How to start drawing (for beginners)

- I'm often asked how someone can start learning to draw from the very beginning, so this video is those people! There are certainly fundamentals and techniques you can learn, but I learnt with a much simpler method. I hope somebody finds it helpful!
amzn.to/4dch5AJ "FORCE: Dynamic Life Drawing to learn": A good book to learn about gesture drawing and what makes it look good
amzn.to/3wbUfsi "Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers": This book teaches the basics of composition in a visual way, I liked it
amzn.to/3wePw9a "How to Draw: drawing and sketching objects and environments from your imagination": Kinda intense imo but if you REALLY wanna get dirty with perspective and construction this is the book to get

Who else watching this even tho they arent beginners? Or is it only me
I’m the same haha.
Same here. And I'm glad I did. I needed to be reminded of some of the suff mentioned.
i feel beginner everytime i draw
Same here lmao
same
Me who's been drawing for 7 years: ah yes I needed this
SAME.
High five
real
I've been drawing since before I can remember and I still watched this...
My guy 🤝
Finally! Now nobody can stop me from drawing my anime men!!!

the hero we all needed has arrived
"Fun comes before Damentals"
Unironically a good line!
Unironically stealing this.
I need it as a sticker that I can put on my sketchbook 😂
The "you don't need expensive materials" comment was SO TRUE. I have drawn with pens I find randomly at school and take, pencils, brush pens, broken pencils, almost fried out pens, pens from banks, ANYTHING I CAN FIND I USE. Fancy colored pencils are sometimes better than the things I listed but crayons from restaurant kids menus are entirely okay. I've also used random papers I find too. Any material you find lying on the ground somewhere or that is given to you for something, you can use. I find drawing with crayons easy, my brush pens are just as fun to use though.
I also draw with pens, but those are pens i steal.
best art supply is the one you "found" randomly anywhere
The amount of people i see with iPads and apple pens i hardly use it 😭
A large group of people says "oh you wanna start? perspective and anatomy!!" and the real starts is... just starting
This is why this video its very important
I think one of the most impactful learning for a beginner will be to find out what they actually like/enjoy/are passionate about.
And that’s where fanart and “just copying” art that you like comes in handy. As a beginner I often copied scenes from my favorite shows or drew my favorite Pokemon etc.
I’m 22 y.o. started taking art seriously about 1.5 years ago and just NOW realized what I actually wanna do.
But the moment you realize that, learning will become so much more easy, intuitive and fun!
So all advice I can give to beginners is:
- Start out by drawing what you like. Copy from shows, manga, games; doesn’t matter
- Experiment with different things you seem to gravitate towards (I for example always thought I liked character design in general but later found out that it’s creature design specifically that sparks my joy. But you can’t find that out if you don’t dare to be bad at something new first)
- Learn the fundamentals if you feel stuck/have artblock/ don’t know how to go on.
You’ll need those anyway, no matter what you wanna do.
And lastly:
The most impactful quote by my high school art-teacher was: “be brave to make mistakes” which can be accompanied by another saying: “don’t avoid making mistakes but make them faster” :)
You don’t need to show anyone your work, you don’t need to be a pro or know what you want/what to do the moment you touch the pencil.
You basically ‘just’ need passion. And don’t be fooled to think that passion will always be there and you’ll never be frustrated because YOU DEFINITELY WILL
And there will be moments where you feel like giving up
But in the end if you keep drawing it’ll bring you further than sitting frustrated in your rooms corner.
I always tell myself this whenever I feel stuck, frustrated or have imposter-syndrome.
Even if I do fail; at least I’ll fail doing something I love
Have a great journey y’all 🩵
Yeah, I started with drawing dragons (very badly lol) and it was still pretty fun, even if they didn't look as good
Plus I still got better and stuck with the drawing. Idk if I would if I would have started with some boring exercises
From someone who started art at 36 yrs old I greatly appreciate this video 😊
I'm 36 and just picked up a pencil. The "I wish I started 10 years ago" thought crosses my mind atleast once a day now 😅
"Children don't have the taste to judge their drawings as bad, so they just keep going just for fun", such great piece of wisdom, not just for art, but for almost all skills. We may laugh at those cringey horrible writing fanfics we can find of the net, but those were the building blocks for a lot of them to become great authors nowadays. Practice and fun everybody, practice and fun.
The saying is true we’re our own worst critics we are often the wall we have to overcome. We often convince ourselves to not do because why bother but as pewdiepie showed just a few drawing consistently really allows you to progress. Don’t worry/think just do. Draw what you like and try to draw while referencing other artists you like to help by learning from their experience. After all we’ve come so far from learning and studying each others discoveries if we did everything by ourselves and from scratch we would not have made the same progress and advancements we have.
