not really, yes they are very stereotypical but they are still classic characters, as long as the charcters have their own personalities and characteristics that are unique and use their heritage to their advantage, it could make for a great story
@tundro27 completely agree! I do love what they did for Classifiedn though. A little tweak here and there but the ..."spirit" of the character remains true 👍
Spirit and Quick Kick are AWESOME! Seriously, they made Spirit so wise and intelligent. He was always solving problems and was saving the day. Quick Kick was funny and cool. I think it’s fine.

Yup I would agree that it was more of a positive thing exposing kids at a young age to other cultures, even if they were kinda stereotypes, at least for the most part they were positive 👍
Not at all. These guys are from a time when people weren't at sensitive and childish. I love Spirit and his look, I'd never want him updated. IF Quick Kick would get an update, it should be for practical reasons over cultural. Barefoot and shirtless in a military unit may not work long term 😅
I did like the Devils Due spirit update, the all black uniform with his fang necklace and long hair. It was a bit generic but I think it kinda worked :) of course nothing beats the original look for me. Agree on quick kick, it was more an issue with practicality. I d remember them giving him a jacket though in the movie so that's progress 🤣
As a kid I loved Quick Kick Spirit was cool but I loved the voices Quick Kick did. I didn't read the comics back then so I only have good memories of him. The black & yellow outfit for Quick Kick was absolutely inspired by Cobra Kai. The Hasbro designers said they borrowed a lot of ideas from 80s movies for the Pursuit of Cobra line.
Oh that's awesome! Talk about forward thinking. Had they incorporated a similar design to their Classified version I'm sure that it would've increased sales of that figure given how popukar Cobra Kai is nowadays 👍
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf I love the Pursuit of Cobra Quick Kick. It's my favorite costume design for him and I was really hoping that the Classified Series might take some inspiration from it. Considering Quick Kick was a Hollywood stuntman, giving him an outfit in PoC that was slightly reminiscent of one of Bruce Lee's outfits was quite inspired.
Larry Hama is of Asian decent and a Vietnam War veteran. Hama has written the majority of G.I. Joe comics starting with Marvel and right up to today's run with whatever company has the rights now. Hama also wrote the file cards for the toy line except for Crystal Ball, Stephen King wrote his file card and created the character for his son. Also Snake Eyes was not Storm Shadow's enemy in the TV show due to Snake Eyes being mute. Hama also stated that he should have made Snake Eyes of Asian heritage instead of white. This is why Snake Eyes is Asian in his stand alone G.I. Joe live action movie.
Yup Larry Hama truly is the godfather of modern gijoe. And almost all the credit goes to him and rightfully so. Although I did read somewhere that he initially did not agree that Snake Eyes be Asian. That he intentionally made him white. As Storm Shadow was supposedly his choice to be an asian good guy. Hence his joining Cobra was all a ploy to seek out his true masters killer. But he quickly changed his tune and backed the movie. Which leads me to think that he was probably asked to be supportive of the movie or he was paid to be. Either way. The movie flopped because the producers just didn't get it. They didn't understand the character of Snake Eyes regardless of race. But that's just my opinion on the matter 👍👍👍
@pauljoyner4338 and hired a good looking Asian when what they should have dibe was get a skilled fighter. Although the guy who played Storm Shadow was awesome. Have you seen his show Warrior? Excellent show!
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf No I haven't. I don't do much streaming or Netflix or whatever it's on. I'm real old school. Just an antenna and what local channels I can get. Got it from my parents, I'm 51 and I'm not paying for TV when they still have it for free. Lol
Great video! As a kid, I thought it was cool that the GI. JOE Team represented all different types of Americans of different ethnicities and sexes and it was never an issue, and while Spirit and Quick-Kick are indeed stereotypes, at least there aren't negative ones. Having some Native blood on my father's side of the family, I actually liked seeing some representation of First Nations people as action heroes, even if it wouldn't be considered politically correct today; it was the 1980s and they were at least trying. There is no reason why Spirit and Quick-Kick should be discontinued as characters in the G.I. JOE franchise, they can easily be finessed into more modern incarnations without any trouble and shouldn't be given the "Song Of The South" treatment from Hasbro.
