Five weeks after I started I didn’t only see a difference in my eye wrinkles but felt it (skin felt like it was being pulled taut from the inside). About a year later, My weak brittle nails that I’ve always had were replaced with much stronger nails. The difference was so dramatic (in my eye wrinkles and nails), that I will never NOT take these supplements. (Having people comment that I look 15 years younger than my 52 years is also awesome). I like that I start my morning with 6 gr of protein too). Thanks for another great video! 🙏🏻
I had an anal fistula for some years. It was gradually getting bigger to a point where with touching with a finger I could literally feel a round hole under the skin just next to my back passage , where "flesh" was missing. It was also cosmetically visible, skin colour had changed etc but still dry - drops of bleeding sometimes. Lots of my own research and it became clear that it was a fistula, and apparently, once it was there "usually the only way" to treat it permanently was surgery. Apparently this was an inevitable outcome, but surgery also did not mean 100% success rate, as it could re/form elsewhere etc. Then I started taking a mix of collagen+ whey protein daily - actually for an entirely different reason. Within a few weeks, magic was happening.. the hole and swelling were slowly disappearing. Shortly after this time,, my hospital appointment came up and did an MRI scan. The surgeon called me back and told me that indeed there WAS a fistula x cm deep etc BUT it was healed! The MRI could see where it formerly was but there was no hole any more, it was completely closed and healed now!!! "That is what the MRI shows", he said. I was in disbelief. Then I thought about it later and smiled when I come up with the reason for the "magic". I still continue taking the collagen daily (when I remember!), and several months later, even cosmetically, the place of the fistula is no longer visible and it has completely healed. I am certain that collagen saved me having a surgery with an uncertain outcome and ended more fistula forming... when I look back, it worked fast and effectively. There is no other reason that I can think about for that miracle apart from the collagen ( the whey protein too maybe- but I was taking a small/ maybe negligible amount of this - I don't know.. ?).
I'm a 55 year old active male, who was diagnosed with CAM type FAI this year. Along with other reasonably priced supplements like vitamins and glucosamine, I've been taking 2 teaspoons of pure gelatin in my daily protein smoothie. I've heard good things about gelatin for osteoarthritis, and it's really affordable. What's your take, Docs?

Supplement companies don't benefit from paying for expensive studies to prove a non proprietary product works, while drug manufacturers are actually hurt by such studies rather than helped because of the same non proprietary nature and low price of the supplements.
I'm really enjoying your videos as they are informative and entertaining. I'd not heard of "matcha tea" before seeing it in the comments here. When I looked it up on Google it says that matcha contains a high level of caffeine. In the video about bone density, you said to avoid caffeine for strong bones so why is it good? Thank you!
So caffeine itself is not bad for your bones but drinking caffeine with a meal where you are trying to absorb calcium is counter productive. Matcha is a very concentrated form of green tea and has all of its benefits like inflammation reduction and anti oxidants
I had taken collagen for a couple of months and just ran out. I had been thinking about whether I wanted to repurchase or not. While listening to your video, I evaluated whether I saw a difference in anything and I do not. I think I will save my money. Thanks for the info.
Something improved my bone density scan. I showed some changes; I took action. So over the 2 years or whatever it was until I scanned again, I began taking collagen powder every morning in my smoothie, and tried to increase my protein intake since I rarely eat meat. I was already exercising, weight training, running and have for many years. Next scan showed improvement. I also notice less stiffness in my hands--it was getting rather bad but during that time it improved. I quit taking the powder for a while thinking it was a fluke, and over time stiffness came back. Started again, stiffness was better. So, I'm going to continue to take it. Isn't hurting me so why not?
Isn't eating meat deliver more amino acids than just collagen? Also protein in vegetables has different % of different amino acids, this could be a problem.
@@Sam9wilson9 Good point I didn't think about! I can't be sure - I was at the same facility but couldn't say if it was the same machine since it was a couple years between scans. But I’ll still take the win anyway lol
@@SuperMrAndersen meat is a good pure source of protein, I just don't each much of it and when I do it's poultry or maybe sometimes canned tuna. I do put whey protein in my smoothies.

I started taking collagen about a year before my scheduled knee replacement. I was not really hoping for any results, just giving something a try. Well after 6 months of taking it, I was walking up and down stairs like a normal person. I almost cancelled the knee replacement surgery. Actually had to talk myself of not calling to do that. Super glad I had the surgery. Do I think the collagen helped. Yup I do. I certainly can see the benefits in my skin and hair. I am now waiting for a shoulder replacement. No amount of collagen is going to fix what is wrong with my shoulder. However, I did try and go without the collagen for a 6 months period and I ended up with all the aches and pains that had gone away in my other joints and my hair was falling out in clumps. Went back on the collagen and within 3 months the aches and pains went away and my hair started growing back. So if it’s all in my head, that is OK with me. I enjoy not having all the aches and pains. Only thing that still really hurts is that shoulder that is waiting for surgery but its problem has nothing to do with tendons.
