It's so cool that your channel used to be comedic outdoor related content and now it's the channel to go to for impossible good photos of something nearly impossible to photograph. Pretty rad.
I'm still in awe from his video of the steel cookin on the beltgrinder
Thanks I appreciate it👊
@@OUTDOORS55 Your youtube channel is awesome! In a world of fake amazon reviews, channels like yours is so so important to people like me who want to look into things before I buy. Plus, your videos are just super interesting!
I'm a retired professional photographer and a few years ago took up knife sharpening. I've really enjoyed your channel for quite some time. Additionally, I really appreciate the increased production value of your content. You do a great job of informing your audience with much improved audio, video and the detailed micro / macro photography - all combined with a dash of humor. Thank you again for all of your great content and hard work.
Thanks I appreciate it! Im still very amateur with my photography but working on it! As you probably know macro is tough! Anyway thanks for the comment🙏🙏👊
Macro is tough - requiring lots of light with marginal depth of field. I can't even imagine trying to pull off that one belt sharpening segment while looking through the viewfinder. 🙂 I like what appears to be your focus stacking technique. 🙏🙏🙏
What what he said! Except I'm not retired, or a photographer. But but pretty much every thing else!
Hello brother your videos are amazing!! Could you make a video how to sharpen curved blades like karambits?
I think you are starting to keep the stone companys in check.
I have not seen anyone else look that close at the edge that different stones produce.
Keep it up man, its what we all need!!!!
Knife sharpening aside...those photos are incredible!!! THANK YOU!
Thanks! Glad they help cause they are a PAIN!!😂👊
for real what the hell
@@OUTDOORS55 As a novice to the knife sharpening world (only 2 sessions under my belt) your macro photos sealed the deal when considering what TH-camr to trust in the knife sharpening world. They help give me confidence that even though I don’t techniques and methods very well, your results don’t lie! Earned my sub for life!🏅
P.S. You are the only person I’ve heard of that uses macro photography like this and it’s a great way your channel is different from all others!
I bought this 3 years ago as my first proper diamond stone (it's weird to call it stone... plate?) and nice to know it's approved from a pro I trust :)
I don't sharpen often, maybe once a month or so and it still feels like new. The stand/case is also very good and doesn't glide around. You get value for your money.
The photography on this channel is outrageous.
Oh, and stone ordered 👍
Still an amateur at best but working on it👍👊
After reading negative comments on Amazon UK I've cancelled my order. Please let us know if your stone was flat and diamond layer was not peeling off
@mynewhobby6323 I've bought this one and the 6 inch. Both are perfectly flat and the coating is pristine.
We have been selling these stones at the local Woodcraft I work at for a couple years. I've sold dozens of them and absolutely zero problems. It's nice to see someone else acknowledge the quality of these stones. They are better by far than Trend and better by a not insignificant amount than DMT, which is saying a lot as DMT makes great stones. I have been using four of these in my sharpening class for two years and have yet to even begin wearing one out. It's always the first diamond stone I recommend for someone starting out. or someone who just wants a great stone. We have problems keeping them in stock as they sell pretty much as soon as they come in. What you found with your one stone believe me translates to all of them.
Sharpal recently came out with a 4" by 10" diamond flattening plate for waterstones that I have yet to try out, but expect it to be amazing. Don't know how they do it for the price, but I hope they keep it up.
Just ordered mine for pickup from my local Woodcraft
Thanks for sharing! I really trust this knife sharpening channel but it’s nice to hear someone else back it up especially considering it’s hard for him to verify consistency in the quality of the product. Thanks again!
I ordered one from Woodcraft. Only place that said they had them in stock online. As soon as I was done completing the order, I got an email saying it was back ordered and shipping may occur on March 22nd.
Great now I have to get one to replace my trend stone
I love that you take nothing for granted and test everything. I’ve watched a few videos on other channels and they don’t seem to have picked up on the finer points you have. Especially around edge life and stropping. Keep up the awesome work and photography!
This was the first stone that I bought when I first decided that I wanted to sharpen my own knives. I was worried about it after seeing your last video, so I'm really happy to see this video.
