These space sets remakes radiate with passion and love from designers. I love that you can tell they loved lego as kids and want to share their enjoyment with the next generation
@@TiagoCatarino I just watched it. i loved it. Theres passion in this project. I can't wait for people from my generation to do remakes of sets we enjoyed as kids.
I kinda like the old school robot build. It proves you don't need a million hyper-specific specially molded parts to build one thing, but you can take a few basic bits and bobs and build them into a million different things.
I’m glad you recognized that. That was my first thought as well. I liked how unique everything looks while also using the same parts to keep things consistent. It’s nice to see a set that has some refinement, but is still recognizable as a LEGO product. There are unique cases where excessive complexity, tiling, and unique parts usages work - such as the Van Gogh set. But those cases are the exception. My opinion is that “less is more.” Stretching out what is possible with just a few types of parts is creative and innovative in its own right. That’s what made classic space so memorable to begin with.
Blacktron fans: Man I loved that gift with purchase set. I'd love to see more! Lego: You got it! Enjoy! Bionicle fans: Man I'd love to see more sets honoring the old line! Lego: "..........."
Bionicle has been very lucky all things considered. G2, while short, would be a pipe dream for most people, the fact it actually happened is crazy. Not to mention various small references across many different sets as well as the GWP Tahu and Takua. They gave Bionicle another shot and it didn't work (for various reasons), honestly there's other themes I'd rather see get recognition than Bionicle. As long as Lego continues to acknowledge what Bionicle did for them and by extention the fans, small references are fine by me.
The new Renegade captures perfectly what was awesome at the time to be involved with anything LEGO back in the 70's and especially mid to late 80's. (I know because I had tons of those sets). This set is a Solid re-do and awesome recreation of the classic Blacktron set. Tiago, even though you're not a "classic space" or "space themed affecianado", your review and video was fair and balanced. The biggest miss that Lego ICON's could've done was, captured that classic '87 style box art - that would have set the presentation, "Over the Top".
Thank you Lego for listening and bringing more Classic Space back. Definitely a market for it and we like the old style ships with a new twist so don't shy away from them. Hope to see some smaller builds as well like little vehicles and robots as well as rocket stations and maybe even a space monorail! Tiago you will grow to love space as it is truly creative and imaginative with lots of scope for game play.
Thank you for the quick review Tiago, It was great to see even more shots of the new set! As a die hard BT1 fan I'm definitely going to pick up at least two, perhaps even more! I definitely want both the A and B models as part of my Blacktron space base setup but I'm also really liking both the dropship buggy and the boxy repair mech both come with so I can see myself picking up more sets to be able to bulk out my collection of those and also have spare black, yellow, trans red and trans yellow bricks, more minifigures and those great prints to play around with and make more MOC's. I think the entire set works great as a big box of bits too for both Blacktron and LEGO Space collectors, people who just want to mess about with bricks and add some "bad guys" to their space scenes, as it really is so many space themed elements! XD
Although I wasn’t old enough to experience the original sets, I was given a set of minifigs which had a Blacktron 1 figure included. It instantly struck me as the coolest Lego space figure, and I was hooked on finding out where the figure, as sets for it weren’t really sold in stores anymore. Blacktron II had come out at that point. As a kid I built Blacktron I MOCs and dreamed of the day I could afford to buy an old Blacktron I set. As an adult, I’ve finally acquired some, and I’m super excited for this set!
I like the modular features for the set, i always look at the play features on the back of boxes to see how creative the designers have become for kid's playtime.
I grew up with Lego in the 70's so the original classic space is my childhood. Blacktron didn't come out until I was nearly through University, but I still got a few sets and the original Renegade was one of them. I will definitely be picking this one up!
Everything is relative indeed! I didn't know Blacktron was considered Classic space, I thought only the grey and blue and open space helmets lego was truly Classic Space. I remember when the Blacktron, M-Tron etc. came out and they looked super fancy with their visors.
I love this! I didn’t grow up while blacktron was a thing but whenever I went over to my grandma’s house I would get to play with my uncle’s old space and pirates sets. I absolutely loved getting to play with legos that were different from the Star Wars sets I had at home, and the black and yellow color scheme of blacktron was my favorite. I love this model and I especially love how fairly priced it is, I suspect it’ll bring back good memories of my grandma’s house when I build it.
i loved the blacktron base, it was probably the only set i had, and one of my bigger lego sets, the design was amazing, and i loved its scifi look and corridor to the base which could be moved apart, or the dome that could open up.