I was taking collagen powder in my coffee for the past three years and I ran out about a week ago… I’m going to see if it makes any difference. So far none. I like that you’re giving pros and cons. I was diagnosed with osteopenia years ago so it’s possible the collagen improved it? I’ll need a bone scan to see. I run and do weight bearing exercise so how do you tease out which is helping? Thanks for your fun and informative videos!
Thank you, Docs, for yet another well-informed, funny, and lighthearted video. Better watch, your videos are going to upset the drug companies as watching them promote a sense of enjoyment without all the manufacturing costs. Great job, and thanks again!
Homemade chicken soup! Mom's Rx for every disease known to man. (sort of). Good protein & knawing on soft bones gives you collagen and a jaw muscle workout.
So what supplements should one take post joint surgery if any? I am getting my ACL and meniscus repaired and I just bought a calcium supplement, glucosamine and chondroitin, and a collagen peptide supplement. I assume none of it will do any harm, but the idea was to aid in recovery.
What are your thoughts on AlgaeCal supplements for bone building and their Collagen? Claims they have studies to support the claim in addition to taking Strontium ??
I think that when someone takes collagen, they've made an effort to improve their health, and it's often that effort, not whatever supplement that's doing the job. But whichever is the cause, the benefit is there. I appreciate that you're no Dr. Oz, pushing supplements to enhance your wealth!
Weirdly i began taking it collagen 1 from fish sources and maybe it is a coincidence but my weight loss stalled. I also felt more waterlogged than I did not on it.
@TalkingWithDocs No hard Science here but maybe if it hydrates the skin (making it look fuller and less wrinkled as a result) then maybe water retention is what I'm actually feeling? I have eaten the same so the only variable is the collagen 1. I'm off it today so will see if the weight changes...
I've been taking it for 2 years every morning in my coffee, about 4 months again I cut it back to half a scoop. What I've noticed less knee pain (I play and am a goalie) I've noticed hair and nail growth.
I have a Type 1 collagen disorder, a type of Ehlers Danlos, and there's a long list of damaged and broken things in my body because everything is made from collagen🙃 Even if edible collagen was absorbed, genetically, my body still wouldn't make the fibres properly🤦 Something to consider if people have a underlying condition.
Been taking collagen supps for a couple of years now and I've had great results but you have to make sure you aren't missing any of the co-factors, of which there are many. If your body doesn't have the necessary ingredients on hand it just doesn't work. Were the studies controlling the co-factors as well? Collagen synthesis falls off at about 1% per year starting from about your mid-20's, the older you are the faster your collagen degrades. IMO you can't start supplementing early enough, through diet or otherwise. Maybe try some safe cheap micro needling for more troublesome areas or age spots/wrinkles in conjunction with supps. YMMV
I take collagen for joint pain, but I'm not sure it works. That being said, I haven't given it up because I think it might take a long time (a year of more?) for me to be able to perceive a difference. The jury's still out.
I have EDS and my take on collagen supplements is that since the collagen my body produces is crap collagen, and the collagen molecule is broken down anyway, my body uses the new collagen to make more crap collagen. .
My brother is into collagen. He also was one of those claiming it could grow back cartilage and suggested i should eat it for my hip (which i didn´t), i call him MR placebo hehe.. I rarely find that people who eat 5-10 pills of supplements believe in real studies or the clinical effect of it, not sure why but they sure as hell don´t believe in the placebo effect and often doesn´t even know what it means 😁
Personal experience. It has improved my skin condition and overall hydration of the skin. My diet is very poor and deficient in collagen proteins..UC has made it hard to eat or keep foods in. Therefore, a liquid supplement has been easier for me to absorb. I do have and see an improvement in overall health. The proteins are important for me. But, do I have amazing cushions of fluid and super-hydrated cartilage? Amazingly hydrated rubber bands of ligaments? Not really anything amazing. Will enter my 5th decade of life soon and have worked in orthopedics since 1997. I stand 12-16 hours a day. I am lightweight and my joints don't suffer much under the strain of carrying too much weight. I would only get a joint replacement if I were in pain. Joint on joint?!? Omg. Millions of times I have heard it. But, if there is no pain and elderly. Why have a major surgery? My family experiences have told me that if it doesn't hurt then leave it be. It is a major surgery and elective.