Completely agree! To be honest, none of these issues really mattered to many of us as kids right? I mean as far as I was concerned, they were cool characters and more importantly, HEROES. So much of this cancelling nonsense today are just extreme over reactions IMHO 🙄
Doc and Airborne fit in really well with the first wave, I didnt realize they were 2nd wave. Are there any other later ones that look at home with that original, Army Man-look, wave? As for Spirit, I did think itwas odd that they had a 19th century Cavalry scout in a modernday set line but I recall some of my Native American friends liked his hair so maybe if they'd adjusted his body sculpt some and modern Army colors? Cool that Quick Kick got trained by the Master of Martial Arts himself; that had been a fav of mine in the 70s.
The original 82 wave of joes were re-released in 84 alongside Airborne and co which might have led to the confusion? As for later Joes that may have fit in well with the first wave? I'd include the new infantry soldier Footloose or the later one Hit and Run. Basically those with predominantly green uniforms? 🤔once Spirits wave was out I knew we were in for a real special and unique line of toys 👍👍👍
I think if they're well defined and well written characters most people don't mind. I think the classified versions are a good indication of how to handle them in the future, by not going overboard with cliches, but allowing them to keep their identies in tact.
Quick Kick was Bruce Lee without the licensing, and an altered background. Spirit was and is one of the most popular Joes. And Airborne as noted, was also native and he was always on a team with Spirit in my play time, because they were both among my favorites.
Yup I'd call him a homage to Bruce Lee visually....I think his personality was unique though which is a good thing IMHO. Airborne is my all time favorite Joe. Love the fact that they gave him ESP in the cartoon and was voiced by Peter Cullen 😅
Another well-deserved feature. I only bought Quick Kick at the old market across the grade school in '87. Those now-classic Pursuit of Cobra figures were difficult to get even today. Would you look forward to seeing "Multo" as an action figure or cancel your him, too?
Thank you! I DO like the idea of a Pinoy Joe but to be honest nothing really got me excited over Multo. I mean visually he looked normal and I couldn't tell you what his specialty was. I dunno it seemed more like a gimmick to me. That being said...if he came out in Classified of course ill get him 😅
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf I only have issue no. 283 for the appearance, and I agree with you that the character is a random “Juan” with no Spirit or a Quick Kick to win me over. From what I’ve been reading stuff on socials it was some fan who sent an idea to Larry Hama and cobbled up this character. But I might be mistaken. “Multo” is nothing but hype with no substance. Every Joe character is a stand out other than his name. He’s more like a canon fodder waiting to be killed off.
@MarkCerbo yeah and that fact that he's called Multo is kind of like an inside joke that only Pinoys would understand. I mean even if a foreigner translates, "ghost" is a rather generic name 😅 but was he featured beyond that one issue? Done anything significant since?
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelfthe character is still alive appearing in issue no. 309 published now by Image Comics. The ARAH series is not connected to the Energon Universe. But there is going to be a new GI joe no. 1 by October/November after the Destro and Scarlett mini-series ends and it is connected to the Energon Universe.
@MarkCerbo pk that's good to know that he carried over. Hopefully Hama does something interesting with him and he's not forgotten. I've been reading the Energon Universe stuff and it's been pretty interesting. So I'm definitely in on both TFs and Joes 👍
Spirit is dressed in a U.S. Cavalry shirt " he resembles native trackers who were from allied tribes with the Cavalry in Frontier times." and Quick Kick let's be honest he's modled after Bruce Lee.
No.they were shown as equals just like the females on the team were.they may have had something stereotypical in job or appearance but that was never intended to be an issue.their skills as soldiers were what the team needed.
I think if they had made Spirit different from how he was portrayed in the cartoon that would have been disrespectful. Spirit was treated by his fellow Joes as both an equal and the voice of thoughtful reason in situations. I always thought of him as a kid as someone I would have gone to for advice and I think that is a good thing.
