I would like to thank “the universe” for bringing together two of my very favorite artists/interviewers/people on one podcast. I could listen for days. Please do this again.
Id like to thank the roboto algorithm that brought it to me as well. I was just laughing with a friend at a shop about the confirmation bias of lil uni.
You're in luck - the two of them have done many episodes of this podcast, Broken Record. My favorite that I've heard so far is their Brian Eno interview - my two favorite music producers in one conversation.
half way through the book myself, and i can see that this is more than a quick read. There are so many layers and complexities and nuances and practical elements that can open people up to possibilities. I already feel that i need to start again and take notes and practice these beautiful ideas to boost my creative output. So happy to have this little gem. Not to mention the beautiful experience of the AUDIOBOOK version with Rick reading. So awesome. A great gift for those of us struggling with our own creativity. Love it Rick. Thank you!
Rick Rubin is the man. His book should be taught in schools as part of a national curriculum in public schools. The tools, ideas, wisdom, experience, knowledge, and real life applications of principles.
Nah, they wanna teach woke which is the antithesis of every thing Rick Rubin advocates. You gotta persuade a local school board but most are Lenin oriented and love managing the race to mediocrity.
a side note: a month ago I bought 2 x pairs of blue light blocking glasses. when listening and watching Rick on these pods, I noticed him wearing them too. Deeper down the rabbit hole, RR mentioned why ~ same reasons as me ~ especially at night. really enjoyed this chat. thank you. 🙏🏼🇦🇺✌🏽😎☀️🏄♂️🏄♀️🏄💦🎵🥁✈️
Enough is Enough! 25:30 through the podcast and it is just amazing. I stop I re listen, I pose I write down, I rewind and look up online names I have never heard of! The best podcast I have ever listened to: 1. the interviewer is great at asking question, OMG, so many people don't know how to ask the wright question to develop the conversation further. 2. the guys is a representation of DZEN, like really a successful and spiritual two in one... you both made my day and world shake today, that you you for being and doing what you have been doing for consecutive duration of time I assume, before I came out of cave into a big world to see the reflection of my inner believe. Respect and Gratitude!
I heard Rick on Rich Roll podcast a month ago and immediately ordered his book at my local library (which I often do when interesting authors are on podcasts!) Well, it took a month to come in and after I picked it up today, this interview with him popped up! (Never listened to Malcolm before this! The algorithm knew...!) So I listened as I cooked dinner and I can already tell a 2 week library loan won’t be long enough!! I will have to buy a copy because am really needing this creative inspiration! Can’t wait to dive in!!🎉🙏
I'm enjoying listening to interviews on the book so much that I've put off reading it myself. So interesting to see what resonates with different interviewers and the tangents they inspire.
A necessity for every creative or anyone who loves a creative. Anyone who raises a creative. Anyone who finds living life a creative endeavor. It will help you appreciate your own life more. Such a beautiful experience.
I’ve got to say….this interview was fantastic and more importantly, safe as I was partaking in a ketamine treatment for nerve damage as a result of MS/surgery. The visuals work fantastically along with the ideas.
Thank you so much for such an interesting conversation!! It feels really good to have people raising the level (Sorry, I'm french, not sure that expression means anything in english?...) I've been binge listening to Rick's interviews for his books (ordered it, can't wait to read i), and I just can't stop. Now I'm going to listen to 'Speaking Peace' by Marshall Rosenberg while embroidering what I hope to become a piece of an exhibition. This book arrives just at a time in my life where I feel a bit more confortable with my creative work and it helps me to think "you have all the rights to do that, keep going, make it happen". So THANK you Rick!
Somewhere online, the algorithm placed this conversation on a full blown MAGA Supporter ‘s feed. They were attracted to the “Broken Record” and decided to listen to it. These two brilliant individuals opened that listener’s ears, who in turn, shared it with their circle of influence, and in turn, just like the 1970’s Breck Shampoo commercial, this wisdom spread….. awakening, transforming and showing there are many ways to be in our world beyond fear and hatred.
The more I listen to Rick the more I understand the idea of archetypes and the evolution of Pokémons. I have an acquaintance who is you only somehow you evolved differently; you found simplicity and clarity in your expression, whilst he is stil entangled. A very nice talk! Thank you!