I'm one of those people that, out of desperation and pain in my hips, hadn't eaten red meat (cow, pig, lamb etc) since I was 15yrs old. As city folk, my parents decided, in the early 1970's, to quite their jobs (Dad was a VP at GM here in the SF Bay Area) and buy a dairy farm. What I found out is that, #1 - I don't want to meet my dinner before I eat it. #2 - Animals are funny, smart, have personalities and give and receive love...WTHeck??? Let me also add, one of my new best friends I met, their family owned a meat lot and "processing" facility. My first introduction to what is being wrapped up and sold at our big chain supermarkets...now that is enough to make anyone rethink their diet. Anyway, I was having so much pain in my hips and shoulders, I broke down and plugged my nose, closed my mind, and started putting 4scoops (I've no idea what the actual measurement of the collagen was, but I bought all of it from Costco) of collagen in my coffee. I did this for 8 months, plenty of time to see, imo, noticeable difference. It didn't happen for me at all. I hated the taste and it was not cheap, actually quite pricey. I will say this, unlike other folks, after 8 months of adding those extra calories to my diet, already suffering from painful walking, I gained a good 20+ lbs. That collagen has som calories and I was not in shape to add a workout to my day. Thank Go, since then, I've had both hips replaced, and am currently waiting for the right time to have my shoulder replaced. At the end of the day, I"m not sure collagen supplements can trump (I hate using curse words!) bad genes.
Update to my previous comment. I looked more closely at the collagen that I had been taking and compared it to others. I discovered that you are supposed to take 20-40 g per day and the one I was using only had 5. So, I am going to try again with an increased dose and see if that helps. Any suggestions on dosage?
Bone broth is recommended for its nutrients like collagen, amino acids, and minerals that may support joint, gut, and skin health. While there’s limited scientific evidence proving its direct benefits, it can be a nutritious addition to your diet, providing glycine, which helps with digestion and sleep. Many people find it soothing and beneficial for general health.
Did an X-ray prove "bone on bone"? Seriously, it's actually sounds more like a knee injury and, with losing weight, you relieved your symptoms plus tincture of time.

@TalkingWithDocs thank you!
I had taken collagen for a couple of months and just ran out. I had been thinking about whether I wanted to repurchase or not. While listening to your video, I evaluated whether I saw a difference in anything and I do not. I think I will save my money. Thanks for the info.
Thank you. Just saved me lots of money x
I take the bovine powder and one noticeable difference is my fingernails are definitely thicker.
Nice
Did you use the literal exact DEXA machine? Not same brand, same exact machine. Curious here. Thanks !
@@kathrynm5841
I used to drink protein smoothies 10 years ago when I started my journey at the gym. I'm 52 now. And whey protein gave me higher blood pressure (I'm sure about that). So now I'm eating only completely natural food, mainly chicken as a source of protein. I'm sceptical now about any kind of processed food.
I’ve started taking collagen powder with green matcha tea, I don’t believe it will increase collagen etc but I will finish it because I like benefits of the matcha in it. After that won’t waste my $.
Matcha is very good for you
My doc says collagen does zero point zero. Who to believe?
Thank you for your valuable content! What is your take on colostrum for skin, hair and gut?
We will have to look into it
What is best for bones cracking and joint pain
What's the difference between bone broth and collagen? I use collagen and I can definitely say it does make my nails grow hard and fast. I have osteoporosis and I'm waiting for my bone scan in a year.
Love You Guy's!🥰
After taking the powder form for years, I found my skin is silky smooth and cures fast with a cut, how it improves my catiledge on joints I do no know
I've been feeling great and working out every day since I started putting in oatmeal and coffee. Seems to work for something. Only supplement I've noticed do something
I never graduated from collegen , and at 64 years of age and now retired I think I m going to start classes again to see if I can get a college degree. Will taking collegen supplements help ?
Yes
thx a bunch for your videos and the humor , you guys and gals are the best
Only thing that still really hurts is that shoulder that is waiting for surgery but its problem has nothing to do with tendons.
m e as well
If you don't mind me asking, what Collagen (brand name) are you taking? It's obviously working very well for you which is great. Thank you!
@ I’m taking Marine Collagen from a company called Isagenix. Not cheap but right now I think it’s worth it
@@pamelanewton3669 Thank you! Is it the Collagen Elixir (liquid) that you're taking? That's the only Marine Collagen product I see on their website.
