  • 00:00 - 04:10 Is the assembly of the cnc machine.
    04:10 - 06:42 I install and use the free software GCAM to create an .nc file to be printed. There are many other good cam software out there. I like GCAM because you can create files or load in svg or gerber files, or import a png image.
    06:42 - 07:05 - Make sure to really tighten the small black bolts. The vibrations could cause them to unscrew and the bit to fall out which you dont want to happen.
    07:05 - 07:20 I chose basswood for this first print because it is soft. Harder wood would be better but it is more expensive and could be harder to cut if your settings aren't right.
    07:26 everything you see at this frame is provided in this cnc kit. The L corner brackets I bought at a hardware store for about 2 dollars. I use them as clamps to hold down the wood but you could use any kind of clamp that would work.
    07:54 - 09:11 I am installing grbl Control. The free software to send .nc or gcode files to the cnc machine. Go to settings and hit the refresh so the software can find the right usb slot the cnc machine is plugged into.ALWAYS remember to clear the X,Y,and Z before printing so the printer knows where you want the origin to be.
    This printer goes by many names online so here is what mine was called and here is the wiki to the exact model I have.
    CNC Printer: "DIY CNC 3 Axis Engraver Machine PCB Milling"
    Some assembly steps are found in this link at the bottom.

    A much easier means of inserting those rectangular nuts into the aluminum rails - instead of using tweezers, put the all the bolts needed through the piece you are attaching, then start the nuts. Align the nuts with the slot in the aluminum rails, push them straight in. As you begin tightening the bolts, the nuts will make a 1/4 turn and lock into place. Continue tightening as needed.

    Great video. I have this same milling machine that I purchased from Amazon. I created the same file in GCAM following your video with the same settings and exported it as an NC file When I opened in GRBL and told it to begin, my Y axis will travel too far to the left. where I have to pull the power cord. I've tried resetting all of my axis and it will affect another axis. Is there any special trick to calibrating the axis? I've tried printing the NC demo files and my Z axis doesn't want to touch my foam core that I'm using. Thanks

    • @3DSage
      @3DSage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh sorry to hear that. Sounds like it could be a unit problem. Make sure you are using millimeters 4:52. Check if your 3 axis are not mixed up and move the same way mine does at 8:35. And zero out the machine 8:57. At 9:08, look in the left side numbers. Before you run the machine, you can see the file limits so make sure your numbers match mine. I can't think of anything else so after trying that let me know if that works. If not, maybe someone else reading this might have a few ideas. Thank you for your comment. Hope you get it working.

      Thank you for the tip! I also wonder another thing: have you tried to install limit switches and/or probing to the machine? I'm about to do that right now, and I think it's pin A5 for probing, which should be recognised by GBRL Control. But I'm more unsure about limit switches.

    • @3DSage
      @3DSage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't tried limit switches but that might be a good video to make. I will have to learn about that. Let me know if you get it working and what you had to do. Thank you.

    • @mikaelbjornson2666
      @mikaelbjornson2666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      3DSage Already did :). It's perfectly simple. You just glue on micro switches at the end points and wire them to the rows of jumpers on the pcb. You connect the low row (all pins are GND) through the switches to the ones labelled "Zen", "Xen" and "Yen" respectively. Then, in GBRLControl, you write $21=1 in the command module to activate the switches. They stay activated even if you turn off the machine.
      These are the configuration codes if you wish to do more tweaking: github.com/grbl/grbl/wiki/Configuring-Grbl-v0.9
      With the switches hooked up like that you can also activate "Homing cycle", which makes the machine search for the end switches when you turn it on. This makes it able to map the workspace and determine its ACTUAL position at every given time.
      Next tweak will be the height probing. This makes a topographic map of the stock face and adjusts Z- height at runtime accordingly. Perfect for pcb milling!

      My second option would have been Easel. It's free and runs in your browser and looks very easy to use. I kind of liked gsimple but its not user friendly. I saw some people use illustrator or Inkscape and export with plugins. There are many options out there I haven't tried or don't know about so If anyone reading this can add recommendation that would be great. Thank you!

      There are lots of variations of these cnc machines. The link I provided should be the same I show in this video. You might want to see if they did send you the wrong machine but it could be pretty much the same but with a larger milling area so I dont't know if that is what you want to have or not.

      Search ebay for "cnc engraving bits." Make sure the diameter is 3.175mm. They come in different metal and v-shaped degrees so it might take a little more research depending on what you want to do but this should point you in the right direction.

      I'm no expert but I believe the numerical xyz coordinates and speed are stored in the gcode file and that file is read by the grbl controller software. That grbl software communicates directly to your cnc machine via usb.

    I too must thank you so much for this excellent tutorial video! Was stuck seemingly forever incapable of being able to utilize the Link Sprite CNC Engraver as I was unable to find/figure out what program would properly convert Fritzing Gerber files into G Code that could then be sent over to engraver, thanks once again! Very easy to follow tutorial. However, I do have one question...
    it seems Fritzing converts trace paths into usable RS274X files which can then be converted for engraver/router but fails to produce a usable drill pattern file!! The drill file is a .txt extension file!!?! Please help, as I am so close to finally achieving what I set out to do so many hours ago...
    So I guess my question here is if there is any way to produce or import from Fritzing a drill file to punch holes in the trace patterns that the engraver can then cut out of PCB??!
    With more thanks once again and in advance,
    DC.

    • @3DSage
      @3DSage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ran into the same problem. Drill holes seem to be a real pain. I switched to expresspcb and wrote my own software to read position data and save it in the format gcam likes but its not the best solution. I hear Eagle can export the drill holes but its not user friendly. You could also search for better cad and cam software instead of the ones I show that are free and easy to use but limited in options. Good luck and feel free to post your solution to help others on here.

    Very well done video. I've ordered one of these for small PCB prototying, and other small jobs. I have a larger CNC machine that I built that runs using GRBL and I have some other CAM tools that I have used with that. But I thought GCAM looked interesting, but it looks like it is a bit of a dead project. I haven't been able to get it to configure under Linux Mint 18 and the build instructions are a bit sketchy and it appears that the last changes were done about 3 years ago. I suppose I could hold my nose and try to run the Windoze binary on my rarely used Windows machine, but I would prefer to run it on Linux. Has anyone had any success building GCAM on newer versions of Linux, and if so how did you do it?

    • @burtbicksler1676
      @burtbicksler1676 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I found the issue, at least it now configures and is building. I thought everything was installed but I was missing the open gl library, which wasn't immediately clear from the autoreconf error message. So it has finished building and runs under Linux Mint 18.x

    • @3DSage
      @3DSage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you got it working. That's good to know for anyone else with the same issue. Correct, gcam has not been updated in a few years but there are many other cam options out there. I still like and use gcam but if you find a better one please let us know. Thank you!

If 1 axis is still grey, then I think that mean the cable is not fully plugged in on the machine. Make sure to follow the video closely. Let me know if you get it working.