I don't have any nostalgia for the old space theme since I'm just a wee baby. However, something about their designs just really do it for me. I'm definitely going to consider buying this one
as someone born long after the blacktron theme was around, i'm super excited for this set. i got the cruiser as a GWP awhile back and i loved it, and i'm so excited to expand on my modern blacktron collection with this one
You say this is only nostalgia bait but I don't think that's entirely true. I was born long after this set left shelves, yet always desired it because of just how awesome retro-space was. Paying $100 for a buffed up remake is way easier to stomach than dropping $200-1000 bucks on the dated original. Unlike the Galaxy Explorer I might actually by extra copies too as the alternate model feels more unique and justified. May seem like a wild card but my next hope for this line is actually the Sonic Stinger. I actually *do* own the original of that, and it would probably wind up a GWP, but still it'd be cool.
I didn't grow up with Blacktron either, but I respect this build a ton. It feels classic yet has modern play elements. They nailed this set and for the price it feels so worth it.
Honestly as someone with no nostalgia for the old space sets I really love this model. Despite never owning one of those old sets the aesthetic still feels nostalgic somehow and just looks really clean. On top of that I think the model looks amazing. So I definitely think that the set appeals to people who don’t have nostalgia for black tron too.
I'll buy two, then I'll buy at least two more, on sale, eventually. Every set has a sale if you wait long enough. But yeah, the play features are awesome. My kid will absolutely love this (as will I).
This looks like what i would build with all of my 'extra' Lego parts ..and painted them yellow and black.. i don't hate it, i love space Lego, this one will perhaps grow on me
Blacktron was my favorite series when I was a kid. I had the original renegade in the 80's. I'm very excited for the return and updating of the series. I can totally understand not being into the series for those that didn't grow up with them, but for me this was as close to Lego star wars as I could get in the 80's.
Never played with the original but this set looks awesome! Loving all the play functions. I like that the set is good even without viewing it through the lens of nostalgia
As someone who didn't grow up with blacktron but still likes classic space and particularily enjoys the balcktron color scheme, I think the biggest issue this set is going to have is that assymetrical design. I think it translates better on the original set because of the smaller scale but here I think it's going to be offputting for some people because of the far larger cockpit and the larger middle section. I'm not that familiar with the blacktron catalog so I'm not sure if there was a better choice for a remake but I would guess a more tradiitional spaceship design would sell better .
I bought the Galaxy Explorer, and plan to buy this set as well. I hope the next nostalgia set is the 1989 Space Police Mission Commander, set 6986. That's the biggest set I had as a young child, and I loved the colors together.
Always loved Blacktron as a kid. Everyone had the walker. Still have most of the sets, only missing this set (OG), so it will be a fine addition to my Blacktron collection :)
I still have my original 3 first released Blacktron sets. The were some of my favorite space sets to play with when I was a kid. Love these remakes. I will be picking this one up also. Hope they also redo the Battrax!
The Renegade reminds me of a Millennium Falcon in terms of layout (rounded cargo carrier with a cockpit on one side). I wonder if Star Wars was a major influence in the design. Furthermore, the c-clip supported sections make me wonder if this kit's compatible with the GWP Blacktron - 3:06 - Oh, that answers my question. Oh. Oh dear. ...actually now I'm questioning why the use of those c-clips. After I got into testing with plamodel kits like Bandai's 30MM line, I've come to seriously doubt the use of C-clips since they stress, tense, flex, and break after a while. I've got old c-clip parts that broke in a small jar in the corner of my room, and now I'm left wondering "why didn't they just use technic pins instead? Those are way more structurally stable!"
Great Review. I understand the nostalgia factor is not there for you. I love this set. I could not afford a lot of space sets as a kid. I remember one large Space Police set I had was 6986 Mission Commander. What a set! It had a crank that opened the front cock pit so a small piloted rover could come out. It had detachable cells and a prison cell module that detached from the rear. I would love to see Lego remake the Mission Commander.
I look forward to getting this as soon as possible! I have the recent Galaxy Explorer and Blacktron Cruiser side-by-side. New Renegade would be perfect with them!