I came across the podcast first and listened to it twice. It was so great that I had to share it with a friend. Every creative should hear this. Its very affirming and broadens the way we define ourselves as creatives! Amazing. Thank you!
❤❤ oh Rick, Thank YOU so much ! I’ve been loving your recent interviews with artists - and now your own love and passion for your own voice - has reached me in a most helpful way. I’m connecting with everything your saying and have understood for years. ‼️❤️ but now, your fresh voice is approaching a flip side of myself - and helping me to let go of old poisons and embrace the belief I’ve always had in myself. I’m buying your book tomorrow!! I hope there’s an audio version - as I love your voice and peaceful rhythm. I’ve been spreading the word of Rick to my friends. Thank u sooo much. 👏🏻❤️😄‼️‼️
thanks rick for playing the best game called 4Cs: communication, cooperation, coordination leads to collaboration and this process fuels a lifelong circle of creativity!
I'm so fascinated by how the cornerstone ideas of Zen Buddhism(Beginner's Mind was mentioned by Rick Ruben) finds its way into the lives of the most prolific people in the west. I happen to be a westerner myself currently benefiting greatly from it.
‼️❤️❤️ PS !! Thank you again Rick - just started to listen to Marshall Rosenberg - talking about his Non Violent Communication - holy crap!! In the first 5 minutes - he talked about all the negative poisons that seeped into me as a young child. “ punishment” and deserving to suffer. Holy crap, I’ve been so aware of feeling like that since I’ve been in 2nd grade. Thank u so so much !!!!! Thank u to Malcolm !!!! ❤😊
Outstanding interview - I really appreciate the insight (inspiration) on creativity! This really connected with me! Saw the 60 Minutes interview too, excellent - thank you guys for sharing this! 😊👍 Wishing you both continued success and continued creative journeys!
I really didn’t understand the band The National when I first heard it. His low droning voice made no sense to me. But the more I listen I just snapped into it and loved it soooooo much. I can totally related to his point around min 42
Reminds me of "When My Time Comes" from Dawes, "....and the only piece of advice that continues to help, is anyone making anything 'new' only breaks something else...". Super excited to check out this book.
when i have a creative problem i often call one of the free counseling help lines we have available here in los angeles. people may think you only call help lines for problems with relationships or people, but you can call them for intellectual problems, artistic problems, etc. it can really help to talk to someone for 15 minutes, tell them the problem, what you've tried that hasn't worked etc.
Every self respecting human being needs a quality sound board. If you open up a 900 number, then people will call you but you must be a good listener. And they will pay you $3.99 ! a minute to be a good ear 👂 and offer words of encouragement, ment being the operative word for its all about the mindset which for $3.99 ! a minute is a bargain, especially if the person you call to be your sound board really is a good listener so you can flesh out your idea 💡. We each need a great idea to execute on. This is how you build an amazing civilization. And if every body calls your 900 #, then you can fund the casodex. Thanks 😊
Inspiring and insightful interview, so much useful information for anybody who wants to be truly creative as opposed to just craftsmanlike and successful, new ideas are more likely to arrive in a state of mind that is open and seeking than than one that thinks it already knows all the possibilities, this is where serendipity can be made use of, if you're radar's on and tuned to the unexpected.
I gotta say, I wasn't expecting to stumble upon such a trove of, shall we cay, interesting secrets being put out in the open. Guess my radar's tuned in pretty well.
Hey!! Thank you for sharing the interview with automatic captions! Im hard of hearing and they are helpful, thanks! I want to make a suggestion. The background of the video has a line that its moving through the screen and sometimes makes diffiicult read the subtitles because something its moving through the lyrics (the lyrics has also a black background). Sometimes i have a headache for concentrating in watching the lyrics and seeing the black line moving constantly in the through the captions. 🎉 The universe is always giving, but it doesn’t always throw the ball in your mitt. Some of the people that I initially don’t like become my favorite when I am given the time to learn their character.
