      Andy B it's always the case, but it gets glossed over by doing what everyone else is doing as long as the people telling them what to do gets paid.

      Jenny said she attended a networking event that got her an interview. I've personally had an interview from a networking event too and can recommend networking events as good ways to find work. I'm about to update my LinkedIn profile as I've heard that's a great place to find work too.

      @@Kim_Naine The interview from the networking event? We went for a quick coffee and I didn't end up getting that job. I did get a job from an interview that an employment agency got me though. I'm a website tester now and I'm loving it. Hoping to be a developer one day. All you can do is bring what you have and have fun while you're at the interview. It's got to be a good fit for you and a good fit for the company ideally. Just like if somebody likes somebody else but they don't like them back. It's amazing when two people both like one another to be more than just friends.
      I never ended up doing much with my LinkedIn profile.
      Are you looking for work Kim?

    To me, the best expression she said is "Don t be lazy". It's always difficult to express myself when I struggle with job hunting. After watching this clip, I realized that problems making me difficult are my personality of being lazy and not selling myself in person. Although I want to be perfect, with fear in my mind to challenge creative things I hate to do that, postpone, eventually let it go. But she encourage me to change my mind.
    I will and can do it!!

    I like Jenny's approach: find the important people in positions of power in companies, make a good impression on them, then maybe they will like you enough to hire you. It sounds like a more creative and effective way of searching for a job rather than submitting a CV and just being another faceless applicant. I think I will try to use this approach to find a job among the other traditional ones.
    However, what I also get out of this talk is that job market still prefers to use nepotism to fill employee positions than meritocracy. No surprise there.

    • @incubus_the_man

    • @ppoint432
      @ppoint432 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Fashionablykat It confirmed to be that the job market is still much more about who you know and if the company can trust your character and skillset, rather than choosing the best candidate.
      If I wanted a good job in business, I'd rather try to be an entrepreneur or small business owner than beg some company or corporation to give me a job.

    "Does that mean that these people that didn't take the conventional path are unable to learn to become the top performers in your corporation?" You could be missing out on "really fresh creative ideas because they don't come from the conventional profile that you're looking for."
    So well said! As someone who has taken an interesting career path, I really appreciated hearing this perspective and I couldn't agree more.

    Boy I just graduated December of 2015 with a BA in sociology and it's been hell trying to find a job. And I am only looking for entry level positions like retail/sales or personal banking but nothing. I went on an interview 2 days ago for a part time position at sprint which I stated I wanted full time and I have an interview this Thursday at t-mobile. I promised my self if I can't find anything before the end of summer I am joining the AirForce.

    • @jesseleeward8749
      @jesseleeward8749 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Edward Polanco I think that BAs are best used as supporting degrees. You could use the degree to get yourself into an advanced postgraduate field of study. If you learn how to use Adobe Software and use it to make some videos, maybe to explain sociological concepts, then you can prove your ability with that software.
      (I did Double Glazing and concreting immediately after Uni, what do I know?)

    • @lemmiwinks0252
      @lemmiwinks0252 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jesse Lee Ward true but the thing I don't want to go back to school. Currently I don't have any debt and I don't want to get into unnecessary debt by getting a degree just so I can compete with ppl who probably have the same degree as me. But I would like to do something with technology or Buisness since those two fields are growing everyday.

    • @jesseleeward8749
      @jesseleeward8749 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Edward Polanco Neat. Very unlike sociology students I have met who kind of stifle themselves. They reject money in order to punish themselves for their unearned privilege. And then complain about those with even more unearned privileges in our society. You must have had good, positive, teachers, sometimes I wonder what students are being fed when I hear people my age make the simplest tasks sound impossibly difficult. But good for you!

      +Jesse Lee Ward thx dude me personally I just look at the world around me and tend to watch the news as well and currently the job market sucks. Plus I look at my friends and see all the debt they have gotten into. Plus I am still relatively young (only 25) so I'll think of something

      My friend graduated with a degree in International Business and worked in retail for ages. He quit. He, too, is having a hard time finding a job.
      I have a degree in English, have one internship, and two years of teaching under my belt. I want to quit Education because I found it impossible to complete college credits for Alt. Licensure in two years. So hard... My professor told me that he agreed with me: the program is designed to weed out prospective teacher candidates with crushing work-loads.
      Good luck with your teaching plan. Mine didn't work out and I'm applying to a grocery store job and might even move to another state to look for work. Hopefully things will work out for the future and all of us millennials. Here's to us.

Whatever I major in, the most crucial thing in terms of job-hunting is to make myself convincing that I won't give up despite any rejections. No matter what industry or level of experience a job seeker has, often the searching for employment can be long one. But I was really impressed from her speech. I think that Job search can be a lonely and depressing, filled with questions and concerns. In addition, I don't have enough experience for a certain type of job. So, It was so nice she kept her in mind as being a valuable part of a team of Professionals. I'll also find a way to emphasize my value to employers.

    I am really appreciate for your saying, Jenny. I was touched by several things. First of all, chance is given to people who are trying to get it. Second, try to think differently. Actually before I am striving to get a job, I haven't noticed how its process is hard and have less confidence about myself. But now, I believe I would keep going with enthusiasm and be a lucky person to get the chance!

    Competition for jobs has gotten very fierce, and much more difficult than it use to be. We have to win the cut-throat competiton in the job market. I think that self-confident is very important for surviving in the job market. If i am feeling confident in my own abilities, it can influence the outcome of my schoolwork and possibly my future employment prospects.

    From my experience I feel that selling yourself as cheap as possible is what gets the job done in the sense of job hunting. Anyone is just looking for more bang for their buck. The downfall to volunteering is that you can't count on retaining the information. Also your starting pay is probably going to stay the same, for a very long time. When you have free time, volunteer. You can add that to a resume and you will make some money most likely. People should look more in grants for internships for small business because most of the small businesses need a lot of work and that sometimes puts them in the places you don't want to work bin, and people should respect that bin.

    Good job not getting disheartened at the 1 year mark. You made it! ;).

    The traditional path of graduating from college and sending a mass load of CV is not the most effective way to being hired. Taking time off can be seem as lazy but it can also bring valuable experiences. Moreover, the job hunt can continue while travelling, by meeting new people and looking at new cultural innovations one might just come up to discover a new business idea or strategy! Great talk!

      @20quid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +p s It may not be the only thing that lands somebody that job, but if you think it won't help then you're just wrong.
      The world is very much biased towards people who are extroverts, who are phyisically good looking, who went to a fancy university, or who have enough money to buy sharp clothes or a flash car. Those people are overwhelmingly represented in top companies across the world and it's because every single person has an unconscious bias towards introverts, towards fat people, towards shy people, or bald people. They have to work that much harder, or pretend to be something they're not, just to get on in life, and it is actually denying companies the talent and diversity of opinion that could drive them forward.
      If you think we live in a meritocracy instead of an old-boys club, then I'm afraid your view of our society is a delusion.
