Hey, thank you so much for all this information and history about the wood apple / bael fruit. Would love to try them out in the Northern India region. I really loved eating them and try to look for them wherever I go - also very healthy!
I imagine it to be like raisins and dried figs and dried tamarind or somehing! I've watched like, 90% of your videos, all in one sitting. Your reactions are the best after eating food!
Im a sri lankan and I miss this pretty badly... Its hard to find this is US as once you pluck the fruit/ or falls from the tree, it goes bad pretty fast.
I LOVE durian too - and I find the smell to be really amazing. Woodapple on the other hand, is great and I do love it too, but it definitely smells like cheese!
Hey, thank you very much! I've thought about doing a little better effects after effects and production, but not too sure how to go about doing it. Thank you for your kind words!
Hi Mark - very good video of one of my favourite berries. (Hard to believe but it is a berry, says Wikipedia). I was born and raised in Sri Lanka and love it in a milkshake. I now live in New Zealand where I can buy tins of the pulp. These gigantic trees grew in the arid areas of Ceylon (as it was called when I lived there) and was a favourite food with wild elephants. 'When the apple is swallowed and reaches the stomach, digestion takes place and the enzymes and acid present in the stomach reach inside the woodapple and being softer than the skin, the pulp inside gets diluted. The diluted pulp inside is sucked out of the woodapple leaving the skin only, intact and which comes out of the body with dung', completely whole - but empty. (in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061129034404AAsJ8Rp)
Oh lord, you have four of them!!!!!!!!! That is my favorite, favorite, favorite fruit I told you. Among food, my favorite is Goat Birani and in fruit ...KODBEL. I am so glad, if ever my country runs out this fruit I will go to Sri Lanka to eat. Like a greedy person- i watched this video 3 times (feeling ashamed). I miss them SO Much.
wood apple can be a snack food too! Receipe: Break wood apple and scoop out the fruit put in a bowel add fresh thai chillis cut into small pieces add salt to taste and some mustard oil then mix all togather, finished. Fresh summer time snack☺
Yes, very very common all over Sri Lanka - maybe it's the national fruit there. Are you from Thailand? I sometimes see wood apple at Khlong Toey Market, but it's all chance, you can never be sure. I just bought some the other week in Nakhon Pathom. Glad to hear you also like it!
@rytis1 I'm actually not in Sri Lanka anymore... but thanks so much for the offer! You should give woodapple juice a try - it's sweetened up so it almost kind of tastes like raisins! Thanks again, and hope you're having a great time!
make it with some green chillies, pinch of salt and sugar, one cube butter or oil, mustard sauce, two or three lemon leaves, some coriander leaves and feel heaven.
Elephants are somehow known to finish(eat) the inside fleshy part of the wood apple without breaking the shell, some wonderful digestive system they have :) This is also called Elephant apple and it is a very divine fruit according to Indian culture.
So I've made it my mission to watch all Marks videos. And can confirm it was a decision well made. Was that Joel we can hear chuckling in the background!?
Thank you for sharing. I think this is a little different though, because normally mah toom is dry and made as a drink, but this is a wood apple, a fruit that's eaten fresh. In Thai it's known as mah kweet.
@RABthefirst Good to hear about durian! With an extremely hard outer shell, the fruit is pretty tough, but I'm not sure about how fast it decays... Maybe fast though, because some Sri Lankan friends of mine in the UK have said that it's impossible to find there...
Hi Mark, this is what you call a wonder fruit! It is believed to be good for your heart too. When I was a kid my mum and granma used to crack open the fruit and put the contents in to a bowl. Then add some water and mixing it with bare hands. Now you have the blender to do the job..😂. Keep adding some coconut milk , brown sugar and salt to taste. The taste of the drink is heavenly good!