Honestly, no. It has been proven many time that characters that started off as unfortunate or outdated stereotype can still work within modern time, just with a few or more good changes or update. Spirit and Quick Kick are no exception. Spirit I can see toning down a bit on the whole Native American stereotype ( Which I think part of the video shown here perfectly captures that ) while Quick Kick I can see him being the same from the cartoon, since he was kinda funny and memorable. Just give him some shoes and giving him some good movie references that won't be outdated or cringe, and he'll fit right in. Also, Quick Kick is one of my favorite Gi Joe. Bonus point for him being voice by a fellow Cambodian. That's neat.
Yup at the end of the day I don't believe their stereotype designs were done maliciously. In fact they wanted to be as inclusive and diverse as possible I believe and I think they did am admirable job at other given the times :)
But why? Why cancel any representation these people have. Its ridiculous. Some of us like having Aunt Jemima and they took that away from us too. It is insulting to think someone has to be offended by stereotypes. the audience is smart enough to not need their hand held.
completely agree! The world was a better place when we could all acknowledge our differences without getting offended and just focus and uplift the good in every culture. Stereotypes per se aren't bad IMHO...it's all about the intent and context.
Both are great Characters. I never considered the stereotypes as a kid because I thought they were both really cool characters. The Brazilian version of Spirit released in the 80’s gave him a more ethic look. That is my favorite version of Spirit in 3 3/4. The classified version of Spirit was in conjunction with the Native American community. I’m of Arab decent and find Carbombya to be funny. Also in one of the episodes Barbecue call an Arab a camel jockey. I laugh at that all the time.
Yeah at the end of the day I don't believe that there was any malice involved with all these depictions in the 80s. Its up to us to give the benefit of the doubt, or at the very least not get instantky offended. I need to check out that Spirit you mentioned. I found it funny how the vintage figure had a light skin tone . Did they adjust that with the Brazilian one?
While I love ad own both characters in many incarnations, I have never understood why GI Joe never had any Chinese characters... They seem to have lumped all the "asian" ones as just Japanese, to which I always found amusing as being from the America, there are more Chinese Americans than Japanese. Just found it strange. And to my Chinese friends as well. None of use saw the the "minority" Joes as ever being exhibited poorly, and as you've stated, all the female, African, Native, Latino, and Japanese American characters have always been shown as really good at their jobs and damn effective Joes. Ironically, Airborne was done really dirty in the cartoon as he was drawn as a Caucasian with "powers" and his little brother was drawn as Native with more "powers"... Whereas Spirit, was never portrayed with any "Indian tropes" really. Excellent video bro! Now we need a Filipino, Samoan, and Caribbean Joes :D
I think a main reason was I believe Larry Hama is Japanese American? I could be wrong. But in any case a big part of G.I.Joe is tied into the whole ninja arashikage thing which is Japanese. So it would follow that a lot of Asians introduced would be Japanese. I actually loved that Airborne had Esp in the cartoon...at least it made him unique....im more upset over them not using him more often :) and at least Filipinos got a shout out in Torpedos filecard as he was an expert with the Filipino butterfly knife or balisong 👍
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Yeah brother... I am sure you are correct. Torpedo was also cool because he was polynesian being Hawaiian :D But as you stated and I reaffirmed, the "Minorities" were treated very well in the GI Joe cartoon of the 80s. And being a descendant of Native Caribbean (Taino Indian), I found that great!
