Ah if you guys were wondering this Viola was made by a famous viola maker in 1719. Only 10 were made and this one is the only surviving one that is in perfect condition and able to be played regularly. Interesting stuff.
Tori Volz Yes. Another hundred years or so and it would be older than the entire city/everything around it. That object outdates probably 90%+ of the entire modern city.

I played in a violin of a professional one time and it sounded like I was far more betther tham I was in my normal violin Cheap viola and violins has more wolfs(like one you can hear in 2:03~2:05) and a diferent timbres
Can I put something straight? This is directed at all you people saying, "I wouldn't pay 45 million for a viola," or, "It doesn't sound any different from any other viola," or, "It's not the Viola, it's the violist." 1. You wouldn't pay 45 million for it because (A), you probably don't even know how to play it, or (B), you don't know how valuable it is and can't hear the richness and colors of the tone that resonates from it. And not only its playability and sound, it also has a history. Made in the seventeen hundreds by one of the greatest luthiers in history, Antonio Stradivari. Depending on which Viola it is, it was probably passed down from some guy to another guy and sent as a gift to some other guy and yadda, yadda, yadda. Anyhow, it being 300 years old ALONE makes it priceless. You see, the older a string instrument is, the better it sounds, and the more the wood resonates. Search it up.
2. It doesn't sound any different from other violas? ...What..? If you had a viola, or even heard a normal Viola, or played a normal Viola yourself, you would know that this Stradivari viola is exceptional in tone. Getting this sound out of any other instrument is extremely hard.
3. "It's not the viola, it's the violist." This statement is partially correct, if a beginner played this Stradivari, it will sound horrible, but if David Aaron Carpenter played a cheap viola it wouldn't sound very good. Thank you for taking your time to read this.
I decided to play viola because it was the more unique string instrument. Now I know it has the most unpopular clef and the least variety of music made for it because of that. Pain.
I know. I play by ear, since I left the college orchestra at the end of my 2nd year. But I'm leaning towards Irish music and movie scores, with some famous Alto or high tenor covers like Patsy Cline, Cher, Paul McCartney, The Everly Brothers and The Carpenters. Best of all trying to incorporate movement like Maired Nesmitt from Celtic Woman, or Anna Phoebe from Trans Siberian Orchestra.
1:42 , he literally starts playing three different things all at once, the "bass", middle notes, and the higher ones. the shine of his viola in the light is brighter than three of my futures at least.
There once was a really small lad, (about only a foot and a half tall), who desperately wanted to play cello. His stuttering teacher went to the top maker in town. A very small cello was made for the boy, and when the teacher presented it, he shouted, “viola!” meaning of course to say, “voila!”..... And it stuck And I may have made this up... 🙃

Omg! How beautifully played that was, and what a magnificent sound. I will be getting a Viola very soon to replace my Violin. These videos are making Violas much more popular than they ever were I believe. The huskier voice of Viola is quite an attraction. I love it.