I would love to see an updated Space Police!! Ice planet would also be amazing and I would love to compare to all the Ice Planet I have! I just love this! Thank you for another honest review
I think there's a lot of yellow here, there was quite a bit of yellow in the original, it was just there to highlight. I would at least reduce the yellow by at least 30%. I'm not a big fan of very old Lego Space (before 1994), and I didn't pay much attention when 10497 came out, but when I bought it on the secondary market, I was pleasantly surprised by the set's design and appearance, I hope it will be the same with this set.
I was never a blacktron fan, but I will probably add this to my collection. I am however a massive fan of classic space! The original galaxy explorer set is still on of my favorite sets of all time. (simply reminds me of my childhood, so the rerelease of that was amazing to me.)
I would love to see all Space themes return over time and continue their simplistic legacy. I love smiley faces and collect spacemen like its going out of style.
I like modularity, and the ability to drop and pick-up the rover is fantastic But aside from that, as someone who didn't grow up with Blacktron or Classic Space, this set doesn't interest me. Comparatively, 10497 Galaxy Explorer wowed me when it was unveiled in spite of the lack of nostalgia, which shows how truly fantastic that model was.
True, but these days I think the striking appearance with more yellow does improve the looks, sharpening the parts that would otherwise sink into the background.
I actually think this is a better representation of Space from the late 80's to mid 90's based off of a unique color scheme, better than the original Blacktron 1 was. The original Blacktron 1 had sets that I can only assume were designed to look menacing, rather than striking. Unfortunately, the lack of having an additional color to bounce off of, made the sets dull to look at, something that Lego avoided with every additional set moving forward.
The original version of this set was still not cheap, even by the standards of today. $30 in 1987 when the original set came out is around $85 today, and it was smaller overall. I'm not sure I'll go for this set though. Nothing to do with the value, design, or lack of nostalgia in the theme (I wasn't born yet when the Blacktron was around), all those aspects are fine. I do like how it looks and it's a fine price for the size of the set. Which is actually my main issue with it; it's good value for the size of the set, but it's awkward to have around because it takes up a lot of space with its large footprint of 30cm x 47cm.
Although, I'm not that much into Blacktron this remake is PERFECTLY executed IMO. The price is very good, the build looks amazing, the play features are here, the droppable buggy looks so bulky and feels so capable ! (As a kid I got the original cruiser, which was one of my favorite ship, I must admit. But it was mostly for the cool black minifig and the sleek design and modularity of the cruiser)
Great! I'm looking forward for it. Will be modified for sure. They could make the middle sections also detachable. There exists a solution which would make the model enough rigid to play with it for sure. Imagine to rebuild the ship in one long ship or to place the rover modul in front of the second asymetric hull and use it as a second cockpit. We'll see... I'll buy 2 sets for sure... 😊
Great review of an interesting product. I grew up with the Classic Space theme as my favourite, and the original Blacktron I actually found very dull. Lots of large pieces and simple sets. But this new Blacktron sets (the GWP and this one) actually look really good! So no nostalgia for me, but I will be going for it this time round 🙂
I'm not quite old enough to have played with Classic Space or Blacktron as a kid, but I still love these remakes and will probably get this to go with the Galaxy Explorer. I hope they continue and we get Ice Planet or Space Police next as that really would be a nostalgia trip for me.
The Alienator B alt build looks like a reference to the Rock Raiders theme as well. The shape of it and the walking/sliding leg mechanism reminds me of the Granite Grinder
100% agree, wish they would’ve used classic style box art for Renegade. Definitely plan to pick up 2, and if this does hit big box store and sees some discounts, may pick up more.
3:26 In your own interview, the designer said they changed the connection due to weight issues which you demonstrated yourself. Are you dismissing his reasoning? Also, I strongly disagree on the stickers. Would’ve been great to have the option to use those decorations on other parts for MOCs.
Those that had the modular vehicles from the late 70s Battlestar Galactica line would not see a ship with a cockpit on both ends to be odd. Also, the girders on top are pure Space 1999 Eagle deigns.
