Watching Rollins develop over the course of decades is so fascinating. Not too many people have had media fixating on their personality and lifestyle for decades like he has, or at least not many people as introspective as he is. Look at his writing or any video you can find of him from the 80s and 90s and he seemed like a wild animal, just a ball of muscle lashing out in hostility and fear. I think this version of him was probably buried underneath that the whole time, just a really kind soul reacting to the world around him.

I used to take care of Henry when he would shop at Wax Trax Records when he came through Denver. Great guy! Incredibly smart and fun to talk to! And what an inspiration!
Man, I already liked Henry Rollins, this interview elevated him to a new level. The interweaving of eccentricity, thoughtfulness, drive, unsilenceable, adventure and yearning to understand the world makes for one of the most interesting humans beings to have the privilege to watch discuss. I loved how rollins refused to rise to rogan's "hurrdurr how bout that trump" bait. Keeping politics out of it was admirable to me, like his leaving swearing behind. But in the last 20 minutes or so rollins seemed to change his mind and ranted politics after all. A dissapointing ending.
I don’t know much about Henry Rollins, but he’s got a wonderful spirit, he’s so aware of his demons, he’s vulnerable. Awesome human being. One observation I learned from Brene Brown-when you don’t want to just ‘hang out with someone’ as you are, but you’d drive to the ends of the earth to bail a friend out of jail, dude, you just don’t feel worthy of hanging out with someone unless you can help or rescue them. If you can ‘do for them’ it puts you in an elevated state-above them, so you have value. You’re so good as you are! Just an observation from someone who’s been there.
Weird how people are surprised that cunts like Nugent etc are actually people too with senses of humour?? ofc they are doesn't mean they can't fuck off as well tho . Still i get it tho if you grew up a fan.
Well said. We live in a ridiculously divisive sociopolitical environment right now. Everyone screaming from their echo chambers across an arbitrary line they drew to keep anyone with a differing opinion away. I understand that politics are divisive to an extent by nature, but it was never supposed to supercede our common humanity.
I’m sorry, I’m always down to have a productive conversation with anyone(about anything) and I listen to Rogan every day but I hate when he gives these awful people, with the worst, most hateful opinions, and says “but he’s a really good guy, despite the things he says.” Either he believes the garbage he says, or he’s a merchant of hate (as joe implies), either way he’s the worst of human beings, sorry....

how are you great friends with someone you vehemently disagree with in the first place? clinging on to old memories from childhood that keep you in touch on facebook? I dont mind listening to someone with differing opinions but theres so many people in this world it doesnt make sense to consent to being friends and hang around with someone you vehemently disagree with
The Rollins JRE's are some of the most interesting and watchable of the lot. He's intelligent, interesting, articulate, humane and polite. It's rare to see a guest that clearly blows Joe's mind and tbh I think Joe has a bit of a man-crush on Henry. Very enjoyable and easy to watch in one go, from start to finish.
Henry Rollins has been an inspiration for me because of his honesty. I don't always agree with him, but I do respect him. Integrity is defined by Henry Rollins.
I always wished Henry could be my uncle. I’ve seen him live like 5 times through various countries and everytime he talks he teaches me something new. He is a great, enigmatic individual!
Two very masculine, tough, tatted up dudes talking about yoga and training with 70yr old ladies - that cracked me up! Great conversation from both JR and HR...really enjoyed this one.
I'm 22 and I genuinely don't see how I would have any close friends or my own kids in the future, but that's ok - I actually very much like that idea. I personally love life for reasons other than relationships, even though I understand how beautiful they can be. I think this is the first time I've seen someone who I can relate with toward this lifestyle, and it's mind blowing for some reason.
Life is lived to gain experience, that leads to betterment; be it spiritual, mental, or physical. Usually all 3 after awhile, but not at first. You cant become a better conduit of consciousness when you focus on frivolous shit. Slow down and think. Breathe. Watch sunsets. Listen to the wind or the birds. Smell the foliage or the rain or snow in the air. Observe the beauty of nature, less the beauty of human constructs. Listen to yourself when your mind is clear, and learn to trust your intuition. Remember and learn from the mistakes and the past. Perhaps most importantly, dont have any fuckin children lol Adopt, dont add to the over-population.
I have been loosely aware of Henry Rollins for most of my life, but until now I had no idea what an admirable individual he is. He inspires me to want to be a better version of myself. Going to do myself a favor and see if hes touring near me
Got into Henry Rollins stand ups and interviews this past year and he's really empowered me in a lot of ways. It's just interesting how much of an understanding of himself he has; what makes him tick and how he gets motivated.
I noticed that as well Joe loves this guy you gotta be extra unique if you shut joe up for a bit because he has spoken to so many different interesting people on his podcast
I love Henry Rollins. I find him really relatable. In some ways he's a more extreme, intense, driven version of me. One thing though, Slovenia is really not rough. Not at all. One of the lowest crime rates in the world. Even when it was part of Yugoslavia, it was by far the nicest part.
That also caught my attention... being from Balkan region all I can say is that during Yugoslavia days Slovenia was always considered a good place for life, with beautiful and clean nature, good food, rich culture, modest, polite and educated people and very low crime rates... in 2004 I went there for the first time and witnesed mentioned things...
He never married but does date - he just keeps the relationships very low key. I don't think he likes people focusing on that part of his personal life because it doesn't have anything to do with anything.
I've been listening to Henry's spoken word records and reading his books since 1995. It never gets old. One of the most interesting speakers I've ever heard.
Charlie Unwinder McDonald would literally be the first guest Joe literally would have to kick off the show live lol. Joe likes to pretend he is interested in all perspectives but there are still some places he dare not wander especially live on air.
Charlie Unwinder Norm doesn't like Joe, he has said a few bad things about him now on radio appearances (about Joe thinking he's some intellectual etc.)
Ian MacKaye from Minor Threat, Fugazi and Dischord Records would be an amazing guest. I thought after having Henry Rollins as a guest it was just a matter of time, but it didn't happened.
Great interview. I was born in 1980 in North Carolina and I grew up with no running water. I grew up having to bathe and wash clothes in the river. I didn't get to live with running water until I went to college at 18. I can testify to the effect of not growing up with running water. It is very difficult to have dignity and self esteem when you can't clean yourself or your clothes, especially going to school where everyone else has running water and takes it for granted. And it affects you your whole life. The segment on having running water and dignity really hit home for me, it's importance for getting people out of poverty can't be overstated. Thank you Joe Rogan and Henry Rollins.
@Simon Kalimanus Nardwaur has roots in the Vancouver Punk scene and is part of the alt-media. A beta hero. Rogan is too Alpha and mainstream for Jello, maybe.
I could listen to Henry Rollins talk for hours on end... Listening to him talk about various things, (past and present) and just all the fascinating things he's done and various places he's been to, etc, etc... Well, listening to him is all encompassing for someone such as myself... Fascinating guy...
These two are great. Thanks for bringing Rollins back. I hope he becomes a regular like Duncan. Please also consider having singer Chris Isaak on the podcast.