I love the "there's too much content about art for beginners to learn, SO I MADE MORE"
All jokes aside though, as a person who started art a mere couple months ago, these are actually really good tips that I myself have followed despite not having anyone tell me so. Hearing you talk about them reaffirms that I have been doing the right thing all along!
For anyone afraid of not seeing progress, trust me. The difference between not drawing at all vs. drawing for just a month is like night and day.
Tbh the main problem for me, is that its really hard to convince myself to draw... I mean, i like drawing and i enjoy the process when i do it but its just sometimes incredibly hard to convince myself to sit down and draw
YES I can absolutely relate to this!
It's so fun to draw but until I pick up the pen, it's a hassle to convince myself to just do it...
Im a Beginner too (few Months in), what i like to do is : Fundamentals here and there and for the Fun part i watch and follow along - "Draw this/ draw with me" etc Tutorials, that way i end up with Art i can feel good about and encourage me to stay active, while also learning/practicing.
Stay motivated my Friends!
It's hard to stay motivated when I hate every single thing I draw. Maybe it gets easier once I'm better at it.
It does once u look at ur old sketch books and ur old art and it said to yourself look how much I approved 😁😁😁 even if I'm not famous but at least I'm good at drawing
💀💀💀
Compare what you draw now to what you did one month ago, or even one week. When you're starting out that amount of time is enough to show a lot of improvement and it will boost your confidence and motivation
Even worse when you felt like I followed a guide decently along, then hop on to social media to see what others draw. Instant demotivation, no touching a pencil for months
@@sercba8728 Those "I learn how to draw in 30 days" videos scarred me. Whenever I notice improvements, I'm always reminded that those people improved more in 30 days than I did in 3 months.
I just began my art journey three months ago. To be honest, it's hard not to beat myself up for not starting sooner. It's fun, addicting even, and I've already made major strides in improvement. Just do it, you got this.
Oh wow. You have distilled art for us mortals in the same way Sycra did back in the day
and just like him, inspired me to do art again. Thanks!!
6:51 As an adult, I really needed to see this graph. This really helps me to keep going, thank you!
I'm 16 but I relate to this so much
Watching this as an artist who started at 8 i realize how privileged i am. Not ever having put these questions as in “in what order do i draw the face”. Kind of a realization on how far ive gotten! Any bigginer artists reading this please never stop u will be so glad u did all of that work in a couple of years.
bro. i have been drawing since i've been drawing since i was a kid. of course the regular child doodling nonsense on a paper but around 5 actually put 2 and 2 together and figure out i loved drawing, as i grew i watched cartoons and animation yt channels and it inspired me even more to draw but like any other kid, i didn't want to do that bored fundamentals like shapes and 3d, which held back my art a lot, i would just draw whatever i wanted would improved my art little to none but i kept going.... and look at me now. i have been drawing for 14 years and it took 12 years/a decade+ for me to actually start making real progress, being able to draw thing i could only dream to draw before. and i have to say i am proud of myself of not giving up as 12 years is a long time to be struggling for and still going, my will was and still is strong and i grateful for my pastself of not giving up.
if i could say anything to you all watching this. is things don't always go how we want them to or as fast as we want them to, but know, when you do get to where you are heading in your art journey you will look back and see all your struggles as an achievement instead of a box of shame.
Art is slow. some people art born with some talent with it and some arent. but wanna know the similarity with both? well, both sides still have to practise and work hard. no one can just spawn into the world and be drawing like da Vinci. practice and patience is key, and with it, it will open plenty of doors for you. you can never say you are done learning art. there is always someonething to learn, so be ready to learn, fail, try again, and succeed.
To end this i will say. watching tutorials are not enough. just watching them and just storing them in the back of your mind isn't going to make you draw better, actually practise what you learnt, if you dont then the tutorials you watch will be completely and utterly useless... dont feel like you have to draw a certain way. the way some people draw just wont work for you no matter how hard you try to copy it, try it and if it doesn't work find a new technique of drawing... Dont give up and keep at it!! 💫💫🌟🌟
Everybody starts somewhere when it comes to learn art, me right now, changing from cartoon to manga. It feels strange but i want to evolve my art. 😬😬
I’m 14 and I but I started drawing when I was 9. I stopped for a few years and I was getting stressed because people my age were creating masterpieces. This video really helped me realize that it doesn’t matter if someone is younger and can draw better then me. I really enjoyed this.