I am kind of like you where this is not a set I had as a kid so I look at it absent that pull. Sort of like Masters of the Universe figures. I like the modularity of it. That's always a fun aspect. But the updated Galaxy Explorer is more visually appealing to me. Also appreciate you covered how it interacts with the gift with purchase. I like that feature with some of the cars they do like for the custom garage and the car carrier.
Looks like a Breen warship from Star Trek Deep Space 9. I love that mechanism for dropping the little rover, I’m gonna try adapting it to make a pair of sliding doors open and close with the twist of a knob.
Oh, i like the classic black and yellow V1.0 of Blacktron - i am so getting this set. I was even able to get the small Blacktron interceptor last year. I am not easily hyped for a Lego set, but for this one i am. (stil, in my youth, i mostly had the black/white/neon green V2.0 of Blacktron - they were cool as well, but i prefered the older 2 Blacktron sets i got from my older cousin.).
I only ever had one set with "Blacktron" it was some kind of base (had a big transparent yellow 1/4 dome piece, 5 figures, was a 2 base plate set with one having a dune with craters, idk what set number it was, as most of it got lost/broken since then) it's neat though
I’m looking forward to this one since Blacktron was my favorite when I was a kid. I was right at the perfect age for the first wave in 87-88 and I had all but 2 of the original sets.
Ice planet should come next. No one remembers spirus or futuron, but Ice planet? We would probably get that big ship, which I had as a kid, although I enjoyed the ice planet base more. As for the Explorians...they were my actual favorite faction, that large starship was epic! It was so unique, so original Lego needs to do that ship justice by sealing off the cockpit and that center interior room. Didn't bug be horribly as a kid...but spaceships wise, it was the coolest looking ship Lego has ever produced.
The triangular flag on the nose instead of a Wedge piece is unfortunate. I will swap out 20-50% of the yellow, and work in some black castle corner walls. But the rover, no stickers, and two windscreens will probably get me to buy 1 or 2 with my hard earned money. Space police 1 mission commander deserves recognition if more remakes are considered.
0:36 Oh man that and the vehicle with the big wheels where you could launch the fighter off it was totally my jam back in the day. 😄 The pieces connected like they are INSTEAD of Technix connections is a downgrade. 😆
I appreciate you covering the set thoroughly despite your predilections, same with the Galaxy Explorer although the conclusions still confuse me tonally :) I feel like I can make an informed purchase now... I didn't actually have this set growing up, though we did have others in the line. I'm curious how the printing on the minifigs will hold up since the old ones wore down pretty easily. Will you make an attempt to make the B design or is that it for this coverage? I do sort of miss the shelter thing in the middle of the old one, or whatever that was, since it sort of felt similar to what the Invader/Cruiser had and felt like it linked things up thematically between sets.
@@TiagoCatarino Really appreciated that interview... Just seeing the human beings behind Lego instead of it all being some sort of strange, hidden thing has really opened my eyes. Love all the insight you and other designers have shared over the years
I'm a little disappointed you can't build a mini Invader from the modules like you can with the original, it felt right. I guess the community will be building new cargo modules to be used and those will work so yay to building.
Personally, I think Blacktron II has a better aesthetic. I think when you get past the classic iconic sets like the Blackseas Barracuda, Galaxy Explorer/Classic Space, or Castle, the nostalgia for these sets drops off precipitously.
The first Blacktron at least has the nice Batman color scheme with the... Fisher Sports logo 😄 For the second one, they just "stole" the "neon technology" from M:Tron. Nothing really special 🙃

The Renegade reminds me of a Millennium Falcon in terms of layout (rounded cargo carrier with a cockpit on one side). I wonder if Star Wars was a major influence in the design.
Furthermore, the c-clip supported sections make me wonder if this kit's compatible with the GWP Blacktron -
3:06 - Oh, that answers my question. Oh. Oh dear.
...actually now I'm questioning why the use of those c-clips.
Yeah, I'll be grabbing at least one of these. Had the Blacktron range as a kid and I adored it.
Can't wait to get this.
Could you make a (REVIIEW) on 05:00 the secondary "B" build (Alienator) ???
I was never a blacktron fan, but I will probably add this to my collection. I am however a massive fan of classic space! The original galaxy explorer set is still on of my favorite sets of all time. (simply reminds me of my childhood, so the rerelease of that was amazing to me.)
I would love to see all Space themes return over time and continue their simplistic legacy. I love smiley faces and collect spacemen like its going out of style.