I haven't seen it too much in Thailand, but I did find a lot in Aranyapratet. Some friends told me that many people used to eat it a lot in Thailand about 20 years ago.
Bought this fruit recently and had no clue how to eat it. your video really helped and I must say some of your expressions were too good. I'll update on the fruit's taste in a while..
We call BELINGGAI in Malaysia. We mix the flesh with coconut milk, sugar (palm sugar better) and a little salt, and drink it . real good, but difficult now to find where I live (Kuala Lumpur)..
Esperalzi Esperal kat kampung pun dah susah nak jumpa.. nk nangis je rasa.. kalau ada tanah kat kampung saya dah tanam dah 1000 pokok.. boleh di komersil kan ni.. KL mana ada buah pelik pelik camni
Ravi and Mark, in Bengal we mash the fruit with crushed fresh aromatic green chilies [prik khee noo], fresh mustard oil, good cane jaggery, sea salt to taste. This is called kvath-bel chutney and taken as a relish. Try it! The fruit needs to be at the right stage of ripeness.
Hahahah, thank you for sharing that, that is funny and awesome to hear! Yes, wood apple is so delicious is great just straight from the shell with a little sugar!
I had those in Sri Lanka too. The smell was somewhat unpleasant, but the taste was amazing. Im convinced if you didn't enjoy it, then you probably had a sub-par wood apple
Well, I've never heard of that fruit before. Somehow I find that most people find durian as the smelliest fruit ever. It's kind of weird because I'm a Malaysian and I truly enjoy eating durian. -.-
wood apple juice is an extremely healthy drink.. very cooling and good for digestion. Also good to eliminate intestinal worms in kids. we just squeeze the pulp in warm water just as you would do to get tamarind pulp add more water and palm sugar or jaggery to balance the sourness .. some like to add a pinch of salt and pepper too to it. any which way its delicious..
It is available in every south Asian country (and I suppose in south east Asia too). The region I come from you find couple of varieties. The sweet ones is mainly used for making juice. The the fun thing is the sour one. But wait - didn't he eat the seeds part which has a harsh gum (jelly) around it which should not be eaten! Hope he did not get a horrible constipation.
Hey, I come from Vietnam and the wood apply also grow up here. And I am looking for a chance to sell wood apple. I wonder who are interesting to corporate with me? Pls feel free contact me if you are really interesting with wood apple.
Occasionally, but not often. I've seen at the bigger markets and I have seen it at the market on the border of Cambodia - Rong Kluea. I wish it was more common!
By the way, we have two kind of this fruit. One we call Bel, and the other one, Kodbel. Kodbel is the kind I explained in my previous posting - which I believe - you are eating. The other one, is sweet type all alone, with sticky glue stuffs inside. We make them shorbot (sweet drinks), adding little salt and Sugar and water. They are never sour.
Hello Mark! Thank you for the video. That's one of my favourite fruit since childhood, but it's very hard to find in markets nowadays especually when you live in Bangkok, Thailand. I almost have to get away from the city to randomly find one in local markets LOL. Glad to know it's pretty common in Sri Lanka (I assume so, correct me if I'm wrong)...
What an interesting fruit. It looks (and smells) a bit funky. I love your videos. I especially like the roosters crowing in the background...reminds me of home.
Woodapple also native to India.. when younger we used to eat the pulp mixed with kaffir Lime juice, sugar and kaffir Lime leaves.. tastes wonderful..! (kaffir Lime = gondhoraj lebu (in bengali)) #markwiens
Mark, u have no idea, that is my favorite fruit. I'm fr Bangladesh (origin) & I thought it grows only in our country. We eat them also when it is little green (when it is still white inside), and sour. We mix Salt and hot green chilly & very little sugar. If you like spicy or hot, you will love it. I am so glad it is found in Sri Lanka & for that reason I may visit SL 1day. Thanks for sharing but pls do not forget to try our way, at least once. My sister was so jealous when he saw u'r video.
who said it is native to your country, it's native to India, 😂 your country is so unrecognised that you are telling clear lies even about fruit origins to uplift your image