Almost 100k! Absolutely deserved! Thank you Pikat for the invaluable information and thanks to the video editor for the consistently great video quality! Let's go!
idk how to write it without sounding a little cringe, but your videos inspired me to try drawing for the first time and I'm having fun. If I ever become any good ill come back and thank you again sometime.
This isn't cringy its sincere.
Been following you since the beginning and honestly? You're the real deal man. Lots of respect for you and I hope everything works out for you!
I started drawing last month and have already a "plan" based on what seems like a logical succession of step :
> Learning how to draw
shape/ geometry (circle, straight line, arc, curce, ellipse , square, cube, cylinder, sphere) and learning to use my shoulder and elbow
>proportions
>perspectives
>simple body construction (body figure)
>gesture (gesture figure)
> anatomy >
foreshortening>
Composition>
Light/value>
Color Theory
All of this while drawing characters from my favorite shows and using references .
Can someone tell me if this plan is wrong , not adapted for a beginner (or its flaws in general)?
"You dont need expensive materials" YESSS i've been drawing with my 6 inch phone for 3 years now and I've improved a lot hshshs (i still wish a have a bigger screen though)
Love to see how positive your videos are. I always try to convince my students to take their time learning art. Take little steaps and go far ❤❤❤❤✨✨✨✨
I found you trying to find art tutorial videos yesterday and having my head spin from all the different results. Your timing is impeccable, thanks so much for this!
As a person who has been drawing for 1+ year, I felt like I needed this-
honestly even though I’ve been drawing for 6 years I still feel like this video helped a lot, especially the skill vs. taste thing. I hadn’t considered that before, and it’s a new perspective that I really like!
really love this typa video, hope u make some more!
I quite literally just got an iPAd a couple days ago and have been STRUGGLING to find a way to start. Thank you for uploading !!!
I just began my art journey, so thank you so much for this video!!💕💕
Thank you so much for the guide.
Thanks a lot for this, I just took a break from drawing for a week and this is perfect to remind me of what I should study!
Congrats on 100k! Your channel is so good! Love from Brazil!
Your amazing. This came out at the perfect time. I just got my very own drawing tablet and I am very excited to start learning
It's crazy how i just found your channel just yesterday and wanted to start drawing (better). Perfect timing haha
Im not even a full adult yet and ive learned anatomy to a advanced level still learning though. The thing that helps is knowing that your never done learning. So the begging means nothing compared to the bigger picture. So keep learning , never stop
my final exams are close and i wanted to lesrn art after them, even though i got a good table to learn drawing thank you so much for this video it's gonna help me a lot ✨
Very nice and clear video thank you !
CONGRATS ON 100K!!!!
this is so helpful, thank you!
Thank you so much for this video, it got me from dragging my feet while making breakfast to super pumped to get drawing & start the day!!!
I’ve never teared up at a graph before. Thanks for this. We can do it!
Thank you for the tips and kind advice! I am self taught and I've been drawing for 20+ years, so it's always nice to be reassured and reminded that just because I'm not where I would like to be now, it doesn't mean the end of the world. Younger me would be very excited by my progress. (Also to your partner; Kubo's style is hard to nail down, but they did an excellent job on that Rukia!)
Tip to younger artists: Please please PLEASE do not carelessly toss out your old work! I know it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking it is bad and cringe, but it is SO helpful and important to be able to look back and see your progress. You may even inspire yourself!
I really like this video! I wouldn’t considered myself someone new to art but I lack skill like mentioned in the video and this actually helped my mind realize why I’m so far behind. I need to work on my actual imagination and continue to practice me Skill! Thank you!❤
I'm in such an odd predicament. I can copy free hand to a tee to where it looks like I'm tracing since I inherited it from my grandmother. But at the same time I've never ACTUALLY learned how to draw original characters on my own.
I'm 43 now and I still have the impression to where if you want to be good at something you HAVE to do it when you're young. If you start now closer to my age it's too late to be good due to the time you're good at your craft you'll be in your twilight years.
I have no idea why I think like this. It's probably my black and white mindset
I drew on notebook paper with mechanical pencils i used for school for years. I currently use a budget tablet. You literally don't need anything fancy. Just draw.
my multi million youtuber blessed us with new video. God bless
I'd say I've been a beginner for years, always giving up at some point because "life gets in the way" or I get too frustrated... So it also means I've watched a ton of videos like this, and I can safely say yours is one of the best ones I've seen. You're very clear and also motivating, I hope this time I can actually keep practicing, thank you for the video ❤
Awesome video!
