  • In this video, This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey steps (carefully) outside his normal trade to show us an eco-friendly way to clear overgrown yards: goats with an insatiable appetite.

    Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey shows us a unique approach to landscape clearing. Rather than letting plants overgrow and create fire hazards, Richard introduces us to a non-profit that brings goats to a homeowner’s yard where they clean the brush and create a naturally clean environment (complete with compost!).
    Where to find it?
    Richard partnered with City Grazing [www.citygrazing.org/], a non-profit based out of San Francisco that rents goats to businesses and homeowners for challenging weeding projects. Properties with existing fencing can be done more easily, but properties without fencing can have a temporary fence installed for an additional cost.

    Point of fact: goats prefer browse (shrubs and trees). Sheep prefer forbs (weeds). Cattle prefer grasses. Each will eat browse, forbs and grasses, but they are all specialists, and best chosen for the circumstances...

    Love to see folks using good practices that help the earth, plus you get personality and 24/7 coverage. I lived in a rural area for about 12 years, and you'd see flocks of goats clearing the foliage from the levee roads (too steep to mow, and the process was cool as the humans would just move the fencing further along the road mile by mile.) I liked to see them along the river roads!

    I’ve seen this done before. An excellent win-win for everyone including the goats. They get a variety of vistas, foods, are well treated. The customer gets a quiet, friendly, environmentally beneficial solution to their problem, the neighbors get a pleasant neighbor for a week or so, and the property is improved with zero environmental damage or concerns. Lastly, the goats’ owner gets paid for letting his herd eat for free.

    As a kid growing up on a farm we had 40 goats and we'd take the smaller ones out to the newer neighborhoods and have them eat the grass. It was a good way for us kids to get weekend movie money. Made $1.25 per yard yes it was back in the early 1960's. Movie and snacks cost less than a dollar. I used most of mine going into the city at Radioshack on parts.

      Not if he stays on a schedule of trimming and pruning. That’s 10 years of not doing much and a one week stay by the goats won’t cause things to grow out of control after they leave. But it also won’t eliminate all the work needed to make the property attractive again.

    • @b_uppy
      @b_uppy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because the "canopy" is opened up, more desirable plants will have a change to regrow/get a boost.
      Fighting certain undesirables can be an uphill battle and these goats have done a considerable amount to make it easier to deal with.
      Himalayan blackberries are a bugger with their hooked thorns, so the goats taking taking them down some will help, but they pop back fast...