Your videos inspired me to try to learn sharpening and I bought this earlier today because it was a reasonably cheap way to get started. I'm delighted now!
Thanks for all the info and updates. Been watching your vids for a while, but finally pulling the trigger on better equip and technique to get better results. Super helpful! Thanks!
This is the stone I have that I've been talking about here. It's GREAT.
I feel so happy now because just last week I ordered that same diamond stone and loved it. I got all my knives very sharp quickly with the help of your videos.
Great to hear!👍👍
I bought it last week as well.
Bought one 3 years ago... cheap!
How much was it then. Curious to see if the price went up. $69 now for 8x3
Exactly what I wanted to start non guided sharpening. A good quality two sided diamond plate with a box/support and a guide for a reasonable price.
I just started working on learning and I'm struggling lol
I received it and tried it this morning. I don’t regret my choice. The stone is high quality. Good sensation for a beginner and we quickly get used to sharpen without guide.
In addition, efficiency of diamond with this grit avoid frustration
Holy dang, what a surprising gem of a sharpening device! Thanks for sharing Alex!
I've been wanting to learn how to sharpen like this for a while. I just ordered this. Thank you. Also, the zoomed in picture are amazing to look at.
I searched a few days back if you had already reviewed it and now you did it. Thanks for your work also greetings from Germany
gruess Gott.- ein Landsman
Ohhh noch mehr Leute.
Well I just bought one. I hope the QA gods are kind to me. I never cared for Sharpal products, but those photos and closeups are hard to deny the level of quality. Had a lot of fun learning to use diamond stones with that $20 one, bought a 2nd for quick edge and tip repairs.
So, how'd it turn out?
Incredible macro images! Your analysis, advice and recommendations are top-notch. I have learned a lot about sharpening from this channel. Thank you.
I'm so glad I got my hands on this gem before it sold out! Thanks for the amazing close up shots! 🎉
Best and most honest sharpening channel, hands down
Yup... ^THIS^ 😊
Alex is the man for sharpening, knife-making, photography *and* dry humour 😎👍
I have the same stone. Still works great after 2-years. They also carry a leather strop block of the same size that fits nicely on top of the plastic case.
Have you been used this diamond stone to flattening water Stones ?
your recent videos are really impressive - your scratch pattern camera work is the best out there - thank you for your efforts!
Glad to hear you say how much you like the Sharpal. I bought the same one two years ago and it's still going strong.
Awesome video; just picked up a Sharpal 162N myself.
PS. the amazon link you provided is for the 156N - which is the 6in x 2.5in model. For those wondering, the 162N is the 8in x 3in model.
I inadvertently purchased the smaller one due to the link mixup.
I believe it's the Amazon link that is directing the 162N to the 156N. Every time I go to the 162N link, either by search or in the manufacturer's store page, it always shows me the smaller stone. Apparently the larger stone is out of stock and for some reason they have the links such as they are. I was happy when I thought the 162N was priced at 45 bucks but alas, it's the smaller stone.
I bought the smaller one and im sure it'll be just fine giggidy
Amazon was redirecting due to the 162N being out of stock. Happened to me after I'd purchased the 162N, but before it was delivered. Went back in to my order and it kept showing me the 156N. I started wondering which I'd bought. The 162N wouldn't come up in the Amazon searches. Fortunately the 162N was delivered.
I went to the Sharpal website and clicked on the "Buy Now" button and was sent to the 156N Amazon page. As per prior comments, looks like the 162N is out of stock. Bummer
I have been using this stone for years. I have sharpened probably 1000+ knifes and I mean profiling notch/chip repair I have reground the tip of several knifes. In a nut shell i totally abused it and it still sharpens great. I have been selling them from the small town feed/farm supply store I work at for a few years. I have put to practice the techniques you have tought on your channel and have given demo's on that same stone and have sold probably 50+ and not a single complaint. And thats saying a lot for a small town were everyone knowes each other. Lol i have hoped for years you would do a review of this stone. Thanks a million. 🎉🎉
I wish i could buy them directly from the manufacturer. I have been buying them off Amazon and woodcraft then resaleing them. If anyone has the contact information i would greatly appreciate it.
