  • The AVE Renfe class S106 (Talgo AVRIL) is the newest AVE train in Spain, for the national railway operator Renfe. This high speed train can change the track gauges between Iberian broader gauge tracks and standard gauge tracks, this s the first AVE train that can do this, in the past only ALVIA (& Euromed) trains where able to do this. The train on this route originally starts in Castello de la Plana, however I took this high speed train from Valencia Joaquin Sorolla. The final destination is Gijón (via Leon) but I only took the train until Madrid, the capital and largest city of Spain.

    I continue to be impressed with your videos and your emphasis on why rail travel is so important to our planet. This last point - the sustainability of rail travel - is something that is not mentioned in far too many TH-cam rail vlogs.
    Do keep up the good work, safe travels and please have a great day.

      Thank you so much, actually this is the main reason why I do this. Of course I also love trains, but I really want to show people the more sustainable solution. If everything is going according to plan, for next week's video, the first video in Africa, I got asked by many people, even in the train why I was travelling that way so I do feel some urge to upload that video asap (also because I have 2 videos on the same train type and i don't want to publish this close to each other).

    25 years ago when I was working in Spain, I took the Renfe trains between Madrid and Valencia several times. IIRC, the high speed line from Madrid to Barcelona wasn't completed yet, so you had to connect to a lower speed regional train in Zaragoza. EDIT: The routing through Zaragoza was for traveling between Madrid and Barcelona, not Madrid and Valencia. Sorry for any confusion.

      Zaragoza? That's weird. There have always been direct services between Madrid and Valencia (via Albacete). I remember taking the Alaris trains.

      @@SierraCameros I apologize for the lack of clarity. Yes, there was direct high speed service between Madrid and Valencia. Claro. I was trying to say that at the time I was working in Spain (2000-2004), there was no direct high speed line all the way from Madrid to Barcelona. If I had to go to Barcelona from Madrid and wanted to use a high speed train, I could go high speed from Madrid to Zaragoza where the high speed service terminated, and connect to a regional train.

    Great video.
    First of all, just a small thing - AVE is read as a word: A-Ve. It is an acronym (for alta velocidad españa) but we tend to read it, if possible, as a word and in this case it's also part of the brand as Ave means bird in Spanish.
    For Valencia station,
    Like a lot of other station in Spain now it is, finally, going through big changes.
    The Joaquin Sorolla station was built as a temporary one, hence the very basic and spartan look. Of course this temporary thing took much longer than planned.
    The fist stage of the new station is in an advanced stage and includes moving the tracks leading to the stations underground. Once finished they will start building a new combined station moving the platforms underground an gigging a second tunnel to the other direction turning it into a through station. They will, of course, integrate the old Nor station building into the new combined station.
    A park will bu built on top of the new underground sections.
    Similar renovations and expansions are done all over the country as the the number of passenger is on a sharp rise thanks to the success of open access. In the Valencia area it will be more notifiable as after decades of slow construction the Mediterranean corridor is nearing completion (probably in about 3-4 years) turning connecting Barcelona along the sea to Granada directly.
    As for the other operators, Alsa (a bus operator, part of the UK company Mobico Group, and recently a rail operator of freight and touristic trains) planes to enter the high speed business together with Eco Rail. The plan is to start with the route to Asturias as this is where Alsa was formed and, for now, has no competition as it currently requires a gauge changing train. There are also a few suggestions that NTV (AKA Italo - the Italian high speed operator) might start operating in Spain after their parent company, the giant shipping company MSC, entered the rail market in Spain by acquiring 50% of the freight arm of Renfe - Renfe Mercancías.

    How are the seats of the AVE S106 in terms of comfort, legroom, recline, infotainment screens...? I am going to travel on an Avril to Vinaròs round trip. Please answer me as soon as possible 🙏

    Thank you for the great video! I also think that the screens in the middle of the tables really reduced the functionality of the tables. If travelling alone, the screens are not great for using a pc and doing some work. I f travelling with others, such as children, it will no longer be possible to comfortably play board games or draw, due to the screens sticking out mid-table. Bit sad about this, but look forward to trying the new model out!

