The earliest footage of a Genesis live concert is probably the Atomic Sunrise Festival featuring Ant Philips and John Mayhew from March 1970, when they played Looking for Someone and The Knife. But still, this is a precious treasure. That's the only performance of Stagnation I've ever watched in Genesis career, and for that alone this video already deserves thousands of likes.
Holy crap!!! Stagnation! One of the most underrated Genesis songs. And a bit of "Happy the Man" at the beginning. Never thought I'd see video footage of either of those tunes. Thanks a million for this one.
Now that the curtain has closed on The Last Domino, these old clips even become more cherished. I became a fan of the band in 71' and musically those were heady days indeed. Steve to his credit is doing yeoman's work keeping the classic era alive but even those days grow short. Thanks for posting.
Wow! What a lovely job you did putting this together. Thanks for the great effort and for sharing it with us. Amazing to see them performing Stagnation which is a wonderful tune. It is amazing how good they were at such a young age.
by far the best version of this vid I've seen, thanks for posting it. Ahh....Stagnation, my favorite pre-Collins/pre-Hackett song. For some reason, as someone who spends a lot of time beside ponds fishing, this verse gives me the willies (in a very good way): And will I wait forever Beside the silent mirror And fish for bitter minnows Amongst the weeds and slimy water?
Love this!!! a moment in history recorded forever. When they just added about 2 years before with Phil Collins and Steve Hackett in 1970, to complete Genesis for the next 3 years... excellent footage!
I love these old views into the past. Having just seen Peter on his last tour, it just amazes me how far he, and frankly so many others from Genesis have come. Thanks for posting this (16 years ago).
Aww _LOVE_ this!! They're just babies man. The songs are absolutely beautiful too. Pure prog! Mica come adesso". Adesso cosa resta dopo l'apocalisse musicale?

This is "Sacred Tablets" Footage! - and so cool to hear a post-Ant Philips GENESIS playing material from "Trespass"! In those days, the band was received like Royalty in Italy! The one constant I noticed from this early document...Tony Banks has Always been a Sour PRIG!
This actually isn't the first live footage of them ever recorded - there is footage of them performing with their first guitarist, Anthony Phillips, and one of their drummers before Phil (I don't know which one) on TH-cam (Atomic Sunrise Festival, I think?). But, this footage is much, much better. I love when Phil laughs at Mike after he talks - he was the stress-reliever in the group, and that's a prime example that isn't often seen. Thanks for putting this together. :)
The drummer was John Mayhew, who recorded Trespass with them. According to Ant Phillips, he was fired from the band due to divergent personalities. He didn't "fit" in Genesis, like Pete Best didn't in the Beatles.
Wow thank you so much I'm still a fan even after their solo careers an amazing bunch of musical souls who are all great composers and fed ideas off each other it's more than just progressive rock it's Music
This is a treasure. Watching Phil behind a rather small kit shows how natural of a time keeper he is. His hands should be outlawed on the street for the deadly weapons that they are. He's a true percussionist in the sense of the word. Calling him a drummer is like shortchanging him.

I have the 'I Know What I Like' book by Armando Gallo, and it doesn't say when the change occurred, but judging on photos and this clip, the new look and haircut seemed to occur in Apr 72 when on tour in Italy, if not, on a date close by. Being a Genesis geek, Pete's look was not shown to a large UK crowd 'til the Lincoln Fest on 28th May '72. There doesn't seem to be an actual live concert clip of Genesis before the posted, though I wish there was! The earlier Pop Shop on TV is live tho (Jan '72)