Damn dude you just saved me. I went to order it on amazon but saw it was sold out. Then I went to the Home Depot website and had it in my cart but when I refreshed the page, it was sold out. Then I dejectedly started reading through the comments and saw from your comment that it's also sold at Woodcraft. I didn't even know that store existed! It's now ordered and ready for pick up. Lol. You really hooked me up man, thanks!
They have a website with contact information...
Just bought it last week and am already returning it as the fine diamond layer was already flaking off :S @@machaf
This channel is the bomb as far as knife sharpening goes. I love when he uploads.
I've been using Sharpal diamond stones a lot the past year. Sharpened probably 50+ different people's knives and a dozen of my own, mostly with the diamond field sharpener. They are awesome and I'm glad they are receiving recognition.
Awesome, can you test their strop/compound combo next
I have had this stone for a while now. absolutely love it so much. so good to have the validation in thinking this is the best I've seen.
Me too I got mine just 4 days ago sharpened every knife. This stone is a beast
Hi.
It still working fine after been used all this time ?
@@axlaguilar5289 it works flawlessly hold up very good no visible damage to diamond layer and grit is as good as ever
@@axlaguilar5289 yes it's holding amazingly no damages or delamination and grit staied true
I've used the Sharpal for years now. It's been my go to diamond stone and I'm super glad to see I got lucky in my pick of sharpening stone. Thanks for doing the review with the close up pictures and video! 👍
Nice! I bought myself this very stone at Christmas because all of the ones you recommended were sold out. It's my first unguided stone...I've been very happy with the results! (Your coaching on how to hold a consistent angle helped immensely too). Thanks so much for the great content!!
i have this exact stone, and i can also recommend it!
Oi oi
I don't have a need for another diamond bench stone right now, but I've been thinking about getting the double sided sharpening puck or diamond file from Sharpal and it's good to know they're able to make good double sided diamond abrasives. I really like the idea of their diamond file because it comes with a leather cover that can be used as a strop, I haven't found many other portable sharpeners with a strop.
I'm sure you're spammed with requests to buy more things all the time, and I know you already spend a ton to test out all these things which I really appreciate, so I'm a little sorry to add to that, but I'd love to see your perspective on Atoma diamond stones. I've often seen them talked about as the highest quality diamond stones on various knife and woodworking forums, but almost never with any kind of objective inspection of the stone or the edge it leaves, mostly just how it feels to use.
I can say, the metal/diamond rod they sell is just as nice and high quality. They seem to produce really nice products.
I have owned this exact stone for a few years, and i agree, it's fantastic! It's good to hear an expert confirm my thoughts.
Hey, I loved the Video! Great to see a manufacturer pull of a high quality and cheap Diamond stone.
Just got the set, in Germany they go for ~$45, crazy value
I gotta stop watching your videos cause I keep buying sharpening stones :(
You might not need any more stones at all after this and maybe a good 4000, I've got one of these and it's legit
@@rickmartin7674yeah i just got mine today it’s really impressive
I have that and use it on my kitchen knives. And they’ve been great plates so far. It’s good to hear your expert informed opinion, they are better plates than I can sharpen!
Thank you! First stone ordered. This is exactly what I was waiting for.
Good day from Ukraine, sir!
Im a long time fan of your work.
As a knife enthusiast i, for some reaso, to this day was unlucky to come across a really good knife. Knives are somewhat enchanting for me so i look for a really precious one. Those ones youve shown in your videos feel like legendary weapon.
As you know there is a war going on at my home and i have gone to the military service. Life can end abruptly here so i decided to try and ask.
Can you please sell me one of your super knives, like the one you have shown chopping wood all day etc? It can be ugly, unfinished or broken, i just want to finally see what the really good and properly tempered steel from a real master feels like.
Thank you in advance!
For anyone who see this please upvote so the master can see it.
Thank you very much and may you all live long and happy lives.

