This set isn't getting enough love... Galaxy Explorer was universally praised but I'm surprised at how polarizing this set is. I think it's wonderful and appreciate your enthusiasm for it... it's palpable!
Correction: This does NOT connect with the GWP Blacktron Ship. If you have the tiniest bit of building prowess it is possible to modify either set for inter swapping.
@@francoisregis2155 ya the long one but one on each side thats abotu it with 2 kits then you get all thez extra peices and have that one main modified blacktron
The modularity of this looks well-thought out, especially if you get two copies or start coming up with new modules of your own. I also like the dropping system of the little rover. It invokes the Spyrius Saucer Centurion, which was my own childhood big spaceship set.
I may be overinterpreting here, but IMHO the design of the ship, especially the frame ("truss" in ISS terminology) goes way beyond the aesthetics and routine of 1980s LEGO space. The use of scaffolding, the octagonal profile of the more bulky areas together with the alternation of thick and clean structures where stability is crucial and more deilcate and greebled parts where technology is located, reminds me very much of industrial, even military design. It´s something that MOCers love to do with spaceships that are designed for purpose not for elegant looks. The fact that Jae Won Lee was able to bring that aesthetic in without departing too much from the original design is amazing.
Man, your spirit is really contagious. Normally you need 2 sets to make alternative docking modules. The satellite part next to the shuttle cabin becomes a powerful fusion laser or a small extra intermediate piece to clamp the two mini gliders to the side between the satellite configuration as an alignment aid. Instead of a vehicle, you can use a long-distance transmitter or a cargo box on the same scale. everything just depends on the dimensions. I would convert the outer wing elements of the frame construction to Vtol style using a grid joint etc.
i think the configuration with all the components mounted "backwards" looks really nice. i will probably use that or maybe mount both engines on the same side to make like one continous jet engine cylinder. definitely getting one of these next year
Very interesting review thanks for the video Im already sold to have it since 1987 I like that line of Blacktron Just got this afternoon the new blacktron cruiser
Appreciate the coverage! Apt comparison to the prior Classic set, feels on par in a lot of ways, though it feels a bit closer to its source material than the heavily built GE does. Love that both have alt builds, and that this one preserves the modules when doing so! Kind of miss the cargo module but it's already got a lot of features so I'll live :)
Saw Tiago’s review before yours, he mentioned the cockpit windshield had scratches because it was just thrown in bag with other pieces, was your windshield scratched? Also as Tiago mentions, wish the box art was like classic box art compared to the boring 18+ box art. Loved the intro with the set flying around. I’m really excited for this set and definitely want 2 copies to build the Alienator model. Looking forward to your future Renegade videos!
I'm torn if I want this as a day one buy, or wait until 2x points day D: Also, since it's the same blacktron torsos from the GWP, that means those pieces will come out of pick a brick retirement, and we can army build once more!!! LETS.GOOOOOOOOOOOO
Would be cool to see you get 10 of these and rebuild some of them. Feels like a missed opporunity though from Lego not to include a proper Blacktron minifig with the CMF space theme.
@@josephrowlee no it does not count in the same way. Is there anything in the Blacktron lore that they became mutants? Then you need to swap out the arm and the leg, plus head and get a helmet.
@samkerr6029 I understand your point. And a full normal Blacktron figure updated would be cool! Unless there were special prints on the legs and arms, I don't think it would be too hard to swap out the few pieces to do that. On the subject of lore: I have heard that the lore of the minifigure is that Blacktron teamed up with the aliens from Alien Conquest and the mutations were thus on purpose. And I believe it was confirmed by the designers. So if you mean lore in general, yes. But if you mean only lore from the '80s and '90s, then I don't think so. I also personally believe with the Lego Space themes especially that Lego encourages us to come up with our own lore for the sets and minifigures, right?
@@josephrowlee Yes you can have the B stand for Buddies and have them hand out cookies and rescue kittens. I however prefer them sticking to their original style with some modifications to enhance their origin just as the two mentioned figures of Iceplanet and M-Tron.
@samkerr6029 Sooo . . . did you read the first part of my reply? Where I said it shouldn't be too difficult to make him a normal updated Blacktron minifigure, unless the arm and leg have special prints. I'm just saying that's the lore to explain the minifigure, and you seem to be saying you only my accept the earlier lore and do not accept new lore. Is that right?
From what I can see, it's incompatible only as long as you build both models "from instruction". You can easily modify the GWP with some clips and "bar blocks". The only problematic part of the system is the GWP container module, which should be extended by 1 block at the rear to accomodate the new configuration.
@@ankanxd5337 yeah but Lego develops sets like two years before they get into shelves. For Blacktron to be in stores in 1987, means they started designing stuff in 1985, even '84.
It’s so frustrating how inconsistent the reporting is on whether or not it’s compatible with the 2023 GWP cruiser. Literally half the reviews are saying it is. The other half aren’t.

Why exactly is 6987 Message Intercept Base so infamous?
Indeed Im curious was it rare to get? I know since I own one they had an error in the instructions and lego added a printed sheet
But why?
Because it’s so cool
13:12 id like to see a mod with 2 front cockpits on each side
That would be cool maybe add the cruiser cockpit?

Now I want this more. I'm a fan of pins over clips but the modular system is an impressive achievement. Great review!
As far as I know the pins would be too flimsy.

Was about to comment on that. First game was released 1986 in Japan, and Blacktron came 1987.