    Media Distancia are a good option usually cheaper than the High Speed Ave, but as you say they don't show up on Renfe website until closer to your travel date, Also if you are over 60 you can get a Oro Dorada (Gold Card) which can be bought at the train station or Spanish travel agents which gives you about a 20 percent discount and costs about 6 euros for one year. thanks for a good video and look forward to your trip to Morocoo

      Actually the price is also why I take them in general. Between Sevilla and Malaga the route for the MD trains is really pretty as well. I really think booking terms in Spain should be more equal, that's way easier for everyone to book tickets. Also regional trains should be visible, there are many touristic coastal towns where there are frequent trains but this doesn't pop up in the timetable. (I'm meaning Rodalies and Cercanias).
      I didn't knew about the age discount, I have to wait a bit for that though haha. Thanks for sharing.

    Interesting opinion. Most people do hate new Avril trains here. So it’s nice someone does’t bash it entirely. Talgo builds nice trains but this techinically OK but aimed to be a high density low cost option to compete with other operators. So more packed, hard seats, three seats rows and disgraceful coffee shop car. Having several types in my town I will Avril next time like the plague.

    • @Trainviking
      @Trainviking  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      People who complained about the lay-out of the 2nd and the 1st class didn't complain for the same reason when they where in Japan. So I don't see that as a complaining thing, the body if these trains is (as far as I know) wider than most Shinkansen trains for example.
      The seats are definitely not the best, I guess I'm also saying this but I can't say that it's terrible. Mayve I change my mind on this at the moment I'll take the entire ride.
      It's true that other AVE trains have better seats.

      @@Trainviking People are used to Ouigo, Iryo and Patos AVEs which are far more comfortable. I suppose people can’t understand the concept “more modern” but more low cost in general.

    • @ahh_bueno
      @ahh_bueno 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FranciscoCamino We understand "more modern", but AVRIL trains are not "low cost", some of them are AVLO and the rest are AVE. This model will be a great AVLO (Renfe low cost high speed trains) but for an AVE they are quite expensive, >90-100 € if you don't buy with at least 2-3 weeks on advance.

    • @FranciscoCamino
      @FranciscoCamino 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@ahh_bueno I know. I guess it’s what it will be happening in Galicia as long as other competitors don’t come into the route. They advertise avril as high density, cost effective, cheaper options. But as you point put, in Renfe hands they wont reduce fares in the short term if others don’t force them to.

    • @ahh_bueno
      @ahh_bueno 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Trainviking I think the whole criticism around AVRIL trains are not the layout (at least not only the layout). The decisions on cafeteria layout, the screens (2010s vibes), the quality of finishings, the vibrations, etc. are also part of the complains along with the 2-year delay.
      But it was bought especially for the Galicia-Madrid route as it was overcrowded, has few frequencies, and it is extremely slow for a High Speed Line (because it has iberian instead of standart gauge). It's been said that they will reduce time and extend frequencies for that route and the reality is that in the first week of commercial use the reducion of time has been: 11 minutes (far away from the +45 min of reduction) and the train frequencies are just 2 more per day than usual. Both improvings are clearly not enough
      It is been a catastrophic start for this Talgo. Hopefully Talgo and Renfe can improve the service quickly. But the complains are honest and rightful.
      PS.- Also, as a personal opinion, I don't think is fair to compare Shinkanken and AVE 3+2 layout. Although it could be just a matter of time for spaniards to get used to 3 seats placed together, there are some cultural disimmilarities between Japan and Spain that could mean that layout is great for a country while being a wrong decision for the other one.

    Incredible and detailed video!! Just one question, max speed of this trainset is not 380 km/h!! Probably Talgo says it is by design, but reality is that this train´s max speed in regulari timetable is 300 km/h wich is also de speed allowed in the spanish rails. Some sistems of some trains (not all 106 are the same) have been certificated to 330 km/h but this is not a real max. speed. I´m spanish and I really dislike this new trainsets, 3 years of delays for a train with tons of noise and vibrations... and that low cost seat configuration... no way!