I bought this stone on your recommendation. So far it's awesome. Thank you for showcasing it and all of your deep knowledge on this topic. Because of you I am finally getting better at putting an edge on blades!
I’ve had one for 3-4 years and it was my first diamond plate. A lot of money into a lot of plates later, and it’s still what I grab every time.
Mine just came in the mail today. I couldn't be happier. It made sharpening my knives so much easier. Seriously, thank you.
I just came from your august 17, 2023 video asking if there were other brands. I was going to ask you about Sharpal. But here you are. Thank you good sir.
Thank you for your unwavering enthusiasm and kid in a candy store good natured demeanor while at the same time being honest and well informed as you share the truth with some incredible photography based on your own genuine personal experiences. Your efforts are appreciated and it was a pleasure to watch your video....I personally enjoyed every moment. Thanks again brother🥰😎
Your sharpening advises really help!
I wasn't even think of forming the burr, that helps my knives achive shaving sharp.
I’ve been watching for awhile now. This is the first time after a ton of videos I think I’m going to purchase the sharpening system to start my journey. I honestly am an over thinker and I take forever to make a jump into something new. Thanks you for the information.
Just ordered one from your link, many thanks for a great channel with fantastic content. Keep well.
Appreciate the good information. I've recently started watching sharpening and knife videos, and find yours very informative.
I would say when it comes to these topics you are the number one on TH-cam. You have very detailed instructions and reviews and very impressive microscopic magnification.
I very nearly commented on this stone after that comment about double sided stones. I bought this a few weeks ago as a junker to learn with. The stone I received is pretty much like yours and the grit sizes were pretty consistent under my microscope. One extra data point on whether you got a freak great one.
Favorite channel, your footage is out of this world next level! Sharpal also makes a great green buffing compound. Glad to hear they are on the rise. Gotta pick one of the stones up.
I won't lie, I saw your other video about double sided diamond stones and since I owned the sharpal stone already I just assumed you were right since I didn't have a microscope to verify so I ended up just 4 days ago buying the dmt fine stone, I don't regret it but now I need to either find a use for it or find a buddy to give it to as a gift for a birthday.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!! Just got mine and absolutely LOVE it!! Sorry to hear you are having some issues, hope it all clears up and you are back on soon!
In the spirit of seeking affirmation, not information, I totally appreciate you validating my choice of stone. I’ve had this stone for over a year now (almost 2), and I like it. It did discolor pretty quickly, but hasn’t seemed to degrade the stone’s performance.
I bought one of these stones a couple of years ago when I first started watching your videos. I've been happy with it, and I'm thrilled to hear you think it's good!
Saw your video, bought the stone and love it. Great results even though I have nerver sharpened on a diamond stone. Thanks to your tutorials it was a fairly easy transition. This will be my new favorite method of sharpening. Thank You!
Recently acquired a couple 100 year old Stanley wood planes and have been reviving them. Found your channel looking for recommendations on sharpening. You did not disappoint. Really appreciate the scientific approach and integrity, debunking anecdotal claims and reporting what the data shows even if its not what you predict. Thank you. M4 is the best steel.
I been using that one for years. Just getting to where I need to replace it. Worked perfectly for me. My go to sharpener
Hey, Great video! I just picked up the Sharpal 3x8 on Amazon. The quality of the 1,200 grit side of the stone sealed the deal for me.
I already own 10 or more diamond plates and some resin-bonded stones. The packaging also will let me take the stone with me to sharpen kitchen knives for the family without bringing a large kit. Thanks again. 😎👍
Some of your recommendations are harder to get here in germany and I've had already picked out some alternatives to order at some point but as this is actually available for me I went for it immediately. Thanks for your work in research - the amazon afiliate-money is well deserved for that purchase🙏🏻
Wow, these photos are so cool !! It helps so much to understand what is happening on the edge.
Wow!! I am so glad I found your channel.. I was just about to buy a sharpening stone as the wife's blades were shocking to say the least.. This stone arrived today and incredible results have been returned !!
Thank you for a cracking review and I can't wait to find other blades now to practise on!
