", popular (with different lyrics, as was often the case) with both Union and Confederate soldiers. I'm looking forward to your 10 greatest Northern songs video!

    Most people nowadays have no idea that southerners that fought in the war fought for the land that they called home. We get drilled into our head that everything was black and white, that the war was all about freeing slaves. It was much more. 98% of southerners owned no slaves. There was a great battle fought with and by the European money powers, playing both sides (that has not changed either). It was about power, control over the land, resources, and the seas...trade.
    Here is an interesting thing that many in the north and west usually miss. Take for example the city of Natchez, Mississippi and counties especially up and down the Mississippi River. Natchez was and is filled with antebellum homes of cotton traders who dealt in plantations, and cotton trade. Do you realize that most of these folks came to Natchez from back east; New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, etc. They built these luxurious estates as their second home. Do not down the south to the point of making us ashamed or blaming all the ills of bigotry, racism on the south. It is more grey than purely black and white.

    I've heard that song "Old Abner's Shoes" before, only it was called "General Patterson" (after a Union general by that name), and the chorus went like this:
    "So, lay ten dollars down
    And count them one by one,
    If you'll just show me the man
    That whipped General Patterson."
    I believe "O Susanna" was written long before the Civil War, and was intended to be a "going west" tune rather than a war song.

    "Cheer boys, cheer" is based on the English tune of the same name - written by Henry Russell ( who also wrote the music for A Life on the Ocean Wave, quick march of the Royal Marines).
    Personally, I like Southern Soldier.

    • @HistoryBoy
      @HistoryBoy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is fascinating! Thank you so much for giving me this information. I will take it down in my notes! I have been planning a video for a long time on Civil War songs who took inspiration from or their own tune from Irish or English songs. Don’t know if it will succeed as a video but it will be very interesting. Also I just realized “a life on the ocean wave” was turned into a song called “a life on the Vicksburg bluff!” Thanks again! P.S southern soldier is a good one.

    One other thing, the song Dixie was actually written in the north, or actually by a man who lived in southern Illinois. However, Southern Illinois fought for the south. At Gettysburg the song Dixie changed sides. It was first the battle song of an Illinois regiment. During that battle it changed south and went to the Confederacy. At the same time the Battle Hymn of the Republic was written by a southerner. Both songs changed sides and the Battle of Gettysburg.
