I feel sorry that they had to sell these beautiful pieces of jewellery. Now they are scattered all over the world
Many pieces of the Mellon jewelry collection, that were not sold at auction, were given to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, VA. They are currently on display in the Mellon galleries in the West wing of the museum. This includes the "Breath of Spring" multi-colored sapphire necklace.
The Mellon's were some of the greatest American philanthropists'. The VMFA in Richmond, VA and the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC were benefactors. A large part of the current VMFA 19th century French art collection and British Sporting art came from the Mellons. All three Mellon collections are housed in the West Wing of the museums; of which Mr. & Mrs. Mellon were one of two major financial donors to the building of the West Wing. They have donated their art to several other US museums as well. This is in addition to many financial gifts to colleges and universities across the country.
