- I've had this idea for a while so here it is; a video pitting arguably the two most powerful rangers in PR history against each other. Tommy Oliver vs Jason Lee Scott. Which of them is the best fighter? You decide!

Kinda what I thought for years: Tommy's style is more speed and flash, Jason's is more power and substance (more straight-to-the-point).

Here's how it goes, Jason is the better leader. If you go back and watch the episode when tommy becomes leader you will clearly see how jason did all of the work while tommy was still learning how to become the leader. And when jason returned as the gold ranger in zeo it showed how much respect he had for the team because he could have taken leadership from tommy like tommy did to Jason in mmpr but decided that tommy should remain leader because he didn't want to take that away from his friend. And in a fight they are equals. There's an episode where they fight in a martial arts competition and they end it in a draw.

Back when we were kids, Tommy was EVERYONE'S favorite, but it seems like anyone who comes back twenty years later favors Jason (including me). I think JDF won all us kids over with his sheer athleticism. No one made those high kicks look as good, and he was SO into it. I don't think you could argue that anyone loved being a ranger more than JDF. Austin St. John was a more subdued person, and Jason was a more subdued character as a result. His moves weren't as flashy, or as snappy, but he did look like he was actually fighting. Jason passing the mantle to Tommy, the "new kid", was an act of pure humility. He didn't even need a "getting over it" episode. Just knew what the team needed and rolled with it. Tommy was cool as hell (and my childhood Halloween costume), but Jason will always be the leader to me.

Looks aren't everything, and the actor who played Tommy: Jason David Frank is in the Guinness Book of world records for neutralizing the most targets while Sky Diving. Seen the video of it online. He was good. :)
They've both had displayed great feats of strength throughout the show. But when it comes to unmorphed fighting, I think Jason may be the better fighter or at least the stronger fighter. He fought Goldar in the dark dimension without his powers and got some good hits in. And while I realize Tommy also fought Goldar unmorphed in a hay field somewhere and got the upper hand, Tommy didn't have the handicap of being in a power charged death match ring like Jason was with Goldar. Added to which, Jason would later meet Goldar again in the dark dimension while morphed and he actually got the upper hand while trying to save the power candles. And then he also went toe-to-toe with the evil Green Ranger while unmorphed for a few back and forth hits and kicks. And Tommy never faced off against Jason unmorphed while Jason was morphed. As the Gold Ranger, Jason looked like he even got quicker with his kicks and looked like he bulked up more when he returned from his hiatus. I'd definitely go as far as saying during the Zeo seasons, Jason was the more dominate ranger in terms of strength and combat. He actually looked like the strong guy of the team. Tommy may have a lot more seasons under his belt, but I think Jason edges out Tommy in the end. Both have defeated monsters on their own as well. So they're evenly matched in a lot of ways. And remember, in the end it was Jason who beat Tommy in Green With Evil during their last fight before Tommy became a good guy. I'll admit Tommy was beating up on the whole team for most of that story-arc, but Jason did eventually end up beating Tommy one-to-one while morphed.

The Power Ranger francise keeps on growing but there will be nobody bigger than Tommy and Jason...they should do a movie called Tommy and Jason...I would to see them fight each other and also work together...it started with these two and it should finish with these two.
Jason is still the best ranger as he was the only ranger who can defeat and who defeated tommy..Jason is the true leader.I can say Austin was still successful after MMPR and is still a hero being a paramedic and a firefighter.

Sorry even though Jason was the original leader I like both of them but I prefer Tommy and in my opinion Tommy stronger than Jason just because he can lift weights and do karate mean that they are better power ranger leader Tommy was weaker because Rita had him under spell so even once green powers was destroyed and became white ranger Tommy did fantastic job and in the 25th anniversary MMPR green ranger and white ranger is back 2018

