    The Golf 8 looks are growing on me now I've seen one on the street. Shame about the cheapened details, steering wheel buttons and infotainment experience. HUD & 3-zone good. I've always liked the GTE: but could do with a little more EV range still. Great driving Thomas. Many thanks for your professional work as usual.

    It suffers from the same issues all the mk 8 golfs have in the interior, but those seats look fantastic and the driving experience seems to be very good. Hopefully VW will listen to people like you and change a few things in a face-lift.

    The Golf 6 was the best Golf for me. I remember a friend having a Golf 6 GTI and I was always impressed by the bank vault like solidity. It had soft touch even on the lower door by the door pockets and even at the back all lined in carpet.

    Why does the last generation ICE Golf have to feel so much of a cost-reducing downgrade - especially the interior at the drivers seat? VW should just have extended the lifespan of the Golf 7,5 and spend money on the ID.3 interior instead...

      What? So Golf buyers should pay for the interior of another model? That’s not how things work. Every model has its own business case. Golf 8 has a much more advanced technology than Golf 7. Minor downgrades in the interior are therefore understandable. Golf 4 had the best interior with a lot of metal and soft plastic but it’s not possible these days anymore since infotainment, driver assistance systems and emission regulations cost much more money and must be compensated somehow.

      @@mahmut123456 I felt the Golf 6 had the best interior. Was a good mix of technology and quality. I remember my friend had a golf 6 GTI. I was always surprised by the bank vault like solidity.       It's not just the Golf. My wife picks up a new Polo Match this Tuesday. It's the same. Cruise control was standard on her current Match Polo, as was a full size spare wheel.
      Considering VW is now using more recycled materials, in carbon neutral factories and the prices are always going up... customers are now paying for dieselgate.

      mahmut123456 Maybe Golf 8 has better technology. It is just much harder to use than the Golf 7,5. They should have perfected the Golf 7,5 infotainment rather than starting from scratch.
      Also one of the greatest characteristics of the Golf has always been its solid knobs that were nice to touch and look at. I really think VW could have skipped this generation Golf and used their resources on making their electric cars more luxurious and easy to use...

    Always a pleasure to watch your car reviews. In terms of driving, this new GTE seems to be better and faster than the previous one (which I have owned for four years). Longer electric range as expected. But as you have mentioned: The infotainment system is both laggy and complicated. I would also like to se buttons for vital functions like climate control and radio plus a more intuitive interface for the cruise control.

      Curious: how often do you charge your current one? As a pure EV owner (Zoe) with 220 miles available to me, under 30 seems just too low. Be interested in your experience.

      In these temperatures, around 5 degrees Celcius, I can do around 20-25 miles with my Golf 8 GTE, in heavy traffic. Btw, after a lot of updates, the infotainment system is not laggy and doesn't really bother me. The buttons on the steering wheel however, are quite terrible.

    As a technophobe, I am heartbroken to see the direction VW chose for the new golf...last gen was easier to live with, it was an ergonomic success, this one not so much in my opinion...Upvoting the video though because this channel is doing a great job !

      I drove the 2018 Golf GTE for 2 years and really loved the aluminium -/+ 10 km/t buttons, soft aluminium trim on the lower part of the steering wheel and the recuperating toggle switch on the gear stick... along with volume knob and climate controls

    I've been driving for over 30 years and keen on everything automotive. However I don't think I've ever been so bored of cars. The roads are full of turgid rubbish. Marketing aimed at people who just seem to love led lights and touch screens leaving the driving experience in the rear view mirror. Cars these days are updated frequently as mobile phones catering to the leasing and PCP generation. I watched the first 2 mins of this I thought this comment was more exciting . The presenter Thomas is very knowledgeable and interesting to listen to , I've watched other posts. Hope to see a more interesting car soon. But I doubt I will.

      emission/boring boxes should sell a lot so that cars like alpine can survive in this era. the downside is the fun amount for the money an average person willing to pay is really low because of this situation, if we consider only brand new cars.

      @@user-yn5sk5ru5g I bought a the new Rav4 2019 in black with the 4x4 recently. Which works well as a tow car.... Terrible infotainment though but its quick for 42 mpg looks good with the bonnet spoiler.. Option fyi
      And before I bought the 2016 vw passat all road estate fully loaded.. Even had Google maps on the dash...arguably the best tech specced car I have had.. And it looked great in black.