I’ve been on and off when it comes to art so seeing a video like this helps motivate me to actually keep doing it. lol
Started drawing as of recently and really needed this. I can copy, but my personal stuff looks way worse than the bad copies. I'm slowly coming to accept these bad drawings as all I can do right now, and that being okay and they're still fun to draw. I stopped enjoying a hobby before by not having fun and just focusing on grinding only to realize, what's the point of being good at something I don't find fun anymore. Thank you, Pikat
I started drawing back in high school, but stopped when I got to university. My art taste definitely kept growing, but my skill is lacking. It'll take time, but I'm having fun with it again, and those 5 fundamentals are super helpful. Thanks a lot! :D
I laughed out loud at you FUN Damentals line. Bravo!
I gotta say I just absolutely LOVE these videos, they're so engaging and informative for both beginners and experienced artists. Art is a skill that takes LONG to master. I'm coming up to about a decade of art experience and I started when I was in middle school, now I'm graduating college. Only NOW I'm at a point where I can look at my art and say "hey I really like this!" instead of "Eh I don't really like it, but it's not like *x* artist's work". Btw I totally took the long route because I never really did extensive studies or had a schedule or anything like that (I learned anatomy by getting into fitness and doodling funny buff dudes in my math notes)... I just did it for fun, drawing what I wanted, whenever I wanted sometimes having many weeks of not drawing anything. Having fun with it really IS the most important part, because THAT'S the thing that'll get you through the plateau's, burn out, and art blocks. It's a long journey, and the destination will inevitably come, so hands up and just enjoy the ride!
My soul needs that Clodsire headpats as a 10 hours loop
3:39 "You can start doing it, by just doing it : )" *me with aphantasia:* "We're gonna have a problem here..." LOL
I’ve been drawing 3 1/2 years, and I often times get too hard on myself. My drawings haven’t had much appeal, so I try to go back to the fundamentals.
Thank you for showing some directions to take.
I needed this😭😭😭
As someone who constantly overthinks and is a complete art newbie this video is really informative .
You're the coolest, Pikat
Aight, even before getting into the content, this is the first time I've seen a pixel art vtuber avatar and it's 10/10.
Now to actually get learnin' lmao
Clodsire plush being petted? Okay you win!
I'm 30 years old and I'm starting my artist journey, age doesn't mean shit! I'm very harsh at myself and I'm learning to be less harsh at myself so I can appreciate my growth and NOT PRESSING CTRL+Z ALL THE TIME
Thank you for saying I'm not late to learn draw 😊❤
I'm subscribing

new pikat video ‼️‼️‼️
Thank you Pikat for your content
ur video is very cheerful to start draw
Im not really a beginner so I watch Pikat mostly for the emotional and mental aspect of being an artist and holy hell she nails every damn feeling I feel.
Im not sure i count as a beginner anynore after almost 3 years, but watching vids like this still helps alot!
Been about 97% consistent with drawing digitally every day (fell off after starting college 8 years ago after being happy with where I was traditionally. I’m already at a point where I’m able to look back at my best pieces from back in the day and see flaws and things I can do better. I just do a 30 min sketch, but take care to properly self critique afterwards. For me it’s more about being lost on techniques/effects to render things. There’s lots of do specific things to get specific results in this specific case, but not a lot of “doing this type of thing causes this type of effect” - it’s all hyper specific instead of generalized tools.
Eager to finish recovering from my surgery so I can get back into practice. Not allowed to be leaning over a tablet and my desk isn’t equipped to fasten an am onto (glass top). Guess I gotta break for another 3-5 weeks until the doctor says I can. Getting antsy though
“Let me simplify it and break it down for you”
I lowkey should get back into drawing for fun I had stopped after my art was ripped up by some unknown individual after I accidentally left it in a classroom. I was so devastated I lost the joy in it and stopped but videos like these make me want to try again 🙏🏽
Произношение очень приятное...🥰 Она такая горячая!🥺

SCOTT ROBERTSON MENTIOOONEEEEDD
I would really appreciate an in depth tutorial on art fundamentals, especially construction.
There's thousands of videos telling begginger artists what the art fundamentals are, but don't actually teach them. Even paid courses from popular art teachers gloss over them too much for my brain to be able to learn
Great video.
fun comes before damentals XD
Solid advice there. I can't wait for by arm to heal. I am creatively starved right now X(
This was really helpful even though I've only started drawing 2 years ago I've only started learning anatomy and all the stuff more late last year Like December And only started trying to learn other stuff as well And sometimes I'm like oh why didn't I start practicing that Or I wish I did but I do realize I shouldn't focus on the the past and try to focus on in the present and enjoying myself And try not to stress too much about How I'm doing Sometimes I do feel like My art's not good enough but I realize that Eventually I'll get to a point that I am really Happy with But right now enjoy the process that I'm going on❤
Pronunciation of Van Gogh was actually good!