Wood Apple is very tasty fruit. Mostly ladies are like this fruit
It's kawista! In Indonesia we use it for rujak (fruit salad)
Cool, thank you for watching!
Thanks! Hope you can find one soon... it's a little strange at first, but I found it to be really quite delicious!
@rytis1 I'm actually not in Sri Lanka anymore... but thanks so much for the offer! You should give woodapple juice a try - it's sweetened up so it almost kind of tastes like raisins! Thanks again, and hope you're having a great time!

As sri Lankans, we slam it on the floor
It's no where sweet, so you'll have to add some sugar to negate the extra sourness.
+Saskia Groß good for you
We indians also do the same..
@@ayushigoel1271 yes it's heaven taste
can't wait to try this fruit.. Thanks Mark
I love your smile. So natural. You are a happy guy. God bless!
Yup, it really is. Have you ever seen a woodapple in Turkey?
Elephants are somehow known to finish(eat) the inside fleshy part of the wood apple without breaking the shell, some wonderful digestive system they have :) This is also called Elephant apple and it is a very divine fruit according to Indian culture.
So I've made it my mission to watch all Marks videos. And can confirm it was a decision well made.

Yep. That was unnecessary. Even McDonald burger looks like poop :)
Krishnakumar K A McDonald's burgers also taste like poop
Justin Pettit how do you know what poop taste like lmaooo

We can it Kavit in India, at least in Hyderabad.
Hey thanks for watching. I've never seen the tree either, I have no idea what it looks like. It's mostly popular in Sri Lanka and India.
@RABthefirst Good to hear about durian! With an extremely hard outer shell, the fruit is pretty tough, but I'm not sure about how fast it decays... Maybe fast though, because some Sri Lankan friends of mine in the UK have said that it's impossible to find there...
I honestly don't know, but maybe in the right place.

Yes Rerk, I've bought it a few times in Bangkok, I love ma-kwid!
Wood Apple is a favourite summer fruit in Bengal as well! Miss this! At home we pickle it and make into a juice concentrate to last for the year.
We call BELINGGAI in Malaysia. We mix the flesh with coconut milk, sugar (palm sugar better) and a little salt, and drink it . real good, but difficult now to find where I live (Kuala Lumpur)..

@cristinacreates Awesome to hear that, it's such a great fruit!
i like juice made using these fruits
I had this fruit when I was in Laos. We would just go to the woods and collect some and eat them on our way home.
Yah, I had the juice a few times in Sri Lanka and really enjoyed it too, but also just like the straight fruit!
Love his reaction when opened the fruit 3
The way you are smelling it and smiling makes me skeptical
Yes, next time!
A very under rated fruit. I have been eating this by adding the pulp to sugar and honey. Looks like coconut milk is another additive I must try!
Nice! Didn't expect so see Mark Weins old video would show when i tried to search wood apple.
actually it's called 'mah toom' in thai..it can be boiled and drink like 'tea'...very popular 'herbal drinking' in Thailand.

I've never seen this fruit before. LMAO at your reaction. It look like a stone on the outside.
Well, I've never heard of that fruit before. Somehow I find that most people find durian as the smelliest fruit ever. It's kind of weird because I'm a Malaysian and I truly enjoy eating durian. -.-
You can eat fresh mah toom? Where can you buy it? You should try to find some mah kweet, it's a little strange but so delicious!

Mark, next time you get a wood apple try making chutney out of it. In a blender: Wood apple pulp+jaggery+little bit salt = yummyness
By the way, we have two kind of this fruit. One we call Bel, and the other one, Kodbel. Kodbel is the kind I explained in my previous posting - which I believe - you are eating. Awesome to hear that Ravi, hope you enjoy the fruit. It's definitely unique, but I really enjoy it!
My Thai friend is from the south and he said he's had it in markets from down there. Maybe I can get him to ship some up. I want to try it !
I enjoy finding things that I've never tasted before!
Hey Terry, yes, so many things to discover!
Woodapple also native to India.. when younger we used to eat the pulp mixed with kaffir Lime juice, sugar and kaffir Lime leaves.. tastes wonderful..! (kaffir Lime = gondhoraj lebu (in bengali)) #markwiens
Also wood apple Popsicle is soo good...
Great to hear you like durian. Woodapple is not as strong or a flavor, just a strong smell!
@skynetarc Haha, thanks!
Wooow, that fruit is called Kinco in my region. Always love the smell, and heavenly good as a syrup.
One of your earliest vids i am guessing?
Tastes like raisins.... and blue cheese???? I gotta try that fruit!!!

Hey Sanjuna, thanks for sharing!
Yah, that's a great method too!

I couldn't help it, it really doesn't look too appetizing... but the taste is so good!
Mark, u have no idea, that is my favorite fruit. I'm fr Bangladesh (origin) & I thought it grows only in our country. Beautiful fruit, great content
there are two varieties of wood apple.yellow one(bael) is sweet. brown(kodhbael) is sour.the former is used for smoothies and latter for chutney.