Alex! This video came at the perfect time for me, I finally realized my very old..at least 10 year old DMT two sided plate was not cutting it ( pun definitely intended) anymore. Worn out mostly by me using it to flatten out other wet stones ( not really its intended purpose) but served me very well. Ordered the SharPal to replace it and looking forward to those whittling edges! Great video and macro work…Cheers MikeR.
Just got my stone in the mail today and you sir were spot on! Thanks again for the review/recommendation 😎👌
My Sharpal arrived today and I was able to sharpen up a re-profiled Sencut Waxahachie that I chipped a week ago. It had previously resisted my sharpening efforts. Appreciate the lessons and the tip.
watched your latest video last night and bought the stone straight away. been following your channel for some time now and I don't think I will ever reach your level of skill but I started as a complete novice and I can now get to shaving my arm . I've watched many other people on youtube sharpening but it's the photographic close ups that helped me with understanding the importance of angle and getting the burr . I'll keep practicing thanks for your help
I thought I knew how to sharpen, but after watching your videos I have improved greatly in my sharpening results. Again thank you!
I applaud and commend the photo stack you did of the knife edge. That is quite the ammount of work and it is appreciated!
Yup... That really was something else and I seriously appreciate the amount of time and effort that Alex went through to produce that one image...
That, and the honesty and dry humour (sorry for the weird spelling, but I'm a Brit 🇬🇧) are what makes Outdoors55 the best sharpening channel there is 😎👍
My man... You are like the absolute best at not only sharpening but teaching to sharpen all while keeping it so interesting, informative, detailed as hell, and humorous!!... I honestly think you should have an actual TV show on Saturday morning like all the hunting, fishing, and car fixing up shows!!... Or like on the outdoor channels!! Hell I'd set an alarm and even make the ole' lady watch it with me so she'll see just what it takes and STOP throwing the good kitchen knives in the damn sink!!... Thank you for doing what you do my Brother!!
Just received this from Amazon after watching your video, its an incredible stone and package, im blown away, i have dozens of stones and ive not been this amazed before.
Thanks for the videos!
Keep em coming 👍
Bought one after watching this video a few days ago. Diamond coverage is superb and indeed has no contamination. Thanks for the information!❤
I love the honest and insightful reviews here. You have become a trusted source of information. Of course now I have way too many stones, but my knives are actually sharp now. Unfortunately, I'm not alone in believing you! Every time you recommend a stone, Amazon blows up and the items is permanently unavailable. This item is already gone, and other sellers have jacked their prices as much as double. I did find one source for 69.99, but I had to pay $12 shipping. Still a bargain. For me having two stones in one and the case is a big deal because I travel with it. All the multiple loose stones are a fail. Thank you!
Love the honesty in your videos
I have the free hand sharpener from sharpal of the same 2 grits and it’s been my favorite sharpener ever since I got it, too see you review the table stone at such a high regard makes me extremely happy, definitely gunna pick it up
Really appreciate your effort in making these videos. Excellent content👍
I just want to say, I love your endings. Definitely keeps me here
Lol, I had the DMT course stone (on your recommendation) left in my amazon cart for a couple days and in the mean time found this Sharpal stone and thought if this stone is at least on par with the cheap $20 diamond stones then I haven't lost a whole lot as I was getting a course and a fine side albeit I may not be able to finish on this fine stone. Glad I did because look what vid came up haha. It's good to get confirmation from someone that knows way more than I do on this topic - just starting out freehand sharpening and really enjoy it. Thanks for the work that you put into your vids - I really learn a lot from them!
Love your videos you are the first person that I have seen that has a very simple way to sharpen with a traditional wet stone. All the other videos I saw here didn't explain it well enough for me and expected you to be ambidextrous which I am at a lot of things (I was left handed until I was 4 but my 5 yr old sister told me to write with my write hand😂) but knife sharpening I am not.
Your videos are very informative on knife sharpening and I now can sharpen anything with almost any abrasive although I do struggle with the tips of knives at 4.25"- 4.5" but not really anything larger.
