I remember watching Genesis perform the “Lamb” on the Liverpool Empire in 74/75, I was lucky to see them as the original tour was cancelled due to Steve Hacket severing a tendon in his hand, by the time the tour had been rescheduled I had bought and got to know the album and managed to get a ticket. I was a bit disappointed that the only other song they did was the Musical Box though and didn’t know at the time that they would never tour again with Peter Gabriel.
This is an amazing document of what for many was an unknown period in Peter’s career. I’m delighted to see him in a state of manic joy, bringing his thrilling composition to an audience, post-Genesis.
Saw this tour in the uk. For a quiet shy guy pg can really throw some energy out there. Great to have a visual record of him at this crucial stage in his career. A true polymath !
@@johndelp1810 amen to that. Can’t decide whether it’s just that I’m approaching 70 now and all the good music in the world has already been made ( by Peter and many like him) or that I’m just an old grump moaning about “modern music!” …….. but where are todays Peter Gabriel’s and Joni Mitchell’s and bob Dylan’s and Pete townsends and van Morrisons and David bowies ?? Yes I can’t help thinking we were so lucky to grow up when we did and and did it to the music we had then
Never saw this tour, but I was fortunate enough to catch the next one in 1978 when he toured his second album. He started with the brilliant On The Air, which I've always thought is a kind of son of Back In NYC. Lots of punk energy. He and all of the band had shaven heads, and he was quite intimidating when he burst onto the stage, spitting out the words. To this day, it's one of my favourite concerts.
For an obsessive Peter Gabriel fan like me, such videos are priceless. I didn't have a chance to see Gabriel live in those years for two reasons. In 1977 I was 13, and even if that wasn't a problem, the Iron Curtain was a problem. There was no chance of crossing it for normal, insignificant people like me. What can I say? Well - I am very impressed with what you do, I am your fan and thank you for bringing me closer to my musical idol. THANKS! Grzegorz Grabowski
I think this was towards the end of the night so he's going all out....he only had his first album to play so had to add extras.....he also played " heard it through the grapevine"...... nona hendrix and steve gibbons supported on this tour....saw it at Newcastle Uk.........
3 years later in 1980 I saw him for the first time in Barcelona and it was something unforgettable. That time along with his splendid stage with Genesis was great. I have to admit that over time I stopped being interested in his music but those times are in my musical DNA. thanks for uploading this gem G Music greetings 🍻
I remember an uncertain account in Paris in 1977 Gabriel, had an album under his name, so he started the concert with an extract from each title. then the whole album. for the encore back in New York city. madness..
I love that people are willing to send you their film clips and you can then do your magic for the benefit of us all! Loved how one can clearly detect Peter's facial expressions and body movements. Thank you again and again for these much improved visual and aural trips to the past!
Saw melted face tour , started with intruder and no one new he was sitting about 3rd row in the audience! Then he pops up from his seat ,I know ,how to creep quietly..... awsome
I think this is the only live song from Genesis era he ever played in his first 2 solo tours then he choose not to play anything more from Genesis maybe Carpet Crawlers one time in some tours after that (good to see Tony Levin with some hair and no 🕳)
I love this song and his vocals are amazing on the album and the Genesis bootlegs of the tour that followed but man, this is rough lol. I still love raw live stuff though. But yeah this is a mess. Even the soundboard studio practice session of this song from the 1982 reunion six of the best is better 😂
Robert Fripp - Guitars Steve Hunter - Guitars Larry Fast - Synthesisers Alan Schwartzberg - Drums, Backing Vocals Phil Aaberg - Keyboards, Backing Vocals Jim Maelen - Percussion, Backing Vocals
You don’t see Fripp because he sat offstage and played on a few songs. At least that’s my recollection from the concert I saw at Winterland in San Francisco from that tour.
@@GenesisMuseum Thanks, I saw a version of this band in Boston in ‘78 at a pretty small venue w/ Fast/Levin/Hunter/Marotta and later found out ‘Dusty’ was behind the curtain (?) anyway it was unforgettable for a 19 year old Genesis/Gabriel fan who was becoming a serious Prog enthusiast!
His Rael character was punk in 1974 before punk was even a thing (its origins date back to 1976). Back in NYC, a hard-prog song, is an uncredited foundation of punk. Punk rebelled against prog and it would take serious therapy to face the fact that prog is its parent.
I disagree, i think he did a great job, and hellyeah, to me it it is punk, totally. I understand and respect, that it's odd to someone who's really into the punk genre of that decade. But when i heard Back in N.Y.C. for the first time i was blown away by Peter Gabriels voice and the way he's spitting out the words. I like it, totally okay if you don't... but i take it as a side effect of peter gabriel dealing woth the problems during recording the lamb lies down on broadway and i'm just blown away by his rage and anger while "being" this Charakter RAEL. i love it, but i know and really respect that i'm not into punk of that era...
If I understood correctly, Phil was frustrated because Peter had those crazy consumes like the Slipperman, where he couldn't get the microphone near his mouth. By that time the theatrics heavily interfered with the music. Phil, if I'm correct, never criticized Peter's singing itself.