@ Yes, that’s the one
I was taking collagen powder in my coffee for the past three years and I ran out about a week ago… I’m going to see if it makes any difference. So far none. I like that you’re giving pros and cons. I was diagnosed with osteopenia years ago so it’s possible the collagen improved it? I’ll need a bone scan to see. I run and do weight bearing exercise so how do you tease out which is helping? Thanks for your fun and informative videos!
It’s very hard to determine the contribution of each without stopping one at a time and checking again. See how it goes Jane. Thanks for watching!
Thank you doctors. Your video are very informative..
Hello, and thank you, do you please have episode talk about Vitamin C?
Thank you, Docs, for yet another well-informed, funny, and lighthearted video. Better watch, your videos are going to upset the drug companies as watching them promote a sense of enjoyment without all the manufacturing costs. Great job, and thanks again!
Do you have a video discussing creatine supplementation?
Homemade chicken soup! Mom's Rx for every disease known to man. (sort of). Good protein & knawing on soft bones gives you collagen and a jaw muscle workout.
I know collagen works for my skin. So it proves it works for the knees too! 😊
Can’t we just like…measure that instead of „feelings“
@ I agree!
@@ThrivewithArthritis the only thing I know of that’s effective is retinol
@ it’s good to know! I’ve tried it before and hear good things about it!
Thanks guys.
Here in South Texas, many people eat fried pig skins, aka
chicharrones. Love your videos!
Yuck😂😂😂bone broth works
Oh wow! Thanks for watching
I LOVE pig skin!!!
My husband takes ponder, is that good?
So What u suggestions knee pain & plenty wrinkles..???
It’s a very personal decision
I stopped taking collagen over 2 years ago when moved to 100% whole food plant based; I did see vegan collagen in health-stores- what is it then?
Collagen builder.
does it do the job at all?
Weirdly i began taking it collagen 1 from fish sources and maybe it is a coincidence but my weight loss stalled. I also felt more waterlogged than I did not on it.
Hmmm
@TalkingWithDocs No hard Science here but maybe if it hydrates the skin (making it look fuller and less wrinkled as a result) then maybe water retention is what I'm actually feeling? I have eaten the same so the only variable is the collagen 1. I'm off it today so will see if the weight changes...
Hell yes, this was a huge deal for me
I got tryptophan before it was answered!!!
Congratulations!!!🎉
What about possible side effects? Are there any?
Other than possible allergy or heavy metal not really
I've been taking it for 2 years every morning in my coffee, about 4 months again I cut it back to half a scoop. What I've noticed less knee pain (I play and am a goalie) I've noticed hair and nail growth.
That’s awesome
Do you think collagen can make Dupuytrens worse? I can’t find any literature to support it either way.
YMMV
Thanks for sharing. Not sure about the cofactors
I take collagen for joint pain, but I'm not sure it works. That being said, I haven't given it up because I think it might take a long time (a year of more?) for me to be able to perceive a difference. The jury's still out.

You think Collagen supplements might help diabetics? Considering there is a lot of interference in nutrient absorption due the medication.
What about jello?
Is there such a thing as marine collagen? UK
Yes there is
I’m in Canada and buy marine collagen from a company called Landish.
it's just so fun to watch your conversation, 7% elasticity and 10% of error. 🤣
Can you do a segment on EDS and the effects it has on collagen?
I have EDS and my take on collagen supplements is that since the collagen my body produces is crap collagen, and the collagen molecule is broken down anyway, my body uses the new collagen to make more crap collagen. .
Hello, good time. On average, how many grams of collagen does the body need per day for a healthy person?
Why are doctors pessimistic about collagen ?

I get my collagen from the bone broth I make.
Thank you for sharing your story
Update to my previous comment. I looked more closely at the collagen that I had been taking and compared it to others. I discovered that you are supposed to take 20-40 g per day and the one I was using only had 5. So, I am going to try again with an increased dose and see if that helps. Any suggestions on dosage?
What about bone broth. It was recommended to me by an acupuncturist. Any thoughts?
Bone broth is recommended for its nutrients like collagen, amino acids, and minerals that may support joint, gut, and skin health. While there’s limited scientific evidence proving its direct benefits, it can be a nutritious addition to your diet, providing glycine, which helps with digestion and sleep. Many people find it soothing and beneficial for general health.
what's the difference of Collagen 2 & 4?
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hello doctor..iam male 44..my legs macal and hand macal so week ask me some supplements
Did an X-ray prove "bone on bone"? Seriously, it's actually sounds more like a knee injury and, with losing weight, you relieved your symptoms plus tincture of time.
Would this help with tennis elbow pain?
