It's my favorite theme of Alice. It suits the character from that era so much. I don't see her as a child, unlike many people, but as someone who was clearly showing her feelings and emotions. In the window era, it's like she learned how to maintain some distance with people by sometimes saying cold things and all. But from the informations you can find in Zun's work(such as proposing tea an cakes for the three fairies) or helping people being lost in the magic forest, she kept that empathic side of her in the windows era while being more distant.(you can hear it in doll judgement, there is a mystery feel to the song, but also a sentimental part) So yes, I can imagine her being a part of the pc 98 era because the transition Zun made about Alice between 98 and windows is logical.
I think Alice has been really well worked/developed as a character. And no, I don't consider her as a tsundere at all, just someone who like people but also like to be alone from time to time, not wanting to be too close.
I love Alice, she's great, and based from my favorite childhood story "Alice in Wonderland". :)
Her ability to animate dolls even makes sense, because it's essential an incomplete version of Shinki's power to create life. Alice even says that her ultimate goal is to create a living, thinking doll, fully emulating Shinki's power.

An article of Aya about a conversation between Alice and Medicine would be interesting. Thing is, if Alice would meet Medicine and said ",I wish dolls could become alive and independant", that could change Medicine's goal,(Which is manipulate people by being social in order to liberate all dolls from humans/youkai) because that could change her point of view about some humans/youkai.
I kind of think Kuudere is a better description of her

This theme just represents one thing to me... Sadness. It's all fandom of course, but try to imagine it. Your realm gets attacked by invaders from another world, they attack your villages, your capital city... And the young "daughter" of the goddess of this world, a doll given more life than others, doesn't wanna watch, she leaves the palace to fight for her realm in the streets. But it is a losing battle, she cannot win. All around everything she knows burns to the ground. All she can do is watch. And after her defeat, once she awakens, the realm itself is on fire, it is collapsing. Her home is gone, forever.
As I said, all fandom... But such beautifully tragic fandom. Such a sad theme.
This theme really isn't that sad.
It's a lot more determined than sad.

Alice is still alive and kicking. She's quite a prominent character in Touhou.
And save her world? Makai still exists you know. And it doesn't look broken down or in ruins either. I mean if makai was destroyed I'm 100% sure Byakuren would die and touhou 12 and 13 would never happen.

Like I said, all fandom. Nothing official. The "old" Alice "died" back then, the new one replaced her in Touhou 7. And Makai appears like a pretty dead realm of chaos in Touhou 12. All you see is a building in the distance that might be the remnant of an old civilization. It is what I like about Touhou, you can make up your own stories here and there. The Fandom is quite intriguing that way.

Yes! In fact, ZUN created Nostalgic Blood of the East with this theme in mind, even commenting that it sounded nostalgic. The nostalgia was referring to this theme.
No wonder why i keep listening to nostalgic blood and thinking something nostalgic about that soundtrack
You can still call her Margatroid. The teen Alice and the adult Alice is the same person. Alice decides not to use the book of Grimoire after th05. That's why her book is always sealed in the following game. After th05, she left her mother Shinki and started having the hobby of BJD dolls. This the Alice we saw in the 07 and following games.
What's the meaning of BJD?

Alice Margatroid (アリス・マーガトロイド Arisu Māgatoroido) is a doll-controlling magician, she made her first ever appearance of the fifth PC-98 Touhou Project game Mystic Square as the third stage boss. She is a pure all-purpose-type magician without strengths and weaknesses in attributes, but she fundamentally fights in style of manipulating her self-made dolls. With a personality that is indifferent to other people, she is attached to magic, and is usually confident but is also timid in one aspect.
According to ZUN, Alice is kind of a special character in the series. (from TouhouWiki)

I think the third stage boss of a shmup is a significant turning point, so I put some extra spirit into the making of this song.

Definitely one of my favorite Stage 3 boss themes, if not my favorite. It's one of the most intense themes in the series, to the point where just listening to it almost feels exhausting to me.

0:41 sounds WEIRDLY similar to Nostalgic Blood of the East ~ Old World
This theme is one of the most underrated in the entire Touhou franchise. I adore it! My top favorite will always be Strawberry Crisis!!, but dang believe me Plastic Mind is definitely up there along with Magic Mirror and Border of Life. It's so mysterious and it just gives me such an intimidating vibe in a unique way apart from the loud intensity of Nuclear Fusion. It's more so a hopeless intimidation, completely at the hands of a higher being with no way to escape. It's elegant and organized, like everything is going accordingly. I sincerely believe this is Alice's best theme, and it certainly highlights her story and personality.

Also, is it just me, or does almost everything in LLS and MS make you think of Alice in Wonderland? Yuuka's sprite in Stage 5 of LLS looks like the rabbit from the Disney movie, and hell, the extra stage theme name in this game is Alice in Wonderland. Not to mention, Alice uses dolls. IT ALL MAKES SENSE.
Oh yeah, and this theme is so underrated it hurts me.
To add creepiness, Alice's MS colors are blue and white, almost EXACTLY like Alice in Wonderland's. Not to mention her blue eyes, and blonde hair.

Agreed, cute Alice pictures just don't work for some reason, it has to be creepy to be awesome you know.
It kinda works, but not in the same way; I think that the reeason for that is that Alice herself is a little unexplained, nad as we humans fear what we have no explenation for, it's natural that the represantations that resonate more with the character are the creepier ones.

This is my opinion on why does the creepy Alice works better than the cute one.