This is awesome and getting two sets for the B-mode. Please do m-tron magnetiser remake!!!
The 90's vibe is strong with this one, personally I'd love an updated and larger M Tron Mega Core Magnetizer.
I like modularity, and the ability to drop and pick-up the rover is fantastic
But aside from that, as someone who didn't grow up with Blacktron or Classic Space, this set doesn't interest me.
Comparatively, 10497 Galaxy Explorer wowed me when it was unveiled in spite of the lack of nostalgia, which shows how truly fantastic that model was.
My favorite review channel!!
Blacktron didn't used to have that much yellow. In the originals, the yellow was a few highlights and details here and there.
True, but these days I think the striking appearance with more yellow does improve the looks, sharpening the parts that would otherwise sink into the background.
Agreed, less is more. There's far too much yellow under the cockpit.
if the yellow around the cockpit is changed to black I think it would improve the look greatly.
@doddsino this.
And the retractable landing gears also !!!!!
These were the first Lego sets I had as a kid, great nostalgia
Those that had the modular vehicles from the late 70s Battlestar Galactica line would not see a ship with a cockpit on both ends to be odd. Also, the girders on top are pure Space 1999 Eagle deigns.
Love a lego remake I've got last yr GWP this looks amazing great detail looks fun set great review 👍
'you know whats still massive'🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🗣🗣
Oh no, I need more money!!!!!!
Cool starship though. Jet Black starships are always in vogue.
Why didn't they have twin cockpits? It' looks like a electric hand tool ..theres some cool parts to make something else
I only ever had one set with "Blacktron" it was some kind of base (had a big transparent yellow 1/4 dome piece, 5 figures, was a 2 base plate set with one having a dune with craters, idk what set number it was, as most of it got lost/broken since then) it's neat though
6987 Message Intercept Base.
@@WarpigA23 yes that was it, the biggest set we ever got
I’m looking forward to this one since Blacktron was my favorite when I was a kid. I was right at the perfect age for the first wave in 87-88 and I had all but 2 of the original sets.
I just love this set! It will pair well with my Galaxy Explorer ❤
I'll 100% be picking this up but hoping they do the Ice Planet Deep Freeze Defender at some point.
0:36 Oh man that and the vehicle with the big wheels where you could launch the fighter off it was totally my jam back in the day. 😄
The pieces connected like they are INSTEAD of Technix connections is a downgrade. 😆
This is my childhood. Day 1 purchase. Now it is time for M:Tron and Ice Planet...
I am a Blacktron Nostalgia fan (Technically Blacktron II) I prefered the Allied Avenger or Aerial Intruder sets. I will still be getting this new set.
I would love to see you review of the new Diagon Alley set. I’m on the fence about if I like it or not at that scale.
Tiago, are there more people into Blackthorn or Trains?
Wow, this is a straight up must-have for me
I'd love to see a good modern remake (or maybe re-interpretation) of the almighty 6980 Space Commander ! 🤩🤩🤩
I need M-Tron...I need it now!!! And Ice Planet. Please, please, please!!
I like it. I also love the box looks super cool!
Yeah, this is it. You can kinda see the B-model better on the interview though if you're curious!
@@TiagoCatarino Really appreciated that interview... Just seeing the human beings behind Lego instead of it all being some sort of strange, hidden thing has really opened my eyes. Love all the insight you and other designers have shared over the years
Hope we gat an update to the multicore magnitizer. My all time favorite lego set.
I'm a little disappointed you can't build a mini Invader from the modules like you can with the original, it felt right. I guess the community will be building new cargo modules to be used and those will work so yay to building.
Emerald Night remake? Tower of Orthanc? Helms Deep?
MUST HAVE
Blacktron Forever
This set makes me so happy
Personally, I think Blacktron II has a better aesthetic. I think when you get past the classic iconic sets like the Blackseas Barracuda, Galaxy Explorer/Classic Space, or Castle, the nostalgia for these sets drops off precipitously.
100% agree, but I think that’s because I was too young for Blacktron and Blacktron II came out right when I was getting into Lego.
The first Blacktron at least has the nice Batman color scheme with the... Fisher Sports logo 😄 For the second one, they just "stole" the "neon technology" from M:Tron. Nothing really special 🙃