I think he's really leveled off in his age, like he said as he's almost 60 he tries not to be overbearing...I never knew he had such social anxiety, it explains a lot about his behavior in his youth...
He's certainly not switched on when it comes to political issues. This was an enjoyable podcast till Rollins started talking about world events and politics and made an absolute idiot of himself.
7:21 I was sitting on a curb with 5 or 6 classmates by our high school and I said something mean about someone that wasn't hanging with us at the time. One of the guys turned to one of the other guys and said, "you're right, he does always say mean things about people". That was well over 30 years ago and I have never forgot him saying that. I needed to hear that. I vowed from then on to be nice to everyone. Sometimes its a struggle lol, but those words really opened my eyes to how I treated others and I began to change from that point in time.
I don't think Joe likes that type of music really. He wouldn't know much about Danzig and I'd be willing to bet somehow Danzig wouldn't appreciate Joe's humor and walk out halfway through.
Danzig, as a singer/songwriter, is one of the best. Danzig, in a long-form conversation, would not be very entertaining. He would most likely give short, whispery, answers with absolutely zero enthusiasm. The times I spoke briefly with him I'm the 90s, he was kind of a prick to those around him. Then again....same thing could be said about Rollins back then (being a prick). Just my .02 cents.
I think Henry Rollins is one of the most interesting, intelligent, and war-hearted man out there. Great episode. Thank you, Joe Rogan and Henry Rollins. Really appreciated the time.

Henry Rollins is infinitely entertaining... Put him with Joe Rogan... Conversational perfection..
I used to take care of Henry when he would shop at Wax Trax Records when he came through Denver. Great guy! Incredibly smart and fun to talk to! And what an inspiration!
The Rev. Bob Channel Any great stories to tell when u were with him? This man is intriguing. He's alone but he never seems lonely.
Man, I already liked Henry Rollins, this interview elevated him to a new level. The interweaving of eccentricity, thoughtfulness, drive, unsilenceable, adventure and yearning to understand the world makes for one of the most interesting humans beings to have the privilege to watch discuss. New life goal: see Henry Rollins live on stage.

Henry Rollins seems like an incredibly logical person.
I am inspired by Rollins on a regular basis and I consider him a hero. It is so hard to find alpha humans in the modern day that are educated, empathetic and well spoken that are also not devoured by materialism and ego.

I love these episodes with Henry Rollins. You should get Jello Biafra, would love to see you two interact.
Statistically, water is usually wet.
It's fine to vehemently disagree with someone's opinions and still be great friends with them... crazy this is such a shocking statement these days.
I understand that politics are divisive to an extent by nature, but it was never supposed to supercede our common humanity.
turgid fungus You epitomize the problem. Calling Nugent a cunt because you disagree with him is a perfect example of what the OC was talking about.
I dont mind listening to someone with differing opinions but theres so many people in this world it doesnt make sense to consent to being friends and hang around with someone you vehemently disagree with
Im amazed they can have the same conversation 2 years later and not notice...

This is good stuff. His approach to beating depression is awesome.
Perhaps most importantly, dont have any fuckin children lol

One thing though, Slovenia is really not rough. Not at all. One of the lowest crime rates in the world. Even when it was part of Yugoslavia, it was by far the nicest part.

Joe Rogan you really truly need to speak with Glen Danzig on your show! You k ow we all want to know about the misfits danzig deal for real
Glenn Danzig is a POS!
They could talk about kitty litter and French onion soup.
Omg Glen and Joe together that would be hilarious.