Wow, this was an excellent conversation! Regarding Rick's comment on the computer being better at Go because it knew LESS than the masters, I am reminded of a band I was in 30 years ago. The singer and main lyric writer had no previous musical experience, unlike me on drums and the bass player and the guitar player. Some of the early songs had lyrics written with odd meters, inconsistent amounts of syllables per line etc., which was hard to write music to in a straight-forward way. So we just kinda wrote around it, and it was a bit hard to play and a bit awkward sounding. "Hmm, this line will need one extra beat!" But after a while it became easy to play, and indeed those early songs had an idiosyncratic "stamp", that perhaps sounded like they were borne out of a deep understanding of more complex music. Nope, even us "experienced" musicians were punk rock hacks I suppose, with no training to speak of!
He conversation about the robot beating the human in the game of Go reminds me of this article I read about Henri Rousseau, that basically accredited the uniqueness and groundbreaking aspects of his art and paintings to his ignorance as he had never receive any formal training for painting. It's so cool how not knowing can allow you to create in such innovative and unique ways because you're not limited by your knowledge
Thanks for asking about the 5 vs 8 mistakes! I was wondering about that too. Also that there are initially seemingly contradictory suggestions although they're actually yin yang balancing points
Like the unexpected, tearful reaction to news of HOW/why a computer is programmed to play the Japanese game "Go!", actually won the challenge by offering a new solution that humans would just not previously imagine. [timestamp 36:00] I'm not certain of this, but consider this counter-intuitive hypothesis (involving the new, daily, online mini-crossword game "Wortle", hosted by NYTimes): How do many ESOL speakers often out-perform lifetime, native English speakers? Maybe there's a parallel dynamic in effect, when people with a smaller but still advanced English vocabulary are less stifled by a higher percentage of obscure, offbeat words (and so a higher PROPORTION of more common English words)?
The alpha go story... I feel like pure logic is a different thing. We developed knives to chop things and it's easier than ripping things apart with our hands. I learned to play chess from my friend John and only played him for most of a year...I won one game shortly before graduation. 'i only play people I know' is aka 'i need more friends'. It's so weird to play with other folks!
Interesting podcast and I’m enjoying the book right now. I felt compelled to comment though - the reason why people react to imitation with hostility is that often the ideas borrowed, whether lovingly and respectfully or not, are not linked to the original artist by the borrower. In a society that gives value and compensation based on WHAT is created, rather than one that simply rewards the creator, crediting the original artist becomes very important, and failing to credit the source of your creativity becomes an unfortunate act of robbery.
I think it all comes from within...a recognition, a knowing, an internal spark where when inspired, the doors fly open......Jeremiah 33:3..I will show you things, things you never knew before etc.....all imo within our inherent God given talents..
It's interesting to hear these folks talk about being inspired by other art, which I agree with. But I must say, when the clash turned people onto reggae and people started to consume that, did they do it with respect to the history of how it came to be? With the larger implications of why it's such a powerful culture? I think yes, imitation is flattery, but when the originators are not respected, called back to, and then the spirit of their art isn't carried forward, just the entertainment value, something needs to be said or acknowledged. I understand there's nothing new under the sun and think sometimes "paying homage" is thrown out of proportion and egotistical, but I can also see people having reasonable points about where respect and love ends and where imitation in order to make profits begin. Again, I don't think anyone should be scared to engage in any art and agree fear is largely unnecessary, but the intention behind creating matters greatly
I DIE INSIDE. THE PAIN IS UNCEASING AND UNBEARABLE. I LIVE IN A STATE OF PERPETUAL TRAUMA AND PANIC. I CAN'T BREATHE. I DON'T BREATHE. I could die from the pain of missing my best friend. Or, actually, not really my best friend, but they guy whom I thought was my best friend... He betrayed and abandoned me, discarded me like garbage!!! (HOW THE FUCK COULD HE?) Replaced me for another. My mind can't fathom, my heart can't comprehend. I live in perpetual panic and constant longing... How could he not miss me? How could he do this to me? Did he just replace me, really, just like that? I'm dying inside. My soul is truly raped and my heart is shattered. REMINDER TO SELF, SWEET SOUL: This was a karmic friendship, meant to be there for a limited time (17-months-ish) to teach you, about yourself! About boundaries, about self-love, about self-respect, about self-worth, etc... About a whole plethora of magical, juicy, alchemical things! The universe, God, your guides, your ancestors, have pushed you, lovingly, in the right direction: into your own magnificent powerful magical freedom! When you let go. The universe will catch you. It’s talking to you. Let go of everything and trust the universe. It’s within you. ✨💫 Jesus said to her: “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out, in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher) - John 20:16💖 NOTE TO MY TWIN FLAME: Dearest twin flame, I’m working on myself, I am being 100% healed, on evert level, in every way. This is my purification process. I am doing this for me, for you, for us. I’m proud of myself, and I’m getting ready for you. I love you.