You have to consider that they had to blend Japanese and American footage so Jason was more limited than Tommy (As the story required more Jason David Frank than actual Green Ranger). Also, Tommy's martial art was based more on acrobatics and flash than actual moves that would defend you against opponents. So the skills aren't unequal but rather different. Like a basic Ken and Ryu. Tommy is more like Ken who is flashy and stylish where as Ryu is more powerful and straight forward. Both are just as dangerous but people are going to be drawn to the flare of Ken with his multiple spin kicks and trickery and 14 hit combos where as Ryu will just hit you with a two piece combo with a shoruiken at the end and do just as much (if not more) damage than Ken.
Tommy Oliver VS. Jason Lee Scott? According to the television show, Jason displayed more power as he evenly matched Tommy unmorphed and when they were morphed (Japanese footage of course), the Red Ranger defeated the Green Ranger one-on-one. In fact, it is implied heavily that Jason was trying his best not to fight him the entire time until he beat all the rangers and put the world in jeopardy. So statistics say Jason. ... ... ...I say Jason as well. :-)

It is literally shown that Jason is far stronger then tommy in raw power. Jason’s fighting style only gets flashy when he spars with Zack, normally he is by far the more straight forward one and can put down putties with single hits.
He has never defeated Tommy, he just broke up the spell.

Jason is the only ranger to be Goldon without being morphed and the only one to beat boss in that matter. Jason was voted the best power ranger leader on abc and also he beat tommy 1v1 in a morphed battle. I think he even beat him in a karate match.

it's kind of hard to top Jason(red ranger) when he defeated three putties with one kick.
This show kicked so much ass! Back then Jason's moves always felt clumsy compared to Tommy's. My more matured eye tell that his moves are executed very well and efficient, whereas Tommy is very flashy with his high spin kicks, many of which would probably miss in a real fight, making him waste more energy. Still nice to look at, though.
Agree with you man. Its true when Tommy was made leader, you could tell he struggled, Jason would still lead. The same went on ZEO. They always pulled some cheesy stuff everytime Kimberly or other rangers would scream Tommy's name, where Jason didn't need to be called He took it upon himself to help the others. Remember that fight scene Jason vs. Goldar, Jason with no power took him on. Jason is the real Leader of the Power Rangers

You showed tommy as the green AND white ranger but only showed Jason as the red ranger but he was also the gold ranger in Zeo which he was freaking awesome in. Jason showed remarkable leadership there and showed a great deal of strength and skills.

Austin St. John is the best. He left the show to save lives as a medic and served his country. JDF went on the make more power ranger appearances and fight in MMA. Who is the real hero and undisputed hero? Even when Jason became the gold ranger, tommy started getting less camera time and disappeared for a couple of episodes and Jason took charge to find his amnesia ass lol

IMO. Jason will always be the best Ranger, Red Ranger, Leader. It's honestly to bad that he doesn't get the same level of praise that Tommy does 😤😡😢 lol. In all of the praising of Tommy, I feel like people keep forgetting that Tommy may have won battles against Jason, but Jason won the war between them. And honestly, may god have mercy the Ranger team would have to deal with Jason and Tommy, if they ever turned evil at the same time. Lol. But if these two were to ever have a rematch (regardless of color, or side the they're on) the other Rangers would just have to get out of their way and let them fight. Haha. Or call on the entire Ranger roster from the previous seasons to help break up the fight. or even need their own planet to fight on 😂😅

Jason got cheated in the episode where tommy and Jason fought in the dojo, cuz he hit tommy three times before the time ran out and only got one point. They tied that one by the way
And the second time the power rangers were cloned they cloned all the ranger, including the green one, except Jason, because they couldnt find anyone as powerful and skilled in combat as he, so they used a monster instead of cloning the red ranger. Tommy was a great leader, Jason was just better.

WOW!!!!! That brought back some of my best memories. I've seen every last one those fight scenes when they actually aired. Watching those guys inspired me to want to do basic gymnastics ( backhand springs and tucks). I was so inspired I taught myself. Those were the days. Definitely on my favorites list. Thanks :-)

As far as a leader goes, Jason hands down. Season 2 Episode 14: Missing Green. That episode alone explains why Jason is the one true leader of the Rangers. It's a shame only four episodes later, he's stripped of his role. Understandably though, he was leaving the show. As were Zack and Trini. Billy was no leader, he was the tech. Kimberly pretty much was little more than Tommy's cheerleader once he made his debut. No way in the world the new rangers would be well received if they took the mantle. Tommy literally was the only choice. I personally even hold Andros in a higher regard than Tommy as a leader. Tommy is the personification of the sixth ranger. A lone wolf who gets the team out a pickle when all hope seems lost. Powerful in his own regard, but detached. He's like a Vegeta. He's a great character and definitely the best solo Ranger. But it's all about the team. I only wish they would have given the older rangers a better send off and had Jason actually pass the torch to Tommy. Gotta give JDF his props for sticking with the show so long. Finally, it would have been a pleasure to see the original cast do the first movie, but wishful thinking. Anyway great series.
Not to mention, Tommy lost all motivation when he was losing his powers. They had to hold his hand throughout that entire storyline.
Jason was my favorite Red Ranger out of them all but over all I will have to say that Tommy was the superior martial artist.