Because I have learned so much from your videos on the qualities of stone I know what my short comming are and can compensate for it. Despite not getting diamond compound or a better strop that's not totally contaminate free, i have gotten hair whittling sharp. Not perfect and not totally through out the blade but I am miles ahead of any one else I know. I have been able to find enjoyment from being able to get such nice edge on a knife very quickly and confidently instead of just struggling, failing then getting a new knife because I didn't know how to sharpen well.
And I too like monkeys from Florida they're hilarious.
Thanks for your videos, I find your humor funny, your instructions informative and your shots insane but totally useful to understand what is happening when you sharpen.
I bought one of these a few years ago, and it absolutely changed the time and quality of my hand sharpening. Great video.
Thank you so much. I stumbled upon your channel and realized that I needed to really up my blade-sharpening, since I am an avid home cook. Just placed an order for this "unicorn". And yes, the photography is addictive. I think it's why I keep coming back.
Hope it serves you well! Thanks for coming back! Really appreciate it🙏👊
I had this stone in my cart for a couple of weeks but didnt find many reviewers. Glad I watched shortly after you posted because I ordered right away and now its unavailable on Amazon now. Thanks for reviewing.
Thanks for the work you put in Alex. Everytime ive used stones, I never got a good result. I got a set for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I bought the cheap diamond block also and opted for this today. Ive managed to get my cooking knives better than before, and my pocket knife will remove hair. I am still learning, but your videos have helped me do this so far. Thanks for the content, reviews, and recommendations. Also, using the strop, which gives amazing finishes results.
Got this stone about 3 years ago. Even with a lot of use it still works wonderfully.
I believe this is what our chef has at work, I was super surprised when I used it how nice it felt cutting standard kitchen knife steels and did great when I’ve done some 14C28N blades
Great stone. Ive been using the same one for about 6 years and its still working great.
Its the only electroplated diamond stone that i still use.
Super cool I bought this one a year ago!!
It still works great
This has been my stone I’ve used for the last couple of years (except I have the smaller one) and here I’ve thought I needed to get some of the nicer more expensive stones. Good to know now I just need to keep trucking! Has been good for me!
Not just a one of either. I bought mine several years ago and it is perfect as well. The hand held field sharpener is also the same grit/quality. I also added a cheap extra coarse for edge/tip repairs and it all fits in the box with a flat piece of wood for burr removal and a microfiber cloth.
Edit: I also added the sharpal 8x3 leather strop that completes this kit. It sits on the box perfectly and comes with green compound and angle chip for 17.00
Thank you for this video. Excellent information on what looks to be a seriously good stone.
Sometimes it's a nice surprise to prove yourself wrong and spread that knowledge 👍🏻 Thanks for letting us know, happy sharpening.
I got my Sharpal delivered to me in Australia for the same price as you paid (that is unusual!) about two years ago.
I've been delighted with it. It is so flat that I can even use it for stoning my mill's table.
I'm looking to get into whittling and I kept seeing this sponsored by amazon but was skeptical. Thank you so much for your review!
I’ve been using sharpal products for a few years now and the quality and price are amazing, plus the customer service is unmatched. I highly recommend sharpal 👌🏻👍🏻
recently i got into sharpening through your channel. I was trying to get the cheaper diamond stones here in europe but couldnt find anything at the moment. then i saw this stone for just 40€ (44$] and bought that since there wasnt anything else really. i was surprised how well this thing worked for me right out the box even though i didnt have any real sharpening experience beforehand. Seeing you now say that this is a great stone to get sure made me happy, since i wasnt sure if i should have kept looking for other stones that you recommended since this one was "Untested"
Just purchased thanks to you. Love and peace. Tim
I feel so lucky that this is the first stone I ended up buying a few years ago
Absolutely mind boggling to see how far you've come from such a short time period man, keep up the amazing work and phenomenally edited tips tricks and just overall content! 🤙
Thanks a ton!
Got this as my first stone same day after watching your video! Can’t wait to get started learning on this thing and eventually adding a Kuromaku 2 and 5k
