Love you Roger. You inspired my mother and father and I. My mother is a landscaper partly because of you. My father is an irrigation specialist and landscaper and owns his own business partly because of you. I worked for them both for 8 years from the age of 15. After serving in the US Air Force I decided, from my love of nature, which was inspired by you, to gain an associates degree in horticulture land systems management, and I'll soon have my multidisciplinary bachelor's degree focused in environmental science with a concentration on geography and planning. Hopefully a lot of good will come from my years to come of hard work, because I watched this old house when I was a child.

Loved seeing Roger. Looking forward to many more episodes, now featuring his "finger pointing." 😊
Would love hear a breakdown of the various foundation systems TOH has used. When and why to consider specific systems.
With concrete a major contributor to green house gas emissions, using two-thirds less than traditional pours is another side benefit to this old house's carbon footprint. Now if the manufacturer could incorporate the zero carbon concrete...
Sidenote: I've been watching TOH since the very beginning! After a career behind a desk to pay the bills while raising a family, I struck out on my own. First as a handyman, then a contractor.
Between DIY projects over 40+ years, and professional projects for the last decade, I can say that I've done pretty much everything from the foundation to the ridge. I love building things every day, and I owe an untolled debt to the entire cast and crew of TOH over all these seasons. Y'all are my heroes.

A very cool and timely episode on renovating a 100 years old house to become net zero! My house was built in 1914. Over the last 10 years, I installed a R29 layer of insulation in the attic ($1,000). The increased interior heat comfort was immediate! I then had R20 insulating foam injected into the perimeter walls greatly reducing outside noise and increasing heat retention ($9,000). I then started removing all the old air ducting, natural gas heater and digging out the entire crawlspace for 2 feet of wiggle room to install R25 floor insulation beneath the whole house one bucket of soil at a time ($3,000). I then installed another layer of R29 in the attic creating R80 of insulation ($1,000). I then had the utility disconnect the natural gas line from the house and bought high efficiency, all electric appliances: stove, fridge, water heater, washing machine and TV. I then had a 3.35 kilowatt SunPower roof top solar pv system installed on my south facing garage roof. It produces 6,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually ($15,000). I built and installed a 3 foot by 6 foot solar heater for my outside wall of my bedroom. It outputs 140 F of heat every sunny day. I then dug out all the old cast iron plumbing from beneath the house to under the garage and to the city sewer line. I had the plumbers install all new black plastic ABS sewer pipe from 2 showers and bath tub, 2 toilets and 3 sinks to the city sewer line ($5,500). I then turned off the city water and dug up the old outside water line and replaced it with blue and red PEX piping with shut off taps ($1,000). The next year, again I turned off the city water and cut out all the old copper and galvantized steel water lines under the house and had the plumber replace them all again with blue and red PEX plastic water lines ($3,000). Last year I installed a 80 sqft thermal mass electric heated tiled floor. It provides the best heat I have ever experienced: silent, even, warm on my toes and renewably powered ($1,000). This year I am hoping to install similar thermal floors in the living, library and garage's guest room room. While I still have 17 single pane windows, all 106 years old, in the house...I do not want to change them out because of their design character and the cost could be $30,000 and not worth it to me. I now have a renewably powered 106 year old strong house that essentially heats and cools itself with lots of original design character combined with high insulation and high efficiency and thermal mass for heating and cooling keeping us warm and comfort in all seasons with an annual electricity bill of $200.

Because I watched WGBH Boston soooo much as a kid growing up,I was turned onto this old house.I was watching Dr. Who and 321 contact at about 12 years old when the ads for their brand new show, this old House appeared. It wasn't long before I was skipping school to be home when This old house was on during the day.Eventually I was influenced to take building trades in high school and went on to work almost 30 years in the modular home business doing what I love, working with wood!A lot of fond memories of Bob Villa. My mom thought I was crazy liking the show so much at 12 years old.