@Sturmvapor technically they were minorities but in every other way all of them were equals 👍👍👍 cool on your heritage! Now I want to read up more on it 😉
Thanks Matt always appreciate the support. I think the fact that you didn't think nothing of these two was a good thing. Race wasn't an issue they were just a couple of real American Heroes 👍
I have absolutely zero original figures left. I sold off most of my collection as kid...around 30plus figs for 300 pesos just so I could buy a couple of mini RCs 😅
Yeah essentially the cartoons and comics were there to sell toys so when toys got discontinued their characters were oftentimes killed off. Especially TFs. Oh well still great stuff 👍
So it's up to fans like us to fight the wokeness. Thankfully it hasn't reached the level of silliness that would affect characters like Spirit and Quick Kick. And the tide seems to be turning or at least normalising. 👍
To be honest I never liked Quick Kick in either the comic/cartoon/or toyline. In his debut in G. I. Joe #45, he had some gall to cast aspersions at the outfits of both Snake-Eyes and Spirit Iron Knife. Some nerve given HIS field outfit- the Dreadnoks dress more decently. In the cartoons, kids were to Believe he can actually take on AND defeat Storm-Shadow! Good thing Marvel Comics' G. I. Joe #52 had Larry Hama show Storm-Shadow making very short work of him (I think Lady Jaye would've lasted longer, and I Don't like Lady J). In the cartoons he was more or less a Jackie Chan wannabe, always a smartmouth. A shame too given that Larry Hama gave him the first name of MacArthur, after US General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, a double play as Quick Kick's Japanese-Korean. In both Japan & South Korea, General MacArthur remains well regarded as he served as SCAP (Supreme Commander Allied Powers) for Japan after their surrender that ended World War II. In effect, he was Military Governor with all the powers of a head of state and helped introduce democracy to Japan as well as modernize it. When the Korean War broke out, Gen. MacArthur planned the brilliantly executed amphibious landing at Inchon that broke the back of the North Korean Army. Spirit Iron Knife was a far better character; his outfit was well thought out in the comics and Larry Hama integrated his being a Native American as best he can in the comics. Spirit first appeared in G. I. Joe #31, teamed up with Airborne (G. I. Joe's first Native American member who debuted in G. I. Joe #11, along with Doc, Snow Job, and Will Bill) to keep an eye on Snake-Eyes. Spirit was well developed as a character. In the comics he was paired with Mutt and his figure was refitted to be a member of Sgt. Slaughter's Marauders. His outfit's well thought out and he wasn't shown for laughs. How could either be called 'racist representation' to begin with? One of Hasbro's 1980s G. I. Joe lines strengths was that each Joe was allowed to sport individual outfits. Calling either racist is absurd. What's next, Stalker's past as an urban street warlord gives the wrong message to kids? Lady J's attire is sexist? A PC attitude is so wrong.
Thanks for the extensive info on both! Appreciate the effort 👍 I agree quick kick is....an acquire taste and is not for everyone and his uniform or lack of one is one of the more divisive issues with the character. But being Asian I'm generally good with Quick Kick. And being Filipino I am very familiar with Gen Macarthur as he led the US in liberating us from Japanese occupation :) and yes PC attitude IS so overblown. And I back your sentiment that Larry Hama and Co are FAR from racist and instead brought out the best in the different nationalities represented in GI Joe with classic characters like Spirit...although my favorite would be Airborne :)
good topic bro I feel pretty much like you, a celebration of difference, and a much greater look for my team I was so happy to find Spirit, he looks just fab! in my favs for sure. in class, I did nt get quick kick, I m limiting to 20 agents, 82 - 83+ and I like an 80% green team for a military look. nah, removing the cultures s distinction for negative excuses will not do 80s were masculine + polarity dominating, positive now, there s too much - polarity, feminine, negative, it s simple science love is alternate current, chemistry - power! Thank you! If anything, G.I.Joe back in the 80s were pretty diverse and consistent including at least one female per side and multiple diverse characters every year. Some may say that these were just token characters, but they were really great ones, well fleshed out and developed...I would argue some of the more memorable and iconic ones! All those people who just bring up the negative are just making noise for teh sake of making it. And good luck with your Classified collecting...I too tried to keep my collection focused on the earlier years as well...and a few days ago I just got myself an Arctic BAT 😅 so yeah....I'm mostly all in now 🤣

No!, they should not be canceled!. Gi Joe was about the team, no matter religion, background, race, or nationally. You do know both characters are based on real people? Every person comes from a culture that has an identity that can be stereotyped. Stereotyping is a mental shortcut everyone uses but a person needs to recognize not everyone fits a mold. The US Military is one of the most diverse places on the earth and no one really sheds their past nor the home culture, anyone who needs to "rebrand" characters on media needs to lighten up and except people are going to be different and not fit social norms.