    It’s true that the inductive slides used for volume and climatronic are not the best but, as a Golf Mk VII driver, I have never used the knob to increase or decrease the volume, the two buttons on the wheel are much easier. For climatronic it’s also possible to use voice commands...

    Hi Thomas I have a question regarding the steering wheel controls. Does it require a physical press of the button to select the button or does it only require a tap? If it only requires a tap, is there a setting to require a press?

    If hydraulic struts are missing because of pedestrian safety, then that should apply to all their models. Lets see if this is the case, i doubt it.

      I remember there was a manufacturer that actually raised the hood when it detected a collision with a pedestrian to have more "cushion"

    Will be interesting to see how the Skoda Octavia RS electric compares. Personally, I like the styling of the new Octavia, it has some identity.

      @Viktor Sligo It works but is less intuitive and arguably, less safe. Don't be fooled, this is 100% a cost-saving measure as it's much cheaper for VW to program once and offload functionality to the infotainment screen than manufacture millions of physical buttons and knobs.

    Stupid question, but does anybody know if it is possible to change the blue theme of the infotainments/instruments screen? I heard on carwow review that it's limited to red on the GTI. The standard Golf supports all colours by the way.

    After driving the hybrid, how much can you go pedal to the metal until the battery runs out ? I’m talking real world driving on the autobahn which means the necessary slow downs and accelerations

    I don't like those steering wheel switches. But my biggest concern is simply the vehicle's complexity - having an ICE and an electric motor and of course the need to meld them together.

    The more I see of the Mk 8 Golf, the happier I am having traded my Mk 7 Golf hatch for a Mk 7.5 Alltrack.
    This car looks like a project designed to make the Golf look like a cross between a Chevy and a Hyundai (not a compliment) while cheapening everything you can see or touch.

    Wird mein erstes Auto :) Bin echt froh dass ich als "Anfänger" ein sehr gutes Leasingangebot bekommen habe. Kaufen wird den keiner, aber durch die BAFA Prämie entstehen eben diese guten Leasingkonditionen !
    Für mich der erste VW der nicht nach Langeweile aussieht :)

    Calling all vw mk 8 Ehybrid and gte owners- with a full pack what is your real world mileage in hybrid mode on long runs high speed say 130km or 75miles at the same 70mph 120kph speed as I’m looking to replace my mk 4 2.0 diesel to lower fuel costs but I don’t know if this gas and battery combo would be better than the diesel typically 6 - 7 litres per 100 km

    Thomas do you think people are going to acclimate to the capacitive controls over time, or is VW going to have to go back to the drawing board in a couple years to fix things? This is honestly the main thing I'm concerned about going from my MkVII GTI to an MkVIII.

      Why changing a well done version of Golf with an unpractical one? Capacitive controls work perfectly when you are waiting for something or somebody, because you don't need to pay attention to the traffic/road so you can navigate through the menu. A car is not a train or an airplane therefore some controls need to be very easy to use while driving. Even a Mk7 GTI looks better than this Mk8, Mk7.5 looks a little bit better.

    Thomas, you helped me decide before between 3 series and X3 (thank you, 330i is an amazing car), now I'm coming back to Europe and looking for some additional advice - Golf GTE or Superb/Passat Phev - which one has more settled ride (all with dcc option) and better sound insulation for motorway driving - sounds like a weird comparison initially as different class, but I do wonder if Golf being new product brought some massive improvements in that space :)

      @@MrWitchTubefor the long journeys you go for passat , the golf 8 gte it is a beat noisy i got the same golf as Thomas demonstrated, im very happy with it but on long journeys it is not as quiet as different cars per example i had a jaguar was very well noise cancellation

    Hi, excellent video. We have the mk 7 gte and with only 8.8 kwh it manages 40 km (35 in teh winter and 45 in the summer). Having 50% more energy stored you would hope that the golf VIII would do better than 45 km. Is there some more explanation for this?

    It drives as much as possible in full electric mode. If you floor the gas, for example to overtake, the cold combustion engine will engage and go full power. This seems bad for the engine, or is there an additional system in hybrids that addresses this situation?

      Yes this is bad. Therefore dont floor when its cold... in general, PHEVs however are built a little bit more solid in areas where that might damage the engine. Also the electric boost helps to reduce RPM while accelerating. However, it is still bad to floor it when its cold.

