To dodge all those missiles without counter measures, just goes to show what great situational awareness he had. To see all those missiles and dodge them like that. No doubt the training paid off, but also it takes a special kind of person to be able to pull that off in the heat of the battle without freezing. 25-year F-16 avionics troop (and instructor) here. Coefficients are also known as Canopy Coefficients. The problem is in manufacturing, no two canopies have the same optical qualities. So during the manufacturing process, the finished canopies are tested with lasers, etc to see what distortion exists in front of the HUD. This data is converted into corrective numbers that are affixed to a sticker on the canopy (Far front, left edge) and entered into the Fire Control Computer (FCC). These are then passed on to the HUD Electronics Unit (EU)--a computer in the avionics bays.
Anyway, sometime in the 80s, pilots figured out that you could play with those numbers in the computer and change the placement of HUD symbology. Welp, sometimes it worked, and sometimes it made it worse. Admittedly, oftentimes the guy at the factory was drunk or something and the numbers were way off. Our tech data really only allows us to reload the factory numbers, although unless we did a HUD EU change (or a canopy change, obvs) we left it alone, figuring it was the pilot that had to live with the results.
Interesting that the jet in your thumbnail is from Torrejon. I was there from 85-89 when we transitioned from A to C models.

Another tactics SA-6 sites (Kub) can use is: turn your radar on briefly, just enough to get the direction, altitude and speed of the target, then turn it off. Calculate (or guess) where the point of impact will be (you know his flight parameters and the velocity of the missile, so you can calculate roughly) or take an estimated guess and launch at least two missiles into that point without guidance, but keep your targeting radar pointed there manually without turning it on...
Then, seconds before estimated time of impact, turn the radar back on. The missiles (which are in the air but the plane knows nothing about it since the radar is off) should pick up the signal and home in on it if everything is all right from the SAM's point of view...
If the plane is still there, they will go for him and he will have just seconds to react. If not (you estimated wrong or he changed his flight parameters), you will see that and turn the radar off again to avoid SEAD. In the later case, you will not hit him, but will live to fight another day...
That tactics was used to shoot down an F-16 in Bosnia and later in NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. Forced a lot of planes to give up on their mission while keeping SAM sites alive and kicking...

To actually see what someone has to go through when placed in a very stressful situation like that. The story itself would be great, but to actually see it. I can tell by the concise analysis that you do every time you break in to explain something, that you
    A) _DEF_ know wtf you're talking about
    B) Understand that the incredible video footage tells that story in a completely captivating way, so you refuse to dilute its impact.
C)You must be one helluva fighter pilot. I can tell by the way you explain things. At times when Stroke 3 was maneuvering for his life, you'd smile & then put your head down with a sort of bopping motion that was reminiscent of how musicians lock in to their groove (I'm a musician so I'm telling ya, when I see that kind of motion, even in such a subtle way as you did, that's a pilot that feels the rhythm of combat).
Is that what you were doing, feeling the rhythm of Stroke 3's inspired Jinkification? Because, you know, I could be totally wrong & you just hadda go to the head compartment and drop those pee tanks🤣😱😵‍💫👁️👀👁️🤣.
As for Stroke 3.....wherever you are, you, sir, are a god damned _WIZARD_ stick & rudder God! Best pilot shit EVER!

Amazing video! Just a quick question, I’ve heard that f16s have the potential to easily g-loc their pilots if they are not careful enough. Have you ever been in a situation like this and has there been safety measures to prevent this from happening, especially for Thunderbird pilots?

    • @patrickgriffitt6551
      @patrickgriffitt6551 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There are measures in place to mitigate this. Placement of seats and controls are such to allow sufficient movement under hi Vs. As a non pilot I was allowed to ride in an F-16 and experienced well over 8Gs and still had limited movement and I repeat I am no pilot so it's not something I experience everyday as a matter of course.

what happened to stroke 4, did he survive?
    from wikipedia:
The loss of two F-16s can be attributed to a series of stresses, the lateness of the Air Tasking Order, not enough coordination time, a tactical approach that provided the Iraqis considerable warning, fuel problems for the Weasels and other aircraft, bad weather, and insufficient attrition of the defenses combined to create a dangerous situation.
There were a number of crucial lessons from Package Q. The most obvious was that Iraqi defenses in Baghdad remained lethal: future strikes on Baghdad would be mostly assigned to F-117s, but conventional air assets with better coordination would still strike targets in downtown Baghdad.
