I feel like the "f the patriarchy line" has to do with the expectations he put on her. He's "empowering" her by letting her drive and do other "traditionally masculine things," but he's doing it on his terms, not hers. The most interesting part to me is the "key chain on the ground line." This implies that either she did not catch the keys in the first place or she later dropped them. Whether his expectations were too heavy for her to carry or too difficult to grasp in the first place, she ended up disappointing him because she could not live up to his perceived idea of a "strong, independent woman." Compare this to how Taylor describes her relationship in the Lover album, how she has embraced her femininity and independence on her own terms. And not only this, she receives support and validation from her significant other, rather than permission.
Something just clicked for me when you said, "I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to." It reminds me of Better Man, especially where she says, "Saying to myself, you know you had to do it/I know the bravest thing I ever did was run." Like in BM she has to keep reminding herself why it's better that it's over, and ATW she's saying if she forgets about him she can forget why it had to be over. Two sides of the same emotion. There are a lot of parallels between the two songs, in my opinion!
I totally get it coz I forget about the reasons why I need to forget my ex and keep going back. Not this time though, I'm remembering every little thing he did aswell as the bigger issues.
My favorite thing about the video was the gaslighting scene. Now I interpret her saying I was there, I remember it differently. I used to think it was just reminiscing but now I see it as like “you gaslighted me and tried to convince me that that’s not what happened but I was there and I remember it and I realized what you were doing when I was outside of the relationship.”
I feel differently about the "i forget about you long enough, to forget why I needed to" line. I see it in a way that she has begun to move forward from the pain of it, for a good amount of time (i forget about you long enough), that the anger and upset etc is reduced. That she then starts reflecting on the good aspects of the relationship more, not hanging so much on the hurt, then (i forget about why i needed to). Leading beautifully back into the good memory and next lines "cause there we are again, in the middle of the night, dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light". I've really enjoyed this video, and the rest of the interpretations of the song. Obviously everyone's opinion is different, so I'm not saying I'm right, it's just how I picture it.
this was amazing omg i could literally talk about her lyrics for HOURS, alsoo what you said about the outro part was so interesting! bc i always interpreted the fading out repetition of the 'i was there, i was there' as her memories flashing before her eyes over and over again as shes trying to move on BUUUT its also like shes convincing herself that it did happen and it was real??? thats so cool
I think she hints at the gaslighting and the feeling like it wasn't real at the start of the music video it's like "are you real? I feel like I made you up" It's like she feels it all happened so quickly and it also links to lyrics in the song red "loving him was like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street"
It's so cool to listen to someone who is as deeply into something as you are! I love how the whole Red basically tells us a story. On 1989 we have secret messages that do something similar but on Red the songs are actually connected with each other. I'm really glad that I could listen to your thoughts about this song. I feel like my friends are pretty tired of me talking about Taylor so it's nice to see that there are more people obsessed with her :)
i totally relate with the lyrics of the all too well 10 min version because this thing happened to me! Especially the part when nena says about jake gaslighting her telling that it wasn't true love, but taylor says she "remembers it all too well" and it was love, and magical, and MUTUAL.
I loved it, i watch it as i was having breakfast on my break and i didn´t realize the 28 minutes were gone, so acurate your breakdown, i hope you can make more.
i saw someone say that the lyric ‘i still remember the first fall of snow and how it glistened as it fell’ was a callback to treacherous where she knew that the relationship was going to end badly, but it was still good and still real.
I was kind of very sleepy and then when I saw your video I watched it all, not even yawned once =)) It helps me a lot to understand more about the lyric cause this song is one of my best loved songs besides Getaway Car. Your way of talking is really captivating, great job!
i loved watching this, thanks nena!! also when taylor sang "i was never good at telling jokes but the punchline goes...," it reminded me of the line "i think it's strange that you think i'm funny 'cause he never did" from begin again!
Omg thinking about The Moment I Knew and I’m so sad about it. She was wearing her beautiful dress and red lipstick and was waiting for so long for him to come to her birthday party BUT DANG IT HE DIDNT COME. After that he just came to say sorry that he didn’t make it. So that was the moment she knew that he wasn’t the Mr. Right?
She was never more than arm candy to him. And speaking of the scarf as a metaphor for her "innocence", remember the line "A new notch in your belt is all I'll ever be" in IKYWT?
This song resonates with me so much.. I am currently going through a similar situation and this song hits me to the core every single time. I know all the words by heart and I cry everytime I listen to it. Feels like it is speaking to my soul.
I feel like she wanted to create kind of a parallel between the very beginning and the end of the song with the first line being "I walk through the door WITH YOU" and saying at the end "Now you bring back my things and I walk home ALONE". That underlines the reminder of the scarf between "I left my SCARF at your sister's house" and "But you keep my old SCARF from that very first week" just like everything went back to the beginning but now all seem to be switched. It makes me think of a loop from "The air was cold" to "The first fall of snow" : like her memories, time keeps going in circles and perpetually brings her back to remember... To remember it all too well. ❤
did you think maybe for the I'm a soldier who's returning half her weight line could be referring to the fact that in the 2013-14-15ish years, how she had an eating disorder and maybe a bit of the backlash from him making her insecure was that? idk maybe not