Wow - Tony Levin without a shaved head or moustache. 😮
🤷🏻🤔
😂
haha! first thing I noticed too
I think Tony Levin's hair has now been put into the public domain: th-cam.com/video/6_FwtR184BE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MhdDI9afwxH6whkm
During this tour ( or 1 or 2 years later) several band members shaved their head, Tony stuck with it…

Absolutely. I saw him on this tour in Sheffield
Peter had so much energy for this tour. Had the pleasure of seeing him in a small venue in Philadelphia What a great time to be young

Thank You So Much!

Well, quite a few have been willing to have us restore their material this way, quite a few have not. All we can do is try 🤷
Awesomely rare and raw...Thanks!
Wow, just wow! That energy 🤯 thank you once again for sharing something that great with us.
That was great. The raw energy of early solo pg. Thank you
AMAZING Footage!!! Loved the Leather Jacket!

Thank you so much ! What a treat
Thank You very much!
HO WHOA! Oh so pinned over the old days. Studyin Cueball (apparently before he found Rael's electric rayzee) especially fleaks me rough.
My favorite PG solo tour ! Thank you for this !!
Wow! Impressive!
Excellent work yet again. Thank you!
WoooooooooW! Thanks for sharing this gem ❤
perfection
that was a gift, thank you !
The song was as Punk as anything that was around at that time.
Let's not get carried away. much more heavy metal than assholes like the sex pistols and the clash!
Brilliant 🤩
HARD CORE !!
I saw that❤❤❤77

Yes, Lamb. I was at the 78' Show in Chicago.
Große Klasse. Danke fürs Teilen 👍
Peters magical engagement in the songs makes him unique together with his voice

It's a bit shaky but any video of Gabriel back then is great

Gabriel: See guys, I can be punk too.
The Damned: No, not really, you can't.

@@toostrongtofail6669I can agree with that, I was kind of joking. But Gabriel overall lacks the spirit of punk. Even or especially politically.
I hope this was the last song of the evening, because Peter's voice is fried!
🤔
Yes, It was the final Song of the concerts of his first solo tour
And what is Rael spelled backwards? All very Shakespearean.
Wow, early-ish wireless mic there?
Yes, he talks about it here: th-cam.com/video/Fbtkp0SP4qc/w-d-xo.html

Who is that playing guitar?
Steve Hunter
Sorry but he's hardly singing, more yelling. Phil's frustration about his vocals on The Lamb tour are correct
I'll take raw, live, and imperfect over studio overdubs any day 🤷
This song required this….listen to the entire 2 record album and you’ll understand the context.
Yeah, pretty tough to listen to.
I like it. Has the emotion needed. It's an angry song.