In general, idk about this. Often people literally are just copying from others and that can destroy someone's creative career or undercut all of their momentum. A lot of this is fire but an almost equal part is bunk or just so debatable, it goes without saying. Conclusion, Rick is a genius but some of his takes aren't based. And Malcolm is just yes manning lol Edit: 52:00 should just refers to the fact that something better could have been done and could be done in similar situations in the future... Sure you were doing your hypothetical situational best but that doesn't negate that something better was theoretically possible.
3:46 AM listening to this as I paint what is my biggest project so far, I'm deeply inspired. Deeply.
😊
How did the painting go?
@@kindsey1 Hi Kenny! It went well, thank you. Very well. Would you like to see what I came up with?

Listened to this while painting in the studio. The one person I’d most love to be friends with in life is Rick Ruben.
If so, you better make sure never to tell him anything he's done could be any better than it already is. You know, 'cause he like to ride cars.
thanks rick for playing the best game called 4Cs: communication, cooperation, coordination leads to collaboration and this process fuels a lifelong circle of creativity!

I think it all comes from within...a recognition, a knowing, an internal spark where when inspired, the doors fly open......Jeremiah 33:3..I will show you things, things you never knew before etc.....all imo within our inherent God given talents..
THANK UUUU
Or, actually, not really my best friend,
but they guy whom I thought was my best friend...
He betrayed and abandoned me,
discarded me like garbage!!!
(HOW THE FUCK COULD HE?)
Replaced me for another.
My mind can't fathom, my heart can't comprehend.
I live in perpetual panic and constant longing...
How could he not miss me?
How could he do this to me?
Did he just replace me, really, just like that?
I'm dying inside. My soul is truly raped
and my heart is shattered.
REMINDER TO SELF, SWEET SOUL:
This was a karmic friendship,
meant to be there for a limited time (17-months-ish)
to teach you, about yourself!
About boundaries, about self-love,
about self-respect, about self-worth, etc...
About a whole plethora of magical, juicy, alchemical things!
The universe, God, your guides, your ancestors, have pushed you, lovingly,
in the right direction: into your own magnificent powerful magical freedom!
When you let go. The universe will catch you. It’s talking to you.
Let go of everything and trust the universe. It’s within you. ✨💫
Jesus said to her: “Mary.”
She turned toward him
and cried out, in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”
(which means Teacher) - John 20:16💖
NOTE TO MY TWIN FLAME:
Dearest twin flame, I’m working on myself,
I am being 100% healed, on evert level, in every way.
This is my purification process. I am doing this for me, for you, for us.
I’m proud of myself, and I’m getting ready for you. I love you.
excellent!
Literally genius here
Thanks. FYI, just two minutes of that graphic becomes tedious to distraction let alone an hour.
I joined audible to hear this book 😅
So did I. Such an amazing book. My perspective on creating is forever changed.
As a wise man once said, "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics." Gladwell uses to full effect.
True.
Great conversation… Anyone who has ever written software has lived what they’re describing. It’s freaky.
So damn good
Cool cat like yodas like these two deserve way way more attention and noterietay.
I'm not too sure that 'more attention' is necessarily what they want though.
"Study the greats, and become greater" - Michael Jackson. Rick's philosophy is similar.
I am looking for "Perfect Enough"
Great
In general, idk about this. Often people literally are just copying from others and that can destroy someone's creative career or undercut all of their momentum.
A lot of this is fire but an almost equal part is bunk or just so debatable, it goes without saying.
Conclusion, Rick is a genius but some of his takes aren't based. And Malcolm is just yes manning lol
Edit: 52:00 should just refers to the fact that something better could have been done and could be done in similar situations in the future... Sure you were doing your hypothetical situational best but that doesn't negate that something better was theoretically possible.