To be lost in the music is the sign of a bad musician and to think that this is the aim of music is a sign of ignorance. One doesn't get lost or be allowed to be lost in good music. You became closer to the music and you feel it more intimately and therefore you are more aware of everything
@@kanatsizkanatli umm no its not. good musicians do get lost in music for solo performance. I think you’re talking about ensembles. Good musicians don’t “get lost” in the music for ensemble performance because they have responsibilities but when solo performing you aren’t paying attention to anyone but you therefore it is OK.
@@kanatsizkanatliI agree he's playing for himself here, playing way too fast and not carrying the listener with him. I get it, I play viola too and this is cello suite 3 prelude. I've played and practiced it a million times it's ok to run some parts fast but you have to stop and smell the roses too. Well that's the way I interpret bach you have to observe the signposts along the way, remembering that the listener maybe it's his first time hearing it. But he doesn't get that idea. Playing it like one big cadenza.
I'm a musician and trust me, is not the person who plays the instrument, you can have the best musician in front... But if the instrument is not well developed, you would listen to a poor performance. it all depends on the instrument, the type of wood, how many years it has of existence, if you bought it by a lutherian or any other store, etc.
I think that it's both the artist and the instrument. It does make a difference in sound quality if you play a well crafted instrument, but if you do not have the skill, it isn't possible to truly sound nice on a higher quality instrument. At least, that's what I have taken from listening to myself and other musicians.
@@lincolnyonghaozhang7965 doesnt matter. he could pay 20 billion but wouldnt ever get a violia as good as that one again. Unless he brought Antonio Stradivari back to life and then waited around 300 years for the wood to age
mlaro888 This is actually real! If a musician plays really in tune, it sounds like a bunch of other notes are also being played. It's the overtone series at work. This is also why a good barber shop quartet sounds like there's like 20 guys singing - they're all so in tune that their chords get extra notes.
mlaro888 in music there is something called the pyramid of sound. It is a structure of how much of each sound you need. ( bass is on the bottom and soprano instruments at the top). When you get the right balance of power like In a barbershop quartet or the right strings on the viola it makes the sound fuller and sound bigger than it actually is.
Even though I'm a violinist myself, I can surely and boldly say that this viola sounds like a $45 million viola. Being raised in the orchestral environment, it's very easy to say that the viola is not the most flattering or loved instrument in the string family...but this man with his technique (and the instrument quality) have proven that a viola could be just as beautiful and appreciated as any other instrument. God stand by me when I say this is the first time I've truly appreciated the viola in my entire orchestral career..
Instruments like that have lives of their own that are much longer than ours. Imagine anything surviving intact for 300 years and still being playable! It's truly priceless, but the monetary value is to make sure it gets the protection of being in the hands of people who REALLY REALLY want it and will protect it and appreciate it while they are its custodians. No one truly owns something like that, it truly belongs to everyone who hears it.
Lol. At first I thought this comment was childish, but when I listened to that part I totally got what you’re saying. It’s a great performance, but his execution of that one chord is a bit harsh.
Zane Wilkerson old comment thread but whatever. Having played this piece many times, that chord and the one following it are really difficult to pull off well after you've been doing so many sixteenth notes for three minutes. It's easy to get really into a performance and no matter how great you sound up until then, you have to really coax that chord out of the instrument so it doesn't sound like... well, a car horn. Yeah it's dissonant but if you don't let each note sustain properly when you roll the chord, it just sounds messy. I say this having made that mistake almost every time I've played this piece lmao
It's not the Stradi making the music beautiful, it's the massive, beautiful, specially designed concert hall with great big echoing walls that amplify the sound. I wanna hear a Stradivarius viola played in a carpeted room!
That probably exists somewhere, is made of Neutronium, has the signature of god on it and can't be safely handled by humans without radioactive protection gear.
You can just feel it with him, the passion to play something like that and just the sound floods you. We miss you Stratovani you are a true hero in the music world and a Craftsman we will never be able to replicate until we get a time machine.
Hmm, let's record a $45 million instrument with deep, rich sound on audio equipment that doesn't have the dynamic range to record the sound, then compress the audio further thru the internet, and then have viewers listened to the soda straw thin mimic of the actual sound on speakers and headphones that cannot even translate the already internet compressed audio files and say, "This is what a $45 million sounds like." Yeah, that should do the instrument justice....
I was walking down my school hallway with my viola in my hand and this old lady goes “what a nice ukulele you have” Let’s just say she won’t be insulting any other violists for quite a while