    I'd totally trade my 7.5 Golf R for this. The R burns through gas like no other, gas is way too expensive in California, and I don't have a charging station at my apartment building for a full electric car. So the part electric, part gas, and still performance benefits of the GTE would be perfect for me. Unfortunately, VW isn't bring the GTE to North America.

    Well - a good review but quite honestly when VW were having design problems and software problems and delivery questions, I looked at alternatives and having listened to your review I am very glad I have not waited for the GTi which is what I was looking seriously at. I looked at the BMW 135i and the Mercedes A class A250 (not the Audi A3 - we've had one for 6 years) and ended up buying an AMG A35 - in my view way superior to its opposition (Golf R and 135i) by some distance. Very very happy with it in all respects - I'm 6'3" and enjoy driving it so much it overshadows my BMW M340i touring in some aspects - ergonomically especially (but not the motor!!). It is very iontuitive and my partner (her car) assimilated it very quickly - proof.

      Greg Simpson Agree. I got myself a A200. And Im glad I didnt wait for the new A3 or Golf. The A-class is such a great car in many ways. I Will upgrade to the hybrid 250e in a year or two.

      @@JanM2 - hey ours sounds awesome in sport mode - pops bangs and much deeper sound than the GTi. The 180 and 200 mercs have a renault motor - they certainly sound ;like a vacuum cleaner. :)

    3€ (10x0,3€ for electric energy) + 2,34€ (1,8 x 1,3 €) = 5,34 €/100km
    With my Polo 1,6 TDI I do 5l/100km = 5,5€/100km (5*1,1 €).
    Finally a car that I can move for less money than my existing car. I will finally upgrade my car as I move a lot up and down mountains living in Stuttgart city centre and I want to have 2020 tech in my car.

      @@inchskater nah man only short distances from work and back home or the place we get picked up for work. Not more than 10km 1 way and the return 10km so 20km would be pretty good. Also buying food which also i can do it in the town. So by this I could use the electric mode more than the petrol engine

    I think VW will loose 20-30% of Golf sales from all these touch button/knobs and the glossy plastic surfaces! Its a pity cause other than that seems a slightly better car than its predecessor.

    Hi, I really hope you would be able to answer my query and clear my doubt. Since, yours is the most elaborated review about Golf Mk8 GTE plug-in hybrid car I could find anywhere on internet. I have just bought a used one couple of days ago. It still has factory warranty till April' 24. Has been driven for only 3700 miles. One year old car. Its almost fully loaded with features offered. I bought it because I just loved it when I took it for a test drive and did not want to wait for delivery time for the new car. Already got burnt waiting for Toyota yaris for almost 8 months to hear it would be further delayed. So canceled the order. Coming to my question, when I picked my Golf GTE from the dealer. The battery was not charged. Dealer was ready to charge it but then I had to leave the car overnight there and come again next day. Thought it would be a good experience and start for me to understand how to charge the battery as it is my first battery oriented car, I drove it to home on petrol engine. I then found a charging station nearby my home and charged the battery there. It took 3 hours to charge it full. But after the charge it showed only 28 miles of range. I know it is a used car but its only one year old and has been driven for 3700 miles only. I am little sad about it. I expected it to give at-least 30 to 35 miles of range if not full 40 miles as claimed by VW. Also, I did not see battery recuperating in hybrid mode. Should I take to VW authorized service center or is there anything in the settings that I can do something about. I did find that there is a setting of minimum charge which was set to 30%. I thought maybe it is because of this the mileage range is showing less. So I changed it to 20% but it did not make any difference. May you please suggest what should or can I do in this case? or is it just real world scenario of Golf GTE I have to live with...

      That minimum charge is a setting if u want to keep ur battery charged while driving by the engine - not efficient

      I’ve heard from reliable sources that we will be only getting the GTI and R. However, I wish we got the GTE. I love my mk7.5 golf r, but if there’s one thing I dislike about it, it would be the fuel economy. Of course, you sacrifice fuel economy for any high performance car, but the GTE would be just perfect for me.

      Double H H I think for the GTE, it ultimately comes down to sales. VW tried originally with the Jetta Hybrid and later tried again with the e-Golf, but they both sold terribly. I don’t think we’ll see another electrified VW anytime soon in the states.
