    I've been a co angler for 50 year plus I always tell the boater there is no pressure and there is no pressure on me. And I learn from every boater that I fish with my goal is to fish as pro side and fish for a championship .thank you for your time and talant. May God bless you

    Been going back thru and watching a bunch of your older videos, and I find myself catching something I missed from the 1st time I watched them. Probably because I listen to them on a drive to my next BFL. I am on year 3 of fishing the BFLS as a co-angler and have fished an open and a Toyota as a co-angler also. For me the only thing that frustrates me is having a boater who believes I am there to learn/ get a guide trip. My goal in every tournament is to win or cash a check. But I always go into with goals. 1st goal is to get bit. 2nd is get 1 in the boat for points. Everything after that is bonus. I have had days where bites are hard and have had a good 3 lbs fish come off at the boat and like you I move on to the next one. And like you I have seen guys have a blowout and they are done for the day.

    As a full time co-angler, it is tough to adjust to each boater. As a veteran, I was told a long time ago to adapt and overcome. I use this mentality for my tournaments. I really enjoy the boaters POV on this subject. Thanks for another great video. Great information!!

    Im a long time co-angler and very much enjoy it. I tell every boater I draw the same thing. Don’t worry about guarding your water cause I treat it all as your water till you get done with it. In other words I don’t really use the center of the boat as the line. What if the boater is culling or retying and the wind blows the boat around to where the juice is at the back of the boat. No way am I going to take that cast even though its on my end of the boat. I just tell them let me know what it is and I will stay out of it. Many times I have had boaters go backwards so I can have fresh water or even back in docks or let me have first cast. I have made so many friends and cashed several checks doing it. I learn something new each time. All American bound! Good luck yall!

    You said it there towards the end… I didn’t have any expectations going into the day. I needed an idea of the type of fishing HE was going to be doing so I could think of other techniques that would get bit in the same situations. The only time I would fish the same way as my boater was if it was a flipping deal but even then I flipped a different style of bait, heavier or lighter, different targets etc.

    Great perspective and info Todd! As a co-angler it is best to go with the flow and not get rattled. One thing that helps me is that I remember the times I have caught fish in the last minute of a tournament! For the record your Dirty Jigs buzzbait is awesome 👍

    Good stuff! I think this series is great. When I fished tournaments we didn't have co anglers, we had draws where you would have to flip to see whose boat you were taking. If I ended up in the back I still fished as hard as I could and wanted my 4 hours on the front. Whish was something I didn't like to do (after all this was somebody else's boat) But I paid the same fee and I was in the same standings through out the year. I am looking to get back in so I wanted to fish a year in the co angler seat. It is great to have an idea what to expect.

    Great video Todd!
    I've competitively fished for many years in a partner format up north, here in Ontario, Canada. I've only fished the amateur side 3 times but have been extremely rewarded each time as I watched, listened and grew tenfold as an angler. I've pretty much out fished my boaters!
    I fully agree that the co-angler or amateur needs to have an open mind going into any event and on any given day. Today, I could very well be the boater on any given day, and in any circuit - minus the perfect bassboat, top gear and my 3 young bambinos... 😉 Regardless, I would have no problem and would feel blessed to be your co-angler. We would get it!!
    Thanks for the honest content and priceless viewpoints from both sides.
    Honest, professional and bang on point. 👍
    Respectfully,
    Kim

    You also have to adjust to the speed of the boater, I see a lot up front tossing a swim Jig or crank and the guy in the back is trying to wacky rig or flip a dock.. so if the guy in the front is moving with say a swim jig, get out a spinnerbait or lipless bait or something that also moves fast. When the boater slows down you pick up a slow rod as well.. drop shot, worm, c rig, jig n pig, stick bait.

    Awesome topic and content. Hope as many pros and boaters watch this as co-anglers. Question; say you aren’t catching em for whatever reason, would you ever ask the co-angler for suggestions or if he has a spot to try? Keep the good videos coming and pray the water goes down soon!