Well said! So true about the mental shortcut. More often than not, there is no malice intended, and usually what is brought to attention are the positive traits. I'm also aware that when coming up with the filecards and personalities of the Joes, Hama did draw on personalities...and sometimes actual names of people he knew in real life...especially real soldiers he served with, which I think adds a deeper dimension and sense of appreciation to all the "characters" in G.I.Joe that many 80's cartoons don't have.
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf I do believe Quick-Kick is Bruce Lee, there was a ton of tongue in cheek humor that was for adults of the time that was over kid's heads. I know was just watching it for the Pew PEW but now I notice the Production that went into the show. You know all the artwork was done in Japan?! Thier was character development (Corba Commander wasn't that much of a coward, usually his subordinates tried to backstab right at their moment of triumph) Anyway what I really hate about GI Joe is that no one ever dies. War is Hell and if you're going to sell war toys it should be a part of the narrative. Impractical Vehicles always bothered me as well. But I regress GI Joe doesn't have a race problem
@@PatrickYule-u9j Yup I do agree that there was a little bit of subtle adult humor inserted here and there that flew over our heads as kids, which gives the cartoon a little more charm when re watched as an adult :) I believe the "no death" things was a strict mandate from the higher ups...hence the parachutes from exploding planes and so on...I mean yes its war, but it was aimed at kids. The comics is where all the death was at though....while still meant for younger readers, Hama didn't shy away from more adult themes in the comics. If you wanted dead joes...and cobras...you read the comics 👍
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Hama himself said himself it was a crime against humanity not to include death. TBF they did have death in a few episodes (the parallel dimension one war Baroness was a good girl comes to mind) AS a huge history buff and former military man myself I appreciate realism or at least a make-believe world staying true to its own physics. But yeah, when that Freaking S.A.W. Viper opened upon the joes in the trench, it was brutal, and it I felt every one of those deaths. That whole arc was wonderful how the Joes set off on a Raid with 4 vehicles and just wrecked a bunch of empty Terrodroms only to get attacked by a whole Cobra Armour and mechanized group. Then the trench mess happens the few remaining Joes escape and get rescued by a Space Drop. EPIC!!
@user-ij6ol9me3o I specifically remember the side story of Dusty and Sneak Peek and how Dusty promised SP's mother that he would bring home his body should he be KIA. And he did. Carrying SPs dead body on his back all the way back to safety. That was such a powerful moment for me to read as a kid.
Well most third world middle eastern dictators did act like facadi. So he was accurate in his role. Are all mid eastern people like facadi? Obviously NOT. But, facadi was not an average mid eastern person. He was a crazy dictator! He makes fun of dictators NOT mid eastern people!
Yeah I'm sure there was no malice involved with the writers who made up facadi....but regardless it had unfortunate results with Kasem getting offended. I personally don't think it was overboard but I can't fault Kasem for feeling the way he felt 👍
I'm reminded of what the actor for Steve Urkel said when he was voiced Sonic the Hedgehog, "I was going to make him a hero first..." And that is the best way for anyone who is a hero to be portrayed, and the same thing goes for the villains, race should not matter, but it's the evil woke devils that would cry out for equality and then cry racist when they make a pair of heroes like Quick Kick the movie stuntman and Spirit Iron Knife the Honorable Warrior.
Exactly and that's what Larry Hama got right. Yes he wanted the team to be representative of all Americans regardless of culture and skin color, but at the end of the day he never lost focus on the fact that regardless of their differences, they were all just REAL AMERICAN HEROES 👍👍👍
No, like I said it's for a lack of a better word. What I meant was that before the days of Internet and so on we were less connected with people from around the world. So stereotypes and limited knowledge of different cultures from different countries were more common. At least that's how I see it. Not that people were less intelligent back then, just less informed due to lack of resources available to us. And yes i do recognize that this is a major generalisation....and also an opinion. 👍👍👍
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf we were not less connected, if anything we are less connected now because of mass propaganda, I’m native and most everything that non natives say we are offended of is totally untrue
@laksivrak2203 fair but what I meant by being less connected was that we didn't have access to as much information as we have now thanks to the Internet....I mean yes there is a wholenlot of false information out there but again I'm just referring to access to resources. Case in point, one commenter mentioned to me that he was of Taino decent. I had never heard of such a culture and so I just opened up another tab and googled it and just like that I got all the relevant information I needed. Yes back in thebday there were encyclopedias and libraries, but the ease of obtaining information is just incomparable to today. That's all I meant. Today we have more access to more information as compared to before. So it was easier to just identify cultures we weren't so familiar with in stuff like toys and cartoon characters by using common stereotypes. 👍👍👍
Ha ha I'm not American so I wasn't exposed to all the controversy around the confederate flag. Now that I know more, that was a ballsy move on their part to give him what looked like a confederate flag on his belt buckle 😅

@@Sturmvapor I believe they finally gave him winter gear in the 87 movie . But that debut in the snow with the leopard seals....CLASSIC!