6:59 I’ve never heard this perspective on why kids can just keep drawing. It makes sense, and makes me feel better for finding it hard to “have the learning mindset of a kid.” I won’t stop trying to be as unworried about “bad” art as a child, but it’s good to know what psychological obstacles I might encounter in the process.
I've been drawing since i was little kid of course i have my good days and my bad days when comes to drawing but i really don't care about the fame, glory, and money, i just want to fun have fun while I draw and create my piece. Now I'm 28 and i look back at my old sketches and art work and i see how much I improved i gotta say is alot but still not enough. For me art is a journey with endless techniques to learn but you just gotta have fun while doing it😁😁😁
"It's ok you're starting out"
Morgan Freeman: He was in fact, not, starting out.
I don't even know why I watch these if I don't even have the drive to learn drawing, its just nice to listen to 😅
Wish i seen this video sooner, would save me a lot of nerves. "Keep calm and just draw" is a good advice, at least it works for me.
I really, really want to learn how to draw colorful magical cartoon ponies. I tried watching some tutorials on fundamentals of drawing (not horse related), and while they gave me some understanding of the mechanics and concepts - it was not enough. I went to learn more advanced stuff - and while i kinda understand what the person in the video is talking about the information just does not click in my head. And when i try to apply what i "learned" - i fail miserably and also feel horrible and kinda dont want to do it anymore. So i just settled for redrawing from photos and other peoples arts. Maybe i will return to those high concepts when i feel more confident.
hey, I'm your 100Kth Subscriber Congratulation it's 8:35 AM in My time zone You reach 100k
I began art 12 years ago when I was 20. It went well and was just a lot of fun until around 2020. I have many ideas why it may have become a massive stress in my life but regardless of why, even with this video I needed to pause and collect myself numerous times to finish it. This even happening when I love your presentation style, it's so easy to follow in comparison to others. I have been so focused on improving and meeting my undefined goals and it just hurts so much to be walled this hard.
I suppose I will ask, even if this may be off topic or rude but do you (or anyone in comments) think that a person may need to work through trauma or pain before they can continue finding the fun in expression like this?
In some aspects, yes. I’m currently learning how to draw because I want to show my process in a video (to hopefully help others), and I’m documenting my thoughts as I go. One thing that came to mind was trauma and negative emotion and other preconceptions about my own work. Like being unworthy or feeling like no one would trust what I would say even if I documented everything. Eventually after some reflection, I realized I don’t care-because it was all a smokescreen.
I can certainly give more details of my experience-spanning hours and days-but in short, you answered your own question by asking your question. I’m surprised I even came across a comment like yours having the same thought as I did, so I just felt compelled to answer because I’ve never seen people talk about this. I think you have a good grasp of your situation to be able to come up with a question like that-so trust yourself more! Your question already has the answer 🙂
@@DeyisWeninxia Thank you so much for the reply and it has me thinking for sure. Asking questions like I did online is such a desperate move because everybody's story is completely different. I'm just really happy that this time somebody saw this and came in with helpful input. Again, thank you.
@@SESauvie Yep, it’s a rough journey, but you’re headed in the right direction. I never had any confirmation from anyone and it was difficult. So if you ever have a question, just know that the question itself only exists because you already have the answer. Don’t wait for others to verify and confirm things for you (because you’ll wait forever!). Of course, I’m here to validate your experience, but it’s because I’ve done my own work too, and I’m sure many others have done so as well-they just don’t speak out, they’re unable to articulate themselves effectively, or they don’t engage in the community because of their own reasons. Whatever the case, enjoy freeing yourself from your challenges; I’ve gone in deep and I know you and every else can do it too.
hm hm super useful!
GREAT VIDEO
Not exactly a beginner, but this is still very helpful! Also I appreciate the Fire Emblem reference.
I've heard that the best way to learn (to draw) is to do that thing instead of making overly complicated plans to approximate the thing (drawing what you want to draw) so in that sense this video is the most correct 😂
Finally! Now nobody can stop me from drawing my anime women!!!
Banger(I haven’t watched it yet)
I love the art community.
Me who is perfectly capable of drawing well enough watching this video knowing damn well i probably won't learn too much 😃
I saw Hades 2, great
youre videos are great! you should try making one about making hands since its my only problem haha....
Love the video. Really struggling with the discouragement of starting as a young adult and the concern that I’m losing time if I dont start now. Also could you (or anybody) give some links to the books/references mentioned?