Jason was Ryu and Tommy was Ken. Ryu was Power and Ken was Speed. Same applies to Jason and Tommy.
About 2 decades later, and the debate still rages.
Zack had swag. He was my second favorite ranger next to Jason and Tommy. He was, of course, the first second in command. And yes, I loved Hip Hop Kido. Zack danced on those putties like a boss. The putty fights started to get cheesy when Jason, Trini, and Zack left.

I actually agree. In my opinion, Jason is the more disciplined fighter while Tommy is more ferocious. Yet, Tommy does have his controlled side, just overall he is a beast of a fighter. Jason fights to defend himself rather than sheer domination of his opponent. Just my opinion.

The only reason why Tommy became leader was because Austin St, John was leaving, and the fans wanted Jason Frank to come back because of his popularity. Brad Hawkins, who played Ryan Steele on VR Troopers, was supposed to replace Jason Frank as the White Ranger.
Aww man, I love them both but I came to this video all about Jason! He was my favorite, still is but watching this now TOMMY KICKED A!! He was a better fighter it appears. Jason was the only one to beat a leader boss (goldar) without his powers. Jason was the only one to beat tommy one on one in a fight. Jas was voted by ABC in 2004 as the #1 red ranger of all time, A subsequent contest on Toon Disney in 2007 also voted him as the most popular Red Ranger. As stated at the first Power Morphicon, Jason still holds this title.

I love this video!It brings back soooo many good childhood memories! Jason David Frank happens to own his own gym/dojo here in Houston and he has all of his Power Ranger memorabilia stuff on the walls which is SOOOOOO AWESOME!! He's like super swole now and a UFC fighter. I saw him one time at his gym and almost had a meltdown because I was like so starstruck lol!

They were both great leaders, but when it came to leadership; Jason wins because he had balls, and would take bosses head on without help. Not only that, Jason was more bolder than Tommy. When Tommy became the White Ranger and Red Ranger, he relied heavily on Jason when it came to making decisions.
Jason and Tommy would of made an awesome Billy and Jimmy Lee for Double Dragon movie.

Walter Jones, in real life, has three black belts: one in karate, one in taeqwondo, and another in Capeoira. I loved Zack. Hip hop Hido. As for Billy, you're right. He did become a better fighter after a year.

Power Rangers was never going to be cancelled, but PRiS was planned as the intended ending. Ratings were declining since MMPR Series 3. By the time the characters were replaced in PRT, the ratings increased for the first time since MMPR Series 2. PRiS was already planned, and was to be made regardless if PRT still had declining ratings. Before they even got to the final arc of PRiS, PRLG was planned.

Actually if you look at ALL their work, Jason/Austin/Jason (lol) is more solid and simplistic. Very efficient. Tommy is more flashy and energetic! More fierce. Jason seems more masterful.

Jason because he was more realistic in his fighting style. Tommy was obviously used for showing off. If they wanted to (The show producers) they would have had Jason take out 5-10 putties by himself too.
When Jason hits his attacker, they don't get back up. He is a grapple fighter too, Tommy is bout speed. Jason is a better leader. Tommy is the lone fighter of the group, but bad at leadership. One thing you guys need to remember about Tommy though, the only Ranger to have EVER beaten him in a fight, was Jason. That's a fact. That being said this 20 yr old contest is like picking between Ryu and Ken from SF2. Both are the greatest Rangers. I pick Jason, once morphed he is to be feared.
Damn, Haim Saban was cheap. He only paid them $600.00 a week to do this show. That $2400.00 a month times 12. You do the math, and it equals up to $28,800.00 a year. No wonder Walter Jones, Austin St. John, and Thuy Trang left.