    • @thebassheads3534
      @thebassheads3534 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bet I can answer that for Todd… Anytime a coangler tries to fish like the boater or the boater tries to fish like the co it NEVER EVER works out. Front of the boat or the back, you have to do your own thing.

      I've caught more fish when co-angling by pitching, dragging some type of plastic behind the boater. It's rare that you catch fish, fishing the way the boater does.

    As a co angler I don’t usually do something totally different than my boater. I usually just throw something that’s a little different. For example if my boat is flipping laydowns. I’ll still flip lay downs just with a little different setup. I’ll usually use a smaller profile bait with lighter weight. And most of the time I out fish my boater doing that. I also watch him very close and I hit spots he hasn’t. I had a tournament this past weekend my boater was throwing a buzz bait. So I threw a little pop r on a spinning rod and did better than my boater. I also wouldn’t like drawing a boater like you. I prefer guys that aren’t that good. Guys that are really good don’t leave many fish behind.

    The unwritten rule is to never cast forward or past the console. If the boater is fishing fast or moving water (casting into the current), I will cast forward, somewhere past the front of the boat and ask him if he is fine with where I am casting. (In case I hang up, he doesn't have to go backwards to retrieve my lure).

    Good stuff again!! I don’t like the co angling stuff just because I’d rather be the boater but figured I’d give it hell this year but will change to boater for the super in September. I will I say I try my damnedest to go in with a “don’t care what they are doing” attitude but I also ask the night before what kind of areas are gonna be in although I literally take all my tackle from my boat with me when I co angle because 1 I don’t know what we are gonna be doing and 2 if he’s flipping a Texas rigged senko in 30 feet I wanna be running something different. I tried throwing the same thing as my boater on rayburn this year, it didn’t work in my favor I didn’t get a bite all day so I swapped up the next day and caught 2 littles but at least I caught something🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ boater on second only caught 4-5 and weighed in 3 so I didn’t feel too bad.

    Done with co-angling, every tournament was like a lottery, am I getting good or bad attitude boater. Look the results of those tournaments - Opens, FLW - majority of co-anglers do not catch a limit,a lot of them zero or catch just one fish, though they fish with boaters who practiced several days and they are on the fish. Most boaters don't want you to catch a fish, because they think they could catch it later. Unless you have common friends in that pro circle, in thatcasde they treat you way better.

  • @areddfishing7473
    @areddfishing7473 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You think it is ok to ask your boater what style of fishing they are doing? like you said be up on the bank leaving a dust cloud so you know what to expect? I wish more boaters are like you are not out to make your co anglers have bad days.

  • @mikestephenson4800
    @mikestephenson4800 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The future of co-angler competition is coming to a end. That’s why you see them being phased out of the high end tournaments and the many reasons you are bringing up in your videos why it’s not fair for them to invest their hard earned money to be in a boat for 8+ hours with a real jerk. The best way for a co-angler to get better is team tournaments with a good friend.

    • @thebassheads3534
      @thebassheads3534 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In all of the events I fished as a co I can say I only had 1 guy that was a jerk but I’ve drawn a dozen that most co’s would consider jerks. Coangling is a completely different mind set. That boater owes you absolutely nothing except a little bit of respect.

    • @johnnielarge5506
      @johnnielarge5506 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With boat prices only going up Co-anglers will not go away. There’s Co-angling opportunities from the opens/ Toyota series all the way down to your local Bass club. I agreed with removing them from the Elites and former FLW tours because at that level it’s your income and for every 3lber that the co catches that could be the difference in getting paid or not.

    • @WarEagleTheBest
      @WarEagleTheBest 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Co anglers will phase out because of the technology, cameras will replace marshals. And it's very sad when co's pay $600 entry fees and don't get a shot to catch a fish, because of bad attitude boaters. Look Open tournament result - majority of co's can't catch even a limit...

    • @toddcastledinefishing5924
      @toddcastledinefishing5924  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I doubt they will go away anytime soon they are a big factor in the industry. Technology will always be a struggle for the majority of fishermen and there are limitations with them . They are phased out at the pro level but they should be at the very top.
