    I have been taking a collagen powder in my coffee every morning for about 6 months now. I can't say that I have noticed any big difference. I am 72. I have also increased my protein and fiber intake for the past few months. I think I will stop with the collagen powder and see if I notice anything different. Thank you for this video. I appreciate hearing from real Docs.

    I was having bad knee pain to the point I couldn't sleep at night. Bone on bone. Out of desperation I tried 30 grams of collagen a day and after 6 weeks the pain was almost gone. 5 years ago and still not having surgery. If someone thinks it's a placebo then I say fine. Whatever. The pain went away. This motivated me to lose weight and after a year I dropped 100 lbs. Im sure that is what kept it going. But I still take the collagen. The pain relief was quite profound for me.

    Something improved my bone density scan. I showed some changes; I took action. So over the 2 years or whatever it was until I scanned again, I began taking collagen powder every morning in my smoothie, and tried to increase my protein intake since I rarely eat meat. I was already exercising, weight training, running and have for many years. Next scan showed improvement. I also notice less stiffness in my hands--it was getting rather bad but during that time it improved. I quit taking the powder for a while thinking it was a fluke, and over time stiffness came back. Started again, stiffness was better. So, I'm going to continue to take it. Isn't hurting me so why not?

      Isn't eating meat deliver more amino acids than just collagen?
      Also protein in vegetables has different % of different amino acids, this could be a problem.

    I'm a 55 year old active male, who was diagnosed with CAM type FAI this year. Along with other reasonably priced supplements like vitamins and glucosamine, I've been taking 2 teaspoons of pure gelatin in my daily protein smoothie. I've heard good things about gelatin for osteoarthritis, and it's really affordable. What's your take, Docs?

    You docs are great. I just deleted this long TMI about my own journey & what’s worked to keep this ol’ woman, seemingly healthy, fit, good muscle mass, energy, cognition, sex drive, increased my bones from osteoporosis to osteopenia & i hope for more improvement. I’m an RN in a snf where a lot of the patients are now younger than me with horrible health-So many amputations r/t T2DM, osteomyelitis with of potent IV antibiotics. Post sepsis from PNA & UTI’s(mostly women here). I’d love to feel free to have a discussion, but again TMI. Good show. So much snake oil out there, & then there’s those things/medications that can deliver that most docs won’t touch-like Ritalin to get a depressed woman who has an amputation the energy to eat, get out of bed, work with therapy, & go home again with her husband. So peace out, & this is much shorter than my original over sharing. 😂

    I'm really enjoying your videos as they are informative and entertaining.
    I'd not heard of "matcha tea" before seeing it in the comments here.
    When I looked it up on Google it says that matcha contains a high level of caffeine. In the video about bone density, you said to avoid caffeine for strong bones so why is it good?
    Thank you!

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  38 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      So caffeine itself is not bad for your bones but drinking caffeine with a meal where you are trying to absorb calcium is counter productive. Matcha is a very concentrated form of green tea and has all of its benefits like inflammation reduction and anti oxidants

I like that you’re giving pros and cons. I was diagnosed with osteopenia years ago so it’s possible the collagen improved it? I’ll need a bone scan to see. I'm one of those people that, out of desperation and pain in my hips, hadn't eaten red meat (cow, pig, lamb etc) since I was 15yrs old. As city folk, my parents decided, in the early 1970's, to quite their jobs (Dad was a VP at GM here in the SF Bay Area) and buy a dairy farm. What I found out is that, #1 - I don't want to meet my dinner before I eat it. #2 - Animals are funny, smart, have personalities and give and receive love...WTHeck??? Let me also add, one of my new best friends I met, their family owned a meat lot and "processing" facility. My first introduction to what is being wrapped up and sold at our big chain supermarkets...now that is enough to make anyone rethink their diet. Anyway, I was having so much pain in my hips and shoulders, I broke down and plugged my nose, closed my mind, and started putting 4scoops (I've no idea what the actual measurement of the collagen was, but I bought all of it from Costco) of collagen in my coffee. I did this for 8 months, plenty of time to see, imo, noticeable difference. It didn't happen for me at all. I hated the taste and it was not cheap, actually quite pricey. I will say this, unlike other folks, after 8 months of adding those extra calories to my diet, already suffering from painful walking, I gained a good 20+ lbs. That collagen has som calories and I was not in shape to add a workout to my day. Thank Go, since then, I've had both hips replaced, and am currently waiting for the right time to have my shoulder replaced. At the end of the day, I"m not sure collagen supplements can trump (I hate using curse words!) bad genes.

    Be sure to get enough Glycine, one third of all collagen is made from that one amino acid, they say as you get older the body doesn't make enough and many common protein foods that people consume doesn't contain enough. I take a Glycine supplement and can definitely tell a difference.

    Been taking collagen supps for a couple of years now and I've had great results but you have to make sure you aren't missing any of the co-factors, of which there are many. If your body doesn't have the necessary ingredients on hand it just doesn't work. Were the studies controlling the co-factors as well? Collagen synthesis falls off at about 1% per year starting from about your mid-20's, the older you are the faster your collagen degrades. IMO you can't start supplementing early enough, through diet or otherwise. Maybe try some safe cheap micro needling for more troublesome areas or age spots/wrinkles in conjunction with supps. YMMV