Am I the only one who thinks Better man is about John Mayer and not Jake Gyllenhaal? The lyrics in BM closely resemble the relationship in Dear John. Not to mention she sounded really young in the leaked demo recording like she might have recorded it in 2011 during speak-now pre-red era.

I’m still confused about “from when your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones” because like, wasn’t he from LA…? But anyway, loved this video! This was everything
Some people say that "Brooklyn broke" is meant to poke at his fake hipster way of dressing. I like that theory, it does fit with his persona. It's also possible (but maybe a bit of a stretch) that if the rest of that verse compares their relationship with going to war, "Brooklyn" could be the alcoholic drink, like a metonymy to drinking. As in a way to say whenever he drank, their fights would get worse.

I’ve been a Swiftie since Fearless but All Too Well has been my very favoritest TS song from the first time I ever heard it. I went to the Era’s Tour in Vegas Night One (for my 1st ever Taylor concert) & hearing the 10min version live was absolutely epic! Literally a moment I’ll never forget, best lyrics, songwriting & overall sound. LOVED it! ❤❤❤
I became a swifty 1 week before this album came out and I was really into folklore at the time. My mother passed away 4 days before the album came out and I completely forgot about it and this album immediately became my favourite after I listened to it. [Red (Taylor’s Version) + Grief = good feeling!!👍👍]

Just had a revelation. Could 'Down the stairs/ I was there/ I was there' from ATW be related to 'Last night I heard my own heart beating/ Sounded like footsteps on my stairs' from If this was a movie ?? Seems like it makes sense to me because it could work with a lot of their lyrics (aaand with the video because the lyrics are 'Come back, come back, come back to me like/ You could, you could if you just said you're sorry/ I know that we could work it out somehow' and in the 10mns version video He says 'sorry' over and over again until she's not upset anymore sooooo????) Could these 2 songs be related??? Are they about the same person? Were they written during the same time? I don't know. Makes sense to me but maybe I'm just making connections up😂😂😂
The lyric in the official lyric video is actually "You taught me about your past", which has a wholly different implied meaning than "told" or "tell" which seems to be the word used in the original ATW. Three months is a short amount of time for a relationship to do so much damage. I think it all makes a lot more sense if you assume that he did take her virginity. This is every Swiftie’s dream!
I think the part that she says “From when your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones
I'm a soldier who's returning half her weight”
She means that just like people from Brooklyn who are known for speaking very harshly and aggressively at times. And she is probably saying that she doesn’t have thick skin, which is why she mentioned that his Brooklyn broke her skin and bones. So every time they had an argument, she compares it to a battle because after all these arguments were his “Brooklyn broke [her] skin and bones” she gave it her all in those battles to the point where she feels like a soldier that’s returning half her weight.
