  • To celebrate the release of Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers & All The Rest” box set, Rick Rubin connected with Heartbreakers keyboardist, Benmont Tench for a conversation. Benmont started playing with Tom back in Florida with a band called Mudcrutch. He stayed with Tom as they became the Heartbreakers, moved to LA, created some of the most memorable music of all time and was ultimately with him all the way until the last Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performance at the Hollywood Bowl in 2017. Benmont is a massive talent who’s also done plenty of work as a sideman for Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, U2, Johnny Cash and a ton of others. Rick and Benmont talk about all of this and share memories of their time in the studio together.

I'm glad he acknowledged the decades of listening and practicing that have gone in to his ability to create 'magic'. This is a wonderful interview. 'It's all a prayer' - wow. Thank you, Rick, and thank you, Ben.

When speaking with a friend when Tom passed, he said "thats the last Great Rock 'N Roll band gone. I saw TP & Heartbreakers in Buffalo "86 (with Dead & Dylan), plus many Toronto appearances. Lifelong TP & HB fan. My first ever rock concert was spring 1986 at the Budokan: Dylan & Pettty. Somewhere I have a cassette bootleg recorded on a WALKMAN stuffed in my jacket pocket w/a clip-on mic on the collar. Me, 17 years old, was so paranoid of getting caught that my shaking hands couldn't properly flip the tape after the first side ran out; side 2 got all fouled up haha!!!
    TP & HB Concert #2 (1999[?], Lucinda Williams opened) was at Darien Lake in western NY, but the Buffalo Sabres made the Stanley Cup finals and the show got re-scheduled. Oh well, a "free" night at the park instead with a new ticket issued for the re-scheduled show, too :-) No complaints.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were so loving, caring and full of appreciation towards their fans! Their friendship is awesome, even though others exited from the band, but still they come back. It shows that Tom is an excellent leader of the band. He does not forget his former band Mudcrutch and his friends from this band. I am sure Benmont Tench gets tired of getting compared to Mozart or living down his historical position in the band as a serious underminer of Tom's difficult position. Also I think Tom caught up over time regarding wide ranging knowledge of music in general. Brilliant interview; I live in my head and also a recovering alcoholic in Tom speak a wild indian. Glad we both grew up. Certainly not a put down of one of the most articulate and brilliant musicians in this genre in our day. I know it's released because of the Wildflowers hoopla; I would have liked to have heard a conversation with BT and Mike Campbell in this regard.

    Do you know 'walk on gilded splinters by doctor john'? No. Wow, how can someone so unqualified interview this man?

    Benmont,
    Talks about the Dr. John song “Walk on gilded splinters” that’s from the Debut album Gris-Gris by Dr. John, I believe 1968. It’s really good and swampy and trippy music. Check it out if you have not heard it.🎶

    Not really about "life with Tom Petty" (as the title indicates), but still a very good interview with a keyboardist whose impactful work has shaped much of the music we love.

    Great interview with a great musician. And, i like Rick Rubin, but could he really NOT know Dr. John’s Walk on Gilded Splinters? (He had to simply be having a brain freeze!... shoes and socks might have proven helpful. 😂)

    Don Felder said the same thing about Don Henley pushing his guitar solos until they were polished perfect when an earlier take was more raw and exciting and "better" but he'd have to do it again anyway...

      Not my favorite member of the band despite his genius. Gave Tom a really hard time and he knows it. Not a put down.

      Short version mudcrutch was a complete failure, the band broke up & scattered to the winds. Benmont but together a band called the drunks & they went into a studio to record something. Ben asked mike for a hand & mike invited Tom. Tom walks in & goes this is my band & it was the drunks became the heartbreakers & the rest is history.

    • @tomandaj1
      @tomandaj1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. Ben had put a band together with, Tom Stan and Ron Blair. Petty came in to help out and they became they Heartbrakers. If Ben hadn’t done that there’d be no Heartbreakers ... What’s your point ?