Samuel Scarisbrick what a fool you are :-D It's your OWN soul that puts bad thoughts into my sentence. It wasn't meant to be mean. Actually it was a comment with a good thought. I love people who have passion and are able to express it. Hope you're able to let more peace and love into your heart. Get well soon. God bless you.
Well 90% Of TH-cam comments express anger or hate in some way. I apologize if I took yours in a manner that it wasn't meant for. On another note, my heart has plenty of love and peace in it, no need to question that. Get off your high horse and accept a mistake was made :)
Samuel Scarisbrick Apologize accepted. Have a happy & cozy Christmas. Bye
luticia Apology* (comment meant in good spirit) you too! Seasons blessings!
Omg! How beautifully played that was, and what a magnificent sound. I will be getting a Viola very soon to replace my Violin. These videos are making Violas much more popular than they ever were I believe. The huskier voice of Viola is quite an attraction. I love it.
Ew
@@LorenaBla2208 ew to you hater
Carry on, the Viola is a beautiful and underestimated musical instrument
good
hand it over, I'll make it sound like a $10 one with two strings you found at some garage sale.
Real skill
I bought one of these beauties a few weeks ago on Amazon. Best purchase decision ever! And thanks to the free shipping, I was able to afford it.
wait.. you bought a 45 mio $ violin on amazon??
He's like begging to get ripped off
Is this some kind of a joke or are you really this rich??😵
Asmita He couldn't have been able to afford it with shipping. Come on.
nice troll bruh.
You could see the notes coming out of his eyebrows
I was going to say that!
Gerad Vindicating i was looking for this
Best comment of the video.
Gerad Vindicating hah
Yesh 🤣
Rick Harrison:
I mean the bow is used and the instrument has been played a lot.
The best i can do is 40$ and im taking a big risk here seriously.
😂
I mean I know it's worth a lot, but I have a business to run here. I don't know much about strats, but I have a friend that will know everything there is to know about the instrument.
Expert- well Rick, I could see it going for around 1000 in a competitive auction.
Yea but he needs to hold on it for like 10 years before someone buys it
$45 million viola recorded on a $100 microphone
Best commentary
And uploaded to TH-cam in a compressed video file. Bliss.
In a room with crappy reverb...
+Eric Kanervaa and still sounds better than average
It sounds so middle-ey its driving me insane
I love watching the expressions of a passionate musician
Go watch Lars Ulrich from Metallica he is the human personification of entertainment
RememberRox yeah . its look like he's grinding on 45 millions.
me, whose expressions always look like i'm constipated: 👁👄👁
@@padmabalaji9283 exactly i dont get how anyone could look so graceful while getting so passionate i just look like i havent pooped in 10 years
Has chance to play $45 million Viola.
Plays cello piece
omglolgiraffe There aren't many great viola solos. viola is mainly used in orchestras. on a $45 million viola you are going to want to explore the full range, both literally and with expression
WE NEED MORE VIOLA SOLOS
What's the difference between those two?
St. Ann a cello is a large standup instrument, for the bass end
+St. Ann YES!!! Thank you! Violas for DAYYYYSSSS! Violas everywhere! Violas just because...VIOLAS ROCK!
The way he makes bow changes unnoticeable is so beautiful
Pawn Stars: *I can do $120*
GameStop: *we'll take it for $10*
*in store credit
Not counting the service fee which is 50 dollars. Now you owe me 40, with the tax it will be 45 thank you!
Also he is taking a huge risk,it wud take space in his shop.🤣
>This is is what a $45 million viola sounds like after undergoing TH-cam's audio compression off of a crappy on-board laptop sound output through cheap head phones.
yes.. it's awful. even on my 250$ headphones
hakurimakamuri there's a limit to quality...
It sounds amazing on my headphones :D
Still sounds amazing but not as good as it would be in person.
There's some an eq cut-off, pop filter or something altering the sound.
let's all agree that this dude can make a potato sound good
lol
loll dude best comment
Dude he got 3 notes wrong; he sucks
He can play my potatoes
...
This instrument is exactly the same age as the piece being played. Bach could have had this piece played on this particular viola.
No ones gonna say it? Alright. That’s pretty awesome. :)
and the sound didnt deteriorate over time? genuinely curious if sounds from well maintained old instruments sound the same as when they were initially made
@@kathrinevanezasierra4312 some people think that older instruments sound better, actually. I’m not sure though
@@kathrinevanezasierra4312 with string instruments not so much, but for more mechanical instruments like the piano or harpsichord they do depreciate over time.
That's really cool!
Today, on Pawn Stars,
You bought that Viola for $45 million?
Let me call my guy.
The best I can do is $5.
Amanda Pritts
He knows a guy who deals in Viola's worth as much as the GDP of small island countries.
"Hey, this is a business; I gotta make money here too"
come on man can you go up a little from the $5 and meet me at $44 million?
adam cisneros how about a entire 5 dollars and 4 cents
Don't let it fly with United.
hee hee\
Seriously! Handcuff it to your wrist if you fly.
Hahahahahahahhahhaha
I wish there were less reverb so we could hear the core tone of it, but regardless, it sounds really amazing :)
im subbed to you :)
Nope, you're more amazing
Isn't that just the viola, and why its so expensive?
out of topic, you need to do a Nausicaa Symphonic Poem cover.
ZiggyTheDawg just a viola? it's not that simple ;)
violiniist just THE viola, not just a viola. No worries, i play the viola, and i meant that the reverb ***** mentioned was in part due to the viola being so well ,made, rather than an added effect.
so passionate, Must be incredible to lose yourself in the music like that, he is somewhere else during this performance.
marvtheandroid agree - he lives what he does here
To be lost in the music is the sign of a bad musician and to think that this is the aim of music is a sign of ignorance. One doesn't get lost or be allowed to be lost in good music. You became closer to the music and you feel it more intimately and therefore you are more aware of everything
@@kanatsizkanatli ew
The viola is so beautiful
lol no one agrees
Yessss
@@chrisnoon2704 I smell a jealous violin