Quick kick had one of the coolest file cards which won me over to him as a kid.
Nice! For me it was his awesome card art that won me over...that and his designation as Silent Weapons 👍👍👍
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Definitely they didn't understand Snake Eyes with that movie. They saw an action flick and slapped G.I. Joe on it.
@pauljoyner4338 and hired a good looking Asian when what they should have dibe was get a skilled fighter. Although the guy who played Storm Shadow was awesome. Have you seen his show Warrior? Excellent show!

@@pauljoyner4338 im not that far age wise from you so I feel ya. But in any case it's a great show :)
Quick Kick, and Spirit were some of my favorite characters, as a kid.
I never got Spirit but Quick Kick was definitely a fav!
I think if they're well defined and well written characters most people don't mind. I think the classified versions are a good indication of how to handle them in the future, by not going overboard with cliches, but allowing them to keep their identies in tact.
Completely agree. At the end of the day their creation came from a place of wanting to make cool and interesting characters. No malice intended! 👍👍👍
Yup I believe you're correct on both counts 👍👍👍
No.they were shown as equals just like the females on the team were.they may have had something stereotypical in job or appearance but that was never intended to be an issue.their skills as soldiers were what the team needed.
Agree. Their ethnicity wasn't an issue. At the end of the day they were all highly skilled real American Heroes! 👍👍👍
Quick kick and Spirit are my two favorite Joe's!👍🏽
Two of the best!
I think if they had made Spirit different from how he was portrayed in the cartoon that would have been disrespectful. Spirit was treated by his fellow Joes as both an equal and the voice of thoughtful reason in situations. I always thought of him as a kid as someone I would have gone to for advice and I think that is a good thing.
completely agree! Spirit was one of the wisest and more naturally accomplished members of the team. I only wish he was used more 👍
Honestly, no.
Cancel roadblock, that's the biggest stereotype
Aww but who will cook all those gourmet meals for the Joes? 👍
Not sure but they SHOULD DEFINITELY cancel that Transformers X G.I. Joe crossover movie 😬
Ha ha fair, theirtrack record for live action Joes hasn't been ...great, but I'll give it a shot. But that's just me ....the perennial optimist 😅
Actually. Cliffjumper and Bluestreak were likely going to be retired anyway as their toys were being retired.
Yes true...but it still was a premature retirement that could have been avoided. 👍
Torpedo was also cool because he was polynesian being Hawaiian :D
But as you stated and I reaffirmed, the "Minorities" were treated very well in the GI Joe cartoon of the 80s. And being a descendant of Native Caribbean (Taino Indian), I found that great!
@Sturmvapor technically they were minorities but in every other way all of them were equals 👍👍👍 cool on your heritage! Now I want to read up more on it 😉
Well that was freakin awesome! I had both as a kid and didnt think nothing of it. Just loved having Joes. Man youre freakin awesome!

Quick Kick: No Shirt No Shoes No Service!🤣!
Awwww poor Quick Kick....give the man some shoes!
1:50 - You forgot Roadblock! 😁
He came in after the 2nd year :) but yeah one of the most iconic Joes 👍👍👍

Make Spirit, and Quick Kick albino dwarf transexuals. 👍
😬😬😬
You call the 80’s less educated??
