    Full Moon Fever was my life’s soundtrack for 9th grade. Damn the Torpedoes was soundtrack for my early 40s. Wild Flowers has been one of a very few albums comprising my 2020 soundtrack, getting me through this pandemic. I’m grateful for him, for the talent God gave him and for how Tom used it.

      I used to listen to wildflowers around the time TP died. On the 405 prolly 10 miles away from him Rick, Mike, Ben. I remember thinking while on my way to work (I work in the film industry) something has to give. And boom turn on KLOS and they announced he was in the hospital, an hour later he was gone. Now with pandemic I feel like I sensed it coming. We were all working way to hard, it was great but we needed this break to re-evaluate the culture we have. It’s very odd. Anyway Wake Up Time was and still is my alarm. I wish TP could wake up and give us the love we crave. 🖤🖤🖤

    One thing I find fascinating about Tom Petty is not only how many great songs he has, but how few "bad" ones---he has almost no "clunkers" in his catalog. Some songs are better than others of course, but even greats like the Beatles, Dylan, Prince, etc. have some really abysmal songs. TP's quality control is incredible, and I'm really looking forward to hearing the lost Wildflowers second record when it comes out in the fall. Great interview.

    • @howtodocertainthings8452
      @howtodocertainthings8452 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      rockturtleneck definitely agree. I would arguably say he had two ‘bad’ albums, Mojo and Let Me Up in his entire career. How many of the greats can say that? Springsteen, Dylan, Young have always seemed to be held in higher esteem than Petty but how many clunkers did they release?? Quite a few.

    Tom was just a legend. He was a fan living the Dream. That’s why his music relates so much. I may be speaking for myself but as a musician I feel that. You start to write for what people want and in the end people want what you’re craving usually. A lost art that even I’m guilty of. One day we’ll get back to room takes, until then let Tom Pettys sessions live on. Not to mention the heartbreakers jeeze. I want them as my backing band.

    I don’t know if I would classify Petty’s sound as “California.” He was from Gainesville, Florida. He took little pieces of a lot of genres. But in the end, his sound is just plain ol’ rock n roll done insanely well.

      As a former Californio for the first 40 years of my life, and having loved TP since my teens, I will say, Tom brought his style and sound to us out west, and we adapted it as sort of a California sound. It colored my own teen and early adult years, and therefore, I would say you could classify it-- if you must-- within the "California Sound".
      I don't tend to classify stuff in my life anymore, because it's a waste of time and so subjective....but for me, this was my youth and still speaks to me now. ❤️✌🏻🎶

    Jeff Lynne wasn't totally a happy accident, or "mistake" like Rubin puts it -- Petty was already impressed with Lynne's work on Cloud Nine when George H played it for him, and that's why when Petty ran into Lynne later in LA, he was psyched to get the ball rolling w Lynne

    The song “Wildflowers “ was done in a one take stream of consciousness...he he started strumming and singing, and Benmont was sitting there at the piano and started to play along...Tom said he spent no more than 4-5minutes total on that song....brilliant

    • @thesadwolf
      @thesadwolf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is another myth of song writing up there with Paul McCartney writing Yesterday in a dream. Yes, you can have the initial inspiration for a song, but there's always going to be an editing and revision process. Saying it took 4-5 minutes to write a 3 minute song just isn't what took place. It's like Jesus could swim the 100 meter quickly and that was interpreted as walking on water. It creates a mythos.

Those were such good times first one was in Phoenix at sky harbour arena and remember they played Girl on LSD. Fantastic show then saw two more in southern California at Pacific ampitheater and somewhere else I don't remember. I'm sure the box will great but they could probably do a box for every record that would stand up

    The story about how Tom came to work with Jeff Lynne as Tom tells it was that he saw Jeff at a traffic light when they were in their cars, as Rick Rubin says here. But the background is that Tom had really liked Cloud Nine, a recent George Harrison album produced by Jeff, and already wanted to work with him when they happened to see each other. That ended up leading to the Traveling Wilburys and the 2 albums Jeff Lynne produced for Tom, Full Moon Fever and Into the Great Wide Open.

    There's an interesting tidbit about the song Wildflowers from the Petty biography written by Warren Zanes . . . It was often wondered who the subject was: who is it that "belongs among the wildflowers." Petty confessed that we didn't think he knew, but whole working with a therapist, he came to see that it was about himself . . . that _he_ belonged among the wildflowers.