Sacrilegious!
The artist determines whether or not its garbage or not
Yes and no, the instrument does play a role in the richness and sound of the music....but not necessarily a $45,000,000 role xD
Have you ever heard the story, "Touch of the Master's Hand?" You should look it up. :)
I was just about to say that! My grandfather always used to recite that
I'm a musician and trust me, is not the person who plays the instrument, you can have the best musician in front...
Rumor has it......his eyes havent opened
😂😂😂
The Biking Police he opened his eyes at 3:20 🤦♂️
I never knew Brock could play the viola

that man is a billionaire
Sacrilegious
@@lincolnyonghaozhang7965 doesnt matter. he could pay 20 billion but wouldnt ever get a violia as good as that one again. Unless he brought Antonio Stradivari back to life and then waited around 300 years for the wood to age

A violin could never.
A viola did never...

It's funny & awesome that the better a musician gets, the more they sound like 3 or 4 musicians playing at once.
mlaro888 This is actually real! If a musician plays really in tune, it sounds like a bunch of other notes are also being played. It's the overtone series at work. This is also why a good barber shop quartet sounds like there's like 20 guys singing - they're all so in tune that their chords get extra notes.
I know :) it's so cool! Thanks for the insights, I'm interested to know more and exact science behind it just out of curiosities sake. :D
mlaro888 in music there is something called the pyramid of sound. It is a structure of how much of each sound you need. ( bass is on the bottom and soprano instruments at the top). When you get the right balance of power like In a barbershop quartet or the right strings on the viola it makes the sound fuller and sound bigger than it actually is.
Don't forget the fact that there's some reverberation in that room. A dry signal of a viola doesn't sound as big or full.
The secret is that the best musicians are actually stacks of smaller musicians in a trenchcoat.
listens on $10 earbuds: "Idk man sounds the same"
mood
Even though I'm a violinist myself, I can surely and boldly say that this viola sounds like a $45 million viola. Being raised in the orchestral environment, it's very easy to say that the viola is not the most flattering or loved instrument in the string family...but this man with his technique (and the instrument quality) have proven that a viola could be just as beautiful and appreciated as any other instrument. God stand by me when I say this is the first time I've truly appreciated the viola in my entire orchestral career..
Nobody cares
+l8Os Dude, she cares. If you don't care, why did you comment?
if it's took you that long to appreciate a viola, then your "orchestra career" must not have been very rigorous.
I'm a proud Viola player
Harry Potter Yes, Harry. After ending your wizarding career, you took up music (:
Worth every penny! That's one sweet viola...wow. Close as any of us will get to one, thanks for posting.
Never heard of a "Million" viola, but it sounds pretty good for $45.
I see what you did there ;D
haha well done son
LOL
AimlessMoto lmao
No Name *savage*
Instruments like that have lives of their own that are much longer than ours. Imagine anything surviving intact for 300 years and still being playable! It's truly priceless, but the monetary value is to make sure it gets the protection of being in the hands of people who REALLY REALLY want it and will protect it and appreciate it while they are its custodians. No one truly owns something like that, it truly belongs to everyone who hears it.
well .. that's a nice imitation from an Car Horn at 2:41
Lol. At first I thought this comment was childish, but when I listened to that part I totally got what you’re saying. It’s a great performance, but his execution of that one chord is a bit harsh.
lol nah I disagree the composer obviously wrote a dissonant chord there so it makes sense that he interpreted it by playing the chord itself harshly
@@iCyclone ok
I can't unhear the car horn
It's not the Stradi making the music beautiful, it's the massive, beautiful, specially designed concert hall with great big echoing walls that amplify the sound.
I wanna hear a Stradivarius viola played in a carpeted room!
I'm waiting for a $2 trillion triangle video smh

the viola is 45 millions, but the microphone they used to record this is like... $10?

You read my mind! I was thinking...what's with the poor sound quality?
The mic is probably fine. It's the room that is at fault.

I’m so poor I can’t afford to pay attention.
Hmm, let's record a $45 million instrument with deep, rich sound on audio equipment that doesn't have the dynamic range to record the sound, then compress the audio further thru the internet, and then have viewers listened to the soda straw thin mimic of the actual sound on speakers and headphones that cannot even translate the already internet compressed audio files and say, "This is what a $45 million sounds like."
Yeah, that should do the instrument justice....
Ayy Lmao
it sounds like you know a little about sound
