    I'm glad you talked about over-stropping. I used to have that problem often because I would get obsessed with making the edge too polished. It would look amazing and was extremely narrow, sharp edges but it would be so smooth that I couldn't get it to have enough bite to slice into paper. That was awhile back. Luckily I've moved on from polished edges to a much more jagged edge with a heavy amount of bite because 95%+ of my actual usage is slicing through tape to open boxes.
    Sometimes I also was a little too high and would get in the zone stropping and just continue stropping in one direction for 5 minutes 🤦🏼‍♂️. 🤣😂

      Your right about stropping is not for knives but is for razors. Gunny Juice is overpriced by 1000%. It should cost $2.00. I don't know why anyone would use it. Who is selling us on this product?

      @@brianhoffman5367 Nothing could be further from the truth. Even normal alu. oxide compound cost more than you suggest and they don't give away highly graded diamonds. Much less monocrystalline diamonds.
      Just because they are man made makes no difference other than much higher ability to get a very narrow grit range in the emulsion you want.
      Of course, there are lower cost although lower quality products available for those such as yourself who really don't know or care what the differences are.
      If only sharpening lower Hrc steels, or more importantly, lower carbide content steels, you can get by with a simple alu. oxide compound. However, if sharpening such steels as the higher vanadium carbide steels, you are going to want a high quality, well graded in size diamond emulsion.

      @@brianhoffman5367 You are right but 1 micron isnt 1 micron. All these guy fluff their numbers, because thats not how diamond powder works. Diamond powder comes in a distribution. That 1 micron he sold you is probably a mix of everything from 0 up to 2 microns, with the average size being around 1 micron. If he was honest he would say this is a 0 to 2 um distribution. Or this is a 1 um to 3 um. etc. Also most edc bros ain't so bright so they use much finer abrasives than actually makes sense for anything. Something like 3 um on a wood substrate leaves a finer scratch pattern than even

    Thank you for saying it. "Over-polishing really isn't a thing but over-stropping is." Finally! Someone who understands. Although, I'm not sure I agree about the "teeth" you're talking about. I've polished edges down to .1µm using diamond lapping film and had zero problems with them becoming "slick" or not "biting". All that happens is that they get better and better at push cutting and maybe less aggressive when "slicing". To me, this is just a difference in application. Axes and saws both cut wood, they just do it in different ways. It doesn't mean that every tooth on a saw shouldn't be sharp AF.

    One of the top 3 compound I've ever used...
    1.) Gunny juice
    2.) KME CBN Emulsion
    3.) CKTG diamond spray ( Chefs knives to go)
    Would 100% recommend gunny juice, especially if you're into the high carbide, higher HRC "super" steels. It handled PM-A11 (10V), K390, S110V and Maxamet for me without issue ( I don't have anything, harder to throw at it) .... For the high carbide super'steels above, Ive LOVED the the 9 micron, followed by 3 micron. Very refined yet holds its bite.

      Top 3 Ive used. The same diamond all of these guys buy from the same industrial sources then they resell it to low IQ edc bros for 1000x markups. Here's 50 cents of diamond powder in some terrible carrier we came up with, that'll be $70 please. EDC bros are insane. You could buy enough diamond powder to last a literal lifetime for maybe $10. Could load idk maybe 1000 full sized strops with it, to the max. And once that stuff is loaded, it lasts a very very long time. No clue why EDC bros are obsessed with leather substrates either. They're more expensive and don't work as well. Hmmm, I notice a pattern here.

    I just got two sticks if stropping compound from Hutsuls. They say white is 750 grit and green is 3000? I was thinking white was for a finer polish. Would you use white first, then move to green?

    I notice that I see residual compound on my knife edge. I think I have too much gunny juice . Can I scape it off or just strop and it will thin out by using . TYVM another great video .

    A timely video with the recent loss of Ken Schwartz, do you have any comments comparing Schwartz and the gunny juice.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried the stuff from Schwartz but I've tried a ton of other stuff and this has been the most impressive, especially as far as polishing goes as far as coarser stuff venev has some very aggressive compounds

    I have a TON of s35vn in all different shapes and sizes (Medford, CRK, Toor, Spyderco, etc) that I need to sharpen or touch up. What micron Gunny Juice, and what angle would you recommend I use for general edc purposes?

    • @NeevesKnives

      The angle would be what ever edge angle is on the knife your touching up, but 6 micron is the best universal grit imo for touch ups etc..

    I have a question for you do you think stropping is necessary ? I have tried stropping with little results. I’m sure I need more practice and I don’t have a good strop. I can bring a edge back with a ceramic rod. Should I stick with that or am I missing out. Also I’m not worried about a polished edge. I use my knives a lot and just want them to be as sharp as possible. I really love your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your absolutely missing out, a Ceramic Rod is great for honing, burr removal and micro beveling, a Strop is great for maintenance and refining an edge and finishing burr removal, but yes you just need some decent leather and compound

    How often would you say you clean and reapply this compound? And when you do what would you say is the best way to clean it? Also how do you know when its worn out and time to reapply it. How does the longevity of gunny juice compare to other compounds? Thanks

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the compound and leather I'm using, but you clean it when it's built up, you basically just shave a layer off the top and start over

      Shake the bottle up just incase, but apply a super thin layer and make sure its dry before using
